If you have an old laptop that is struggling to run the latest version of Windows or Mac OS, you might find that repurposing it as a Chromebook gives it a new lease of life and turns it back into a really useful machine.

This can be done by downloading Chromium OS and installing it on your old machine.

Chromium OS makes much lighter demands on your computer than traditional desktop operating systems, and accordingly can turn a sluggish computer into one that boots up quickly and works perfectly fine as a tool for web browsing, consuming content or working in the cloud.

How Does Windows 11 Influence My Purchase

HP Chromebook 14" , ARM Cortex A15, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD ...

Windows 11, Microsofts next operating system, will debut this fall. Essentially, it revamps the look and feel of Windows 10, offers new features such as Android apps, and cuts off millions of existing PCs in the name of security. If you buy a new PC, however, you simply wont have to worry about the hardware issues.

Chromebooks continue to add on to Chrome OS, just like Windows 11 does to Windows 10. Its these profound changes to the OS that justified the new name for Windows 11.

What Are Chromebook Computers

Chromebooks are laptops that operate with Chrome OS an operating system developed by Google.

Although the hardware components of a Chromebook are similar to that of standard Windows laptops , their software side is very distinct.

Most apps and data on Chrome OS are stored in the cloud, and apps can typically be accessed through the Google Chrome web browser.

Since late 2017, all Chromebooks can also run Android apps, and some laptops also support Linux programs.

Chromebooks have been extremely successful since their release in 2011. These machines have been particularly popular among students and educators, with about 30 million students and educators worldwide using them as of early 2019.

Thanks to the features and the cloud nature of Chrome OS, Chromebooks have a wide range of advantages over Windows- and macOS-based laptops.

On the other hand, they have some drawbacks as well, so we cant say that they are the best option on the market for everybody. Lets see the pros and cons so that you can make an informed decision.

Upgrade Pick: Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2

Tested battery life: 11 hours

As someone who tests laptops for a living, Id get the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2 with the Core i3 processor, and if youre willing to pay more for a smaller, lighter, and faster Chromebook with longer battery life, you should too. Most people dont need to spend more over the Flex 5, but if you frequently have dozens of tabs open, run multiple Android apps, or use Linux, the extra memory is worth paying extra for. Unlike our other picks, the Galaxy Chromebook 2 lacks USB-A ports for connecting older peripherals youll need a dongle or dock to attach those.

The Galaxy Chromebook 2s backlit keyboard is shallow, but its still satisfying to type on. And while some laptop keyboards emit a clacking noise as you type, the Galaxy Chromebook 2s keyboard is quiet, which makes it ideal for a shared workspace. The trackpad is smooth and accurate, and though its a bit smaller than the Flex 5s trackpad, we didnt run into any issues with its size.

The 13.3-inch display looks crisp and vibrant, and because it gets a bit brighter than the Flex 5s screen on the highest settings, its better suited for working outdoors in sunlight. The Galaxy Chromebook 2s touchscreen offers the same 1920×1080 resolution as on most of our picks, plus it has a 360-degree hinge for tent and tablet modes, unlike the Pixelbook Go, which only works as a regular ol clamshell laptop.

Everything Is Backed On The Cloud

Although Chromebooks have local SSD storage , they primarily rely on Google Drive cloud storage.

Now, Google Cloud isnt free to be more precise, you get access to only 15 GB of storage space if you arent a paid user. If you need more cloud storage, youll have to purchase a Google One plan.

Speaking of Google One, Chromebook purchases come with a free 12-month subscription of Google One that offers 100 GB of cloud storage. There are some other perks as well.

Thanks to cloud synchronization, you may actually switch to another computer with Google Chrome and pick up your work. Saves in documents are done automatically, so theres no risk of losing your edits either. All data on the cloud is encrypted as well.

Some data like browser cookies, cache files, or downloads will still be stored on the computer, but they are small and shouldnt fill your local limited storage.

Chromebook Vs Laptop: Battery Life

Chromebook vs Laptop – Which one should you buy (in 2021) ?

