Why You Dont Need Vpn At Home

When you log onto the internet from home, you are typically doing so through your private, secured Wi-Fi. Your private Wi-Fi network should have a password, which keeps outsiders from seeing your internet activity. And you get this protection without having to take that extra step of first logging into a VPN service before accessing the web.

This only works, though, if your home Wi-Fi is protected by a complex and unique password. Your internet service provider, or ISP, probably required that you choose a password when setting up service. Make sure that password is a strong one so others cant guess it.

Worth noting: Most Wi-Fi routers come with default passwords, and those passwords can often be easily found online, so it is wise to change your default password to something unique and complex.

Another issue related to using a VPN at home? Your online browsing could become more frustrating. Because you first connect to another outside server when using a VPN, your browsing speed could slow.

There are exceptions where you might consider using a VPN at home. You might want to use a VPN if youre worried about your ISP tracking your online activity. If you connect to the internet through a VPN, the provider of your internet services wont be able to see what youre doing online.

However, the company that provides your VPN service will. If you trust that company more than your internet service provider, then using VPN at home might make sense.

Even so, heres how it would work.

What A Vpn Does And Does Not Do

As with any security tool, it’s important to understand the limitations of a VPN. After all, you wouldn’t expect a Kevlar vest to save you from falling out of an airplane or a parachute to stop a bullet.

When you switch on a VPN, your traffic is routed through an encrypted tunnel to a server operated by the VPN company. That means that your ISP and anything connected to your router won’t be able to see your web traffic. From the VPN’s server, your traffic exits onto the public internet.

Because your traffic appears to come from the VPN’s server, your actual IP address is effectively hidden. That’s important, because IP addresses are distributed geographically and can be used to find your rough location. This can come in handy if you want to spoof your location. By connecting to a VPN server in London, you can make it appear as if you were accessing the internet from the UK.

    Vpns Aren’t Rocket Science

Too many of you aren’t using a VPN, and maybe that’s because they seem like arcane security tools. Fortunately, many providers have worked hard to make them friendly and easy to use. Most are now set-and-forget security tools, as they should be. A VPN is one of the best and easiest ways to guard your web traffic from, well, just about everyone.

Which Vpn Providers Support Windows Xp

Its been almost 20 years since Windows XP was introduced, and while it has been largely phased out there are still people who rely on this iconic legacy operating system.

For the best protection you should upgrade to a newer operating system while Windows XP receives very occasional updates for serious problems, it officially stopped receiving support from Microsoft over five years ago.

Upgrading from XP to Windows 10 is free and, from a security perspective, absolutely vital. Even if youre running a VPN on Windows XP you will not be as secure as when using a newer operating system.

Still, if for any reason you have to use Windows XP it is possible to use a VPN. Weve done our best to draw up a list of the top VPN providers who do and dont support Windows XP in 2021.

These VPN providers maintain apps and support for Windows XP:

    • Windscribe
  • In your web browser, log into your ExpressVPN account

    Enable The Kill Switch

Many VPN services have a kill switch that will terminate your connection to protect your privacy if the VPN connection stops unexpectedly. Often you have to go into the app settings to enable this, as it’s not turned on by default. It may not be available on all devices, either.

There’s a good reason why kill switches aren’t on by default. In Nord’s case, as with lots of other services, you won’t be able to access the internet unless the VPN is connected.

If available, you might prefer to use the ‘App Kill Switch’ option which Nord offers. This lets you pick which apps should have their internet connections cut off if the VPN stops working, and leaves all others working as normal.

In other VPNs, a similar feature is called split-tunneling and it means you can choose which apps use the VPN connection and all others use the normal connection.

There are other options, but that’s really all you need to do to: using a VPN is very easy.

The only other setting that could be useful is to make the VPN connect automatically your laptop or phone connects to an unsafe Wi-Fi network. This ensures you don’t forget to use the service.

What Should A Good Vpn Do

You should rely on your VPN to perform one or more tasks. The VPN itself should also be protected against compromise. These are the features you should expect from a comprehensive VPN solution:

    • Encryption of your IP address: The primary job of a VPN is to hide your IP address from your ISP and other third parties. This allows you to send and receive information online without the risk of anyone but you and the VPN provider seeing it.
    • Encryption of protocols: A VPN should also prevent you from leaving traces, for example, in the form of your internet history, search history and cookies. The encryption of cookies is especially important because it prevents third parties from gaining access to confidential information such as personal data, financial information and other content on websites.
    • Kill switch: If your VPN connection is suddenly interrupted, your secure connection will also be interrupted. A good VPN can detect this sudden downtime and terminate preselected programs, reducing the likelihood that data is compromised.
    • Two-factor authentication: By using a variety of authentication methods, a strong VPN checks everyone who tries to log in. For example, you might be prompted to enter a password, after which a code is sent to your mobile device. This makes it difficult for uninvited third parties to access your secure connection.
