Lenovo Legion 5 Keyboard And Touchpad

I was pleasantly surprised with the Legion 5’s keyboard. It not only had deep travel but it also felt punchy to type on. The keys even have a decent layout too. It almost feels like a ThinkPad keyboard, but it’s not quite there yet.

I nailed 76 words per minute on the 10fastfingers.com typing test, which is below my current 78-wpm average. However, the keyboard is incredibly comfortable to use, more so than the previous Legions I’ve tested.

The keyboard features four-zone RGB lighting that can be customized via the Lenovo Vantage app.

When I tested the touchpad, it felt a bit sticky at first, so the material used isn’t really the best, but at the very least, it had a decent click to it. I did notice that Windows 10 gestures like two-finger scrolling were a bit finicky, but that may just be because this is a pre-production model.

Lenovo Legion 5 Ports

You don’t really have to worry about ports with this machine, as the Legion 5 benefits from a large backside with plenty of room.

The left side features one USB Type-C port and a headphone jack, while the right holds room for a USB Type-A port and a webcam kill-switch button.

Meanwhile, the backside sports three additional USB Type-A ports, an HDMI port, one USB Type-C port and an RJ45 Ethernet port. Unfortunately, the laptop does not come with a Mini DisplayPort, so you can’t as easily connect a VR headset.

Geforce 400 Series And 500 Series

On April 7, 2010, Nvidia released the GeForce GTX 470 and GTX 480, the first cards based on the , codenamed GF100 they were the first Nvidia GPUs to utilize 1 GB or more of memory. The GTX 470 and GTX 480 were heavily criticized due to high power use, high temperatures, and very loud noise that were not balanced by the performance offered, even though the GTX 480 was the fastest DirectX 11 card as of its introduction.

In November 2010, Nvidia released a new flagship GPU based on an enhanced GF100 architecture called the GTX 580. It featured higher performance, less power utilization, heat and noise than the preceding GTX 480. This GPU received much better reviews than the GTX 480. Nvidia later also released the GTX 590, which packs two GF110 GPUs on a single card.

Alleged Issues By Cts Labs

Lenovo Legion 5 (2021) Review – Still Best Ryzen Gaming Laptop?

In early 2018, Israeli consultancy firm CTS Labs stated that they had discovered several major flaws in the Ryzen components ecosystem, publicly disclosing them after giving AMD 24 hours to respond and raising concerns and questions regarding their legitimacy, though they were later confirmed by two separate security firms. AMD has since stated that while the flaws are real and will be fixed via updates, their severity was overstated as physical access to the hardware is required to exploit the flaws.

Geforce 20 Series And 16 Series

In August 2018, Nvidia announced the GeForce successor to Pascal. The new microarchitecture name was revealed as “” at the Siggraph 2018 conference. This new GPU microarchitecture is aimed to accelerate the real-time support and AI Inferencing. It features a new Ray Tracing unit which can dedicate processors to the ray tracing in hardware. It supports the extension in Microsoft DirectX 12. Nvidia claims the new architecture is up to 6 times faster than the older Pascal architecture. A whole new Tensor core design since introduces AI deep learning acceleration, which allows the utilisation of DLSS , a new form of anti-aliasing that uses AI to provide crisper imagery with less impact on performance. It also changes its integer execution unit which can execute in parallel with the floating point data path. A new unified cache architecture which doubles its bandwidth compared with previous generations was also announced.

The new GPUs were revealed as the Quadro RTX 8000, Quadro RTX 6000 and Quadro RTX 5000. The high end Quadro RTX 8000 features 4,608 CUDA cores and 576 Tensor cores with 48GB of VRAM. Later during the press conference, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang, unveiled the new GeForce RTX series with RTX 2080 Ti, 2080, and 2070 that will use the Turing architecture. The first Turing cards were slated to ship to consumers on September 20, 2018. Nvidia announced the RTX 2060 on January 6, 2019 at CES 2019.

Noise Heat Connectivity Speakers And Others

The Lenovo Legion 5 uses a mixture of heatsinks, heat pipes, and fans for the cooling solution. Its similar to what was used on the Y560, which is a couple of generations old and is very similar to what I saw on the recent Legion 5 Pro.

And it works just as well too. During normal use, CPU temps hover in the mid 40C area. The heat sink is big enough, so opening things like Chrome and doing light tasks only has a small effect on the CPU temps.

