Turn On High Performance Via The Power Slider
Windows assumes you want an energy-efficient computer. But you can trade electricity for speed. This tip depends upon whether your PC enables it: The so-called Windows power slider is nearly ubiquitous on laptops, less so on desktops. It puts the PC in a high-performance mode, which in a laptop means increased performance for gaming, sayat the expense of battery life.
Previously you had to use the Control Panel to do this, but now you can do it right from the Windows 10 Taskbar. Right-click the battery icon, and adjust the power/performance slider all the way to the right. Note: Windows considers your PC while plugged in, and when running on battery power, as two separate states. Youll typically need to adjust the power/performance slider while plugged in, and then adjust it again while unplugged and running on battery.
You can access the Windows 10 power/performance slider by clicking the battery icon in the taskbar.
While plugged in, theres really no penalty for pushing your PC into performance mode, though it will consume a bit more power and the fans may be louder.

Disabling Auto Windows Update
Its possible that since your laptop is new, it is slowed down for the time being due to an update running in the background. Whenever Windows is running an update, you will see an icon at the bottom right section of your laptops screen. A good idea is to have the OS prompt for permission before the process goes through so youre always aware of when an update is in progress. You can do that if you have administrator privileges.
- Press the Windows Key + R together and type regedit
- navigate to the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
- Right click on the Windows folder and choose New > Key, name the key WindowsUpdate, hit Enter
- Right click on the key youve just created select New > Key, name it AU, hit Enter
- Go inside the new key, right click, choose New and click on DWORD Value, name this one AUOptions, hit Enter
- Double click on the final key youve just created and change the current value to 2, click OK, close
Overclock The Laptop Graphics Card For Optimized Gaming
Want to know how to improve graphics on your laptop? The best way is overclocking.
While risky for the beginner, overclocking can force additional performance out of the graphics card. Tools are available for both AMD and Nvidia GPUs, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding something suitable.
The main problems are with power and heat. Overclocking uses more electricity, so you’ll need to adjust your computer’s power settings appropriately . But overclocking also increases the temperature of the GPU.
Usually, this is handled by the laptop’s built-in cooling system. You should regularly clean the heatsinks and fans, as outlined in #1. If not, your laptop will automatically shut down—as a safety precaution—when it gets too hot.
Looking for an overclocking tool for your GPU? The most popular at present is MSI Afterburner, which is suitable for Nvidia and AMD graphics cards.
You can enjoy good results with overclocking, but it is something you must do with care. Our guide to overclocking your GPU safely should help here.

Speed Up Windows 10 For Free: Tips For A Faster Pc
Its a common complaint: My Windows PC is running slow. Annoyingly slow. You can add RAM, or buy a faster SSD, but that costs money. No, your first order of business should be an attempt to wring free performance from Windows. In the following nine steps we show you how to speed up your Windows 10 PC without spending a dime.
Be warned: There could be trade-offs. More speed could mean less battery life in the case of a laptop, or you may have to give up a beloved program thats bogging things down. Youll have to decide what sacrifices youre willing to make in order to make your Windows PC faster.
Keep Your Laptop Clean And Dust
Want to know how to improve gaming performance on your laptop but have no technical skills? Just clean it.
You’ll only enjoy improved performance on your laptop with a proactive attitude to physical maintenance. Dust and dirt are the enemies of performance. This detritus will reduce airflow, resulting in a computer that gets too hot.
Once the heat builds, the processor, GPU, and most other components will slow down. This doesn’t make for an effective gaming machine.
The best way to deal with this is to remove the dust. Obviously, this isn’t easy. Your laptop is probably sealed, and if it isn’t, opening it will almost certainly invalidate the warranty. The solution is to use some very specific cleaning techniques.
But it isn’t just the vents on your laptop that you need to keep clear. If you’re using the keyboard regularly it’s important to ensure there is no dust, food, or other matter able to cause sticky keys.
For that matter, for top gaming performance, you don’t want a mucky screen, either.

Swap Out Your Hard Drive For An Ssd
If your laptop has a mechanical hard drive, then swapping it for a solid-state drive could pay dividends. As there are no moving parts, an SSD has read and write speeds far quicker than any traditional drive, as well as better reliability, and can revitalise an ailing system. If your laptop already uses an SSD, it might also be worth considering an upgrade to a faster SSD.
Over the past few years, SSD prices have gone down and capacities up, so putting one in your laptop won’t break the bank. However, as with RAM, many laptop hard drives wont be replaceable or will use specialised form-factors which prevent the use of third-party drives.
Assuming your laptop will support an upgrade, you can use a cloning tool to copy everything from your old disk to an SSD rather than reinstalling Windows from scratch. Numerous freeware tools can be used for this task, such as Todo Backup Free 9.0. Many SSD manufacturers will also include a license key for disk imaging tools with the purchase of a new drive.
If You Are Using A New Hp Laptop
Step 1: Wait until Windows 10 Update is Complete
Most new HP notebooks come pre-installed with Microsoft Windows 10 operating system. When Windows 10 is setting up the initial update, your laptop will take a bit longer to boot up. And there doesnt seem to be an effective way to get around with this yet.
Windows 10 periodically checks for updates so you dont have to. When an update is available, its automatically downloaded and installed, keeping your device up to date with the latest features.
Step 2: Remove Auto-Run Programs or Services
Dont be surprised! All new PCs are pre-loaded with bloatware, in other words, programs that have been installed by default. However, most likely you will never need them.
Even worse, some programs sneak into the startup list and run automatically when your HP boots up.
According to this finding from ComputerWorld on how much bloatware can slow down a PC, it says:
Computers that are free of third-party softwareon average, start up 104% faster, shut down 35% faster and have 28 minutes more battery life than the same laptops with bloatware.
How to fix that? There are a lot of manual fixes out there, but they either require time or technical skills to implement properly. If you are a computer person, youll be able to sort that out on your own. If you are new to computers, I recommend using CleanMyPC to handle them for you.
Furthermore, you can use the program to uninstall the bloatware in batch, saving time doing so one by one.

