Clean Out Your Registry
Under the Windows hood, the Registry tracks and controls just about everything about the way Windows works and looks. That includes information about where your programs are stored, which DLLs they use and share, what file types should be opened by which program, and just about everything else.
But the Registry is a very messy thing. When you uninstall a program, for example, that programs settings dont always get cleaned up in the Registry. So over time, it can get filled with countless outdated settings of all types. And that can lead to system slowdowns.
Dont even think of trying to clean any of this out yourself. Its impossible. To do it, you need a Registry Cleaner. There are plenty available, some free and some paid. But theres really no need to outright buy one, because the free Auslogics Registry Cleaner does a solid job.
Check If Your Laptop Is Thermal Throttling
If youre reading this, then lowering your CPU peak performance didnt help in fixing the problem. If so, then the likely culprit is thermal throttling. However, figuring this one out isnt as easy as simply checking if your computer is warm to the touch. You will need to download a software called MSI Afterburner.
While its downloading, look up and note down the clock frequencies of your laptops CPU and GPU, as well as the maximum temperatures they sustain when under high load. From the MSI afterburner program, turn on the option that shows the boost clock and temperatures. While performing your usual tasks, record these and compare them with the expected values that you get from the internet. If the clock speeds are lower than expected and the temperature is significantly higher than normal, then it means your laptop is thermally throttling.
How To Fix A Very Slow Hanging Or Freezing Windows 7 Pc
I encountered a weird problem with my Windows 7 laptop few days ago. It suddenly refuses to boot and when it does boot, it becomes very slow and occasionally hangs or freeze.
I took it to a local repairer and I was told the only solution was to format and reinstall a new Windows OS on the PC.I was sad and angry because if I decide to go that route, I will lose a lot of important files as I last backup months ago.
I did some research on Google as per the problem and I discovered the reason for the freezing and hanging was as a result of a lot of application trying to automatically start when the PC boots up.
To fix a very slow, lagging Windows 7 machine, the applications that are automatically initialized on start-up and other unnecessary ones that run in the background eating up memory need to disable
Follow the steps below to disable the startup applications.
For a quicker temporary fix on the General tab, chose the Diagnostic startup or the Selective startup with only Load system services checked.

Turn Off Any Video Backgrounds Or Filters
As you attend a meeting, you can change your background to a virtual one. You can also add video filters to further enhance how others see you. Although this is convenient , it can put a strain on your Zoom app.
Zoom AI continually crops you from the rest of the background while running other processes like mirroring your video, which consumes lots of resources. The process continues in the background until the meeting ends.
Depending on whether it improves the app’s performance, you may want to turn off virtual backgrounds and remove video filters. Here’s how:
Getting Started With A Laggy Zoom App
When Zoom is laggy, you should firstly check your internet connection and test the app on another computer if you can.
Test any other virtual conference apps to see if they behave similarly. If other apps run perfectly except Zoom, the internet isn’t causing the hiccup and the problem lies within the app itself.
Next, ensure that the problem isn’t coming from the Zoom backend. You can confirm this by running Zoom on another computer. There is some technical issue with Zoom if the lag occurs on both laptops. Zoom should fix the problem on its own.
If the issue persists only on your computer, you need to investigate further. Apply the following fixes to resolve the issue.

You Have To Quit Programs Running In The Background
If your laptop is slow, one of the easiest things you can do is close as many programs as possible. However, there are some programs that continue to run in the background even after you close them. These programs can eat up your processing power, which can slow your laptop down.
The fix: You can use Windows Task Manager to close programs running in the background. To do this, hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete on your keyboard and select Task Manager. Then make sure to click More details in the bottom-left corner. This lets you see which programs are using up your computers CPU, memory, and more.
You can sort all the programs running on your laptops from the most to least resource-intensive by clicking the header of any column. Then you can select a program and click End Task in the bottom-right corner of the window to force quit the program.
However, there might be certain programs running in the background that are necessary for your laptop to work properly. So, make sure you know what a program is before choosing to force quit it.

Some Web Browsers Are Resource Hogs
Your web browser could be the culprit, especially if you’ve lost count of the number of windows and tabs you have open. Each browser window and tab takes up memory and processing power and, over time, that will begin to slow down your PC.
You can view a breakdown of extensions and tabs that could be to blame in Task Manager by clicking on the arrow next to your browser’s name. Alternatively, if you use Chrome, it has a built-in task manager of its own. Launch it by pressing Shift+Esc while using Chrome, or click on the menu button > More Tools> Task manager.
If you find that your browser is often causing your PC to slow to a crawl, try a different browser or keep an eye on how many tabs or windows you have open at a given time.

