Always Keep Windows Updated

How to make your old pc/laptop run faster to play hd games

There is an abundance of updates in the Windows ecosystem that are regularly pushed to the users, sometimes forcefully. But regularly updating your computer can improve Windows 10s performance in addition to protecting the machine from unwanted threats and newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Starting with Windows 8, Microsoft provides universal drivers for a vast collection of third-party hardware. Updates for such devices are delivered through Windows Update. But in the case of unsupported third-party apps and hardware, you might have to update them manually.

If youre running recent versions of Windows 10, updates install way faster than before. Thats because Microsoft has optimized the Windows Update process in such a way that most of the installation happens in the background while the user is busy with their work.

Use The Performance Troubleshooter

If you want to learn how to make an old laptop run faster, the first thing you can do is use the performance troubleshooter. Its built-in software that can automatically find and fix problems on your laptop. It can show you what issues are slowing down its performance and gives you a solution to it.

This software is only available for Windows operating systems. You can open it up by clicking on your Start button and then opening your Control Panel. Afterward, go to the search bar and look for Troubleshooting.

This will open up the setting for troubleshooting and is where you can find System and Security. Go ahead and select that and under it, click on Check for performance issues. This is a quick and easy fix for helping your laptop get rid of problems that can get solved right away.

Clean Out Your Hard Disk

If youve got a bloated hard disk filled with files you dont need, you could be slowing down your PC. Cleaning it out can give you a speed boost. Windows 10 has a surprisingly useful built-in tool for doing this called Storage Sense. Go to Settings > System > Storage and at the top of the screen, move the toggle from Off to On. When you do this, Windows constantly monitors your PC and deletes old junk files you no longer need temporary files, files in the Downloads folder that havent been changed in a month, and old Recycle Bin files.

You can customize how Storage Sense works and also use it to free up even more space than it normally would. Underneath Storage Sense, click Configure Storage Sense or run it now. From the screen that appears, you can change how often Storage Sense deletes files .

You can also tell Storage Sense to delete files in your Download folder, depending on how long theyve been there, and set how long to wait to delete files in the Recycle Bin automatically. You can also have Storage Sense move files from your PC to the cloud in Microsofts OneDrive cloud storage if theyre not opened for a certain amount of time .

Heres how to customize the way Storage Sense works, and to tell it to delete old versions of Windows.

Free Up Hard Drive Space

Freeing up space on your hard drive is an easy way to improve your computers performance. Over-cluttered hard drives slow computers down and are a burden that you should unload.

Start with going over the largest programs and data that takes up the most space individually. Then work your way down to smaller files.

Youd be surprised how much space is taken up by things youd never use again.

Our Top Tips For Making A Slow Laptop Or Pc Run Faster

how to make your old computer run faster 2016

As exciting as buying a new laptop or PC is, that blazing-fast speed you get out of the box is unlikely to last. As the internal storage gets filled up and background processes start running, some slowdown is almost inevitable.

This is usually more of an issue on Windows devices, with non-Surface hardware unable to benefit from the continuity between hardware and software you get from Apple.

Fortunately, there are some steps everyone can take to boost or restore performance. These are all completely safe to try and many won’t cost you a penny.

Unfortunately, they only really apply if your device uses a solid-state drive . Older mechanical hard drives are more limited, so we’d recommend upgrading to an SSD to see the biggest performance increase. There are some great SSDs currently available, many of which are relatively inexpensive. Learn more in our separate guide to installing an SSD in your PC.

It’s worth reiterating that this article is about Windows running slowly on your device. A slow internet connection is a separate issue altogether, and something that’s become much more important since the pandemic began. Read our separate articles on how to speed up your internet and how to speed up your Wi-Fi if this is what you’re experiencing.

Its advisable to run a system scan to ensure that there are no erroneous pieces of software causing harm and slowing down your machine. If you rely on Windows Defender for your security then youll need to go to the Start Menu > Settings > Update and Security > Windows Security then in the right-hand panel click Open Windows Security .

Click this and then in the next window on the right hand side there are options to run a Quick, Full, or Custom scan. Make sure you wont need your PC for a little while and opt for the Full version.

Then click on Scan now. If Windows finds anything untoward it will let you know and suggest ways to deal with the issue.

If you use another antivirus package, such as AVG, Norton, McAfee, or similar, youll need to launch the program and find the option to perform a system scan. They are usually very easy to discover.

It may seem odd for a tips article to tell you to turn off Windows 10’s Tips feature, but it can reduce processing that Windows needs to do to display relevant tips for your system. The same can be said for Notifications. If Windows doesn’t need to generate a notification, your computing will go faster. I have over 40 apps that are capable of sending notifications. Simply open the Settings app’s Notifications & actions page to change the notification settings. You’ll see a list of individual apps that can send notifications, and you can uncheck those you don’t want to hear from. If you have a lot of these, too, go through the list and you’re bound to find sources from which you have no need to be notified. The distraction savings alone can speed up your PC use, if only in terms of your perception of computing speed. An easy way to pause notifications is to tap the Focus Assist button in the Action Center. This also makes it easier to re-enable them later.

RAM is temporary storage memory used by your PC to run programs. The more programs you use, the more RAM you need and if you dont have enough, your computer will slow down. You can easily add more RAM by buying an extra memory stick, but you can also replace or buy a completely new RAM if necessary.

    Disable Apps Relaunch On Startup

Windows 10 has a feature that can restart the apps from your last session after a reboot even before you sign in. Although this is a useful feature that can speed up the process to resume where you left off quickly, it can also impact the system performance.

If the app re-launch at startup is enabled, you can disable it with these steps:

  • Open Settings.
  • Turn off the toggle switch for the apps you want to stop running in the background.

  • Turn off the Let apps run in the background toggle switch to disable the feature for all modern apps .
  • Once you complete the steps, apps will not waste any more resources when you do not actively use them to increase system performance.

The option is only available for Microsoft Store apps. If you have some traditional desktop apps that run in the background, you will need to change the application settings.

Shutting Down And Restarting Windows Isnt An Option Its A Necessity

During college, I had some friends who probably didnt know the Shut Down and Restart options existed on Windows. Their poor PCs had to stay up for weeks without getting any chance to restart even once.

Do keep in mind, your PC can survive a few days without rebooting or shutting down. But, that doesnt mean one always should keep it running.

Restarting or shutting down your PC at regular intervals clears the system memory that gets consumed over time, and it also kills all the errant processes to speed up your Windows 10 PC.

Upgrade Your System To Make The Computer Run Faster

Its possible that your system is outdated and the best way to give your PC a boost would be to get some new hardware. But before you spend money, try optimizing your old hardware with CleanMyPC first. Set up the various PC cleaning options to automatically work on your PC, and then see if that helps make your computer faster.

If its still slow, then fine, it may be time to reach for the wallet. There are two purchases that would make the biggest difference for your PC: RAM and an SSD.

RAM stands for random access memory, and its what programs use to run. When there isnt enough available RAM, your PC slows down. Adding a new stick of RAM or replacing your current sticks with faster and bigger RAM will have a significant effect on the speed of your PC.

The other hardware solution to look for would be a new SSD. Solid State Drives are much faster than regular hard disks, although they are also more expensive. Plus, you should use the SSD for your system drive, which would mean a fresh installation of Windows. Youll have to decide if youre willing to make all the effort, but if you do, the results could be worth it.
