Hp Pavilion 1: Design

HP Pavilion Gaming 15 Review

The Ultrabook category is a tough one to define. If you take the word to mean ‘any laptop with the appearance of being slim’ then this absolutely slots in there. The HP Pavilion 15- looks absolutely fantastic for its price point, with HP trimming things back a long way.

The screen, for example, is plenty thin and far stiffer than we’d typically expect for a plastic-cased laptop. It’s clearly well-braced inside, because it doesn’t have the benefit of a glass front to offer it extra rigidity.

This does make using the touchscreen a little sticker than the same experience on a glass panel, but that’s a simple concession that is easily made to hit a price point. The base is similarly svelte-looking, with clever angles used to hide its slightly bulbous belly.

Which does bring us to the other potential meaning of the word Ultrabook, which we’d say was ‘any thin and light laptop’ – emphasis on the actual thinness and lightness, rather than the implied. It’s close, but the HP Pavilion 15 doesn’t really qualify. Sure, we’ve seen bulkier machines out there, and we’ve seen heavier, but the 15-eh0014na does not slot into either niche exactly. It’s not a one-hander like the LG Gram, nor is it sliver-thin like the MacBook Air. It’s subtly dense in its own special way.

Hp Pavilion 1: Price And Availability

Here is the HP Pavilion 15-eh0014na configuration sent to TechRadar for review:CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 4700U Graphics: AMD Radeon Graphics RAM: 16GB DDR4 Screen: 15.6-inch, 1920 x 1080 IPS with touch screenStorage: 512GB SSDPorts: 1 x USB Type-C , 2x USB Type-A , 1x HDMI 2.0, 1x combo jackConnectivity: Realtek RTL8822CE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 comboCamera: HP Wide Vision 720p cameraWeight: 3.9 pounds Size: 14.17 x 9.2 x 0.7 inches

The HP Pavilion 15-eh0014na reviewed here – known also as the eh0015cl – is the big brother of the HP Pavilion 15 family, and as such commands one of the highest prices of HP’s mid-range line. That’s not to say it’s supremely expensive in the US it can be found for $849.99, while HP’s UK store stocks it for £850. In Australia you’ll need to settle for the eh0065AU, which omits the touchscreen found here and switches out the 512GB SSD for a 1TB version it’s slightly more eye-watering at AU$2,199, too.

Dial things down in the Pavilion line and you can cut that price significantly when you’re going for a mid-range machine, cutting down things like storage space makes sense, and you may be able to get away with 8GB RAM – though we’d certainly recommend sticking to 16GB if you can afford it.

Case A Sideways Step In Quality

When compared to the older 2019 design, the 2021 model has narrower top and bottom bezels for a smaller footprint while using the same metal and plastic materials. The speaker grilles along the top of the keyboard are now gone for a more simplistic appearance. It’s a basic matte impression with none of the flashy chrome-cut trims or sharp MacBook-like edges of the Spectre or Envy, respectively. Whether it looks any better than a competing Asus VivoBook or Lenovo IdeaPad is up to user preference.

Chassis rigidity is weak around the lid and front corners of the base where the system is most susceptible to twisting. It’s only a bit better than the aforementioned VivoBook or IdeaPad but not enough to really make a difference in the long term.

As a budget laptop, the Pavilion 15 isn’t trying to be the thinnest or lightest in its category it just needs to be “good enough” against the competition. Size and weight are therefore very similar to the budget 15.6-inch laptops from other OEMs including the Asus VivoBook S15 or Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15. Moving up to the sleeker HP Envy 15 or Spectre x360 15 will actually be even heavier since those systems have stronger metal frames instead of plastic.

Hp Pavilion 15 Keyboard How Easy Is The Hp Pavilion 15 To Type On

HP 15.6" Gaming Pavilion 15

The HP Pavilion 15 is very easy to type on. The keys have a good amount of travel not Lenovo ThinkPad T490 good but still deeper and nicer-feeling than most laptops and gentle underlighting means you can work away late at night with ease.

The keycaps feel similar to those of the HP Envy 13, but because the HP Pavilion 15 is bigger, theres room for a number pad here. This makes up for the arrow keys being small and hemmed in, and you could just use number lock and have the 2, 4, 8, and 6 keys double as arrow keys problem solved.

Despite these layout gripes, the Pavilion 15s keyboard is solid. Key action is nice and snappy, with little in the way of wobble from the letter keys. Shift, Caps Lock, Enter and Space Bar the usual suspects are all a little more on the wobbly side, but nothing here gives me immediate cause for concern. Everything feels sturdy and durable.

