How To Price A Used Laptop

Don't Miss

Price Performance Reputation And Display

Tips for Buying Cheap Laptop Computers on eBay (U.S.)

This list isnt exhaustive as its based around laptops we have our own personal experiences with. However, the laptops featured in this article are selected according to a few key principles regarding the price, CPU, GPU, and display. Thus, if you find another laptop that that also fits these requirements, dont pass on just because it wasnt listed here.

One of the key points of consideration for a laptop to make this list is that it needs to be significantly cheaper than a similarly equipped laptop would cost today new. Generally, were going to be looking for laptops that can be had for between $250-700 on the used market.

On the subject of performance, Coffee-lake and Turing CPUs and GPUs marked the point where mobile computing power took a leap forward. Since then, the performance and efficiency increases have been much more incremental. Thus, for performance laptops, were ideally going to be looking at ultrabooks with at least 8th generation CPUs and gaming laptops with at least GTX 10xx-series GPUs. Most laptops from 2017 onward will fit this bill.

There are some exceptions to the quad-core rule, however. If you really only need the laptop for basic work, then youll be able to spend less by going for a 3rd-7th generation U-series CPU ultrabook . Tablets also are generally exempt from this due to the greater power draw of 4-core/8-thread CPUs in such a small chassis with limited battery capacity.

With our requirements out of the way, lets move onto the laptops.

To Bid Barter Or Stay Strong

It can be tempting to offer your product for bids on eBay or to negotiate with buyers on LetGo. After all, an item thats up for bids sells faster, and a buyer thats trying to barter is probably interested in spending some money.

If youre trying to maximize your profits, its best to stand strong and offer a fixed price. But if you want to get it over with, then you might as well open your product to bids or negotiations. Just remember that a professionally listed product will always look more valuable to potential buyers, even if theyre bidding or bartering.

Always Buy A Fully Functional Laptop

Dont get fooled into purchasing a laptop that doesnt work on the premise that you can get it fixed. Here are some basic tests to do:

*Make sure you turn on the laptop and use it for a few minutes.

*Test all the ports and see if the optical drive is there.

*Examine if the webcam is working.

*Play some audio to test out the speakers.

*Make sure the power button works properly.

*Also check if Wi-Fi works.

*Inspect external condition for wear and tear as well as dents

If the seller has written in the description that the laptop does not work, dont go for it.

Check The Battery And The Power Adapter

You should always ask the seller about the battery health of the laptop. This is an important aspect because newer laptops do not have replaceable batteries. Just remember that replacement batteries are usually expensive or even impossible to get. Also, examine if the laptop battery charges properly and doesnt drain too quickly. Make sure the seller will be including the charger with the laptop. If not, ask him for a discount.

Research For The Right Price

Very Old HP Laptop Needs upgrading Immaculate cared for ...

Pre-owned devices can save you a lot of money, but dont be impulsive while making the purchase and do some research. Before you finalise the deal, compare the quoted price with that of a brand new laptop with similar specifications. If youre buying a used laptop over a year old for a price thats closer to the new model, the deal isnt worth it because you will end up losing on warranty. Also, make sure to compare prices for the same model from different sellers across all platforms.

Don’t Assume Refurbished Is Always Cheaper

Finally, always shop around before you buy. In this example, an Asus C101 laptop is on sale in Grade B used condition on eBay for around £220.

This might seem reasonable for a laptop that originally cost £299 new, but when we found this listing, Currys PC World had the same model on sale, brand new, for £199.

The Lighter The Better

With a few exceptions, such as lower-performing netbooks, smaller and lighter laptops are worth more than larger, heavier ones. Lighter laptops often employ expensive materials, such as titanium or magnesium, they have more advanced, lighter batteries and they might use cooler-running processors. An exception at the large end of the spectrum would be a gaming laptop which has a large screen and high-performing hardware that may demand a higher price.

Check Display And Keyboard

Inspect the screen carefully. Look for dead pixels, flickering, or spots on the screen. Open Chrome or Safari on the notebook and open YouTube to watch a video. This way you can check whether the screen is comfortable to look at, considering you probably end up staring at your laptop screen for hours at a stretch. If you find a fault in the screen, do not buy the laptop. At the same time, you should also check how well the keyboard and trackpad work. Check for broken or missing keys, type it on the keyboard just to feel it, look for key travel and response. Buy a laptop with a functional trackpad that not only has a bigger footprint but also supports gestures like pinch to zoom, two-finger scroll, etc.

What Are The Risks Of Buying A Used Laptop

The best refurbished laptops to buy

Below, we’ve highlighted some of the most common frustrations with second-hand or reconditioned laptops, so make sure you consider these before you hit the buy button.

New Windows, old machine: The great thing about Windows 10 is that it works on a wide variety of laptops. However, when installed on very old laptops it feels incredibly slow and really isnt suited to very old hardware, even if it is technically compatible. Very old business laptops will not be enjoyable to use.

