Talk To And Listen To Your Mac
Way back before macOS Sierra launched in 2016, the Macs ability to listen to you and talk back was already impressive through Dictation. However, thats been completely topped by Siris arrival on Apples Mac lineup.
You can either hold down Command and Space for a couple seconds, or simply click the Siri button on your Dock or Menu Bar, and summon the same Siri youve grown accustomed to on your iPhone. And, if you have a newer Mac, like the 2018 MacBook Pro, you can just say Hey Siri. And, as a bonus, this version of Siri is much more useful.
Beyond the questions you may usually ask, like the weather or whos playing in the playoff game, Siri on macOS Mojave and Catalina can toggle system functions like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, or even pull up individual files stored on the system, based on what you tell Siri about the file. Siri can even launch apps for you.
Just press Command+Space and get to asking.
Share A Printer With Other Macs
Network printers are massively useful, letting anyone on your network print wirelessly, but if you’ve got a great printer already connected to one Mac and don’t want to replace it, you can still get the same convenience. Go to System Preferences > Sharing and check the Printer Sharing service.
This will bring up a screen where you can select the printer to share, and specify who can use it, if necessary. Once this is set up, any Mac on the network can access that printer from the print dialogue, though the Mac the printer is connected to must be turned on.

Where Can I Find All My Apps
Talking about apps, lets end this article by showing you where you can find the apps in your MacBook Pro. The long way is to launch the Finder and go to Applications.
But if you want a faster way, just click on the grey icon with the rocket in the dock. That should bring up Launch Pad. Scroll sideways by swiping two fingers horizontally on your trackpad and tap an icon to select an app.
You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to LaunchPad by going to System PreferencesKeyboardShortcutsLaunchPad & Dock. Another good option to access your apps quickly is to go to Finder and drag the entire Applications folder to your dock.
When you click on that icon now, it will load up all your apps directly from the dock.

You Should Get The Macbook Pro 13
You want more power than the Air without paying a fortune
The latest 13-inch MacBook Pro has the same processor as the Air but with an additional graphics processing unit core that gives it a bit more muscle for visually intensive tasks. It also has a fan built in, meaning it can let the processor work a little harder when the laptop is being pushed to the max during a heavy video export or big 3D render.
Theres definitely a difference between the two in our testing, the Pro rendered 8K video files minutes faster than the Air, and we saw notably higher graphics scores on our benchmarks. We also got a couple extra hours of battery life out of the Pro, which clocked in at 16 hours and 30 minutes compared to about 14 hours on the Air. This makes the 13-inch model a nice middle ground in the current Mac lineup, as youll get more power and endurance than the Air for a pretty reasonable starting price of $1,299.

You want a MacBook Pro without a notch
The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros feature bigger and sharper screens with thinner bezels, but that all comes at the expense of a notch where the webcam sits. This wont necessarily be a deal breaker for everybody, but if you want a MacBook Pro with a more even screen, the 13-inch is your best bet. And while it doesnt have the more advanced Liquid Retina XDR display of its pricier siblings, the 13-inch MacBook Pros 2560 x 1600 screen was still a beauty to look at in our testing.

Use A Docking Station
Today’s MacBooks don’t come with display or video ports, but instead rely on Thunderbolt 3 connectors, with either one or two on each side. The older 12in MacBook had just one USB-C port for charging and adding other devices.
A Thunderbolt 3 docking station lets you connect your MacBook via one cable to the dock that will have multiple ports, including one or more HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA ports. It will also boast extra USB ports, and maybe a Gigabit Ethernet port for wired Internet access and other useful connectors.
Thunderbolt 3 laptops can also use slower but often cheaper USB-C docks, but not the other way round unless the dock uses a Titan Ridge chipset. For more details see our list of the Best USB C and Thunderbolt 3 docks, as well as the best USB-C hubs.
Best Pc Laptop: Microsoft Surface Pro 3
Microsoft was late to the hardware game, but the Surface 3 proves just how much ground its made up over the last three years with a laptop thats easy to use and easy to love.
The laptop has a quad-core Intel i5 processor, 8GB of memory, 256GB of storage, and a high-resolution 13.5-inch touch screen. It has a 720P HD webcam, which can be used with Microsofts Windows Hello feature to scan your face and unlock your machine. Surprisingly, the Surface Laptop 3 supports WiFi 6, the latest version of the wireless standard that allows you to use the internet a lot more quickly if you have the right router.
This machine sports one USB-C port, one USB-A port, and Microsoft Surface Connect port, so you can plug in a wide range of accessories without needing an adapter. Speaking of accessories, you may want to get a Surface Pen, Microsofts stylus, if you intend to use the Surface Laptop 3s screen as a drawing tablet.
Microsofts Surface 3 Laptop weighs 2.8 pounds, and is .57 inches thick all the way across, so its also very backpack-friendly. Like the MacBook Air, its only real technical downside is its integrated graphics chip, which matters more here because Windows is the dominant PC gaming platform. That aside, the Surface Laptop 3 is an excellent portable PC for anyone who enjoys a clean-looking, fast machine that runs Windows.

