Windows 81 And Windows Update 1

Windows 8 on a Laptop

In October 2013, Windows 8.1 was released to fix various bugs and improve features and usability. With the update, Windows’ famous Start button returned, and further desktop interface support was added for non-RT users. Meanwhile, RT users actually saw a in desktop support, as Windows altogether removed the desktop tile from the RT’s Metro interface. RT users received a new version of Microsoft Outlook in their Office 2013 RT suite.

The update has been popular among users, and critics have given it positive reviews for the most part. However, many reviewers have felt 8.1’s features should have been available in the original release.

In February 2014, Microsoft announced it would release another Windows 8 update. Known as Windows 8.1 Update 1, this update will again tweak the interface and make it friendlier for desktop users. In March 2014, Microsoft reportedly leaked the update by accident.

Best Laptops With 8gb Of Ram 2022

ByBrendan Lowrylast updated 10 August 22

Here are the best devices with at least 8GB of memory, which is plenty for a smooth laptop experience.

If you need a new laptop, it’s important to make sure that it has at least 8GB of memory. Several budget devices come with 4GB, but even for light productivity tasks like writing and editing documents, 4GB won’t be enough. Having this little memory will result in a user experience that’s often slow and unresponsive. While 16GB is often preferred these days, 8GB is still more than enough for general productivity, web browsing, and even a solid 1080p gaming experience. Thankfully, many 8GB laptops are also very affordable, meaning you don’t need to break the bank just to get a more responsive computer. Our favorite 8GB laptop is the HP Pavilion 15 since it has good specs, a great display, and a strong design, but there are several other excellent alternatives for best laptop with 8GB of RAM available as well.

In terms of its design, the HP Pavilion 15 features a chassis that’s nearly as sleek and stylish as more expensive and premium ultrabook laptops. The keyboard and trackpad are both built well and are enjoyable to use, and the inclusion of a USB-C port as well as dual USB-A ports means you’ll have plenty of peripheral connectivity options. Ultimately, this is one of the best 8GB laptops available, making it our top choice.

Can You Upgrade To Windows 11 From Windows 8/81

While migrating to Windows 10 from Windows 7/8/8.1 is entirely doable, the Windows 11 part gets a bit tricky. There are new hardware and software requirements, and it may not be very easy to fulfill the compatibility needs.

One of the major requirements is Trusted Platform Module 1.2 readiness, which is only possible with device hardware manufactured in the last four to five years. On older Windows devices, if you look under Windows Security, you will see the TPM specification as not ready, which means these devices cannot be upgraded to Windows 11.

Another way you can verify it on your Windows 8/8.1 device is by typing tpm.msc on the Run menu to see whether the TPM is ready to use. You will more than likely receive the following status message: Compatible TPM cannot be found.

The other hardware requirements include WDDM 2.0 and above in graphics card compatibility, virtualization-based security support, Full HD screen resolution , HDR video support and more.

Even if your Windows 8/8.1 device somehow fulfills these requirements, you cannot upgrade directly to Windows 11 from Windows 8/8.1 without first migrating to Windows 10. Once you are on Windows 10, its free to upgrade to Windows 11.

Windows 10 will enjoy full support until October 14, 2025, so even if your Windows 8/8.1 device is not compatible with Windows 11, you should still upgrade it to Windows 10.

Windows 8 Vs Windows Rt

Windows RT is an operating system for tablets that does not allow users to install traditional desktop software written for Windows PCs. Windows 8 runs on both traditional desktops and laptops, as well as “hybrids”touchscreen PCs that can be used as tablets or laptops. Windows 8 is the latest generation of the traditional Windows operating system that is backward compatible, meaning it can run most software that was developed for earlier versions of Windows, like Windows 7 and Vista.

Buying A Laptop For Windows 8

Windows 8 is coming, probably in the Fall of 2012. If you want to download and experiment with a pre-release version, see my article . The Consumer Preview is not the final product, but Microsoft has hinted that the operating system will not change much between now and final release.

Although the standard desktop environment will still be available in Windows 8, Microsoft is making a strong push in the direction of touchscreen computing. The touch-centric “Metro” interface of Windows 8 is ideal for tablets, but laptops will have to change dramatically to take full advantage.

It’s simple enough to bolt a touch-screen display onto an existing laptop design, but using it is somewhat problematic. Reaching over the keyboard to tap the screen is awkward, if not outright impractical. Also, tapping on the screen may well cause it to tilt backward until it’s pointing at the sky. Reinforcing the screen’s hinge would make it thicker than desired. So laptop makers are working on radically different designs for Windows 8 laptops.

Almost A Tablet: Sony Duo 11

The Sony Duo 11 looks like a tabletmost of the time. When you carry it around in its folded state, a seam conceals a sliding keyboard hidden underneath the bottom of the display. Its the laptop version of those old-school slider phones, complete with a compact, Chiclet-style keyboard.

Make no mistake: Touch typists will not like the keyboard on the Duo 11. Really, the most postiive thing I can say about the keyboard is that its functional, offers tactile feedback, and is a little easier to use than an on-screen keyboard. For the most part, however, the keyboard is cramped and uncomfortable. Luckily, the sliding hinge seems durable enough. And given that that the Duo 11 will likely be used more in tablet mode than laptop mode, the slider bit works pretty well.

The entire affair weighs 2 pounds, 13 ouncesunder 3 pounds, in other words. The 11.6-inch screen is an IPS display offering full HD resolution. Sony also includes an N-trig stylus that supports 256 pressure levels, making it a useful adjunct for artistically inclined users. If what you need is a tablet for touch-sensitive art applications, the Duo 11 bears closer scrutiny.

The 5 Best Windows 8 Tablets And Laptops You Can Buy Today

The clamshell laptop is finally joining the beige desktop in the museum of computer artifacts. The basic hinged design made its first appearance in a device called the Grid Compass way back in 1982, so no one can scoff at the clamshells longevity. Nonetheless, times are finally changing, which means its time for the pure clamshell laptop to ride off into the sunset.

The traditional clamshell is being replaced by a wide variety of designs that merge tablets and laptops into a single physical package. These Windows 8 hybrid devices should directly appeal to PC users who might otherwise buy thin-and-light laptops. First-generation hybrids are already shipping, and most of them are flawed in some way, but they nonetheless bring new use-case scenarios to a mobile computing paradigm that hasnt changed much in 30 years.

Sure, there have been attempts to upend the clamshell. Take Microsofts Tablet PC initiative during the Windows XP era. But those early efforts were hobbled by bolting touch control onto an operating system that was poorly suited for touch interfaces. Windows 8 and Windows RT, however, are designed from the ground up for the touch experience.

    Convertabile 2 In 1 Laptop

Having two devices in one is beneficial in more ways than one. These devices not only combine the processing power of a laptop with the portability of a tablet, but they also save you money over buying a laptop and a tablet separately, making them a more cost-effective choice. Most of these systems excel at one task over another, with bend-backs acting as laptops first and detachable providing a superior tablet experience. If you dont need your notebook to be a slate, a traditional clamshell laptop will typically give you more value for your money. The touch screen should be responsive if you are choosing a 2 in 1 laptop.
