If Necessary: Refresh Windows 10
Maybe you feel that your PC is such a mess that you don’t want to spend the effort to clean up Windows 10. In that case, you can use a built-in option to reinstall a fresh copy of Windows.
You might know about the Reset this PC option available in the Recovery settings. However, using this with certain options will restore your PC to how it was out of the box, including the preinstalled manufacturer bloatware. To avoid this, you can use another method.
To use it, hit the same Get started button in the Recovery menu. Pick Keep my files, choose whether to download or reinstall locally, pick settings, and then make sure you pick No for Restore preinstalled apps?.
This is equivalent to the Fresh Start option found in the Device performance & health section of the Windows Security app in older Windows 10 versions. It reinstalls Windows 10 and updates it to the latest version, as well as removing all installed apps. Only your personal files and “some Windows settings” are kept.
Even though Windows promises to keep them safe, make sure you back up your files before doing this, in case something goes wrong. You should also make a note of any license keys you’ll need to reactivate software after the refresh.
Having to reinstall all your programs by hand will take some time. But if your computer is a mess, it might still be worth it to get a clean system.
How To Reclaim Hard Drive Space By ‘shrinking’ Windows 10
ByMelanie Pinola04 December 2015
Windows 10 has a smaller footprint than earlier versions of Windows, but if you have a Windows tablet or laptop with a small storage drive, every byte counts. Here are three ways to make Windows take up less room on your hard drive or SSD.
A fresh install of Windows 10 takes up about 15 GB of storage space. Most of that is made up of system and reserved files while 1 GB is taken up by default apps and games that come with Windows 10. This might not sound a lot, but if you have a cheap 32GB Windows laptop or even a 64GB one, it’s a significant portion of your storage space taken up by the operating system. For example, the Lenovo Ideapad 100S comes with just 32GB of internal memory and only 17GB of free space out of the box. You can reduce Windows’s footprint by uninstalling default Windows 10 apps, disabling the hibernation, and tweaking the virtual memory settings. All of these strategies work in previous versions of Windows, except for uninstalling Windows 10 default apps.
Delete System Restore Points In Windows 11
Whenever you bring up an important change in your Windows 11 PC such as installing a program or deleting one, downloading windows updates, or installing new drivers, your Windows creates restore points on your PC. Your PC can easily get back to the optimized state if anything goes wrong while applying these major changes if anything goes wrong.
As much as the System Restore Points are useful, they take up a hefty amount of your systems space. If you are running low on space after upgrading to Windows 11, you can delete these System Restore Points to create more space. Alternatively, you can also disable this feature so that the restore points are not at all created on your Windows 11 PC. Lets see how to erase the system restore points created on your PC:
- First of all, you open the Start Menu on your Windows 11 PC and type System Restore in the Windows 11 Search bar. Now choose the Create a restore point feature of the Control Panel from the Search Result.
- Another method is to simply use the Win+R shortcut to open the Run dialog box on your Windows 11 PC and type sysdm.cpl in the search bar. Finally hit the Enter key.
- Now go to the System Protection section in the System Properties dialog box. Now you need to select the Local Disk in the Protection Settings. After this, hit the Configure button.
- Now press the Delete button present in the Disk Space usage section. This will erase all the stored restored points in that drive.

What Happens If I Delete The Recovery Partition
You will not notice any change in daily use. This partition mainly stores copies of files that are used to repair the operating system boot in case of data loss or corruption. If you back up your personal information by other means, and the idea of reinstalling Windows doesn’t bother you, this may not be a major problem for you.
Amd And Nvidia Driver Folders
Graphics drivers, whether AMDs or Nvidias, are notorious for unpacking their driver installation files onto your main OS drive and then not tidying up the mess theyve made. Even if youre sure to clear your downloads folder during the installation process the drivers will often make a safe copy of the important files necessary for install within your PCs main directory either under the filename Nvidia or AMD.
These can often take up 800MB or more, plus theyll keep stacking up every time a new driver update rolls out. Dont be fooled, however, you dont actually need these files once installation is complete, so you can easily recycle everything in this drive without remorse. Lovely.

Free Up Storage Space On Your Pc
Already run out of storage space on your speedy SSD and stuck installing the latest games on an ageing hard drive you found in a cupboard under the stairs? Fear not, weve put together the best tips we could muster to get rid of all your storage goblins, free up as much space on your storage drives as possible, and get rid of all the needless files that Windows has squirreled away on your OS.
Gone are the days when you could squeeze the very best AAA titles onto 700MB of disk space. Instead, we have to deal with installation files occasionally well over 100GB, for example, Final Fantasy XV launched earlier this year on PC with over 150GB of install files, thats over 200 Half Life installs from back in the day.
Still in need of more storage space? Here are the best SSDs for gaming.
Luckily, storage space has dropped dramatically in price to keep up with the increased demand, allowing us to enjoy the highest resolution textures our graphics cards can handle. One gigabyte of storage space on a hard drive back in 1998 would cost you roughly $50 which would leave Final Fantasys install folder valued at $7,500. Nowadays, a gigabyte could cost you as little as two cents.
But while the SATA interface was supposedly all the speed you could ever need, SSDs came along and massively sped up our PCs for a price. Unfortunately, SSDs cost a pretty penny, so keeping as much of that precious storage space clear is critical.
