Keep Your Laptop Cool
The hotter your laptop gets, the worse its performance becomes: a hot laptop will try to self-regulate its temperatures by slowing things down. Heres how to keep your laptop cool for more consistent high performance and less stress on sensitive internal components:
Clean your laptops fans and vents. As dust builds up, your laptop cant vent hot air as efficiently. Physically clean your laptop regularly, and tidy the vents so it can keep itself cool. If youre feeling brave , you can open up your laptop and clean its fans directly.
Dont put it on your lap. The word laptop is misleading. Place your laptop on a smooth, flat surface so that air can circulate underneath it. If its on your lap, or on a carpet or blanket, youll smother it.
Plug it in. When your laptop runs on battery power, things can get hot especially if youve optimized its power settings for performance. Whenever you can, keep your laptop plugged into an external power supply.
Use a cooling platform: An external cooling stand blows cool air against the underside of your laptop to improve airflow. You can pick one up for a relatively low price, and itll plug right into your laptop via USB.
Use Readyboost To Speed Up Disk Caching
Windows 10 regularly stores cached data on your hard disk, and then when it needs the data, fetches it from there. The time it takes to fetch cached data depends on the speed of your hard disk. If you have a traditional hard disk instead of an SSD, theres a trick that can help speed up your cache: use Windows ReadyBoost feature. It tells Windows to cache data to a USB flash drive, which is faster than a hard disk. Fetching data from that speedier cache should speed up Windows.
First, plug a USB flash drive into one of your PCs USB ports. The flash drive needs to support at least USB 2.0, and preferably USB 3 or faster. The faster your flash drive, the more of a speed boost you should see. Also, look for a flash drive that is at least double the size of your PCs RAM for maximum performance.
After you plug in in the drive, open File Explorer and click This PC. Look for the flash drive. It may have an odd name, like UDISK 28X, or something even less-obvious. Right-click it, choose Properties and click the ReadyBoost tab.
Turn on ReadyBoost from this screen to speed up your PC.
Youll come to a screen that asks whether you want to use the flash drive as a cache and recommends a cache size. Leave the cache size as is or change it if you like. Then select Dedicate this device to ReadyBoost and click Apply and then click OK.
Simple Tweaks To Speed Up Windows 10
Windows 10 is speedier than the previous versions of Microsoft’s desktop operating system, but you can still optimize its performance. Learn how to make your Windows 10 PC run faster with our tips.
As PC hardware continues to speed up, so does software, and Windows 10 is no exception. This is especially true of startup time: If you upgrade from Windows 7 or earlier, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how fast your machine is ready for action. There are other performance factors to consider after you’re up and running, however. Even the latest, shiniest Windows version isn’t immune to slowdowns.
The problem with a lot of Windows speedup stories is that they tell you to turn off some of the operating system’s more-fun features, such as visual animations. Most of our tips show you ways you can speed up your Windows 10 system without compromising its appearance and functionality. Most are also free, but some involve spending a little cash on software or hardware. For people with older, low-power machines who want a speed boost but don’t care about extra goodies, a couple of the tips towards the end do boost system performance at the expense of visual bling.
Note that you should beware of those “Speed Up Your PC!” ads for registry cleaners, which often lead to malware. Microsoft categorically does not support the use of registry cleaners for Windows 10.

Find And Disable Battery Draining Apps
Not all software is created equal, and you might find that some programs are too greedy and demanding on your battery. Some might be too heavy on system resources or remain active in the background for long periods.
Windows 10 logs the CPU usage of all installed software and, from that, judges how much battery each app uses. You can check this list in the Windows Settings menu.
To do so, right-click the Start menu, click Settings, and then click System > Battery. Under the current battery percentage, click See Which Apps Are Affecting Your Battery Life.
Windows lists the most power-hungry apps. It defaults to a 24-hour list, but you can switch this to show power usage over six hours or a week.
This is a useful way to see if any of your software is using an unnecessary amount of power. You can then disable or uninstall it.
You can also prevent software from running in the background. Mail apps, for instance, might regularly sync with mail servers in the background and use Wi-Fi in the process.
To prevent this, click any of the software entries in the app usage list. Uncheck the Let Windows Decide When This App Can Run in the Background and Reduce the Work the App Can Do When Its in The Background boxes that appear.
Keep Your Laptop Clean And Dust
Want to know how to improve gaming performance on your laptop but have no technical skills? Just clean it.
You’ll only enjoy improved performance on your laptop with a proactive attitude to physical maintenance. Dust and dirt are the enemies of performance. This detritus will reduce airflow, resulting in a computer that gets too hot.
Once the heat builds, the processor, GPU, and most other components will slow down. This doesn’t make for an effective gaming machine.
The best way to deal with this is to remove the dust. Obviously, this isn’t easy. Your laptop is probably sealed, and if it isn’t, opening it will almost certainly invalidate the warranty. The solution is to use some very specific cleaning techniques.
But it isn’t just the vents on your laptop that you need to keep clear. If you’re using the keyboard regularly it’s important to ensure there is no dust, food, or other matter able to cause sticky keys.
For that matter, for top gaming performance, you don’t want a mucky screen, either.