Plug In More Devices Using Thunderbolt
So far, weve been focusing on stuff you see on the screen. Lets move someplace else on your MacBook Pros unibody. Look at the side, particularly that peculiarly-shaped power jack. Apple didnt shape that jack to simply look like the Thunderbolt port beside it. IT IS a Thunderbolt port. Both ports are exactly the same.
So, you can actually charge your laptop through either of those ports and you can plug in any compatible device into either one.
Having a Thunderbolt port as a power jack can come in handy, especially if youre using the smaller 13-inch MacBook Pro, which only comes with 2 Thunderbolt ports. For example, lets say you want to record audio through an external mic AND still have an external monitor for viewing say your script while ALSO using the main screen to display an application.
To do this on a 13-inch MacBook Pro, you can temporarily detach your power cord, plug one of the devices in its stead and then plug the other device in the other port. MacBook Pros have extensive battery life, so you can accomplish a lot of work even with the MBP unplugged.

How To Use Your Macbook As A Desktop
While there will always be customers who need the sort of power that only a workstation or gaming PC can provide, most of us are content with our laptops and MacBooks sometimes, however, we can all get envious of those big, beautiful displays. Heres how to get the most out of using your MacBook as a desktop.
These days, even a midrange laptop is more powerful than a high-end desktop was just a few short years ago, and the needs of most people havent changed much in that time. As a result, unless you know you need a desktop, your current MacBook is probably more than enough for most of your needs .
Which Port Has My Mac Got
As we said above, the hardest part of connecting a display to your Mac is working out what cable you need to plug into your Mac and the monitor.
The adapter you require depends on the model of Mac and the type of monitor. Apple has implemented quite a few different port types over the years, and your Mac desktop or MacBook might feature any of the following:

Software And Operating Systems
The macOS operating system has been pre-installed on all MacBook Pro computers since release, starting with version 10.4.4 . Along with OS X, iLife has also shipped with all systems, beginning with iLife ’06.
The Intel-based MacBook Pro comes with the successor to BIOS, Extensible Firmware Interface 1.1. EFI handles booting differently from BIOS-based computers, but provides backwards compatibility, allowing dual- and triple-boot configurations. In addition to OS X, the Microsoft Windows operating system is installable on Intel x86-based Apple computers. Officially, this is limited to 32-bit versions of Windows XP, Vista, and 7, and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 with the necessary hardware drivers included with the Boot Camp software. Other x86 operating systems such as Linux are also unofficially supported. This is made possible by the presence of the Intel architecture as provided by the CPU and the BIOS emulation Apple has provided on top of EFI.
macOS Big Sur, the seventeenth major release of macOS, will work with Wi-Fi and graphics acceleration on unsupported MacBook Pro computers with a compatible patch utility.
Are Macbooks Really Worth It
That entirely depends on your needs and wants from a portable computer and whether you’re willing to pay Apple’s asking price. If you’re already familiar with macOS or even Apple’s mobile operating system, it makes a lot of sense to use a computer that’s well connected with those interfaces. You’ll get the most out of every device involved this way, even your MacBook. That level of synchronization is worth it to me as well as numerous others.

Is A Mac Or Pc Laptop Better
While the differences between Macs and PCs have waned over the years, both platforms are very strong. Youll be able to accomplish the same sets of tasks: Writing, creating spreadsheets or slideshow, photo, video, or image editing, and streaming videos without facing a lot of performance hitches.
If you prefer Apples tech, and dont mind accepting that youll have fewer hardware choices, youre better of getting a Mac. If youd like more hardware choices, and want a platform thats better for gaming, you should get a PC.
Mini Displayport To Dvi
Apple’s Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter can be used to connect a Mac with Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt ports to an external display or projector that uses DVI.
Mini DisplayPort features on most Macs and is used to connect to an external display. Using an adapter you will be able to use it to connect your Mac to a DVI or VGA display.
This is for displays that do not support Dual-link DVI resolutions . DVI will support HDCP content.
It costs £29/$29 and can be purchased here.
Wondering what the difference is between single-link DVI and dual-link DVI? Dual-link is for DVI displays with resolutions above 1920 x 1200. When you use the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter , your Mac will need a free USB port.
If your display operates at 1920 x 1200 or lower you should use the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter instead. It costs £29/$29 from Apple and you can purchase it here.

Its important to make sure your Mac is powerful enough to drive any external displays at the resolution and refresh rate you need. One easy way to do this is to check the technical specifications of your particular model. To find your model, click the Apple logo in the top-right corner of the screen and choose About This Mac.
Search for your exact model on Apples website , and then click Support to reveal the technical specifications sheet. Under Graphics and Video Support , you should see something like, Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display, and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on up to two external displays.
