The Best Laptop Of 2021
The late-2020 MacBook Air, powered by Apples M1 processor, is the best laptop you can buy. The base model, which includes 8GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, starts at $999.
Appearance-wise, this laptop has a lot in common with the Intel-powered MacBook Air that Apple released earlier this year, including the same 2560 x 1600 screen, Touch ID, 720p webcam, fingerprint sensor, and scissor-switch keyboard.
But the new processor is the star of the show here its fast. In our testing, it handled intense photo- and video-editing workloads better than almost any Intel-powered laptop weve tried this year. It was also able to run Shadow of the Tomb Raider at close-to-playable frame rates, which is quite a feat for integrated graphics. At launch, these apps hadnt yet been optimized for the M1 processor and were running through Apples Rosetta 2 translation layer but they still worked fine.
And the processing power didnt even weigh down the battery life: we got between eight and 10 hours of sustained work.
Another benefit of the M1 processor is that it enables the MacBook Air to run iPhone and iPad apps natively on macOS. As of this writing, there still isnt a huge selection of mobile apps available, and some that have been released arent quite optimized for the laptop screen. Still, its a benefit we can look forward to as time goes on.
The MacBook Pro is an excellent laptop for video editing and intensive work.
Clock Speed: The Cpu Stopwatch
Measured in megahertz or more often gigahertz , a processor’s clock speed is its operating frequencya driver of how many instructions the processor can crunch through per second. Higher clock speed is generally better, though things get muddy when comparing clock speeds between different brands or even between chips within the same brand. That’s because some CPUs are more efficient than others, able to process just as many instructions in a given slice of time despite operating at a lower clock speed. Still, clock speed can be telling when comparing chips within a single vendor’s family line.
To complicate things further, today’s processors typically have two advertised clock speeds: a base clock and boost clock, sometimes dubbed turbo speed since Intel refers to the duality as Turbo Boost technology. When handling light workloads, the CPU runs at its base clock, typically between 1GHz and 2GHz for laptop chips though sometimes higher depending on the processor’s rated wattage. When more speed is needed, the CPU temporarily acceleratesoften to 3.5GHz to 5GHz or sountil the task is done. Processors don’t run at their boost clock all the time because they might overheat.

Laptop Battery Life: Manufacturer Claims Vs Reality
In a nutshell:
- Manufacturer battery claims arent useful unless youre only comparing models from the same brand. Use our reviews to get the full picture.
Manufacturers often make heady claims about how long their laptops’ batteries last. Our tests ignore the manufacturer claims and involve multiple battery rundowns while simulating web browsing and watching videos.
If you’re buying a laptop that you intend to use when out and about, make sure the battery life is at least six hours based on our reviews. We’ve tested some models that last for more than 15 hours before they need recharging.
Battery stamina on large, desktop-replacement models won’t be as crucial, as they’ll almost always be near a power socket. But we still mark them down if they run out of juice in under four hours.
We have previously found that laptop battery life claims versus reality are seldom remotely comparable, so you should always take these claims with a pinch of salt and use our reviews as a place to assess how different laptops’ batteries compare to one another.
Our in-depth battery tests give you the real picture when it comes to battery life on a laptop. Make sure you check our laptop reviewsto find a great model that will last.

In the changing world of laptops, knowing what to buy can be a complex process.
Everyone wants the best performance, but what about price? How big a screen can you get before you sacrifice portability? How many ports do you need, and what size hard drive will do the job? Do you want a hybrid? Do you need a touchscreen for Windows 8, or can you go without?
Your best weapon before you go shopping is to be informed. To help, we’ve created this guide with a few pointers on what you’ll need to consider before buying a laptop.
Atom: Good Battery Life Weak Performance
Good For: Saving Money, Long Battery Life, Light WeightBad For: Multitasking, Serious Productivity
Intel’s cheapest processor line and largely on the way out, Atom appears in super-cheap Windows laptops or tablets. Almost all Atom CPUs have four cores and are extremely low power, allowing them to have excellent battery life, but the lowest level of performance. We recommend that you buy an Atom-powered laptop only as a secondary device for an adult or a primary for children. Atom is good enough for surfing the web and watching videos but struggles with content creation and productivity tasks. Most current-generation cheap laptops now use Celeron chips rather than Atom so you’ll probably find Atom only on older systems.

