Be Aware Of The Risks Before You Go

Protect Your Computer With This One Simple Trick
  • It is not a good idea to use your laptop on Boston’s public transit system . Although the transit system is generally safe, the T’s crowded buses and subways are often a haven for purse snatchers and pickpockets.
  • When flying with a laptop, it is a good idea to keep your laptop in your carry on bag, rather than in your luggage, in case your luggage gets lost. However, keep an eye on your bag at all times. Many laptops get snatched when going through security.
  • When entering the US from abroad, the border patrol agents can ask to see the contents of your laptop by order of the Transportation Security Administration and, if they deem it appropriate, can confiscate it. According to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, TSA has the right to search laptops of travelers entering the country, without warrant or probable cause. Be aware of these kinds of border laws and the laws of the countries to which you are traveling.

Tips To Protect Your Laptop From Physical Damage

April 9, 2021 by Carl VanOrden

A laptop can hold your life. If youre working from home, its essential to your income. For students, its where you keep all your notes and essays. Plus, there are the personal photos and videos. And you sometimes use it to stream your TV shows, or to video chat with friends and family. You may even make music, create art, or be writing the next bestselling novel on your laptop. So, you want to keep it in great shape. Here are five tips to protect your laptop.

#1 Dont drop it

Or throw it, or stand on it, or expect it to withstand any serious impact. OK, thats pretty obvious. You also dont want to use your laptop in the bathtub or at the pool. Even a simple water spill on a laptop can damage the circuitry. If you do get your laptop wet, immediately turn it off and unplug everything attached to it, and immediately bring it in for service.

#2 Open carefully

Laptops are getting thinner in every iteration. Some now even have foldable screens. The thinner and more flexible screen may look sleek and cool, but its also less rigid, which makes it more prone to damage. Especially on lower-cost laptops, the screen can flex if you open the computer up from just one side.

Yet, many of us hold a laptop in one hand and open the lid with the other. This can cause the screen to twist. Use both hands to open the laptop. Or get into the habit of opening your laptop from the center to avoid flex.

#3 Dont bedazzle your keyboard or screen

#5 Keep it cool

Enable ‘find My Laptop’

If the worst should happen and your laptop falls into the wrong hands, then both Windows and macOS come with tools that will let you find your computer on a map and lock it remotely. We wouldn’t recommend tracking down the person who has it without the help of the authorities, but locking your laptop or clearing it of any sensitive information is definitely a good idea.

On Windows, go to Update & Security in Settings, then choose Find my device and make sure the feature is enabled. If you and your laptop should become separated, log into your Microsoft account on the web and click Devices then Find My Device. You can’t wipe your device remotely when it comes to Windows, but you can at least lock it so that it can’t be accessed without a password.

Lock or wipe your laptop if it gets lost or stolen.

On macOS the feature is called “Find My,” but you need to make sure you’ve enrolled your Mac into the Find My service firstfrom System Preferences, choose Apple ID, then iCloud, then click Options next to Find My Mac. As long as the Find My Mac entry in the list is ticked, you’ll be able to locate your laptop.

You’ll find Find My as an app on your iPhone or iPad, if you have one, and you can also get at it though iCloud on the web. You can lock a MacBook remotely, or completely erase everything on it, or mark it as lost .

Chromebooks Vs Laptops Why They Each Require Special Protection

Consider why you chose a specific laptop or Chromebook over another version. Screen size, features, cost and ease of use likely all factored into your decision. After you purchase the ideal computer, you should maximize its safety by selecting a laptop cover that can protect your investment.

Although most manufacturers produce models that are structurally reinforced, Chromebooks can be less durable than traditional laptops. These devices offer great performance for an affordable price, but they aren’t built as tough as many other laptops. This also means that a traditional laptop case cannot offer adequate protection. Chromebooks need cases that protect the most vulnerable areas. These rugged Chromebook cases need to absorb drops, repel water and dirt and reduce pressure points to avoid cracking screens.

You need a cover that can provide maximum protection, no matter what device you have. You need a case that fits your computer and is easy to use. You need the ultimate protection only Higher Ground can deliver.

How to Protect Your Computer From Viruses and Hackers
  • Heimdal Heimdal has a very good malware scanner, and it comes with some advanced cybersecurity tools, but its much more complex to understand than other most other antiviruses, so its not the best choice for most users.
  • Webroot Webroots cloud-based malware scanner is good because it doesnt take up space or slow down a system. However, Webroot doesnt have any good internet security features, and its too expensive for an antivirus that only provides basic protection.
  • Cylance Cylance has an advanced antivirus engine. But unlike the others on this list, its missing a lot of crucial features like a desktop app, a firewall, and anti-phishing protection.

