A Shift To Thunderbolt
From a connectivity perspective, the greatest change that the Surface Laptop Studio introduces is the Thunderbolt 4 porttwo of them. Thunderbolt is essentially a supercharged USB-C port, capable of throughput that allows for everything from displays to high-speed external devices to be connected. Microsoft rather smartly included both its traditional Surface Connector as well as the two Thunderbolt 4 ports, which are also capable of charging the laptop. This allows the Surface Laptop Studio to use the small but growing ecosystem of Thunderbolt docks, but also use existing Surface chargers and the Surface Dock 2. There are no older USB-A ports on the Surface Laptop Studio, however.
Theres a catch, though: the Surface Laptop Studio uses Microsofts 102W charger, and most Surface devices use a 65W charger or less. These legacy Surface chargers dont supply enough power for the Surface Laptop Studio, especially while gaming.
The Best Surface Keyboard Ever And A Pretty Good Trackpad
The Surface Laptop Studio just might feature Microsofts best laptop keyboard yet and thats saying a lot. The keyboards satisfying depth and snappy responsiveness brings the excellent Surface Laptop 4 to mind, except this time our fingers had even more space to work with, thanks to the Studios larger design. Its travel and feedback even feels slightly better than our MacBook Pros Magic Keyboard, which we find to be one of the best laptop keyboards around.
Another Laptop Studio feature taken right out of the Apple playbook is the haptic touchpad, which ditches physical buttons in favor of a touch-sensitive pad that vibrates to simulate a click. It worked really well in our testing, as everything from clicking between browser tabs to pinching to zoom into webpages felt responsive and natural. And unlike a traditional click-based trackpad, the Laptop Studios pad responded equally well to our inputs no matter where on the surface we clicked.
Its not as robust as Apples Force Touch trackpads which can respond to multiple levels of pressure to let you quickly look up text or scroll through videos faster though you can adjust the intensity of the Studios rumble or turn it off completely. Overall, the haptic trackpad feels like a nice little upgrade to the Surface Laptop line, and one that didnt take much getting used to.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 Review: Webcam
- Fast Windows Hello face logins
Theres not much to say about the 720p webcam built into the top of the Surface Laptop 4s screen, save that I wish it was a little more exciting. A bump up to 1080p would have been a welcome change that really helped set this latest Surface Laptop apart from its predecessors, all of which have sported 720p webcams above the display.
That said, the Surface Laptop 4s webcam is completely adequate for all your video chatting needs, and the image quality is decent if youre looking to take some laptop selfies.
As far as the much-touted Windows Hello biometric authentication goes, logging in via your face seems speedier than ever. I had some trouble getting the camera array to recognize me while setting the laptop up for facial recognition but once I got it squared away, the Windows Hello login proved so speedy that if I was allowed to blink during the process, Id have missed it.
Inking Is A Pleasure With The Slim Pen 2
Inking with a stylus is a real pleasure on the Surface Laptop Studio. Microsoft said that the screen digitizer has been made more efficient, reducing the ink latency, and it was specifically designed to work with the Surface Slim Pen 2. The laptop supports the Microsoft Pen Protocol. The palm rejection works effectively, and Microsoft reduced the e-ink latency down to just a tiny smidge below perfect. Theres no line offset that I can detect, but there is a bit of jitter, especially when drawing diagonal lines slowly.
The Slim Pen 2 fits withinwell, not a cubby, but a charging well underneath the laptop that magnetically holds it in place and charges the pen. It seems a little weird, but it doesnt seem like it would jar loose, either. A short review period didnt allow us enough time to measure how long the charge lasted.
Microsoft still hasnt convinced me about the appeal of the pens haptic feedback, which provides a tactile response to certain inputs. It felt gimmicky in our hands-on and still feels less useful than perhaps Microsoft intended. That, plus the fact that you can only really ink on the Surface Laptop Studio in Stage or Studio mode, are slight knocks on an otherwise solid experience.

You could make a case that the Surface Laptop Studio is the best PC Microsoft has ever made. Its got a versatile 2-in-1 design that elegantly shifts from laptop to tablet to stand-up display more smoothly than just about any Surface before it, and can be configured with some seriously strong specs for everything from heavy creative work to some moderate PC gaming. Thats not to mention its best-in-class keyboard, great display and robust pen support.
However, with a starting price of $1,599 that jumps up to $2,699 for our tricked-out review unit, the Laptop Studios excellent performance and feature set comes at a cost. Microsofts latest laptop has some major advantages over competing Windows laptops and even the MacBook Pro but is it worth the premium? Heres what we think after spending a few days with this portable powerhouse.
Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio Speakers
Both air and sound are emitted from the grills on the side of the base of the Surface Laptop Studio. The speakers on the Surface Laptop Studio arent bad at all. They get relatively loud, and sound pretty good compared to other laptops.
Theyre not, however, as good as the speakers on the new MacBook Pro, which are stellar. Apple has been leading the class in laptop speakers for some time now, and the Surface Laptop Studio doesnt do enough to change that. Bass response simply isnt as deep or as impressive, while detail is only fine. Again, it gets loud enough for most, and will definitely do the job for things like video calls and listening to podcasts. But if you want to listen to music with any detail, I recommend using a decent pair of headphones or external speakers.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro X has branched out from the standard Pro lineup we’ve become accustomed to seeing over the last few generations. Instead of using Intel hardware, it has inside a custom Microsoft SQ1 CPU that’s essentially a beefed-up Snapdragon 8cx. And that’s been further improved with the SQ2 processor, which is now available thanks to a mid-gen refresh. Add in an Adreno 685 or Adreno 690 GPU, up to 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD, and you have a 2-in-1 ideal for creative people on the move. A Snapdragon X24 modem offers LTE connectivity in all models.
The Pro X has a chassis with a thin bezel to accommodate a larger 13-inch display with 2880×1920 resolution and a 3:2 aspect ratio. Combined with the new Surface Slim Pen, you’re getting an extremely versatile setup.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 Review: Audio
- Loud and clean sound from a compact laptop