Display: 1080p Or Bust
Every budget laptop has an edge-lit LCD screen. It wont look as nice as the screens on an iPhone or most Android phones, but budget laptop displays look fine. Theres one specification to be wary of, however, and thats the resolution.
Most laptops have a 1080p display . However, some budget laptops shave costs with a display resolution of 1366 x 768. If theyre tricky, theyll advertise this as an HD resolution without specifying the pixel count.

The Best Laptop In 2021 For Big
Even if youve used a light laptop before, its difficult to explain how light the LG Gram 17 is. It has a massive 17-inch display, but its somehow only three pounds. Picking it up messes with your mind you feel like youre not holding anything.
But the Gram 17s weight isnt the only standout feature. It also has some of the best battery life you can get, lasting over 12 hours in our testing. Add a great keyboard, a solid port selection, quiet fans, and a fast processor, and theres very little not to like about this device.
Not everyone needs a 17-inch display, and many folks who do are looking for a heavier-duty workstation that probably doesnt get moved very often. But if youd just really like a large screen for your daily office work and Netflixing, youre the target demographic for this machine. Its a niche, but truly impressive device without much real competition in todays market.
A Great Choice For Mac Power Users
If youre a creative professional who doesnt quite want to pay the price of the MacBook Pro 16, or youre looking for something more compact, youre probably better suited to the 14-inch MacBook Pro. This device is thinner, lighter, and less expensive than its 16-inch counterpart, but it comes with the same monstrous processor options and the same stellar screen, albeit at a smaller size.
We didnt see much of a difference in benchmark scores between the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBooks with the same processors the 14-incher actually outperformed the 16-inchers in some of our tests. The primary difference to consider, apart from the sizes of these devices, is battery life. The 16-inch chassis allows for a significantly bigger battery, and the 16-inch M1 Pro model lasted several hours longer than the 14-inch M1 Pro model did in our testing.
On the outside, Apple has fixed many of the issues that reviewers had with previous MacBook Pro models. There are ports galore on this device, including an HDMI, an SD slot, and multiple Thunderbolt 4 ports. The much-maligned Touchbar is also no more. While you can get plenty of great 14-inch laptops for half the price of this MacBook, its the one to buy if money is no object.

The Best Windows Laptop
Its hard to come up with a single complaint about the Spectre x360 14. Its a drop-dead gorgeous machine with a sturdy build and a premium look and feel.
But the Spectre x360 14 isnt just pretty to look at: its also a pleasure to use as a daily work driver. Intels latest 11th Gen processors and Iris Xe integrated graphics deliver snappy performance with no slowdown or freezes that we observed. And we got an average of 10 hours of battery life out of the device one of the best results weve ever seen.
On the outside, the Spectre includes a roomy 3:2 display, and if FHD resolution doesnt suit your fancy, there are OLED and 1,000-nit options available. Theres even a packaged stylus, which attaches magnetically to the side of the Spectre handy if youre using the device as a tablet. Pretty much every other aspect of this laptop, from its comfortable keyboard and smooth touchpad to its bass-heavy audio and practical port selection, rivals or exceeds the best convertibles on the market.
Such an exceptional package of features doesnt come cheap, and many customers will find everything they need in a less expensive product. But the Spectre x360 14 is the new gold standard of Windows convertibles. Overall, its the best Windows laptop you can buy.
What’s An Ideal Size And Weight