Fans are constantly operating at a very low speed, between 26-28dB. I hardly notice they are even on unless the room is completely silent. And thats one of the greats with this laptop besides gaming fan speeds, this unit hardly makes any noise. Not even coil whine.

Once you start gaming, the thermals start to rise. During an extended session of Horizon Zero Dawn on Performance mode, my CPU averaged 80C and peaked at 90C. The GPU leveled out at 72C. All good results.

The fan noise wasnt that bad while gaming either. 44dB is pretty reasonable, especially considering the tone was a low whoosh, instead of the higher pitch whirl you hear on smaller fans.

If the noise bothers you, you can switch to the Balanced mode, which will drop fan noise down slightly. But its highly game-dependent since each will differ in CPU and GPU demands.

*Daily Use streaming Netflix in EDGE for 30 minutes, Quiet profile, fans at < 30 dB dB*Gaming Performance playing Witcher 3 for 30 minutes, fans at ~44 dB

Should You Buy The Lenovo Legion 5 Pro

You should buy the Legion 5 Pro if:

  • You want a gaming laptop with a more standard design
  • You want a 16-inch gaming laptop thatll play any game in your library
  • You want a laptop with a high refresh rate screen

You shouldn’t buy the Legion 5 Pro if:

  • You’re a content creator who needs the most accurate display
  • You’ll spend a lot of time using the webcam
  • You’re on a budget

Yes, this Lenovo Legion 5 Pro is a seriously powerful gaming laptop. It has a great Ryzen CPU and a good GPU for playing any game youd want. I fell in love with this machine during my month-long review period. It packs a lot of power and is perfect for everything I needed it for, whether I want to game or get some work done. Just the poor webcam held it back from being perfect.

Lenovo Legion 5 Display

Lenovo Legion 5 15.6" Gaming Laptop 120Hz AMD Ryzen 7

The Legion 5’s 15.6-inch display comes with three panel options, all of which are 1080p. The most premium features a 165Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time and covers 100% of the sRGB range with 300 nits and Dolby Vision support. The middle tier one drops to 120Hz, 45% NTSC and 250 nits. Meanwhile, the bottom one drops to 60Hz, but is bumped up to 100% sRGB and 300 nits. It’s frustrating that the middle tier is dimmer than the cheapest display available.

The pre-production unit I went hands-on with has the top-tier panel. In The Marksman trailer, Liam Neeson’s character was driving through desert-esque terrain, and the yellow-green colors that popped on screen seemed relatively accurate. It wasn’t necessarily vivid, but it didn’t seem terribly dull, either. Thanks to the matte coating, the panel seemed bright enough for most situations, but during a night scene, the panel did battle it out with some glare from my window. However, the screen is pretty sharp, detailing the stitching in Neeson’s hat.

Lenovo Legion 5 Audio

The Legion 5’s bottom-firing speakers were surprisingly loud, but had a weird balancing issue. The volume was loud at 10% and barely got louder when I turned it up to 100% — that may be a pre-production issue, however.

I listened to Icon For Hire’s “Demons,” and the intro to the electronic beats was loud and bold, but the electric guitar and drums sounded a little muddy. The vocals, however, were crisp and took center-stage. Unfortunately, the bass wasn’t well-rounded enough to make the percussion pop.

You can customize the audio via the Nahimic app to tune the sound to your liking. It features settings like Surround Sound, Volume Stabilizer, voices, bass and treble. There are also four presets: Music, Movie, Communication and Gaming.

Lenovo Legion 5 Review

Derek SullivanSummary:

  • nice CPU performance and alright GPU
  • lots of upgrade options
  • competitively priced
  • subpar speakers
  • beware of potential issues with the included Realtek WiFi chip

So Im still looking for that laptop to replace the one my wife dropped. After trying the Dell Inspiron 5155 first, my next target was the Lenovo Legion 5, which I found a good deal on at Amazon.

The reason I chose this one was simple the price was good and I saw the rave reviews last years model received. I also got to spend some time with the Legion 5 Pro, which was just plain awesome.

But knowing that this laptop is nearly half the price of the Legion 5 Pro, I did lower my expectations a bit. How good could it be for $1000 right? Well to my surprise, its actually pretty good! Just lower specs is all.

And after spending a solid 10 days with it, I can say my search is over. This one is a keeper.

See below for my detailed report from my testing.