The trackpad was less easy to use out of the box, requiring me to whack the sensitivity level all the way up in order to be able to use this with any ease. After reviewing the Asus ZenBook 14, which features the slickest trackpad Ive used in recent months, I think that all other laptop trackpads are ruined for me.

The keyboard layout here is generally good, though having the nav keys squashed in above the number pad is not ideal

Display Sharp But Not Bright

The display is both good and disappointing. It’s good in that contrast ratio is relatively high for a budget laptop at over 1000:1 and that images are sharp because to the glossy overlay. Response times are also decent for reduced ghosting when playing games. Unfortunately, the disappointingly dim backlight and limited colors prevent the display from being outstanding in all aspects. Expect some glare even when indoors.

What Is The Hp Pavilion 15

The HP Pavilion 15 is an affordable laptop that undercuts the majority of the competition, making it an ideal option for students and office workers to consider.

In the review unit Ive been sent the HP Pavilion 15-cs1506sa theres an Intel Core i7-8565U processor sitting under the hood, next to a Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti GPU. This means on paper you should have enough processing power to blast through basic PC tasks and enough GPU grunt to get in a bit of Fortnite, Overwatch and the like on the side just dont expect to to run these at a high clip with texture packs and settings cranked all the way up. There might be a dedicated graphics card here, but a high-end gaming laptop the HP Pavilion 15 is not.

That said, the price here is quite attractive £850 at the time of writing and means it competes directly with the likes of the Acer Nitro 5, which occupies the same price bracket but features more modern 16 Series cards, the Razer Blade Stealth and not to mention HPs own Envy 13.

Should I Buy The Hp Pavilion 15

Given that you can get the Dell XPS 13 and the HP Envy 13 for not much more money right now, I would advise against buying an HP Pavilion 15, unless youre able to pick one up in a Black Friday sale with a tidy discount.

Considering that it costs £850, and that well be seeing laptops like the Acer Swift 5 featuring next generation Intel Ice Lake laptop processors going on sale very soon for about the same money, it is hard to justify dropping the better part of a grand on this right now.

Theres nothing terribly wrong with the HP Pavilion 15, but its coming to market with an outdated GPU, a not-terribly-good display and a price that very soon wont be that competitive.

Your options are to either wait for the price to fall or pick up an alternative: if you want a cheap laptop for under £1000 to do basic PC work, pick up the HP Envy 13 instead. Its smaller, but the overall experience is far better.

If you want a cheap laptop for light gaming, get an Acer Nitro 5, which is similarly priced and comes with 16 Series Nvidia graphics options instead of 10 Series. If you want something which straddles both camps, consider a Dell XPS 13 or a Razer Blade Stealth 13 .

Hp Pavilion 15 Battery Performance Will The Hp Pavilion 15 Run All Day Long

Broadly speaking, yes. In my experience, Ive been able to get close to eight hours out of the HP Pavilion 15 off the mains, with the displays brightness locked at 150 nits.

HPs official spec sheet says youll be able to get over 16 hours on this, but in my experience that figure only makes sense if youre really not doing much on the laptop. If youre working writing, cropping photos, sending and replying to several emails, all with music pumping in the background you will be able to comfortably cruise through a working day without having to worry too much about reaching for the charger.

That said, running PC Mark 8s Work benchmark, with the brightness pinned to 150 nits until the battery hit critical levels, gave me a result of three hours and three minutes, which is far below what Ive observed in day-to-day use. Im not sure why such an atypical result was returned, given that most Whiskey Lake laptops Ive tested will give you something between eight to 11 hours off a single charge. The presence of a dedicated graphics processor is a factor you can always manually disable this via the Nvidia Control Panel if you need to switch to the CPUs integrated graphics.

Luckily, you can get the HP Pavilion 15s 68 Wh li-ion battery topped back up to 100% in just over two hours. After half an hour of charging, expect to get 40% in the tank, and 69% after one hour.

Hp Pavilion 15 Gaming How Well Does It Run Fortnite And Apex Legends

Using FRAPS to measure game performance, I recorded average frame rates of around 30-40fps and 70-100fps on Fortnite with the graphics settings on Epic and Low respectively, and 20-30fps and 50-60fps on Apex Legends, with textures and shadows dialled all the way up, and all the way down.

