How Do I Free Up Space On My Computer
To increase your computers available memory to boost performance, you can either replace the hard drive with a larger one or youve got to make some cuts to what you keep on your computer. Dont worry though: if you havent taken a look at your programs before, chances are high there are some unused items that could be clogging up your PCs performance.
You can uninstall programs under the Control Panel, or by hitting the Windows key and typing Add or Remove Programs to pull the menu up. You can view programs by the order in which they were installed it might be helpful to sort by first installed to see if there is any freeware installed on your PC that you dont need. This can also potentially help your computer boot up faster if you are removing unnecessary programs that automatically run at startup.
It should be noted that malware, harmful software installed on computers which can absolutely slow down your PC, will generally not appear in this list since it is deceptive by design.
How To Update Your Applications
Our studies have shown that over 52% of applications installed on PCs are outdated. Sometimes thats due to people ignoring updates. Other times its because the applications dont include a working updater.
Old apps can cause stability and performance issues, so be sure to check out our guide on updating your apps.
Defragment Your Hard Disk
Defragmenting your hard disk actually shouldnt be necessary on modern versions of Windows. Itll automatically defragment mechanical hard drives in the background. Solid-state drives dont really need traditional defragmentation, although modern versions of Windows will optimize them and thats fine.
You shouldnt worry about defragmentation most of the time. However, if you do have a mechanical hard drive and youve just put a lot of files on the drive for example, copying a huge database or gigabytes of PC game files those files might be defragmented because Windows hasnt gotten around to defragmenting them yet. In this situation, you might want to open the disk defragmenter tool and perform a scan to see if you need to run a manual defrag program.

Quit Foreground Background Programs That Are Not In Use
Programs that are not in use right now, but are running regardless, are the prime reasons for your laptops resources being spent for the wrong task. Close any program windows that are not necessary to the work at hand and you should see an almost immediate increase in performance, especially if you have an older, not-so-powerful machine.
Not all programs can be simply closed by hitting the X button. You may also want to keep an eye on whats running in the background. You can do this by hitting Ctrl+Shift+Esc and seeing whats running in the Windows task manager. You can also check your system tray by hitting the upward facing arrow on the right side of your taskbar to see if any programs are running in the background.
Solution 2 Optimize The Startup
If your ASUS laptop or PC takes 60+ seconds to log in the screen, you’d better optimize it.
For Windows 7, Vista, or XP user:
Use this utility called MSConfig to tune up Windows startup.
For Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 users:
Right-click on the taskbar, then select “Task Manager” > “Startup”.
If a program shows Enabled, that means it will automatically run when you start up your ASUS laptop. Disable or uninstall those you don’t need. The fewer Enabled items you have, the faster your PC will boot up.

Physically Clean Your Computer
Your PC or laptop fans keep your computer cool by cycling air through it but they also collect loads of dust. Excess dust slows down or even stops your fans, which traps heat and leads to poor performance and frequent crashes.
Thats why I physically clean my computer by opening up my PC case and laptops to remove dust bunnies with compressed air. While youre at it, give your monitor and keyboard a good cleaning as well.
When youre done, make sure cool air can reach the vents. Place laptops and desktops on hard, flat surfaces and try to avoid using your laptop in bed.

Troubleshooting: How To Fix A Slow Hp Laptop
When you run your computer programs, some of the temporary files are stored in hard drives. In this case, you need to delete some temporary files to avoid laziness on your PC. If your laptop has an antivirus scanner, spyware protection, or other security programs running in the background of your PC. It will disturb the performance of your computer. I want quick fixes for your slow HP laptop, follow these methods:
Not Enough Storage Space In The Pc
There are different ways your computer stores memory. Generally, the PC stores files and installed programs in the storage drive. Typically, the storage drive is a hard disk. In computers purchased in the last one or two years, the storage drive could be a solid-state drive.
PCs can slow down when the storage drive is full to the brim. Your PC needs a certain amount of available space in the storage drive. It allows the CPU to swap files and store temporary files. Lack of memory makes these tasks difficult or impossible. That could cause the operating system to slow down.
You can free up space on the storage drive by deleting old and unnecessary files. Delete temporary files to make room for new ones. Uninstall programs you no longer use. You can also move photos and videos to an external storage device, like a USB stick.
Your PC needs at least 200 MB of free space on the storage drive. Ideally, there should be more than 500 MB.
Its possible that your PC has a small storage drive. Older computers still have 500GB hard drives. You can consider upgrading to a 1TB or more storage drive. Alternatively, connect an external hard drive to your PC to store files remotely.

Check For Low Disk Space And Free Up Space
You may improve performance if you free some disk space on your PC.
To check for low disk space
Select the Start button, then select Settings > System > Storage.
Your drives will be listed in the Storage area. Note the amount of free space and total size for each drive.
Note: If your PC is not low on space, try the next tip.
You can use Storage Sense to delete unnecessary or temporary files from your device, which can also free up space.
If you turn on Storage Sense, Windows will automatically free up space by getting rid of unnecessary filesincluding files in your recycle binwhen you’re low on disk space or at intervals you specify. The instructions below show you how to delete temporary files and how to turn on and configure Storage Sense.
If you can’t find Storage Sense on your device using the following steps, see the “Free up space with Disk cleanup” section below instead.
Note: You may not want to delete temporary files to improve performance. While these files may not be used at the moment, they help your apps load and run faster.
To delete temporary files with Storage Sense
Open Settings, then select System > Storage.Open Storage settings
Select Temporary files in the storage breakdown. Note: If you don’t see Temporary files listed, select Show more categories.
Windows will take a few moments to determine what files and apps are taking up the most space on your PC.
Select the items you want to delete, and then select Remove files.

Uninstall Programs You Dont Use
We often install huge programs without realizing how much space theyre taking up. If you think that might be the case, you can easily uninstall any programs you dont use. Even if its a program you do use now and again, if its particularly large, it might be worth simply reinstalling each time you need it.
To uninstall a program, head over to Control Panel> Programs> Programs and Features.
Go though the programs and decide which ones, if any, you dont need. If youre unsure about a particular program, you could simply use a search engine to find out more. Alternatively, you can also use a tool like the aptly named PC Decrapifier to help you distinguish the good from the bad.

Use Readyboost To Speed Up Disk Caching
Windows 10 regularly stores cached data on your hard disk, and then when it needs the data, fetches it from there. The time it takes to fetch cached data depends on the speed of your hard disk. If you have a traditional hard disk instead of an SSD, theres a trick that can help speed up your cache: use Windows ReadyBoost feature. It tells Windows to cache data to a USB flash drive, which is faster than a hard disk. Fetching data from that speedier cache should speed up Windows.
First, plug a USB flash drive into one of your PCs USB ports. The flash drive needs to support at least USB 2.0, and preferably USB 3 or faster. The faster your flash drive, the more of a speed boost you should see. Also, look for a flash drive that is at least double the size of your PCs RAM for maximum performance.
After you plug in in the drive, open File Explorer and click This PC. Look for the flash drive. It may have an odd name, like UDISK 28X, or something even less-obvious. Right-click it, choose Properties and click the ReadyBoost tab.
Turn on ReadyBoost from this screen to speed up your PC.
Youll come to a screen that asks whether you want to use the flash drive as a cache and recommends a cache size. Leave the cache size as is or change it if you like. Then select Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost and click Apply and then click OK.