Battery problems: If youre buying a used laptop, its likely the battery has been around the block a few times, and the laptop may not last for long away from the mains. If you mainly use your laptop plugged in at home, this might not be a big deal. But if battery life is something you care about, check to see whether official spares are available or, at worst, check for compatible replacements.

Charging: Probably the most abused part of any laptop is the charger and the laptops charging ports. Plugged in and unplugged every day and stuffed into bags in a hurry, these are a common point of failure. If the seller of a second-hand laptop doesnt show the state of the charging port or the charger, request images to see if it looks wonky or damaged. Spares are nearly always available, but are rarely cheap.

If You Want Money Sell It Yourself

If you want to get top dollar for an old phone or laptop, then you have to sell it yourself. That means youre going to put in some extra effort. Yes, there are sites like Gazelle that can do the work for you, but they take a fat chunk of your profits in the process.

There are a lot of places to resell your old device, but they all work the same way. You list your product with a photo, description, and price. Some of these websites allow you to make a nationwide or global listing, but most of them are focused on local listings. Generally, the websites that offer local listings are super easy to use and fulfill, but they arent always good for maximizing profits.

  • eBay Nationwide or global. Easy to use.
  • Swappa Like eBay, but easier to use.
  • Nationwide. Best for like-new products.
  • Offerup -Local

But you cant just throw up a low-effort listing for a product and expect to make a bunch of money. You need to keep your listing as clean, detailed, and professional as possible. That way, potential buyers will spend money on your old phone or laptop without a hint of hesitation or anxiety.

Think of it this way: Youre the seller, so its your job to sell your device. The buyers job is to buy, and they should fill this role as if its second nature. If a buyer has any questions or reservations about your listing, then you havent done a good job selling them your product.

How To Determine The Value Of A Laptop

Whether you are buying or selling, getting the price right on a used laptop is important if you want to keep your wallet full. New and better products are released to the computer market so regularly that computers devalue quickly, and it’s difficult to know whether an old machine is ready for the scrap heap, the donation pile, or will live up to an enticing description on Craigslist.

Write A Good Concise Description

You dont need to write an essay for your product. If anything, a short, organized description is best. That way, buyers can take the leap without becoming overwhelmed or confused. Remember, buyers shouldnt spend their time thinking they should spend their time buying.

For phones and tablets, youll generally want to list the model number, storage space, and condition. For laptops, try to include the full model number , and specs like RAM, internal storage, and processing power.

Be sure to mention any flaws, even if theyre just cosmetic. And include info about anything extra that comes with the device, like charging cables.

If youre selling a device thats broken, then take a second to consider who would buy it from you. Maybe someone will use it for parts, or maybe theyll try to fix it. You need to include additional info that might be important to these buyers. Detail if anythings missing, if the device makes any noises, or if it turns on at all.

You can add some enticing, salesman-esque details, but keep them short and sweet. As an example: This lightly used laptop is very fast, and its ready for gaming or office work.

Now, above all else, you need to follow the golden rule of resellers. Dont lie, and dont guess. If you cant find the technical details for your old electronics, then you need to admit that in the description. If youve never run a game on your old laptop, then dont say its Fortnite-ready.

What To Do Before You Sell

To get a good price, youll need to locate everything you want to sell with it such as manuals, charging cables, a laptop bag or other accessories.

You also should make a list of any damage to the machine or problems youve noticed with the laptop. And dont forget to back up and erase all the personal data from your laptop before you pass it off to someone else.

Once everything is stored, follow the system settings to reset your laptop to factory settings and list your laptop for sale with one of these top companies. Be sure to include multiple photos to help your machine sell faster.

Is It Safe To Buy A Used Laptop Or Computer

In a word, no. Though many people have found inexpensive used computers that work just fine, the world of used laptops and computers can be a difficult one to navigate. People just looking for a good deal can often be swindled out of their money.

Customers are attracted to the low initial cost of purchasing a used laptop. Often, however, savings are exaggerated. Used computer retailers will compare a product’s price with its initial sale value, not its current suggested retail price, thereby inflating the cost-effectiveness. Additionally, maintenance costs and the potential of earlier replacement often makes the actual value of buying used far smaller than retailers may have customers believe.

Used laptop retailers sometimes offer warranties that can give a false sense of security to customers. As a general rule, if the manufacturer’s warranty is no longer valid, the new warranty is probably less than reliable. Retailers who offer warranties sometimes do not have the resources or infrastructure to be able to offer the support customers need when dealing with computer problems.

Remember, it’s being sold for a reason. Sometimes, that reason can be that the old owner just wanted an upgrade, but this mentality is much rarer with computers than with cars. The computer could be slow, infected with a virus, or have damaged hardware and you might not realize this until it’s too late. Buying a used laptop or computer is a gamble when it comes to computer safety.
