Dell’s top-end Inspiron 7000 series boasts an all-aluminum chassis that’s thinner, lighter and sturdier than its midrange Inspiron 5000 models, which feature metal lids and keyboard decks but flimsy plastic bottom panels. Best Buy today has an Inspiron 7000 marked down to $600, which places it firmly in the price range of the Inspiron 5000 series. And this isn’t some sort of clearance model with older, underpowered components. It packs modern parts and ample storage space and is a great pick for a versatile back-to-school or work-from-home laptop with its $250 discount.

The Dell Inspiron 7000 two-in-one usually costs $850 but is on sale today for $600. It features a 13.3-inch touch display that can rotate 360 degrees into tablet mode as well as tent mode for watching movies. Inside, you get a 10th-gen Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD with 32GB of fast Optane memory. That’s double the storage capacity you usually find in a $600 laptop, where a 256GB SSD is the norm.

Keyboard Touchpad And Stylus On The Dell Inspiron 14 2

Convertible laptops need keyboards that are just as good as a clamshell, and the Inspiron 14 2-in-1s isnt too shabby. Although youre bound to press a button or two in tablet mode, they dont feel too distracting when youre holding the device that way. Plus, the keys are automatically disabled outside of laptop mode.

Each keystroke has slight feedback that makes typing feel comfortable. I fluctuated between 50 and 55 words per minute on the 10fastfingers typing test, which is in the ballpark of my usual score on laptop keyboards.

The Inspiron 14 has gray keycaps and two-level backlights. Theres also a power button that doubles as a fingerprint reader. Otherwise, it has a pretty standard keyboard layout that feels pretty okay to type on. The keycaps feel nice, and although you have to bottom out to get your inputs across, the short travel distance didnt bother me due to the feedback.

Display On The Dell Inspiron 14 2

The Inspiron has a 14-inch touchscreen with a 1920 x 1200 resolution and 16:10 aspect ratio. I watched Tears of Steel in 1080p on YouTube to test out the screen. The film has a lot of colorful moments, and although the picture was sharp, the screen didnt capture the vibrance from some of this movies best moments. While the two main characters argued outside, the colors looked washed out and dim despite being a well-lit environment.

The leaves on the trees also lacked saturation, and all the neon lights on a ship after the film’s 40-year skip didnt pop much.

The Inspiron covers 43.5% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and 61% of the sRGB color gamut. Its tough for the Inspiron to compete with the OLED displays of some of its competitors, though those are significantly more expensive. For instance, the Yoga i9 covers 140.1% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and 198% of the sRGB color gamut. The Inspirons results are closer to the older Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and its LED touchscreen, which covers 69.4% of the DCI-P3 color gamut and 98% of the sRGB color gamut. Thats a much fairer comparison of what youre expected to get from an LED touch display in this price range.

The Dell XPS display leads in brightness with an impressive 469 nits. The OLED displays of the Yoga 9i and Asus Zenbook aren’t that far behind at 352 and 321 nits, respectively. The Inspiron 14 had the least amount of brightness at 251.4 nits.

Are There Any Alternatives

Im unaware of any other 2-in-1s in the same $800 to $1,000 range that equip Intel 12th-gen CPUs, so a direct recommendation is difficult.

If you dont need a 2-in-1 and can drop down a bit in size, then the Asus Zenbook S 13 is a great option. Its $250 more, but it offers a faster AMD Ryzen 7 6800U processor and a gorgeous OLED display.

If you want to save some money, then you could consider the Asus Vivobook Flex 14. It has a similar display and performs similarly even with an older CPU, but the battery life is better.

Big Keyboard Touchpad And Audio Output

A 16-inch laptop is a tweener in terms of including a number pad some models include a numpad and others do not. The Inspiron 16 2-in-1 omits the numpad, and I applaud the move. Even if theres room to squeeze in a numpad without shortening keys on the main keyboard, Id much prefer to have the keyboard centered below the display. And thats what you get with the Inspiron 16 2-in-1. The keys are dark gray with white symbols, and there is enough contrast between the two colors that the key symbols are legible in a variety of lighting conditions. And you get two-level backlighting for when you are working in the dark.

