How to Upgrade A Laptop CPU

If youve upgraded your display to 4K to watch UHD movies and TV shows when youre not browsing the web or working, you may run into a frustrating snag: your PC simply wont do it. Your PC will not stream 4K content from YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, or other streaming providers.

All of this is because your graphics processor or card is insufficiently powerful.

Integrated graphics in AMD and Intel CPUs that are more than five years old dont support such high resolutions, and graphics cards that are more than a decade old wont achieve it either. It was just not a capability that the hardware was built to support.

Fortunately, watching 4K material on your favourite streaming services doesnt need much. The drawback is that finding a CPU upgrade that will work with your motherboard and allow 4K streaming is extremely improbable, which means youll need a new CPU, motherboard, and RAM at the very least, as well as a new power supply and cooler.

You could change your graphics card to something a couple of years newer than you have now, but you should double-check compatibility with your current motherboard first.

If you experience any of these signs, dont delay upgrading your PC.

Tdp Concerns Over The Upgrade

You need to check other factors too before upgrading and thats why we recommend that it should be done only by experienced persons.

TDP stands for Thermal Design Power and it is an indication of how much power the CPU uses and how much heat it would dissipate.

The TDP for a Core i7 is higher than that of a Core i5. For instance, the Intel Core i5-3210M has a TDP of 35W, but the Intel Core i7-3630QM has a TDP of 45W.

Hence if your laptop does not have the adequate heat dissipation capacity than installing a Core i7 on a laptop with Core i5 originally can cause heat issues.

Why Upgrade To An Ssd

The biggest difference is performance for most people between HDDs and SSD is performance. Replacing a hard drive with an SSD is one of the best things you can do to dramatically improve the performance of your older computer.

Samsung 850 SSD

Without any moving parts, SSDs operate more quietly, more efficiently, and with fewer parts to break than hard drives that have spinning platters. Read and write speeds for SSDs are much better than hard drives.

For you that means less time waiting for stuff to happen. An SSD is worth looking into if youre frequently seeing a spinning wheel cursor on your computer screen. Modern operating systems increasingly depend on virtual memory management, which pages out temporary swap files to disk. The faster your drive, the less performance impact youll experience from this overhead.

If you have just one drive in your laptop or desktop, you could replace an HDD or small SSD with a one terabyte SSD for less than $150. If youre a computer user with a great deal of data, replacing just the drive that holds your operating system and applications could provide a significant speed boost. Put your working data on additional internal or external hard drives, and youre ready to tackle a mountain of photos, videos, or supersized databases. Just be sure to implement a backup plan to make sure you keep a copy of that data safe on additional local drives, network-attached drives, or the cloud.

What Does Upgrading Ram Do

Ask LH: How Do I Know When To Upgrade My PC Or Just Build ...

Upgrading RAM gives your computer the critical resources it needs to temporarily shuffle data from the hard disk to the CPU to process it. Even the fastest solid-state drives are sluggish compared to how quickly RAM can get your computer the information it needs. Without RAM or without sufficient RAM for whatever it is youre doing your computer would become unbearably slow or not even work at all.

Generally, people add more RAM in order to:

How To Find Compatible Parts

Now you know the basic hardware that brings a new life to your laptop, then you need to know exactly what to buy. For example, laptop RAM and desktop RAM are not the same. If your laptop is old, it might use older DDR2 RAM instead of DDR3 or DDR4 RAM.

There are some guides on the Internet to find out compatible parts for your notebook when you want to purchase RAM and SSD. All you need to do is choose your laptop manufacturer and model. And a list of compatible RAM and SSDs will be given to you.

You can also find out how many DIMMexpansion slots the laptop has and how much memory it can support, in addition to the specifications for the acceptable RAM or SSD.

Then you can use the specifications to search for similar memory or storage on Amazon or other sites. It will be compatible with your laptop if it matches the specs.

How To Update Computer Drivers

Generally, when we install Windows updates, device drivers are updated. But theres no guarantee that the latest driver update will be installed, or all drivers will be updated. Due to this, sometimes the hardware isnt automatically detected, and you end up encountering Blue Screen of Death and other errors. This makes updating drivers essential.

See How Much Free Storage You Have

If your laptop’s hard drive is running low on free space, it can certainly grind things to a halt and make programs open more slowly or files take forever to save. So be sure to check your available hard drive space just to be sure.

If you need to move some large files off of your hard drive to quickly free up space to see if that helps the overall performance, use a free disk space analyzer tool to see where all the used space is going.

Whether Your Laptop Can Be Upgraded

Upgrading a laptop

Compared to a desktop, several parts of a laptop cannot be removed because they are soldered together. Thus, you cant upgrade everything on your laptop. Firstly, before upgrading laptop hardware, you need to know whether your laptop can be upgraded or if there are soldered components.

How to find which parts can be upgraded? You can read the manufactures manual first. If there is no manufacturers manual, then you can try a system scanner. Run it on a Windows laptop or Macbook and it will scan your machine to find out the parts that can be upgraded in your laptop.

