How To Work Outdoors

How To See Your Windows PC Screen Better Under Bright Sunlight – DJ School Tips & Tricks

Laptops, tablets, and smartphones are supposed to make us mobile: Freed of cumbersome desktop technology, we can work anywhere we want. Why, then, dont you see legions of people at parks, beaches, or even sidewalk cafes typing away on their laptops? Mainly because they simply cant see their screens.

It doesnt have to be this way. A little planning and know-how can get you ahead of the game when it comes to using your gadgetry outside. Whether youre reading ebooks on your iPhone or sneaking in a few work emails while the kids build a sand castle, heres how best to set yourself up to work alongside Mother Nature.

Matte Vs Glossy Laptop Screen

Well, this may not be the most comprehensive answer to the asked question, but it surely is enough.

Despite the same LCD panels, the glossy and matte screens are remarkably different. The glossy displays rich in color and contrast, thanks to the special coating finish applied on the screen. Matte screens, in contrast, may seem dull but they are highly resistant to glare.

Now that you know the difference between the two, it is pertinent to point out that you will have to make a trade-off while preferring one screen over another.

Apart from the screen type, you are required to consider the laptop brightness. With a high brightness limit, even a glossy laptop screen can do fine in sunlight.

The other, and the most economical, solution is to find an anti-glare screen protector for laptop usage in sunlight.

Choose Your Laptop Screen

Your choice in screen can massively impact the way it reacts to sunlight. Most screens are currently glossy or matte. Glossy and matte displays use the same LCD panels, however the major difference between the behaviour of these two types of displays in sunlight is in the coating applied to the screen.

Glossy displays tend to have more vivid colours and higher contrast, which means more intense colours and deeper blacks. This makes them ideal for laptops and monitors. However this colour quality does come at a price. Glossy displays are pretty useless when a bright light shines onto them.

If you have a choice amongst laptops for working outside, look for models with a matte finish screen. Matte screens have an anti-glare coating applied to them, so theyre so much better at preventing reflection. So, obviously, this means theyre way more suited to working outside.

Using A Large Screen And High Resolution With A Laptop Makes It Even More User

The biggest merit of connecting a laptop with a stand-alone LCD is that it gives you a large screen and high resolution dual display environment. Standard laptop models usually come with a built-in 13-inch to 15-inch wide-screen LCD with a 1280 × 800 dot or 1366 × 768 dot resolution.

This level of resolution is good enough for basic Windows operations, but it goes without saying that a large, high-resolution computer screen is much more user-friendly. Combining a laptop with one of the latest wide-screen monitors enables you to easily construct a large-screen, high-resolution dual display environment. It is a real boon to dramatically boost the screen size and resolution while continuing to use your familiar laptop.

In particular, the increased vertical resolution makes applications such as web browsers and document display and editing far easier to use. For example, you can do things like check things with the web browser, refer to pdf files, organize data using word processing or presentation software, and create spread sheets and documents without having to change windows.

At the office, it is very helpful for presentations to use “clone view” for the laptop’s built-in LCD and the external LCD screen. Clone view means showing exactly the same content on two display screens. It is normally set by a graphics driver function.

Clone view displaying the same content on two screens is very effective when used in presentations

A Window is Not Visible: How to Move Off-Screen Windows Back into View

Every once-in-a-while we receive a call from a client who launched an application, but the application didnt show up on their screen. They confirmed in the taskbar that the application was running. However, the window was not visible on their screen.

If you use a secondary monitor, and/or if you operate within a remote desktop environment, you may have experienced this issue. When a secondary monitor is disconnected, or the display settings are altered, sometimes applications will still operate as if nothing had changed with the monitor or display. The window opens in an imaginary place off to the side, where that monitor used to be.

Here are simple steps to move an off-screen window back to your screen:

1. Make sure the application is selected .

2. Type and hold down ALT-SPACE, then type M.

3. Your mouse pointer will change to have 4 arrows.

4. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the window back onto your screen.

Some tips to avoid this happening in the first place: Move open windows to your primary monitor before disconnecting the secondary monitor. If shutting down, do so before disconnecting the secondary monitor. When working in a remote desktop, do not disconnect from the remote desktop using the X key at the top. Instead, close all open applications, and then go to the Start menu and select Log Out.

Perfect Visibility Even In Broad Daylight

The NuShield® DayVue Antireflective Screen Protector gives you perfect visibility by cutting down reflections and glare necessary when working outdoors in bright, sunny conditions. The colors are not compromised but the film reduces reflections from harsh light sources. The DayVue has UV protection and filters out the suns glare, so you can read the LCD display easily in outdoors.

Kathleen, a writer from Morrisville, VT, says she had to squint at her laptop when she worked on it at her back deck due to the reflection. The NuShield DayVue film solved the problem and she can now see the words on the screen rather than own face or trees behind.

How To Use A Laptop In The Sun

After the 10-foot snowbanks melted and I could actually see grass, a wonderful weather phenomena happened: warm spring sunshine.

I love the sun. So naturally, nothing seemed more tempting than grabbing my laptop and heading outside to soak up the rays with a beer so I could do some writing.

Well, I couldnt see a damned thing. The laptop was on and I was squinting away trying to see what I was doing. Fun? No. Productive? Not at all.

I turned to Twitter to ask people for solutions on how to use a laptop in the sun I mean, hey. Plenty of folk seem to live in warm, sunny places. They must have all the answers to avoid going screen-blind, right? Heres what they said:

Face the Sun. The most common suggestion to use a laptop in the sun and prevent screen blindness was to sit facing the sun. Angle the laptop and turn up the brightness for your screen display.

