Delcorians Debate So You Can Decide

Everything Wrong With Touch Screen Laptops | Untangled

Desktops and conventional laptops no longer rule the business world. In the last few years, weve seen three alternatives make headway in the traditional laptop market.

  • Laptop with touchscreenthe keyboard is attached like a regular laptop but the screen is enabled for touch.
  • 2-in-1 convertible laptopthe detachable or hinged keyboard is inactive when its in tablet mode.
  • Surface tabletMicrosofts iPad competitor, designed to replace your laptop.

If youre in the market for a new laptop or laptop replacement, listen in on a conversation I had with three DelCorians about the pros and cons of these devices.

  • Leigh Andreasen is a hardware acquisition specialist.
  • Diane Stoner, PMP, is testing a hybrid laptop.
  • David DeLorenzo, CAE, is using his Surface as a laptop replacement.

Navigation Is Simpler And Faster

Navigating on a touchscreen laptop is much easier and quicker than non-touchscreen displays. You can switch between tabs and apps far more easily and quickly than using a mouse or trackpad.

You can use the touchscreen if your trackpad stops functioning for some reason. You can easily open and close applications without having to use the trackpad.

You can also use the on-screen keyboard to type like you do in your smartphone. This means you wont face any problem if your Keyboard stops functioning.

Is Your Touchscreen Worth It

Do you have some touchscreen or some convertible? Is it worth it? What are the activities you are using touch? Or are there downsides?

My Thinkpad is geared for mobility so for me battery life is important, and I didn’t really need a touchscreen for anything specific – with that said, downsides for me:

  • touchscreen consumes more power so you have less runtime on battery

  • those fingerprints on the screen sure look bad even after a couple of minutes of using it

  • Since I didn’t really need touchscreen and opted for it just because, I used the touchscreen like 2-3 times over the past 2 years .

Hope it helps.

Its gotta be tens of milliwatts that it consumes

same. I want a very mobile laptop. I work with linux all the day and thus I’m used to my keyboard. I’m just unsure, if drawing pictures is reasonable. But the times I’ll do it are not that often. Your mentioned downsides are present all the time…

In my experience the touch screen was worth it , I usually use it as a laptop 99% of the time however that 1% makes that extra $20 worth it. With that said there are downsides, most of this is specific to the X2_0T’s but your experience may vary.

  • Touchscreen uses alot of Battery Life

  • The laptop is a lot heavier than a usual X230

  • Windows 10 decides when it wants to go into tablet mode, this was hit or miss for me, when going into tablet mode sometimes the screen would follow which direction it is but most of the time Windows 10 just stays in portrait.

A Touchscreen Is Difficult To See In Light

    Touchscreens Make Laptops Heavier

That extra technology baked into the display takes up space and will usually make the laptop heavier. The difference in weight is often in mere grams, but part of the allure of a laptop is how light it is.

The difference in the Dell XPS 13, for example, is about 0.2 pounds. That’s really not a lot, but in a laptop that already weighs under three pounds, it is noticeable.

    What’s Not Worth The Money

Don’t blow your hard-earned cash on laptops with these unnecessary features.

    • Mainstream Laptops with Discrete Graphics: Unless you need to play demanding games or do professional video-editing, paying extra for a laptop with a discrete GPU from Nvidia or AMD is a waste of money. Unfortunately, many mainstream laptops bundle in low-end graphics chips that raise the price but aren’t substantially better than the processor’s integrated GPU. If you just need to play casual games or mainstream MMOs like World of Warcraft, you’ll be fine with a Core i5 CPU that uses integrated graphics.

If you want to play games, use CAD programs or edit 4K video, buy something with at least an Nvidia GTX 960M chip lower-end components like the 940M aren’t worth the premium.

    A Better Choice For Inking

If you have a desire to use inking with a digital pen, perhaps the best reason to have a touch-enabled Windows device at all right now, there is a better option. The XPS 13 2-in-1 is a convertible version of the XPS 13 with a display that folds right round. It can be used either as a traditional laptop, a tablet, or somewhere in between.

The hardware inside is now a little more impressive, too, with 11th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 processors and the possibility to have Intel’s new Xe graphics. It even starts at around the same price as the regular XPS 13, making it an exceptional value laptop.

The beauty of the XPS 13 2-in-1 is that it supports Dell’s Active Pen, so you can write and draw away to your heart’s content. It’s an extra spend, but well worth it, and the 2-in-1 variant is the better touch screen choice for anyone who really, truly wants to have touch on their laptop.

