The Alienware x15 R2 is the pinnacle of what an ultrathin and ultra-powerful 15.6-inch gaming laptop should be. At just 0.63-inches thick, our favorite model of this svelte machine packs in a ton of power on an impressive QHD display. Most games can run at over 60fps at a 1440p, and most competitive games like Warzone and Apex Legends will run at 240Hz and full resolution. And with G-Sync loaded in, youll be in for some stutter-free, butter-smooth gameplay to keep you immersed in the action.

The display on the Alienware x15 R2 is able to impress thanks to its components chugging along inside. A 12th Gen Intel Core i7 processor and Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti GPU combined with a 16GB DDR5 RAM provide this machine with plenty of oomph to tackle just about any game. And Alienware places a focus on cooling, so it overengineered the thermals with vapor cooling chambers, a custom Element 31 thermal paste, and four cooling fans. That makes it easy for this laptop to overclock the 14-core processor and push the GPU to operate at 110W.

Which Cpu Is Better Amd Or Intel

The lines between Intel and AMD are blurring. Intel releasing their latest Intel Core i9-11900K processor providing 8 cores, 16 threads, and a max clock boost speed of 5.3GHz. This processor is a pure cake for gamers it can do wonders with suitable graphics and memory. On the other hand, AMD has released Ryzen 9 5950X. It is the most powerful chip in the AMD family. It has 16 cores, 32 threads, and a clock speed of 4.9GHz.

At this time, Intel leads the gaming vicinity with the most powerful gaming processor, but that doesnt mean that AMD is way behind. AMD processors have enormous gaming capability as well. So deciding the best processor is really hard and confusing. You can only say that Intel is still good in gaming while AMD rules the creative vicinity .

Whats The Best Screen For A Gaming Laptop

When you buy a gaming laptop, one of the most important decisions youll need to make regards the screen. After all, what you get on day one is what youre stuck with until you junk the device. You could run an external monitor but then, whats the point of a laptop?

Screen size

The size of the screen dictates the size of the laptop itself, and thus weight. You cant, for example, get a 17-inch gaming laptop thats four pounds , so think long and hard about whether youre willing to take the weight penalty in exchange for the screen real estate.

If the laptop is going to be your only gaming machine, having a 17-inch screen might be ideal. We should also add that a 17.3-inch screen is easier on weaker eyes than a 15.5-inch screen. This is very much a matter of personal preference.

Screen resolution

The buzzword today is 4K. That high resolution delivers sharper photo viewing and more space for video editing, but that doesnt mean its for everyone. Anything not using the panels native resolution of 3840×2180, such as games running at lower-than-4K resolution, wont look quite as sharp unless you exponentially increase the graphics power of the laptop.

If youre running at 1920×1080 resolution because your GPU cant hit 60 fps at 4K, that feature is moot. For many gamers, 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 is more optimal.

Performance Test Cinebench R23

When we are going to buy a laptop besides its features, the essential thing that matters a lot to us is its performance, how a machine performs under pressure.

To evaluate the performance, I test the MSI Titan GT77 on CINEBENCH R 23. In a quick run of CINEBENCH R23, the laptop hits about 24140 points in multi-core. Then for comparison, I ran the same test on my two desktop PCs, and I got around 27000 from 12900K on a desktop computer. The other desktop PC shows 23000 with a 12700K.

We usually do not expect such kind of results from a laptop computer, but the result I got in the test was surprising. In the past, we got such results from our desktop PCs between core i7 and core i9 processors.

Does A Gaming Laptop’s Cpu Matter

The MOST Powerful 16-inch Gaming Laptop…

Yes, but not always. In general, sims benefit from faster clock speeds and more cores since those are required for the heavy calculations when worlds get complex. More and more AAA games are also starting to balance loads better between the CPU and GPU where possible as well. And if you bounce back and forth between a game and the rest of Windows, it can help speed that kind of multitasking a bit.

Still, a lot of games, especially first-person shooters, don’t take advantage of more than four cores. That was partly Intel’s rationalization for its continued reliance on its old 14-nanometer architecture for the 10th-gen high-performance processors. It let the company boost single-core clock frequencies, compared with gains it would have made by moving to a smaller process technology such as Ice Lake, which is designed to support more cores on less power draw.

Intel recently jumped to 10nm Alder Lake for its 12th-gen CPUs, which combines performance and power-efficient cores similar to Apple’s M1 chips. What we’ve seen thus far does show how fast the 12th-gen H-series CPUs can run and how it can help extend battery life.

How To Pick A Gpu For A Gaming Laptop

The single most important piece of hardware in a gaming laptop is undoubtedly the GPU. For AMD fans, the situation is as sad as it is in CPUs: Its an Nvidia GeForce world. As with CPUs though, the good news is that the dominating products are top-notch.

The hardest part will be deciding just how much GPU you need. Our general guidance is to buy as fast a GPU as you can afford and are willing to heft. Generally, the faster the GPU , the larger and heavier the laptop.

Because one of the easiest buying mistakes is to not be armed with enough knowledge, weve compiled a list of results weve seen from gaming laptops using 3DMark Time Spy. Its a DirectX 12 test that is a good representation of modern gaming. Our score focuses in on the graphics portion only, so the CPU differences have very little impact on the score.

Heres how various gaming laptops perform in the DirectX 12 graphics test Time Spy. We hone in only on the graphics performance so the CPU performance doesnt matter very much.

We generally think the GTX 1050 or GTX 1650 is a good 1080p GPU, if youre willing to play on medium settings. To hit High in some games, youll need to lower the resolution to 720p.

If you really want 60 fps at 1080p with few compromises, the GeForce GTX 1660Ti or GeForce RTX 2060 is a good level of graphic card to shoot for. If you need to feed a high-refresh panel of 144Hz or 240Hz at 1920×1080, wed recommend notching up to an GeForce RTX 2070 or even higher.

What Is A Good Thin Gaming Laptop

There aren’t a lot of thin and light gaming laptops out there, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find several options to choose from.

The best ones are impressively portable without sacrificing power or battery life. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 sits at the top of that pile, with MSI GS65 Stealth and the Razer Blade Stealth following closely behind.
