Disable Apps That Run On Startup

How to Speed Up HP Laptop Quickly and Easily

One of the reasons why you might be experiencing a slow Windows 10 PC is because you have many programs running in the background. This is because many installers program their apps to run immediately after you start up your computer. This can affect the speed of your computer. To disable these programs from running automatically, go to Task Manager > select the Startup tab. Go through the Startup Impact of each program. It shows you to what extent an app is slowing down your system on startup. Programs whose Startup Impact read as High are those you should mostly look out for. Disable unnecessary apps by Right-Clicking on each of them and select Disable.

Alternatively, you can go to Settings > Apps > Startup. Turn off the startup on unnecessary apps. Just make sure you dont Turn off any other crucial program required for core Windows Startup.

Add An Ssd For Faster Boot Up

Adding a secondary SSD or replacing the hard disk drive is a sure fire way to get faster boot time and quicker data access. Most laptops have an M.2 or SATA slot.

Check which kind you have before buying an SSD, as the two are not directly compatible. The steps for installing an SSD vary by model. With some laptops you remove a single screw to access an M.2 slot. In others, you remove up to 10 screws and fully pop off the bottom half of the chassis.

A run down on specific procedures can be found here.

Check the warranty information first! You may void the warranty when opening the case and replacing factory parts even if there is an open slot available for upgrades.

Turn Off Tips And Notifications

It may seem odd for a tips article to tell you to turn off Windows 10’s Tips feature, but it can reduce processing that Windows needs to do to display relevant tips for your system. The same can be said for Notifications. If Windows doesn’t need to generate a notification, your computing will go faster. I have over 40 apps that are capable of sending notifications. Simply open the Settings app’s Notifications & actions page to change the notification settings. You’ll see a list of individual apps that can send notifications, and you can uncheck those you don’t want to hear from. If you have a lot of these, too, go through the list and you’re bound to find sources from which you have no need to be notified. The distraction savings alone can speed up your PC use, if only in terms of your perception of computing speed. An easy way to pause notifications is to tap the Focus Assist button in the Action Center. This also makes it easier to re-enable them later.

Don’t Miss: How To Do A Hard Reset On Hp Laptop

Swap Out Your Hard Drive For An Ssd

If your laptop has a mechanical hard drive, then swapping it for a solid-state drive could pay dividends. As there are no moving parts, an SSD has read and write speeds far quicker than any traditional drive, as well as better reliability, and can revitalise an ailing system. If your laptop already uses an SSD, it might also be worth considering an upgrade to a faster SSD.

Over the past few years, SSD prices have gone down and capacities up, so putting one in your laptop won’t break the bank. However, as with RAM, many laptop hard drives wont be replaceable or will use specialised form-factors which prevent the use of third-party drives.

Assuming your laptop will support an upgrade, you can use a cloning tool to copy everything from your old disk to an SSD rather than reinstalling Windows from scratch. Numerous freeware tools can be used for this task, such as Todo Backup Free 9.0. Many SSD manufacturers will also include a license key for disk imaging tools with the purchase of a new drive.

1. Get rid of bloatware

Get the latest business tech news, reviews and guides delivered to your inbox.

Bloatware, crapware, unwanted software that comes with new laptops can really slow down a computer. Do you really need it? Many of these games and apps will load processes when booting and take up processor cycles and memory.

Programs such as PCDecrapifier can make the process of getting rid of bloatware really painless. It represents a quick win for those looking to speed up their notebooks.

2. Disable start-up programs

Often, when you install an application, the process also installs a number of start-up programs that run each time Windows loads. This increases boot-up times and slows down the overall running of the machine. These can be disabled or removed altogether.

To do this, open a command prompt and type in Msconfig on machines running Windows 7 or earlier. Windows 8 users onwards can locate the start-up programs list in the task manager.

On the Startup tab, look for any programs you think you dont need to use. Uncheck these items and click on Apply. If you’re not sure what a process does, simply Google it and you’ll see whether it’s essential or not. Reboot the laptop to apply these changes.

3. Switch off unnecessary animations

4. Use a Windows cleanup tool

Your first point of call when wanting to speed up a laptop is to use software that trawls through the disk drive looking for all the files and folders you never use.

Clean Out Your Registry

Under the Windows hood, the Registry tracks and controls just about everything about the way Windows works and looks. That includes information about where your programs are stored, which DLLs they use and share, what file types should be opened by which program, and just about everything else.

But the Registry is a very messy thing. When you uninstall a program, for example, that programs settings dont always get cleaned up in the Registry. So over time, it can get filled with countless outdated settings of all types. And that can lead to system slowdowns.

Dont even think of trying to clean any of this out yourself. Its impossible. To do it, you need a Registry Cleaner. There are plenty available, some free and some paid. But theres really no need to outright buy one, because the free Auslogics Registry Cleaner does a solid job.

If you want a little more multitasking performance but dont want to shell out money for an SSD, then a cheaper option is to start looking at RAM upgrades.

If youre running on a system with under 2GB of RAM, sticking an extra few gigabytes in the laptop wont cost you too much and can make all the difference. Microsoft originally stated that 2GB would work for Windows 10, but times have changed, and so has the number of processes running on any PC. Combine a RAM upgrade with an SSD, and its safe to say that your old PC or laptop wont feel quite so old anymore.

Thankfully, its simple to adjust these settings and hopefully save a little processing power. Go to Control Panel> System and Security> System> Advanced system settings. Then, in the Performance section, hit Settings and youll have a full list of options.

You can select Adjust for best performance or opt to remove some individually. Its a matter of preference, but fade and shadow features are some you could probably live without.

To add more RAM to your laptop, you need to first know about your laptop motherboard, like how much RAM and which type of RAM does it support? Then you need to identify the RAM slots available in your laptop motherboard.

For example, if your laptop has 2 RAM slots that support up to 16GB, 1600 MHz DDR3 memory, and it has 1 RAM module of 8GB 1333 MHz installed already, then you can add a second RAM module of either 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB with similar frequency to get the best performance out of your laptop.
