Dell Inspiron 13 7000 (7306) 2-in-1 Review (i7-1165G7, Intel Iris Xe, 13.3″ 4K)

As it is our first look at this processor we were pretty eager for this test. At first, we were very impressed by the 3.25 GHz the processor run at the beginning. However, shortly after the start, the frequencies plummeted down to 2.04 GHz, obviously because of reaching temperature thresholds. Thus, the temperature dropped from 90C on average for the first period, to 77C for the second. Interestingly, our measures at the end of the test showed even lower temperature 75C and slightly higher clock speeds 2.10 GHz. Sadly, this is still lower than what most devices with the older Core i5-8250U do.

When you look at the cooling system of this device you can easily draw conclusions about the end results of this test. Small heat pipe plus a tiny fan result in no good thermal efficiency. Moreover, we heard the processor screaming inside of the tight chassis Well, at least thats what we thought at the beginning, however it happened to be the coil whine, which is pretty frequent in this machine.

What We Don’t Like

Volume and power buttons still in a bad placeIf there’s one criticism I had of this design that remains unchanged with the 2017 versionits volume rocker and power button are awkwardly placed. By putting them on the side of the laptop, right where you might grab it, you’re gonna put your laptop to sleep accidentally when moving it around. It’s something you may never get used to, and it’s constantly annoying.

A full-sized SD card slot lets you put a card all the way in, making it perfect for storage expansion.

It’s too heavy for prolonged tablet useSome 2-in-1 designs are really meant to be used as a tablet, but this Inspiron just doesn’t shine when held in your hands. At around four pounds, it ain’t light. Its 360-degree hinges are best used to prop it up like a tent for media consumption.

As a tablet, I prefer using this laptop folded back and propped up on my legs when lying down. That said, you don’t have to think of this as a 2-in-1 if you don’t want to. It’s a perfectly capable laptop when used that way. It has none of the tradeoffs of other 2-in-1 designs, like Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4 or even Dell’s own XPS 13 2-in-1, since it’s a standard laptop first and foremost.

OK, so it’s a little heavy to be used like an iPad, but its other modes are a very handy addition.

As it stands, the Dell to grab for awesome battery life is still the XPS 13, which gave us PCMark8 battery numbers nearly double that of the Inspiron.

Inking With Dell Active Pen

Dell provided me with the optional Dell Active Pen PN5122W as part of my review. Unlike the Surface Slim Pen 2, this pen doesn’t require pairing to work. You can just place the included AAAA batteries in, and get going.

Like many other styli, it supports 4,096 levels of pressure. It also has a cone-shaped nib, which can offer a more comfortable writing experience. Through the Dell Peripheral Manager you can tweak the tip sensitivity, and adjust the tilt sensitivity. You can change the functions of the buttons and map them to different actions. Pairing with Peripheral Manager to do all this is easy, and all you do is open the app, tap the pen on the screen, and you’re good to go. No need for Bluetooth!

I used the pen to ink in OneNote, as well as FreshPaint for basic drawing when holding the Inspiron in tablet and studio modes. I’m not an artist, but I did feel as though the pen is plenty accurate, always reflecting my strokes. It’s a very light-feeling pen, too, which means my hands didn’t feel “tired” after prolonged note-taking sessions during meetings.

The only downside to this new pen is that there’s no way to mount it to the Inspiron. The Dell Premium Active Pen sold with the XPS 13 had a magnetic side that let it attach to a tablet. Even Lenovo includes a USB-A holster for their stylus, and I wish Dell would have done the same.

Dell Inspiron 13 7000 Review: My Initial Thoughts

Dell has been around for a while now and is known to deliver various kinds of excellent-performing laptops. In that regard, the brand released the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 in 2019.

The Dell Inspiron 13 7000 is a lightweight laptop that offers maximum performance and exceptional specs. Some of these specs include an 11th generation Intel Core i7 processor and an optional dedicated GPU.

However, with great features and specs comes a great price. Precisely, when I wrote this review article in March 2022, the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 had a starting price of $1,199.00.

You must be wondering if this laptop can actually deliver a performance worthy of its heavy price tag. Well, to find out, you have to read this review all the way through.

