How To Set Parental Controls On All Your Devices

Windows 10 – Parental Control
  • 16 minute read

The internet puts the world at your fingertips. From laughing at your favorite shows to shuddering at the news, anything you want to access is just a click away. But that may be worrisome if youre a parent or teacher.

Children often have access to multiple devices. Make sure to project each of them by implementing parental controls. They are available on most major internet-enabled devices such as computers, smartphones and gaming systems.

Parental controls help reduce the risk of your child viewing inappropriate content on the web. In addition to setting parental controls, its important to monitor your childs internet activity and use age-appropriate settings on devices.

Main Features Of Free Parental Control Apps

Below are some of the features and functions that you can expect from a free parental control app:

  • Content Filtering: This allows the app to filter and restrict the contents and apps that the users can access. It filters content that is inappropriate for kids, such as those with themes related to crime, drugs, sex, and violence, among others.
  • Time Limitations: It restricts the duration kids can access a specific app. Once the time has lapsed, the app locks and becomes inaccessible for a certain period or until you turn it back on.
  • Location Tracking: Through this feature, you will be able to track the geographic location of your kids smartphone, tablet or any other gadget and know where exactly he or she is.
  • Payment Blocking: This feature makes it possible to prevent kids from making any form of payment, such as in the apps they will download. It also restricts them from buying items in the games they are playing or sending money online.
  • Text and Call Monitoring: This allows the app to monitor incoming and outgoing texts or calls from your kids phone.

How We Reviewed Parental Control Apps

    • 16 parental control apps considered
    • 27 data points assessed
    • 6 hours of testing
    • 20 hours of research

To find the best parental control apps, we set up different apps, tested them as both children and parents, and then addressed strengths and weaknesses.

On top of hands-on testing, we dug into each apps features, prices, compatibility, and customer reviews. We also consulted with other online safety experts.

Three members of our team tried out the different apps, looking for how well each performed in these specific areas:

    • Setup and installation: how easy it was to install on different devices , how much time it took, and whether or not there were any issues that came up.
    • Performance: Did the app do what it was supposed to do? Would it be easy for kids to work around it?
    • Features: what extra features were available, and did they deliver as promised?

Are There Parental Controls In Windows 7

Theres no family setting option in Windows 7, as it was introduced in Windows 8, so its a lot harder to implement the kind of features listed above without going to dedicated parental controls software packages.

Another thing to consider is that Windows 7 support ends on 14 January 2020, after which point Microsoft will no longer issue security updates. This will open up PCs running the old operating system to potential risks from hackers and viruses, which could be a much bigger problem. With this in mind, wed strongly recommend upgrading to Windows 10 soon, or possibly looking at a new PC if the budget allows.

How To Set Parental Control In Windows 10 Or Windows 11

Firstly, before setting up Parental Control you must have two separate Microsoft accounts. One will be your account, which will be a Parent account. The second account will naturally be a child account.

The parent account is set by default when you first launched the Windows. It’s the account you’re currently using without it you can’t even create a child account. Now follow the steps below to set up the child account in your Windows:

  • Go to the Start menu search bar, type in settings, and select the best match. Alternatively, press the Windows key + I.
  • Head to Account -> Family & other users.
  • Then click on Addaccount. If you’re not logged in, you’ll be asked for your Microsoft account credentials. Enter them to login.
  • Now click on Create one for a child.
  • Set the email address and password, and then click Next.
  • Enter a username and hit Next.
  • Finally, enter the date of birth of your children. This is important because Microsoft will set restrictions on the child account based on this.
  • When youre done, youll see a new dialog box . This confirms the child account has been created and successfully linked with yours.

    Familytime: Best For Ios Families

We love the in-depth cloud-based dashboard, which shows you exactly what your child has been typing into search engines or YouTube and automatically flags concerning activity for you to review.

Youll see which apps and websites your kid spends the most time on, who theyre calling, and the content of their texts. Theres also social media monitoring, but its limited to Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo Messenger.

You can also set up rules and restrictions from this dashboard, but thats where Qustodios user-friendliness takes a nosedive. Other apps offer simpler interfaces for parents.

    Location tracking and history

The other neat feature we like about Qustodio is its family tracker. You can glance at it and see the current location of each child. Need to trace their steps? You can do that too with the location history function.

    Free version

    • Web, app, and search monitoring
    • Online content filter
    • Chromebook
    • Kindle

Of course, each of these platforms has its own rules regarding privacy. Some features arent available across the board. Android users have access to the most features, whereas Chromebook users basically get a web filter to block inappropriate content.
