Hp Omen 1: Two Minute Review
If you’re looking for a powerful gaming laptop that can double as your everyday work or study device then the HP Omen 15 offers some compelling features at a price that won’t break the bank.
Our review sample was provided by Box , a UK-based retailer where you can find the HP Omen 15 available to purchase . There are a few different configurations available for those who want to optimize areas like graphics, display, and processing power, but regardless of what variant you buy, there are several features that remain consistent.
The number of ports available also makes this a great choice for content creators or streamers, with the inclusion of a built-in SD card reader, a 3.5mm audio port and a Display Port.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 and RTX 3070 graphics card options available for configuration ensure that this will run just about any game you throw at it, the 165Hz display is perfect for giving you an edge in competitive games and the Omen Gaming Hub software gives you plenty of performance optimization.
There are, of course, some caveats. The chassis has some very noticeable flex to it, likely to keep costs low, so you may find yourself bending the lid or the base if you apply too much pressure. Many laptops have some flex to them of course, so unless you’re adamant about buying an ultra-robust device that can really take a beating, this shouldn’t cause too many issues.
Hp Omen 15 Software And Warranty
The Omen 15 comes with HPs suite of system management software, including HP PC Diagnostic, Power Manager, Privacy Manager, Support Assistant, Sure Sense, Work Well, and the previously mentioned Audio Control, all meant to enhance your experience. It also comes with my favorite HP software, Quickdrop , which allows you to quick send files back and forth between your computer and phone.
Aside from those standard HP wares, there are a few Omen-specific ones like the Omen Light Studio, Omen Audio Control and Omen Gaming hub. In the latter, you can see a list of all your games, clips you have taken while gaming, and rewards youve earned. Theres also access to remote gaming and coaching if you sign up for an Omen Gaming Hub membership.
Like every Windows 10 computer, you will find apps for Skype, Office 360, Microsoft Solitaire suite, and Xbox console.
Hp Omen 15 Performance
I threw some video-editing at it to see how the Omen would perform. I shot some 4K video and cracked open Adobe Premiere then edited about 2 minutes of video quite easily before rendering it in 4K. That went off without a glitch. There wasnt any freezing or stuttering while moving around in Premiere and my workflow was flawlessly handled. Even when I tried editing with DaVinci Resolve, which is far more GPU heavy, the Omen 15 ran smoothly and quickly rendered the same 4K video.
I then popped open 50 tabs in , and even had a few playing YouTube videos with one running WandaVision on Disney Plus. The gaming rig ran smoothly and never got hot but the fans did kick in loudly after about 10 minutes. Fortunately, performance was not affected.
The Omen outscored its competition during our synthetic tests, starting with Geekbench 5.0, an overall performance benchmark. The Omen scored 6,416, pushing past the Alienware m15 , which scored 6.314, followed by the Asus ROB Strix G 15 and its5,210. However, all of our competitors fell below the premiere gaming laptop average of 7,378

Hp Omen 15 Keyboard And Touchpad
The black Chiclet-style keys on the HP Omen 15 are RGB-backlit and you can change the lighting scheme within the Omen Game Hub application. The keyboard is responsive with each key providing a soft bounce. However, I did find the keys a little small with the placement of the keys slightly left of center, which took a moment to adjust to.
After realizing the keyboard was off-center I took the 10fastfingers typing test and tried my best to not fat-finger two keys at a time. I scored 67 words per minute with 78% accuracy, which is not my best, but it would have to do.
The 4.6 x 2.7-inch touchpad is responsive and accurate when navigating websites or documents. It performed all the Windows 10 gestures, such as two-finger swipes and three-finger taps, nicely. The bottom corners give very firm and clicky feedback when using either right or left clicks.