Look Cool. Put on a pair of shades while youre working to help cut down the glare. And sit facing the sun, of course.

Find the Shade. Sit underneath an umbrella, a parasol or a tarp, or find a shady spot where you can work. You might not have figured out how to use a laptop in the sun, but you re still outdoors and wont go blind trying to see the screen, either.

Go Traditional You can use a pen and paper. The downside is that while youll see and be able to write in the sun, youll probably get hand cramps because you havent used a pen to write with in years.

Problem : My Computer Mouse Won’t Work On The Garden Table

We expect that most remote workers will by now have given up on the trackpad built into their laptop – fine for casual work, but nothing intensive – and opted for a dedicated mouse. Indeed, search data for wired and wireless mice has gone through the roof in the past couple of weeks, and they are becoming increasingly difficult to find. If you haven’t already found one, eBuyer still has some stock with short delivery times.

So, next problem: computer mice can be very particular about which surfaces they are used on. The ideal solution is naturally a mousepad, but if you are unable to obtain one you can relatively easily fashion one yourself from any old fabric you have to hand, potentially made sturdier glued to a sheet or cardboard.

Get Hidden Windows Back With A Keyboard Trick

Theres also a simple keyboard trick you can use if you dont want to rearrange all your windows. First make sure youve got the off-screen window selected as the active window. You can do this by pressing Alt+Tab until that window is active or clicking the associated taskbar button.

After youve got the window active, Shift+right-click the taskbar button and choose the Move command from the context menu.

At this point, note that your cursor changes to a Move cursor. Now, you can use your arrow keys to move the window. You should also just be able to tap any of the arrow keys and then move your mouse slightly to have the window pop back onto the screen.

This trick will work on any version of Windows, but note that on versions before Windows 7 you just need to right-click the taskbar button instead of Shift+right-click to get the context menu. Its a handy little trick for solving an somewhat rarebut definitely frustratingproblem.

    Play With Accessibility Settings

    Rugged PC

When in direct sunlight, some phone users find it easier to read text such as emails, text messages, or ebooks when its white words on a black screen. Its worth a shot, if you havent tried it. Enter your phones Accessibility settings to reverse the text color. It might be a tab you can touch called White on Black On/Off.

There are other Accessibility settings you may want to experiment with, such as Color Tint and other visual tweaks, along with the option to have text read to you if youre having trouble reading it in the sun.

And dont forget: you can dictate messages using your voice utilizing personal assistants like Siri or Google Assistant if youre having trouble seeing the phones keyboard. Just be sure to double-check whats transcribed on the screen before you hit Send.

    Better Screens For Outside

A few factors contribute to how easy a screen is to read outside, including the type of screen it is , and how bright the backlight is .

That said, youre not likely to buy a smartphone thats better to look at outside, but some are better than others. Newer and premium devices typically have higher-quality screens and with higher brightness.

And then there are phones designed to work in harsher environments. These ruggedized phones such as the CAT S60, Sonim XP7, and Kyocera DuraForce are waterproof and drop/shock-proof, and some advertise its anti-glare screens can also be used with gloves for those who work in the field.

Outside of phones, electronic book readers with e-ink screens are far better to read outside than backlit tablets. The new Kobo Aura H20 is also waterproof, as the name suggests.

What Is The Most Practical Solution To Tackle This

It goes without saying that the most practical solution is far away from the best solution.

As pointed out by Tim MOYNIHAN, the best solution is to get a laptop with a Quantum-dot display. In his own words,

Quantum-dot displays use a wider color gamut to boost contrast, slightly curved screens that eliminate reflections from the sides, and new anti-reflective screen coatings based on the properties of a moths eyes.

The above solution is impractical as Quantum-dot Displays are expensive, and you dont have to spend a fortune just because you cant deal with the glare in sunlight.

The most practical solution is to get a laptop with a matte display, synonymous with an anti-glare display, as compared to a glossy one. Whats the difference? Lets find out.

The Two Highly Faced Problems While Using A Laptop In Sunlight:

Reflection or glare: It is basic physics. The sunlight bounces off a shiny surface due to a phenomenon called reflection. You might have heard about it in elementary school science. In layman terms, it is called glare and it really stinks.

The glare brings you unnecessary pain and might even lead to low productivity when working outside.

Low brightness: It is no secret that manufacturing companies cut corners to keep the product price low. One particular area is screen brightness.

In laptops, just like in TVs and PC monitors, screen brightness is measured in nits. A low-end laptop has a screen that could go up to 200 nits at maximum. It will perform well indoors, but simply fail to deliver when exposed to extremely bright conditions.

Apart from these two, I could not find any plausible reason that can compel users to look for a laptop that doesnt make them squint.

How To Reduce Glare On Computer Screen: Direct Sun

I have a long history of trying to figure out how to reduce glare on computer screen. For a light sensitive person, this is a difficult and complex task of cutting out glare and reflections one after another. You start with the glare that bothers you most and once you tame that one you discover another disturbing glare. So you continue until you find a tolerable solution. My intention with the next several posts is to revisit the process of reducing glare on computer screen . I hope the articles will help you find good solutions to your specific situation faster. This post is on what to do if the sun shines into your office.

Direct sun in the office has the following glare related effects:

    • if shining directly on the computer screen it makes reading impossible
    • if shining in other places in your field of vision it generates strong glare
    • if sunlight falls out of your field of vision it is likely on some surface behind you which in turn will reflect on your screen
    • as sunlight enters your office at different angles at different times it is impossible to come up with one solution for the whole day