Or you can search for the method on the Internet by inputting “How to upgrade RAM in XYZ” in Google. XYZ means the exact model of your laptop. If you see a correct guide, go ahead. If you don’t, it’s best to skip the upgrade.

Upgrading Your Optical Drive

While you can replace your optical drive, it’s likely going to be a hassle. Firstly, you’ll have to free the drive bay from the chassis, which will be an adventure. Then you’ll need to find an optical drive that has the same dimensions as your existing one, of which you may have varying luck, depending on the size and age of your laptop. When you’re done, you’ll need to swap the fascia from your existing drive on to your new one, so that things sit flush with your chassis.

It’s honestly easier to get yourself an external USB DVD& plusm RW drive, which will run you somewhere between AU$60 and AU$80. If you want Blu-ray, you’ll be paying around AU$180.

Add An Internal Hard Drive

As weve discussed, freeing up space on your hard drive is great for your computers healthbut an external hard drive isnt the only solution. If youd like to avoid adding another gadget to your life and you have some DIY expertise, you can install a second internal hard drive inside your computer. This is a more technical and time-consuming process, but it creates a more streamlined look.

Before you dive in, be aware of a couple caveats. First, any time youre messing around with your hardware, you need to safely back up your data before you start. Next, this process wont work on all computers. Youll need a device with a second drive bay, so that rules out laptops and all-in-one machines like Apples iMacs. If do you own that type of computer, you might be able to replace the original hard drive with a more capacious onebut that process is much more difficult and beyond the scope of this storys focus on easy upgrades. Finally, you dont need to be an expert to add a second hard drive, but you should be comfortable with a screwdriver.

Not able to update my laptop

This is a general guide for laptops produced from the early 2010s onwardthat is, in the last decade. It won’t cover every configuration, but it should get pretty close. You will definitely run across exceptions, though.

Early Microsoft Surface Laptop models and their fabric-coated keyboard decks, for example, are largely glued together and near-impossible to open without damage. Or, a different limitation: Some Apple MacBooks use soldered-down instead of removable components.

The bottom cover off, how it looks inside an older gaming laptop.

That said, on average, the following components are usually upgradable in a typical business or consumer laptop:

    • The processor

    • The graphics chip

Each component above has its own section in this guide, in which we’ll explain how to identify whether it’s upgradable in your laptop.

This guide doesn’t discuss laptop components that are often proprietary or too specific for us to offer general advice about, such as the display, the keyboard, and the touchpad. Replacing those is sometimes possible, depending on the model and availability of parts. But in almost all cases, they would fall under the category of a repair rather than an upgrade.

How Do I Enable Secure Boot

Any computer made since Windows 8 was released in 2012 ought to support Secure Boot, which helps prevent unsigned and potentially malicious software from being loaded during your PCs boot process. You should be able to turn it on in your PCs BIOS if it isnt already enabled, usually either in a Security or Boot section. As with enabling your TPM, if you cant find the setting, check your PC’s or motherboards manual.

If your computer wont boot after you enable Secure Boot, dont worryyou just need to go through a couple of additional steps. Failure to boot is most likely because your hard drive or SSD is set up with an MBR partition table rather than the newer GPT format that Secure Boot and UEFI both require.

To check, right-click the Start button or use the Windows + X keyboard shortcut and then click Disk Management in the menu that pops up. Right-click whatever drive that Windows is installed on , then click Properties, then check the Volumes tab. If your partition style is listed as MBR, that’s when you’ll need to convert the drive.

To convert from MBR to GPT in Windows 10:

If this conversion fails for some reason, the easiest option may be to do a clean reinstall of Windows 10 or 11 with Secure Boot enabled. When you format the drive and install Windows from a bootable USB stick, it will use GPT instead of MBR.

A Guide To Upgrading Your Pc

If your computer is sluggish to start up and slow to move between applications, a PC upgrade might be in order.

For a hardware upgrade to be effective, consider the age and condition of your computer. If your system is more than five years old, it will be hard to find compatible parts. You will be better off buying a new computer.

How To Migrate To An Ssd

Buying a replacement SSD is the first step. Moving your data onto the SSD is the next step. To that end, you need two things: cloning software and an external drive case or drive sled or enclosure, which lets you connect the SSD to your computer through its USB port or another data transfer interface. The videos I pointed you to in the previous section go into some detail there.

Cloning software makes a bit-for-bit copy of your internal hard drives data. Once the data is transferred to the SSD, transplant the new drive into your computer and you should be good to go. I prefer to clone a hard drive onto an SSD whenever possible. If its done right, a cloned SSD is bootable, so its literally a plug-and-play experience. Just copying files between the two drives instead may not copy all the data you need to get the computer to boot with the new drive.

A new SSD, or even a new hard drive, is unlikely to come pre-populated with the operating system your computer needs. Cloning your existing hard drive fixes that. That may not be possible all the time, however. For example, maybe youve installed the SSD in a computer that previously had a bad hard drive. If so, you can do whats called a clean install and start fresh. Each OS maker has different instructions. Heres a link to Microsofts clean install procedure, and Apples Mac clean install instructions.