Hp Omen 1: Battery Life
Our movie test came back with an average of 5 hours 22 minutes of video playback, which is sufficient for watching a few movies while traveling, and the PCMark 10 ‘Home’ benchmark hit 5 hours 50 minutes. Gameplay usage averages at around 4 hours, though this dips to 3 hours 25 minutes for demanding games.
There are some fairly mixed reports going around regarding battery life on the HP Omen 15 , but we saw these after conducting our own tests so our results are free from any outside influence. As a warning though, people have reported a more unsatisfying range of between 2-3 hours, but we couldn’t replicate this ourselves after running our original battery life tests, and that could be restricted to a model using a GeForce RTX 3070 GPU.
It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the laptop, but if you’re concerned, keep close to a power outlet so that you don’t go AFK in the middle of your Call Of Duty game.
Hp Omen 15 Performance And Gaming
Powering the Omen I tested is an Intel Core i5-10300H, a Nvidia RTX 3060 Laptop GPU, 16GB of 2933Mhz memory, and 512GB of SSD storage. The 144Hz screen looks clear, and colors aren’t overly saturated. Instead, they’re more life-like, and one could even argue, muted.
As I’ve already hinted at a few times, performance on the Omen is surprisingly good. Benchmarks don’t tell the full story, but they are part of the story, so here’s a quick look at how the Omen compares to the Acer Predator Triton 300 SE and the Asus TUF Dash F15.
As you can see in the chart, the Omen stayed in lockstep with both comparisons. Keep in mind, they both had an Intel Core i7 processor, while the Omen I tested is using an i5.
As for actually spending some time behind the screen and keyboard gaming, the Omen kept up with Battlefield V at Max Fidelity settings, averaging 105 fps. I’ve become slightly obsessed with Knockout City , and maxed out the display’s refresh rate with an average of 144 fps while playing.
Finally, when cruising the streets in Need for Speed, the Omen averaged 101 fps. All three of those scores are impressive, and while Knockout City isn’t the most resource-intensive game, the other two are and the Omen handled both of them just fine. You could easily get to the displays 144Hz refresh rate if you spend some time adjusting the graphics settings for each game. I’d rather max out the graphics and play at a slightly lower refresh rate, but you do you.

Hp Omen 15 Graphics Gaming And Vr
The HP Omen 15 comes with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q GPU with 8GB of VRAM. We tested the Omens gaming chops by playing Borderlands 3 in 1080p and our unit delivered 64 frames per second, which cruised past the 54 fps premium gaming laptop average. The Alienware m15 came in second with 56 fps followed by the Strix G15 at a very pedestrian 32 fps.
The Omen did even better on the Grand Theft Auto V Benchmark with 85 fps, beating the 74-fps average. The Alienware m15 once again came in second with 79 fps followed by Strix Scar with 64 fps. Bringing up the rear was the Strix G15 at 44 fps.
The Omen scored 94 FPS during our Far Cry New Dawn benchmark, surpassing the 84 fps average. In second place was the Alienware m 15 with 80 fps, followed by the Asus ROG Strix Scar with 73 and closing out our group scores with a disappointing 57 fps was the Asus ROG Strix G15.
When we ran our Metro: Exodus benchmark our unit once again led its group with a score of 59 fps, falling just below the average score of 60 fps. The Asus ROG Strix Scar placed second with 40 fps, followed by our last place finisher the Asus ROG Strix G15 with 30 fps.
For our finale using our Red Dead Redemption benchmark the Omen 15 scored 58 fps, which is above the 54 fps average but, only rewarded the unit with second place as the Alienware m15 R3 scored 59 fps beating our unit by a nose. Closing out our group was the Asus ROG Strix G15 which strolled in at 30 fps.
Hp Omen 15 Battery Life
If there’s one negative about the HP Omen, it would be battery life. Using PCMark 10’s battery life benchmark, the Omen lasted 2 hours and 17 minutes before powering down. That’s enough to watch a movie on a flight, but don’t expect to get through a workday on a single charge.
For reference, the Acer Predator Triton 300 SE and Asus TUF Dash F15 powered through 6:30 and 9:10, respectively.
One feature the Omen has that I grew to appreciate during my time testing is fast charging. Using the included power adapter you can charge the battery from zero to 50% in 30 minutes, but with the catch that the laptop has to be powered down. Even with that requirement, the battery does top-off at a steady pace when it’s powered on.

The specifications of the HP Omen 15 mean it can play just about any AAA game you can throw at it, including Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. You won’t be breaking any records for framerates, but you can expect at least 30 fps in fully maxed-out settings across really demanding titles like Metro: Exodus, and a satisfactory 50-70 fps in most thematic single-player games.
Thanks to the high refresh rate of 165Hz, the laptop is better suited to competitive shooters and battle royale titles such as Apex Legends and Fortnite, and while the 3ms response speed isn’t the fastest on the market, it’s more than enough to mitigate any ghosting or motion blur.
Speaking of Apex Legends, with all settings maxed out you’ll get around 80 fps on the HP Omen 15, rising to 130 fps on medium. You won’t be getting GeForce RTX 3080 performance out of the RTX 3060 GPU, but as an entry-level gaming laptop, this is more than sufficient to play games at an enjoyable quality and framerate. Not to mention of course, that the Nvidia graphics card allows you to take advantage of framerate boosting DLSS on eligible titles.