Identify Programs That Slow Down Your Computer
If you have programs that use a lot of memory, you need to decide if theyre worth the resources theyre using. These could be high-level apps, items that start automatically that you dont use, or a program you opened previously and have forgotten about. Removing these programs can help speed up a computer.
Fragmented Files Are Slowing Down Your Laptop
Whenever you create, delete, or edit a file on your computer, some of that data becomes fragmented. That means pieces of files are stored in various parts of your hard drive. Over time, this can cause your laptop to slow down because your drive has to jump around to find each piece of data.
In order to consolidate and organize the data on your drives, you can defragment your computer. And, while Windows 10 automatically defragments files once a week, you can also do this manually any time you want to.
The fix: To defrag a drive, click the magnifying glass icon in the bottom-left corner of your screen. Then type Defrag in the search bar and click Open. In the pop-up window, click Analyze to check how much space is taken up by fragmented files on your hard drive.
If there are lots of fragmented files, click Optimize. Finally, wait for the drive to reach 0% fragmented before you start using programs or opening files again.
However, you should only defrag your drive if it is labeled as a hard disk drive under Media type. If you see that your drive is labeled as a solid-state drive, defragging it can actually wear down your drive more.
If you want to know more about how to defrag a hard drive on your Windows 10 computer, check out our step-by-step guide here.

Laptop Is Lagging All Of A Sudden
I opened started the laptop and it was lagging a lot, even simple tasks like open task manager were taking more than 20 seconds. I thought it was the hard disk or the CPU, but nothing was wrong with them.
I was starting to think it was a virus or a trojan, but the antivirus didn’t find anything wrong. I used the windows defender deep scan, then AVG deep scan, and malwarebytes, but nothing was found.
I turned off my internet connection, and went into safe boot to check if something was wrong with my system.
I used a registry cleaner, and fixed the problems, but it was still lagging like before. A weird thing I noticed is that exactly the same issues were detected after restarting the laptop.
So here is what I think the problem might be, although I’m not sure if these are the cause of the lag:
1 Windows has corrupt files, but I didn’t find any integrity violations, but every time I turn on the laptop, i recieve a bios message saying that it can not determine the power AC.
2. A keylogger, but the disk is not used and neither the CPU has a weird behavior .
3. The drivers, but I can’t check if they are outdated because of the huge lag. The sound of the computer is lagging
4. The most realistic reason i can find is a disk defragmentation, as the lag seems similar to one of a disk used to 100%, but it doesn’t explain the low fps, even the desktop is lagging and things like the file explorer run at around 5 fps.

Optimize Your Games Video Settings
If your game is too resource-hungry and your graphics card cannot provide enough processing power, the gaming experience could be frustrating. Setting a lower detail level or reducing resolution in the game settings can help a lot. Focus on reducing eye candy while maintaining things such as viewing distance that help you win. Switch on an FPS indicator if its supported by the game settings, and fine-tune settings until you can consistently squeeze 3060 frames per second out of your system. More is better less is usually considered unplayable for dynamic games such as shooters. For online gaming more than 60 FPS is highly recommended.

Turn Off Search Indexing
Windows 10 indexes your hard disk in the background, allowing you in theory to search your PC more quickly than if no indexing were being done. But slower PCs that use indexing can see a performance hit, and you can give them a speed boost by turning off indexing. Even if you have an SSD disk, turning off indexing can improve your speed, because the constant writing to disk that indexing does can eventually slow down SSDs.
To get the maximum benefit in Windows 10, you need to turn indexing off completely. To do so, type services.msc in the Windows 10 search box and press Enter. The Services app appears. Scroll down to either Indexing Service or Windows Search in the list of services. Double-click it, and from the screen that appears, click Stop. Then reboot your machine. Your searches may be slightly slower, although you may not notice the difference. But you should get an overall performance boost.
Heres how to turn off Windows 10 indexing.
If youd like, you can turn off indexing only for files in certain locations. To do this, type index in the Windows 10 search box and click the Indexing Options result that appears. The Indexing Options page of the Control Panel appears. Click the Modify button, and youll see a list of locations that are being indexed, such as Microsoft Outlook, your personal files, and so on. Uncheck the box next to any location, and it will no longer be indexed.

Remove Web Results From Windows 10 Search
Search indexing in Windows 10 has come a long way from its origins in previous Windows versions. What this feature does is create an index of files and folders throughout your system, along with their metadata, to find them more efficiently when you try and look them up using the operating systems built-in search function. In recent years, the way Windows handles search indexing has been radically improved, but it can still be worth optimising if you want to make your system more efficient.
First, you can disable the web results that appear in Windows 10s search menu, because let’s face it, youll almost certainly use a web browser for searching. Simply hit the Windows key, type gpedit.msc and hit enter to bring up the Group Policy Editor. With this open, click on Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search.
Find the policies labelled ‘Do not allow web search’, ‘Don’t search the web or display web results in Search’ and ‘Don’t search the web or display web results in Search over metered connections’, then double-click to edit them and set preference for each one to enabled. Youll need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect, but once they do, you should stop seeing web results and suggestions in your system search bar.