Adjust Or Disable Graphics And Animations
More recent versions of Windows come with lots of graphics, including animations such as fading effects and flyouts. These help make the application appear more sleek and refined and contribute to a better overall user experience. On the other hand, they can also slow down your computer.
Thankfully, its simple to adjust these settings and hopefully save a little processing power. Go to Control Panel> System and Security> System> Advanced system settings. Then, in the Performance section, hit Settings and youll have a full list of options.
You can select Adjust for best performance or opt to remove some individually. Its a matter of preference, but fade and shadow features are some you could probably live without.
Windows 7: Search for Performance Information and Tools, select Adjust visual effects, and use the Visual Effects tab.
Manage Automatic Updates And Downloads For Smoother Gaming
Automatic updates can be a big pain. For example, Windows Update can download updates in the background, before reminding you periodically that the update needs installing. Not only can the uninstalled update impact performance, so too can the reminders.
Unfortunately, you can’t disable Windows Updates permanently, so you have the following options:
- Keep your computer offline.
- Install updates as soon as prompted.
- From the May 2019 update , you can block updates for 35 days.
It’s unlikely that you’ll be able to completely disconnect from the internet if you’re using a gaming laptop, so installing those updates as soon as possible is the best answer.
Digital delivery systems such as Steam also push updates out. There’s also a chance that a second game will download updates in the background while you’re playing another game.
To avoid this:
You can also manage update rules for individual games.
For Automatic updates, you can choose between Always keep this game updated, Only update this game when I launch it, and High Priority.
You can select between three Background download settings: Pause background downloads while I’m playing, Always allow background downloads, Never allow background downloads.

Pc Booster #: Switch To Linux
A more drastic option to speed up your laptop is to install a Linux distribution instead, such as Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Mint, Dolphin, etc.
While its not as flexible with gaming as Windows 10, it is gradually getting closer to that mark, but it is very flexible with many utilities and apps. Linux is versatile, customizable, and fast. Use it for music, word processing, surfing the web, designing apps, building websites, downloading videos, and much more. Its free, easy to install, and there are enough versions to suit everyone, including low-resource options that will make your laptop flyat the cost of features and visual appeal.

Consider More Memory Or A Solid State Drive
If you still dont notice a significant performance increase in your computer after following this tutorial, it may be that your hardware needs a little upgrade as well. Increasing the memory in the computer is one upgrade that can improve your Windows experience, particularly when it comes to multitasking. Swapping out your mechanical primary drive for an SSD can also boost performance significantly because data can be read and written to your hard disk much faster. If you decide you want to purchase more RAM or upgrade to an SSD, I recommend consulting with a PC specialist before purchasing and installing the parts. New parts need to be compatible with your computer, and installed properly.
Install An Ssd Startup Drive
Not does Windows startup benefit, but loading and using demanding applications such as Adobe Photoshop happens much faster with an SSD. Windows Store apps can even easily be moved from a spinning hard drive to an SSD in Settings’ Apps and Features page.
For system speedup, it makes sense to replace your internal startup hard drive, and if you use a laptop, this may also be an option. But an external SSD with a USB 3.0 connection can also give you a speed boost in applications that use a lot of storage. For help in choosing which device to install, check out PCMag’s article, The Best SSDs.

Upgrade To Faster Drive
If, even after going through the reset process, you are not noticing performance improvements, then it might be time to upgrade the hard drive to an SSD.
Upgrading to a Solid-State Drive is perhaps one of the best ways to increase performance on older hardware. Usually, it’s because SSDs do not have moving parts like traditional hard drives, which means data can be read and written a lot faster.
When you replace an HDD with an SSD, Windows 10 will boots noticeable faster, apps will launch and run quicker, and the overall performance will be snappier and faster.
If you plan to upgrade to an SSD, we recommend the Samsung 860 EVO because of its fast performance, reliability, and five-year warranty.