How To Speed Up Hp Laptop Windows 10
An HP laptop, like any other, can become slow and unresponsive over time. Laptops can become slow to start up, shut down, open files, and launch software. Slow laptops will be less responsive to user actions than faster ones. For example, users might have to wait minutes for large applications to open or even for files to save. In the worst cases, slow HP laptops can almost grind to a standstill and take many minutes to respond to user actions.
Some HP laptop users have posted on support forums about HP laptops running slow and freezing.
A few users have even said that their old PCs were faster than new HP laptops. One user said this:
I purchased a laptop from HP a few days ago, and its specs are supposed to be pretty good Sometimes it takes 2-3 seconds or so to load a page or just to switch between tabs or programs Often, opening a new tab takes a while too! Its so much slower than my previous laptop I have been using for five years, which has worse specs, LOL and my previous one is also a touch-screen one

Uninstall Programs You Dont Use
We often install huge programs without realizing how much space theyre taking up. If you think that might be the case, you can easily uninstall any programs you dont use. Even if its a program you do use now and again, if its particularly large, it might be worth simply reinstalling each time you need it.
To uninstall a program, head over to Control Panel> Programs> Programs and Features.
Go though the programs and decide which ones, if any, you dont need. If youre unsure about a particular program, you could simply use a search engine to find out more. Alternatively, you can also use a tool like the aptly named PC Decrapifier to help you distinguish the good from the bad.
Take A Look At Your Web Browser
Minor adjustments can often make a difference with the speed of your PC. Something as simple as which browser you use can slow down or speed up the rate at which web pages, videos, and images load. If you have been using a certain browser and notice that there is a lag time, consider an alternative to see if the loading speeds are better.
The type of browser you use is not only the thing that may be slowing down your computer when youre using the web. If you have a full cache that has not been emptied in a while, then youll want to visit your settings and make sure that its empty.
Fortunately, its an easy fix. There are two ways to do this in the more popular web browsers:
- Look for the Browsing History option
- Select Temporary Internet Files and Website Data

Bite The Bullet And Buy A New Laptop
It is worth considering this as an option, although it might be seen as a last resort. Buying a new laptop, of course, isnt some frivolous purchase. It can be, in fact, quite expensive to do so. However, if youre already spending more than youd like on repair costs, it could actually be better, and more financially sustainable, to invest in a brand new device. After all, most devices come with at least a year of warranty, which means that some issues will be eligible for repairs, like faulty hardware or operating system malfunctions.
Furthermore, there are plenty of good quality, affordable laptops on the market. Even though some may find it difficult to let go of their beloved hardware, there are still lots of good options available to purchase, and you might find some to be just as good, if not better, than your legacy device.
It is worth doing some research if you decide to get a new laptop. Its the perfect opportunity to reevaluate your hardware needs, whether they are business-related or personal, as well as any other requirements youd like to see in your new device.
Many manufacturers have reimagined their offerings following last years shift to remote working, by making their devices more suitable to the current working conditions. For example, HP unveiled a new line of home office laptops designed to power hybrid work environments and growing personal creative studios.
Check For Spyware And Viruses
Its almost impossible not to pick up a virus at some point while browsing the web, but the new Windows Defender software has made it easier than ever to find malware that may be causing major issues on your PC. Third-party programs are also easy to install and can be just as effective in removing any spyware or viruses you may have picked up.
Some applications are better than others and some can take up more space, which can then cause issues with speed. Ideally, when youre discovering how to speed up windows, you want to find software that is efficient and removes malware completely, but that doesnt take up too much space on your PC.
Consider installing two types of software for computer performance monitoring. Malware cleanup programs can solve lagging or blatant issues with speed or popups. However, you should also look into applications that offer ongoing protection and run in the background. Again, keep in mind that these antivirus programs take up space, so you want to choose one that is designed not to affect performance.
If you want to discover how you can improve computer performance, a little research can help you to find the software that works within your budget or with your specific type of operating system. There can be compatibility issues if youre downloading free software, so double-check everything before installing it so you dont run into additional performance problems.