Update Your Software Regularly

Keeping Windows and all of your software up-to-date is a simple, yet vital part of protecting your computer from hackers.

The majority of updates are bug fixes and security patches that keep your operating system and software from providing a backdoor for hackers. The larger a piece of software is, the greater the likelihood that it will have vulnerabilities which a hacker can exploit.

Every time a hacker exploits a vulnerability, developers work to patch the vulnerability and update their product. Unfortunately, there are so many users on out-of-date versions of software that hackers are able to exploit the same vulnerabilities for years.

Windows 10 is designed to automatically update all you need is an internet connection. However, different programs on your computer may not be so intuitive. Antivirus suites like Norton 360 use PC vulnerability scanners to ensure that all of your software is up-to-date.

Close Your Back Door By Uninstalling Flash Asap

Adobe Flash Player used to be the most popular media player on the internet for users and hackers alike. Hackers had so much success using Flash as a backdoor into peoples systems that it needed security updates almost weekly. Nowadays, a lot of hackers use fake Flash updates to trick users into installing viruses on their computers!

HTML5 made Flash obsolete a few years ago, and Adobe announced in 2019 that it would be completely phasing out Flash in 2020. There is no longer any reason to have Flash on your computer its basically just an avenue for hackers to infiltrate your machine.

Uninstalling Flash on Windows 10 is pretty simple. While you cant uninstall Flash using the Windows Uninstall function, Adobe offers an uninstaller app for Flash on their website. Just download the app and run Adobes uninstaller to remove it from your computer.

I also recommend that you change your browser settings and disable the Flash plugin. In Chrome, do this by selecting the Privacy and Security tab in Settings, then select Site Settings. Click on the Flash option, and tell Chrome to block websites from running Flash.

A Story From The Trenches

Much of the above came to mind when a friend handed me a laptop and asked me to see if I could make it usable again. It had been part of a corporate network that they no longer had access to, so they could not sign in. They just wanted to be able to use the machine for themselves, and didnt really care about what was on it any photos could be restored from copies on their mobile phone.

I discovered the machines hard disk had been encrypted using BitLocker, and of course we did not have access to the corporate encryption key. The result? The data on the machine was completely inaccessible. I was able to back up the hard disk, but the encryption remains in place. Im not sure the backup will ever be useful, other than to restore the machine to the state it was in when I got it.

On the other hand, without needing a UEFI password, I was easily able to change the boot order and boot from a Windows 10 setup drive. This allowed me to install Windows 10 from scratch and erase everything on the drive, encrypted or not.

Mcafee Total Protection Best For Web Protections

Computer Basics: Protecting Your Computer

McAfee Total Protection has one of the fastest and most comprehensive antivirus scanners around it detected all of my malware samples during a single full system scan without slowing down my system. McAfees real-time anti-malware engine is also very effective, blocking all of the malware files and malicious scripts that I tried to launch including spyware, ransomware, rootkits, and trojans.

I also think McAfee has the best web protections around. I was impressed with McAfees anti-phishing protection, which during testing caught more fake websites than Chromes or Safaris built-in phishing protection tools did. Also, McAfees VPN was surprisingly fast, barely slowing down my internet connection while encrypting my web traffic and hiding my IP address.

McAfee Total Protection also has additional features like:

  • Firewall.
  • Wi-Fi network scanner.
  • Device encryption.

I really like McAfees web performance optimization tools that stop videos from auto-playing on websites this minimized my bandwidth usage and significantly sped up my browsing time.

And I also like McAfees device encryption, which encrypted my hard disk with unbreakable 256-bit AES encryption keeping my data safe even if someone stole my laptop and tried to access my information.

Use A Virtual Private Network

Publicly accessible networks, such as those offered in airports, conference centres and hotel rooms, present a particular security risk to laptop users. This is because hackers armed with free programs such as Cain and Abel, Wireshark or Ettercap can connect to the same networks and eavesdrop on emails or copy passwords as they pass over the network.

The best way to protect your data from interception by other network users is to encrypt it while it is in transit between your computer and your office network, using a company VPN.

If you don’t have access to a company VPN, you can use one from service provider such as StreamVia or StrongVPN. This ensures your data is encrypted and protected from other users of the public local network.
