Disable Apps Relaunch On Startup

Windows 10 has a feature that can restart the apps from your last session after a reboot even before you sign in. Although this is a useful feature that can speed up the process to resume where you left off quickly, it can also impact the system performance.

If the app re-launch at startup is enabled, you can disable it with these steps:

  • Open Settings.
  • Turn off the toggle switch for the apps you want to stop running in the background.

  • Turn off the Let apps run in the background toggle switch to disable the feature for all modern apps .
  • Once you complete the steps, apps will not waste any more resources when you do not actively use them to increase system performance.

The option is only available for Microsoft Store apps. If you have some traditional desktop apps that run in the background, you will need to change the application settings.

    Block Apps After Reboot

To make Windows 10 faster, you must block apps from automatically restarting after reboot. It is different from Background and Startup apps. Windows 10 allows some apps to restart their services and launch the last session so the apps are ready at launch. However, it can have a detrimental effect on the performance of your Windows 10 laptop or desktop. Here is how you can disable it.

    1. Press the Windows key once and search for restart apps. Now, open Restart apps after signing in.

    2. Here, simply disable the toggle for Restart Apps and thats it.

    Use An Efficient Browser

Most of us use a web browser on our Windows 10 PC to browse the internet. In my case, I use Chrome all the time because I am deep into Googles ecosystem. However, it is well-known that Chrome is a resource hogger. It eats up most of my computer resources, making it slow and overall laggy. If you are in a similar situation, then you can use a better browser, well suited to Microsofts ecosystem.

Recently, Microsoft unveiled its Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser, and it looks awesome. The performance is on par with Chrome, and unsurprisingly, it consumes less power and resources than Google Chrome. The best part is that you can install Chrome extensions on the new Edge browser, so you are not missing out on much. I have written a short guide on installing the Chromium-based Edge on Windows 10, so check it out. I am pretty sure that you might like it.

Check For Low Disk Space And Free Up Space

You may improve performance if you free some disk space on your PC.

To check for low disk space

  • Select the Start button, then select Settings > System > Storage.

  • Your drives will be listed in the Storage area. Note the amount of free space and total size for each drive.

  • Note: If your PC is not low on space, try the next tip.

You can use Storage Sense to delete unnecessary or temporary files from your device, which can also free up space.

If you turn on Storage Sense, Windows will automatically free up space by getting rid of unnecessary filesincluding files in your recycle binwhen you’re low on disk space or at intervals you specify. The instructions below show you how to delete temporary files and how to turn on and configure Storage Sense.

If you can’t find Storage Sense on your device using the following steps, see the “Free up space with Disk cleanup” section below instead.

Note: You may not want to delete temporary files to improve performance. While these files may not be used at the moment, they help your apps load and run faster.

To delete temporary files with Storage Sense

  • Open Settings, then select System > Storage.Open Storage settings

  • Select Temporary files in the storage breakdown. Note: If you don’t see Temporary files listed, select Show more categories.

  • Windows will take a few moments to determine what files and apps are taking up the most space on your PC.

  • Select the items you want to delete, and then select Remove files.

    Turn On Automated Windows Maintenance

Every day, in the background, Windows 10 performs maintenance on your PC. It serves things like security scanning and performs system diagnostic. It also helps you to make sure everything is automatically fixed and solved if it finds any problems.

This allows your laptop to run at its peak performance. By default, this automatic maintenance runs every day at 2:00 A.M., as long as your device is plugged with a power source and is asleep.

Sometimes, this feature can be accidentally turned off, or you have not had your laptop plugged in for some time, so the maintenance has not been done. You can turn this on in your system and run it every day, and you can run it manually if you would like.

Step a) Run the Control Panel app and select System and Security > Security and Maintenance.

Step b) In the Maintenance section, under Automatic Maintenance, select Start maintenance if you want it to run that immediately.

To make sure that it runs every day:

    • Select the Time you wish to maintenance to run and the box next to Allow scheduled maintenance to wake up my computer at the scheduled time.

Step c) Go to Control Panel> System and Security> System> Advanced system settings.

Step d) Open the performance section and select the Settings, having a full list of options.

Step e) You can select and Adjust for best performance, or you can remove it individually.

How To Make Your Computer Faster And Speed Up Your Windows 10 PC in 2020!