While the 60Hz display means you wont be able to appreciate the higher frame rates you can achieve on the HP Pavilion 15, you could always hook this up to a Full HD gaming monitor. HDMI 1.4 is old hat its all about HDMI 2.1 these days but it still supports 1080p video at 144Hz. So, if you are in the market for something to play battle royale shooters on, and you already own or are thinking about getting a cheap Full HD monitor anyway, you at least have the option of that as a workaround.

Dont expect AAA titles like Control or The Division 2 to run well on this, though. I ran the in-game benchmark on Dirt Rally a game from 2015 we still use in reviews to see how systems handle older games and on Ultra settings, I got an average frames per second count of 44.95. I was only able to comfortably clear 60fps here when I dipped the graphics settings down to Medium, where the HP Pavilion 15 gave me 77.92fps on average, and a maximum fps count of 110.24.

You will want to pick up a gaming mouse though, because when it comes to tense firefights, that trackpad is not your friend.

Hp Pavilion 15 Display Can I Use The Hp Pavilion 15 For Photo Editing

The HP Pavilion 15s display is not well suited to photo editing. Low maximum brightness and poor colour gamut coverage mean that I wouldnt recommend this even for the most basic of photo work or digital art. Even if all youre doing is resizing your holiday snaps, if youre after a laptop for any kind of photo work, youd be better off picking up something like the HP Envy 13 or the Razer Blade Stealth 13 .

I recorded a maximum brightness of 223.55 nits using an X-Rite i1Display Pro colorimeter and DisplayCAL 3. Thats a poor score and explained why websites, photos, and games looked a little dull and washed out. If a laptop cant give you at least 300 nits of maximum brightness in 2019, you should reconsider it.

That said, a low black level of 0.15 nits means that contrast is high I recorded an acceptable contrast ratio of 1432:1, and while things were a little on the dull side, nothing looked excessively murky or washed out.

Colour gamut coverage was poor, however, with just 61.7% of the sRGB space covered. As the name suggests, sRGB is the standard colour space used by developers, website designers and digital artists, and as such is a good indicator of how vivid and vibrant websites, webcomics, or video game visuals will look on a display. Ideally, a display will give you 100% sRGB coverage but, in reality, any laptop display which covers 80% or above is good.

Connectivity No More Rj

HP Pavilion 15

Port options are decent for the size. We’re surprised to see HDMI 2.0 instead of 1.4 meaning the system properly supports external monitors of up to 4K at 60 FPS. There is no Thunderbolt support, however, as HP wants users to upgrade to the costlier Envy or Spectre series instead.

DisplayPort via USB-C appears to be broken on our unit as shown here. The image on the external monitor would twitch and display incorrectly no matter the settings. We even tried different monitors and laptops, but the results wouldn’t change. This seems to be limited to the USB-C port as video-out via HDMI would work without any issues.

Power Consumption More Demanding Than Iris Xe

Idling on desktop at the lowest brightness setting consumes just 4.9 W while the maximum brightness setting demands about 3 W more. Enabling the discrete Nvidia GPU via Optimus would increase system draw to 14 W to be several watts more than other Tiger Lake-U laptops without the same GPU option. It’s recommended to run the integrated Intel GPU if the extra horsepower from the MX450 isn’t needed.

Gaming demands between 55 W and 65 W from the small 65 W AC adapter. The included adapter is therefore just barely sufficient for running the laptop at its peak and so we would have been more comfortable with a larger 80 W AC adapter instead. Expect the Pavilion 15 to charge more slowly if gaming or running other high loads.

Hp Pavilion 15 Laptop Review: 11th Gen Intel And Geforce Mx450 Combo

Do Iris Xe and GeForce MX make a good team?

It’s been two years since we last reviewed a standard HP Pavilion 15 and a lot has changed since then. HP has updated the chassis design as well as the 8th gen Whiskey Lake-U CPU and GeForce MX250 GPU to 11th gen Tiger Lake-U and the MX450, respectively. The Pavilion name carries some of HP’s most affordable laptops in contrast to the higher-end Envy series and flagship Spectre series.

The system we’re looking at today has been fully configured with the Core i7-1165G7 CPU, 16 GB of RAM, 1 TB PCIe SSD, and dedicated Nvidia graphics for about $1100 USD. Its specifications are therefore higher than your typical budget Ultrabook especially in terms of graphics as many in this category have no Nvidia options at all.

Competitors to the Pavilion 15 include other entry-level 15.6-inch multimedia laptops like the Dell Inspiron 15 5502, Lenovo IdeaPad 5 15, Honor MagicBook 15, or Asus VivoBook S15 S533EQ.