    Higher Screen Reflections And Glare

Learn New Things: Lenovo Flex 2

Touchscreen Laptops use Glossy Displays that reflect and scatter a lot of light from the screen. This means you will see your own and your background reflections on the screen under bright light conditions. This makes them a poor choice for outdoor use and under bright light conditions.

Glossy displays on touchscreen also cause Glare. This glare is a sensation that you feel when very bright and uncontrolled light falls on your eyes. Too much glare can cause eyestrain, headaches and in severe cases Macular degeneration.

Some non-touchscreen laptops use Matte Displays to block these light reflections but these displays are dim and bland which is why they arent used in Touchscreen laptops.

    The Same But Different

The only manufacturer of OLED laptop panels is Samsung, and it only makes one panel at the moment. There’s some variation across the executions, though not as much as I expected. Unsurprisingly, all displays cover the same gamut: over 100% of D65 P3, with the primaries reaching well beyond the edges. They also have good gray-scale tracking — that’s the ability to maintain a consistent white point across grays, and one of the most important factors when looking for a color-accurate display — though not as good in the very dark areas.

While Samsung’s panel is technically capable of reaching a maximum brightness of 600 nits, that doesn’t mean the manufacturer has to drive it that high — that’s one of the ways executions can vary. For full-screen use — you know, when you’re doing laptoppy things — they all settle around in the 380-400 nit range. But at 70% brightness, which I consider a good working level, it’s closer to 200-230. While that’s the same as newer LCD screens, that brightness looks a lot better on OLED because of the contrast.

    Thicker And Heavier Pc

The innovative specs incorporated in the display of a touchscreen laptop usually make it a bit heavier.

The additional feature of tactile touch in a laptop makes a difference of 0.2 to 0.4 pounds. Talking about Dell XPS 13, the non-touchscreen is 0.2 pounds lighter than the touchscreen model while EliteBook Folio G1 without touch weighs only 2.14 pounds whereas the touchscreen laptop is 2.26 pounds a clear difference. Apparently, this difference does not count but it matters when it comes to the portability of a laptop.

Which Type Of Laptop Is Better

Users of touchscreen laptops mention that the touchscreen feature assists with productivity since it helps them get tasks done faster. Touchscreen models are highly feasible for specific tasks, such as doing creative work from sketching to drawing and taking quick notes. The display is more easily navigated because you can directly use your fingers. Moreover, touchscreen models are aesthetically-pleasing and offer exceptional color brightness and accuracy, which is excellent for those who work with color a lot.

As we discussed above, these models also offer certain disadvantages. They are heavier, more expensive, and use more batteries than regular laptops. When it comes to the touchscreen feature, you should consider your personal needs and think about how the advantages of touchscreen laptops meet those needs.

It is the best of times it is the worst of times. The average retail selling price for a Windows laptop is just $477 and you can get a very capable one for much less. However, PC vendors are in business to turn a profit, so they really want you to buy notebooks that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars more. But if you’re going to pay a premium price, make sure you get a laptop that brings something special to the table, not just a couple of high-end components that won’t affect the way you use it.

This seemingly mid-range laptop, though on the higher end of that range, comes with the kind of performance and features you would expect from higher-end machines. You would be hard pressed to find another machine in its range that comes with a 4K touchscreen, IR camera, and an active pen. When taking classes online its safe to say that a computer is essential. A tablet can be somewhat too small to encompass all of your needs and a desktop doesnt allow for much portability. A laptop provides a comfortable size and storage space for any project, while it can be carried and used anywhere as long as its charged. However, there are several different types of laptops to choose from, one of the hottest new features available is a touch screen adding tablet accessibility to a solid machine, but it can be pricey. Should you spring for it, or stick with the classic? Lets take a look.

    HP Pavilion 15

Why You Shouldnt Buy a Touchscreen Laptop?

Dating back to a few decades when a computer was a substantial ENIAC machine with plenty of space-occupying tools on the desk. There were a separate monitor and keyboard for typing and processing. As time progressed, the whole computer was gathered in a compact form called a laptop where a separate keyboard was replaced by an integrated one while a mouse found its substitution in touchscreen.

Nowadays, these touchscreen laptops are so dominating the market and making things quicker with just a tactile touch. These are made so hippie-dippie to attract the customers but believe me, these touchscreens are not worthy to buy. Here are some of the reasons that will emphasize the major flaws you can encounter while buying a touchscreen laptop.