RELATED:It’s Time: Why You Need to Upgrade to an SSD Right Now

There are other ways to make your computer boot faster, too. If your computer doesnt have a solid-state drive especially if youve upgraded a Windows 7-era computer that came with a mechanical hard drive upgrading your Windows 10 PC to a solid-state drive will dramatically improve its boot speed along with everything else that requires saving and accessing files. An SSD is the single most important upgrade the average computer can get, and yes, youll definitely notice it.

PCs that came with Windows 10 like PCs that came with Windows 8 use UEFI firmware, and boot faster for that reason alone. On an older computer thats been upgraded to Windows 10, you can potentially get some boot-speed savings by tweaking a few BIOS settings. For example, if your BIOS checks your computers DVD drive or network locations every time you boot before it boots from your hard drive, you can change the boot order and have it boot from the hard drive first, which will speed things up.

    Increase Page File Size

On Windows 10, the “page file” is a hidden file on the hard drive that works as memory, and it acts as an overflow of the system memory, which holds data for apps currently running on the device.

If you increase the size of the paging file, it can help to boost system performance.

To modify the page file to increase performance, use these steps:

  • Open Settings.
  • Click the OK button again.
  • Restart your computer.
  • After you complete the steps, the device will restart, and you should then notice a boost in performance while using apps. The performance will be more noticeable when configuring the page file in a Solid-State Drive.

If the new settings are causing issues or performance does not improve, you can always revert the changes with the same instructions outlined above. However, on step No. 9, make sure to select the System managed size option and check the Automatically manage paging files size for all drives option.

The saying ‘time heals all wounds’ can be applied to most things, such as physical injuries or troubled relationships, but it’s somewhat redundant for hardware.

For desktop PC time is rather unkind their average lifespan is around five to eight years, and it’s even shorter for laptop-owners . Unfortunately technology doesn’t last forever but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it can lead to new, innovative products that make our lives that little bit easier.

Still, letting go is not easy, especially if you’ve invested a lot into a laptop or desktop. But if your hardware starts to get increasingly slow, and starts to impact your productivity, you’re going to have to find ways to fix it. Luckily, there are some helpful hacks to extend the lifespan of most laptops and desktop computers.

Nothing is guaranteed, and you will have to upgrade, eventually, but we’ve compiled the best advice to help buy you some more time to find a suitable replacement.

    Close System Tray Programs

If your computer is off to a slow start, then its possible you have too many programs starting up at the same time as Windows itself. Items in the system tray often launch at startup and then stay running while you use your computer.

To access these items, click the upwards arrow toward the right side of your taskbar.

If there are any programs you dont need to have running, right-click them and close.

    Switch Off Unnecessary Animations

Ever since Windows Vista , Microsofts operating system has become cluttered with fancy graphics and animated flourishes that do little to improve productivity. By default, Windows will automatically disable some of these based on how powerful your system is, but if youre willing to sacrifice a bit more aesthetic appeal for the sake of speed, its easy to switch all of the graphics off and run on the bare essentials.

To do this, open that Start Menu and start typing in ‘Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows’. Click on this option and from the scroll menu untick everything you don’t wish to see on the desktop . Click OK and this will change the desktop to something more basic looking.

On systems other than Windows 10, switching everything off gives the desktop a Windows 95-style look and feel. Its surprising to note how much of the so-called ‘flat look’ of Windows 10 relies on graphical flourishes once everything is switched off.

Using The New Add Or Remove Programs Feature

How To Make Windows 10 Laptop Faster [Tutorial]

Microsoft wants you to forget about the old Control Panel and move over to the new Settings interface, which is why the primary way to uninstall programs has also been moved there.

To access this uninstaller, navigate to your Windows Search bar and type Add or Remove, then select the Add or remove programs option.

This will open up the Apps & Features tab in the Windows Settings and you will now see all the programs and apps that are installed on your computer.

The list also includes any apps or games that have been installed through the Microsoft Store.

In order to uninstall a program, simply click on one and select Uninstall. This will run the official uninstaller for the app, as long as all the files are still intact.

Note that sometimes the uninstaller will just run in the background, so you should wait until the entry disappears from the list before moving onto the next one.

The nice thing about the new uninstaller is that you can even filter installed programs by drive, so if your mission is to speed up a specific drive, it is very simple to do. You can also sort programs by size so you can see which ones hog up the most space.

You can also select any Microsoft Store app you have installed and it will have a separate Advanced options hyperlink under the title. Click on it to see how much data and battery the app is using as well as what permissions it has.

Then click the Startup tab. You’ll see a list of programs and services that run when Windows starts.