The keys offer shallow travel but a springy feel and make typing fast and comfortable. Without a numpad, the Tab, Caps Lock, and Shift keys on the left and the Backspace, Enter, and Shift keys on the right are luxuriously wide. The power button in the top-right corner doubles as a fingerprint reader.

The touchpad is enormous. And it has a cool design in that it has only three borders, with the top edge blending seamlessly into the rest of the laptop. The touchpad offers smooth gliding and responsive, accurate recording of mouse gestures.

Upgradeability On The Dell Inspiron 14 2

There are seven visible Torx screws on the bottom of the Inspiron 14 2-in-1. After unscrewing them, I realized the top three screws are captive they’re attached to the lid and dont come out. Once open, I could see the battery, which is unfortunately integrated into the laptop on the bottom, and two RAM slots covered by heat shielding with instructions on how to upgrade them and whats compatible.

There are also instructions on removing and upgrading the M.2 2230 SSD on the attached bracket . You could use a longer SSD here and leave out the bracket.

Webcam On The Dell Inspiron 14 2

The Inspiron 14s 1080p webcam provided a clear image, as I could see myself sharply and even some of the buildings in the window behind me. However, the colors were muted, and nothing popped in the office except for the reflection of the lightbulbs. Its a serviceable webcam that will cary you through video conferences and other quick video calls. But, like most laptops, it doesn’t match the abilities of cameras on our best webcam list.

A physical camera shutter slides over the lens when you’re not using it, which is good for the privacy-conscious.

A Large Display Fit For A Laptop

Our Inspiron 16 2-in-1 test system is based on a 16-inch 16:10 display with a 1920×1200 resolution. This FHD+ resolution is enough to produce a sharp picture across the 16-inch panel. The reason to upgrade to the UHD+ OLED display is more for the OLED panel and the incredible contrast you get with it rather than the increased resolution. The baseline display we received offers a dynamic image with bright whites and inky blacks, even if it falls short of absolute black. Its rated for 300 nits, and my measurements put its peak brightness closer to 400 nits. Its bright enough for indoor environments, even in an office that receives lots of natural light.

The 16-inch display with its 16:10 aspect ratio provides ample room to navigate Windows and multitask. The added vertical space compared with a 16:9 display results in less scrolling through long Word docs, expansive Excel sheets, and web pages. Its really a fantastic size for a work computer where you are juggling multiple windows, and its spaciousness is also useful for home use for watching shows or movies.

The big screen is less useful when you flip the display around and use the Inspiron 16 2-in-1 as a tablet. It feels oversized and awkward, especially when holding it in one hand and using the other hand to swipe or tap on the touch display. Creative types, however, might enjoy the large canvas of the roomy screen for sketching and drawing.

Battery Life On The Dell Inspiron 14 2

The Inspiron 14 2-in-1 doesn’t stand out for its battery life. During our battery benchmark, which continually browses the web, streams video, and runs OpenGL tests over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness, the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 held out for 7 hours and 52 minutes. The Yoga i9 stayed on longer, lasting at 8:08. But both machines were severely outperformed by the Zenbook 13 S time of 11:02 and the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1s 11:07.

Commuters who need more than 8 hours of unplugged up time will, though, appreciate that the Inspiron 14s 65-watt charging brick is small and travel-friendly.

Audio On The Dell Inspiron 14 2

The speakers on the Inspiron 14 2-in-1 are impressively powerful. The stereo speaker cutouts are on the laptop’s bottom, near the feet, so playing tunes on a bed wont sound as great as when the speakers are bouncing off a desk. In my testing, Drakes Texts Go Green had fantastic, loud vocal clarity, but the rhythmic kicks also had a strong punch behind them. The rest of the percussion, from the high hats to the bongos, was incredibly sharp, and the synths were buttery smooth.

MaxxAudio Pros software gives you access to an EQ, several presets, and knobs that adjust bass, details, and width. If youre streaming music, some buttons reduce noise and elevate treble. I found the EQ profile valuable, but these speakers cant handle the added effects of the bass and details knob and are better suited for when youre using headphones or external speakers. The app also has Waves Nx 3D Audio, which utilizes the webcam to deliver sound to your position. The last tab on the app allows you to adjust your microphone volume, reduce noise, and set profiles like conference room and recording mode based on your environment.