Most people searching for a general-purpose laptop should choose one that measures about half an inch thick and weighs 3 pounds or less. In general, these are the maximum dimensions and heft a laptop can have for us to consider it an ultraportable, and for most users, portability is the key to maximizing use and enjoyment.
Aiming for that weight and thickness, in most cases, will limit the laptops screen size to 13 or 14 inches, although a few models with 15-inch or larger screens now fit into the ultraportable category. At most of these screen sizes, you can find models in either the conventional clamshell laptop shape or a 2-in-1 convertible design. The latter has a hinge that rotates the screen 360 degrees so you can use it as a makeshift tablet or prop it up like a tent for watching movies.
Some Windows and Chrome OS laptops do have smaller displays, such as 10 or 11 inches. Some of these are not technically laptops in the pure sense, but rather tablets with detachable keyboards. Unless youre specifically looking for a part-time tablet or the lightest possible laptop, avoid these designs. Theyre lighter than most 13-inch ultraportables, often less than 2 pounds, but theyre not as good at being tablets as the Apple iPad is, and their detachable keyboards mean theyre not much good at being laptops, eithertyping on most of them tends to be subpar.

How To Find The Best Laptop To Buy
Operating system : To gauge what operating system is right for you, consider which applications and software you’ll need as well as what OS your existing devices are on:
- Apple’s iOS is great for those invested in the Apple ecosystem
- Windows is useful for professionals who frequently need the Microsoft Office suite
- Chromebooks can be a smart choice if youre predominantly doing web-based tasks . They generally can’t run advanced apps, but they tend to be affordable.
Speed: This refers to processor speed. Intel and AMD are the two most common brands for CPUs . We recommend at least two core processors for your machine to run efficiently and quickly four or more is even better if you can afford it. As a handy guide: The speedier and more powerful processors have higher numbers and are generally more expensive. For example, the Intel Core i3 is the least powerful in the lineup, followed by Core i5 and Core i7 and then the more robust Core i9. A Core i3 will likely only be found in budget-minded devices for kids or families a Core i5 or i7 will be adequate for most users.
Storage space: Aim for a minimum of 64 GB SSD. SSD is the acronym for solid state drive. They’re also smaller, which helps with weight, and faster, so you can access your data more quickly.
Connectivity: Make sure the computer can connect over WiFi and has at least one USB-C port and a 3.5 mm jack for headphones.

At just over four pounds, the Zephyrus G15 is one of the lightest 15-inch gaming laptops you can buy. But youre not compromising performance for that portability. The G15 is powered by the top mobile chips AMD and Nvidia have to offer, and pairs thim with a fast 165Hz QHD display. In our testing, the system was able to handle even the toughest AAA titles at QHD resolution.
Almost everything else about the G15 is great too: the audio sounds good, the keyboard and touchpad are some of the best on the market, the port selection has just about everything youd need, and the battery can last over eight and a half hours to a charge. If youre looking for a high-powered gaming machine that also works great as a daily driver, the Zephyrus G15 should be at the top of your list.

Then there’s the issue of thread count. We’re not talking about linens and sheets here, but processing threads. A thread is essentially a task, or a portion of a task, for the computer to perform. Computers routinely juggle hundreds or thousands of them, though a processor can work on only so many threads simultaneously. That number equals its thread count, which is often double its core count.
A schematic of an eight-core Intel CPU
In olden days, CPU cores could process only one thread at a time, but today’s processors frequently have thread-doubling technology that allows one core to work on two threads simultaneously. An eight-core chip with this technology, for example, can handle 16 threads at a time. Intel calls this Hyper-Threading the generic term is simultaneous multithreading .
At the minimum, look for a processor that can process four threads. Users working on heavy media creation and conversion tasks will want the ability to handle eight or more. Core count trumps thread count all else being equal, an eight-core CPU without multithreading will generally outperform a quad-core processor with it. Of course, in the world of processors, all else is seldom equal that’s why so many varieties of chips exist. The next item, clock speed, is another key differentiator.