Other laptops are also catching up in this department, thanks to low-power processors and other enhancements. That is the keyword, though: catching up. Its tough to beat Chrome OS devices in battery life.

Chromebooks usually get at least eight hours of juice. Those numbers are very rare in the Windows or macOS realm unless you pay up.

Of course, you can always get yourself a battery pack thats capable of keeping your laptop or Chromebook alive for longer.

Laptops Vs Chromebooks: Hardware Head

Because running a web browser and apps is not particularly strenuous, Chromebooks usually dont include high-end components. Additionally, the fact that theyre built for simpler workloads means theyre often targeted more at young users, students, or less tech-savvy users who just need to access the web. Both of these factors mean that, generally speaking, the prices for Chromebooks are lower than for many computers based on Windows or macOS.

An important thing to note: The use of Googles OS doesnt mean that all Chromebooks are made by Google. In the same way that Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and other PC makers create their own laptops that run Microsofts Windows operating system, many of these same major manufacturers produce Chromebooks that utilize Chrome OS. Like other laptops, they come in different shapes and sizes, and you can find hybrid 2-in-1 Chromebooks, as well.

To get more specific about the component differences, let’s run through them one by one.

PROCESSORS. Chromebooks employ low-power processors that suit the less-straining jobs theyre meant for. Right now, in inexpensive Chromebooks, these CPUs are most often Intel Celeron chips, though you will run across some Pentium processors, which are a step up from Celeron, and Intel Core i3 and Core i5 processors. You may also run across the occasional AMD-based Chromebook, but these are less common and are low-power options in their current iterations.

What’s The Difference Between A Chromebook And A Laptop

Both laptops and Chromebooks are portable PCs intended to be used anywhere a computer is needed: at a desk, on the couch, or while moving from place to place. But there are some important differences:

  • Laptop: Controlled by a PC operating system such as Microsoft Windows 10, with a “desktop” workspace from which the user launches previously loaded software programs. Internal storage is provided either by a spinning hard disk or a solid state drive. Typically has additional built-in features such as optical drives , multiple ports to attach external devices, etc.
  • Chromebook: Controlled by Google’s Chrome operating system, which uses the Chrome browser as the primary user interface. Relies mostly on internet-based applications and cloud storage . Additional built-in hardware features are intentionally omitted to keep system size to a minimum. Learn more at What is a Chromebook?

Some of the points mentioned above are not exclusive to one system or another. Laptops can make equal use of cloud storage and services, and Chromebooks have multiple external ports, just fewer of them . The essential difference will always be that Chromebooks run the Chrome OS.

The Differences Between Chromebooks And Laptops

A Chromebook is a special kind of laptop, different from standard Macs and PCs.

Its operating system the software that decides how the computer works and what programs it can run is called Chrome OS. It’s made and updated by Google.

As you might expect, Chrome OS is primarily built to run Google apps like , Docs, and YouTube, which are all installed on the Chromebook by default . You log into the device itself using your Google account and password, and will need an internet connection to use most of its features.

The keyboard also has keys you won’t recognize. Instead of a Caps Lock key, it’s got a button called “Search” or “Launcher” that lets you search your device or the internet for anything you type. And in place of the Windows or Command key, there’s a key that’ll bring up .

Finally, they’re not as powerful as most high-end MacBooks, and nowhere near as powerful as high-end PCs. If you want a computer for gaming, animation, or image and video editing, look elsewhere.

The chart below compares a top-of-the-line Chromebook with similarly priced PC and Mac models. The best of every category will be highlighted.

*Based on third-party benchmark tests, as Apple hasn’t released their own stats.

But when it comes down to it, a Chromebook is just another type of laptop. You can think of it like this: All Chromebooks are laptops, but not all laptops are Chromebooks.

If you mostly use Google apps, or are tired of Macs and PCs, Chromebook laptops might be worth a look.

Lenovo Chromebook Duet Battery Life

Refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e 11.6 Touch Chromebook ...