The big talking point around the Surface Laptop 4s speakers is the addition of Dolby Atmos technology, which Microsoft claims helps the laptop deliver richer, more spatially accurate sound by pumping it out from beneath the keyboard and bouncing it off the screen.
Im no audiophile, but even I can tell you that the speakers on the Surface Laptop 4 make music and movies sound very nice. Bass-heavy tracks like Massive Attacks Angel still have a kick to them, and while watching the trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong I caught myself glancing down to make sure the laptop wasnt actually vibrating in time with the bass drops.
But the Surface Laptop 4s speakers really shine with more well-balanced tracks, and when I threw on Muddy WatersFolk Singer I was delighted by how clearly the vocals rang out across the room without losing any of their warmth. When I walked down the hall or into an adjoining room I could still hear Waters beautiful voice perfectly, and if I didnt already know Id never have guessed the music was being piped out of someones laptop.

Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio
Surface Laptop Studio delivers a powerful, flexible, workstation-style PC perfect for artists, engineers, and some light gaming. No other laptop currently does everything it can do at this level. But, like all Surfaces, you pay for that experience.

A 17-inch laptop is excellent for multitasking thanks to the enormous display, but you often trade portability. However, the LG gram 17 weighs in at just 2.98 pounds , making it as light as a lot of 13-inch Ultrabooks. The vast display has a 2560×1600 resolution with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and it has a battery that will last for a full day before needing a charge. This is easily one of the best LG laptops.
Thanks to a refresh announced at CES 2021, performance hardware includes up to an 11th Gen Intel Core i7-1165G7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, and two 1TB M.2 PCIe SSDs. There’s no dedicated GPU, but you can take advantage of Intel Iris Xe Graphics from 11th Gen hardware. Ports include Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, USB-A 3.2, a microSD card reader, and 3.5mm audio for generous connectivity. This is also an Intel Evo certified laptop.
Surface Laptop Color Options: Gray Or Black
The new configuration options are the only significant difference between the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 and its third-generation predecessor. Physically, the laptops are essentially identical, which is mostly a good thing. The most noteworthy design element is the 3:2 screen orientation, a signature Surface feature that adds space for viewing more of a vertical document like a web page at the expense of horizontal space for watching a movie. More and more laptops are starting to ditch 16:9 or 16:10 widescreen displays and revert to this once-common screen ratio.
The squared-off shape of the Surface Laptop 4’s display makes the rest of the laptop appear elegantly proportioned, with less empty space on the sides of the keyboard deck compared with a widescreen laptop like the 16-inch Apple MacBook Pro. Both the MacBook Pro and the Dell XPS 15 stick with 16:9 orientations. Theyre also both significantly heavier than the Surface Laptop 4, which measures 0.58 by 13.4 by 9.6 inches and weighs 3.4 pounds. The XPS 15 is 0.71 by 13.6 by 9.1 inches and 4.5 pounds. The 16-inch MacBook Pro measures 0.64 by 14.1 by 9.7 inches and weighs 4.3 pounds, though it provides an additional inch of screen real estate.
The Surface Laptop 4 scores significant points for slimming down, but its far from the smallest or lightest big-screen laptop. The LG Gram 17 offers an even bigger screen than the Surface Laptop 4 and tips the scales at under 3 pounds, a more impressive achievement.

The Keyboard Meets Surfaces Standards Of Excellence Almost
Microsofts Surface Book has remained one of my favorite laptops to type upon for the last few years, but its luxurious 1.5mm of key travel hasnt been replicated across its other Surface PCs. The Surface Laptop Studio continues this trend, with just 1.3mm of key travel. Thats such a fine difference, but its very noticeable! Fortunately, the Surface Laptop Studios keys feel springy and resilient, and theres a marked improvement over the Surface Laptop, whose key travel is also 1.3mm. Keyboards made by HP remain on my personal Mt. Rushmore of laptop keyboards, but the Surface Laptop Studio demands consideration, too.
Otherwise, the keyboard looks just like any other recent Surface, with no changes in the keys. There are three levels of backlighting.
The only quirk I encountered was when I selected a configuration option in a game using the touchpad, the game interpreted it as a double click, inputting my choice and a confirmation of that choice. The Windows 11 Settings menu includes controls for both haptic feedback and touchpad sensitivity to help solve problems like this.