Inspiron 15 5000 Gaming

The Dell Inspiron 15 5000 Gaming is a lower-priced gaming-oriented laptop using either 7th generation AMD Quad Core processors. The integrated video controller is an AMD Radeon R5 or R7 with shared system memory and its discrete video controller is an AMD Radeon RX460 with 4GB GDDR5 memory. Like the Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming series, the laptop uses DDR4 RAM which can be upgraded to 32 GB and has one M.2 slot for an SSD and one M.2 slot for a wireless card. The I/O includes one Ethernet port, one USB 3.0 port with PowerShare, two USB 3.0 data ports, one HDMI port, and one headset port. The audio controller used is a Realtek ALC3246 with Waves MaxxAudio Pro with two speakers and one subwoofer. The card reader is a 2-in-1 type supporting SD card and MultiMedia card . The webcam is capable of 1 megapixel still images and 720p HD video at 30 fps. The display used is a 15.6-inch FHD non-touch screen with a refresh rate of 60 Hz.

The Inspiron Gaming Series was replaced by Dell G Series in 2018.

Software And Warranty On The Dell Inspiron 14 2

There’s not much software preinstalled on Dell’s 2-in-1. I didnt even find the usual Windows 11 bloatware Im used to seeing on new devices. I did find some Dell software of varied usefulness, though. Dell Customer Connect delivers surveys, and My Dell allows users to register their system for the warranty or find their Dell Service tag. Lastly, theres Dells SupportAssist app, which provides automated support and assists customers with their device.

MaxxAudio Pro by Waves, which I mentioned in the audio section above, allows you to customize audio and microphone levels.

The Dell Inspiron 14 2-in-1 comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Peppy Enough For Any Productivity User

The Inspiron 13 Black Edition comes with just the quad-core 8th-gen Whiskey Lake Core i7 as its only CPU option. Overall, I found it to be quite competitive with similarly equipped laptops, but of course, Intels 10th-gen CPUs are showing up in laptops and will likely bring a significant speed increase. That sets the Inspiron a bit behind in the long run.

Its Geekbench 4 scores are right where we like to see them for this processor above 5,000 in the single-core test and above 15,000 in the multi-core test. These arent the fastest speeds weve recorded, but they promise solid productivity performance.

Looking at our more real-life test that uses Handbrake to encode a 420MB video to H.265, the Inspiron 13 Black Edition was a bit more average. It took just over five minutes to complete the encoding process, which is faster than the HP Spectre x360 13s 298 seconds but falls behind speedier options like the Asus ZenBook 14 UX433 that finished a minute faster.

Performance in this test is an indication of whether a laptop is a good option for demanding apps like video editing, where the Inspiron 13 Black Edition wont be the best platform.

As I indicated in the introduction, Dell equipped my review configuration with a PCIe SSD backed by 32GB of Intel Optane cache. That made it very speedy whenever it was reading data that had already been accessed by the system and stored in the cache, but average when accessing fresh data.

Battery Recall Of 2006

Dell Inspiron 13.3" 7000 2

Dell posted notices to many of their laptop customers on August 14, 2006, saying that the Sony batteries on the following models could combust, or even explode:

Models Affected

XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170, XPS M1710
Precision M20, M60, M70, M90

Users of many of these computers purchased between April 2004 and July 18, 2006 received the recommendation that they should remove the batteries and run their computers on AC power until replacements arrived.Problematic batteries made by Sony led to recall programs at other laptop computer companies as well, including Hitachi, Toshiba, Lenovo and Apple.

Putting its so-so reputation behind it, the Dell Inspiron brand has been firing on all cylinders lately, especially when it comes to the premium 7000-series models. Whether you treat it like a tablet, or prefer to use it as a laptop, the latest 7000-series Inspiron offers up value and a premium feel for a lot less than its competition.

From stem to stern, this 7000-series model gives you plenty to appreciate without looking too shabby. Sure it doesn’t have the best battery life or the most amazing display money can buy, but it’s good enough, fast enough, and doggone it, we give it our seal of approval.

Of course, the Inspiron 13 7000 2-in-1 is best used as a standard laptop.

That said, if you spend only a couple hundred dollars more, you’re looking at one of Dell’s own XPS 13 ultrabooks. I’d say that’s a great upgrade if you value battery life and weight. But, y’know what? Dell’s giving users one heck of a laptop here, combining eye-catching design, the latest technology, and a great-feeling metal shell, all for less than $800.

Is There A Better Alternative

Obviously, theres the new XPS 13 2-in-1 to consider. Youre unlikely to get the same battery life, and youll be spending more money. But, youll get a more modern and innovative 2-in-1 thats likely to be faster.

The HP Spectre x360 13 is a similarly priced alternative. Its better looking, equally well built, and offers more options including a low-power Full HD display that will keep you going well into the evening after a long day at work.