Lenovo claimed that the Chromebook Duet has a battery runtime of 10 hours, which I expected to be a slight exaggeration , but as it turns out, Lenovo actually undersold the Duets battery longevity.

When we ran our battery life test on the Lenovo Chromebook Duet, which involves continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness, this little firecracker gave us 12 hours and 46 minutes of vivacity. The Duets rivals the Samsung Chromebook 3 and the HP Chromebook x360 12b couldnt beat the miniature Chromebook with battery runtimes of 9 hours and 44 minutes and 8 hours and 6 minutes, respectively. The Lenovo Chromebook Duet also conquered the average battery runtime of Chromebooks, which is 10 hours and 19 minutes.

First Off: What Is A Chromebook

Since laptops have been a mainstay for decades, we probably dont need to define a Windows 10 or Apple macOS laptop for you. Chromebooks, though, are a relatively new product category that may be unfamiliar to many shoppers, especially if you havent been in the market for a laptop for years.

Chromebooks are technically laptops, too, and look just like other notebooks from the outside. They have some core differences, though, mainly on the software side, that set them apart from the laptops and desktop PCs you may be more familiar with.

With Chromebooks, were talking about machines that cost, in some cases, as little as $175 to $300. You can find a handful of Windows laptops in this range, but they’re mostly cut-price options that cant do as much as their pricier counterparts. Many of the cheapest Windows laptops are on the smaller side, as well.

Even inexpensive Chromebooks, though, are fully capable of all the tasks Chromebooks are made for, since theyre intentionally somewhat limited to a subset of jobs. You’ll also see on the market more upscale Chromebooks, which focus on nicer physical chassis builds, better processors, more storage, and other extra features. These premium Chromebooks are appealing, providing a higher-quality feel and in some cases 2-in-1 convertible designs. But the core Chromebook concept centers around the less-expensive machines.

Asus somehow fit a webcam on the thin bezel above the C434’s display. As a result, the 720p camera, which captures only average images, still beats the heck out of any nose cam.

My beard looked like a brown blob in a selfie I snapped in our dimly lit office, and my eyes looked glazed over. On the other hand, my hoodie was the correct tone of purple and the lights hanging above me were properly exposed. When I moved the laptop closer to the window, the sun brightened my face, revealing significantly more detail, like wrinkles around my eyes.

Accordingly, a lot of Chromebook users end up making a move to Google Workspace, which, being a Google product, works extremely well in a Chromebook context.

  • switching to Google Workspace will inevitably bring a learning curve

if youve never used it before

  • even if you start using Google Workspace, youll probably still end up with a need to occasionally supply content to other people or organisations in MS Office format.

The good news is that it is perfectly possible to create, save and edit Microsoft 365 files using Google Workspace but you should note that when it comes to editing complicated Microsoft documents, you may have to watch out for formatting problems when you save your files.

There ARE still ways to use Microsoft products on a Chromebook, however.

First, you can use the online version of Microsoft 365 using a Chromebook .

Whilst not providing as comprehensive a set of tools as the desktop version of the Microsoft productivity suite, it nonetheless enables you to edit most Word, Excel and Powerpoint files in a browser and without some of the formatting headaches you might occasionally run into when you try to edit Microsoft format files with Google Workspace.

No Need To Upgrade Hardware Frequently

Another huge advantage of Chromebooks is that they dont need hardware upgrades nearly as frequently as Windows machines.

The primary reason for this is that all the apps are running in the cloud. The only thing you need to access your apps is a fresh version of Chrome OS and a good internet connection. As for the hardware side, its all taken care of by Google.

So no, you wont have to throw away your laptop every 2-3 years because it can no longer run your apps smoothly.

With that said, keep in mind that older Chromebooks may be unable to update to newer versions of Chrome OS. According to Google, Chromebooks that are more than 5 years old are likely to stop receiving updates.

You may continue using your laptop if it runs fine and supports all the apps you want, but upgrading would be a good idea.

Still, upgrading a laptop only once about every 5 years is great and isnt a thing that you can do with MacBooks or Windows laptops.
