Testing The Elitebook 840 G: A Productivity Powerhouse

With six processor cores, the EliteBook’s Core i7 CPU makes short work of the basic productivity tasks for which the laptop is intended. I never experienced lag or sluggishness while browsing the web and installing apps, in many cases simultaneously. I did frequently hear the cooling fan spool up, however, even while no apps were open. HP says it has redesigned the EliteBook 840’s thermal management system to reduce fan noise, but its definitely still noticeable.

On most of our benchmark tests, the EliteBook 840 showed similar proficiency, edging out the quad-core processors in the similarly priced versions of the Dell Latitude 7410 and Latitude 9410 2-in-1. It also edged out the Core i5 in the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, although that machine is slightly less expensive in the $1,900 version we tested. However, the EliteBook can’t hold a candle to business laptops equipped with the latest AMD Ryzen Pro processors. Even the midrange Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U in the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 we tested recently offers better performance in a laptop half as expensive as the EliteBook 840. It’s not quite as impressive as the latest ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8, but it’s an excellent alternative.

Graphics And Battery Life Testing

While the EliteBook 840 can handle basic graphics output without breaking a sweat, it’s not up for 3D gaming, as our graphics benchmarks clearly show. The first, 3DMark, measures relative graphics muscle by rendering sequences of highly detailed, gaming-style 3D graphics that emphasize particles and lighting. We run two 3DMark subtests, Sky Diver and Fire Strike, which are suited to different types of systems. Both are DirectX 11 benchmarks, but Sky Diver is more suited to laptops and midrange PCs, while Fire Strike is more demanding and made for high-end PCs to strut their stuff. The results are proprietary scores, and it’s clear that only the ThinkPad X13 in this group offers passable performance.

Our other synthetic graphics test is Unigine Superposition. Like 3DMark, the Superposition test renders and pans through a detailed 3D scene and measures how the system copes. In this case, it’s rendered in the companys eponymous Unigine engine, offering a different 3D workload scenario than 3DMark for a second opinion on the machine’s graphical prowess. Anything below 30 frames per second on this test suggests the machine isn’t suited to running demanding AAA games, although browser-based time wasters or forgiving titles like Minecraft should run just fine.

Choose from Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, or Ryzen 7 CPU options depending on the level of performance you need, but know that they’re going to deliver performance above 10th Gen Intel hardware. In terms of integrated graphics, Ryzen is also quite impressive. To pair with the CPUs, go with up to 16GB of RAM and up to a 1TB M.2 PCIe SSD.

The 13.3-inch touch display is available in FHD with 300 nits brightness, FHD with 400 nits brightness, and FHD with 1,000 nits brightness and an integrated privacy screen for those who often work in public. Performance And Battery Life

The model that HP sent me is top-end, including an Intel Core i7-10810U and 16GB RAM. The Core i7-10810U is the vPro version of the Core i7-10710U, a 15W hexa-core CPU with 12 threads. It’s from the Comet Lake family, as are all CPUs in business laptops that have Intel 10th-gen processors.

Some of the leading competitors to the EliteBook 840, such as Lenovo’s ThinkPad T14 and T14s, aren’t offered with this CPU. Those only go up to the Core i7-10610U, which is quad-core. Indeed, if you’re looking for top-end Intel parts in a mainstream business laptop, the EliteBook 840 G7 is one of few choices.

Battery life is also weirdly good, although maybe I shouldn’t feel like it’s so weird because I know that this is something that HP focuses on. With my usual usage of the power slider being one notch above battery saver and the screen at 50% brightness, I got close to 10 hours of regular usage. I’m not talking about streaming Netflix or local video I’m talking about actual work. If you’re heading out for an eight-hour day, you can leave the charger at home.

For benchmarks, I used my usual PCMark 8 and PCMark 10.

I did include an AMD Ryzen score, because AMD’s Ryzen 4000 processors are legit. But the Core i7-10810U is the best you can get from Intel right now in a business PC.
