The Nvidia Quadro RTX 3000 for laptops is a professional high-end graphics card for big and powerful laptops and mobile workstations. It is based on the same TU106 chip as the consumer GeForce RTX 2070 but with reduced shaders, clock speeds and memory bandwidth.

The Quadro GPUs offer certified drivers, which are optimized for stability and performance in professional applications . The performance in these areas is therefore much better compared to corresponding consumer GPUs.

NVIDIA manufacturers the TU106 chip on a 12 nm FinFET process and includes features like Deep Learning Super Sampling and Real-Time Ray Tracing , which should combine to create more realistic lighting effects than older GPUs based on the company’s Pascal architecture . The Quadro RTX 3000 is also DisplayPort 1.4 ready, while there is also support for HDMI 2.0b, HDR, Simultaneous Multi-Projection and H.265 video en/decoding .

    The graphics processors inside the two products shown below have the same name: RTX 3070. One is destined for desktop PCs, and the other is a gaming laptop. But they don’t even get close to delivering the same performance. What’s going on here? Is this a problem? Let’s get benchmarking!

    Today we are checking out Nvidia’s new GeForce RTX 3070 Laptop GPU, a product that’s already available in a handful of gaming laptops, and is the faster and more expensive sibling of the RTX 3060 Laptop GPU we reviewed a few weeks ago.

    Specification wise, the RTX 3070 Laptop GPU doesn’t follow the exact same core configuration as its desktop counterpart. Both use GA104 silicon but the desktop GPU features 5888 CUDA cores, compared to just 5120 on the laptop version. Boost clock speeds are also over 100 MHz lower for the laptop variant in the best cases, while the 8GB GDDR6 memory configuration remains the same.

    Ultimately, to take a 220W desktop GPU and shove it down into a 80-125W realm, some things need to be sacrificed, and for this generation it’s both the GPU core configuration and clock speeds.

    This naming convention can be a bit confusing for laptop buyers as the 80W and 125W variants will produce different levels of performance, however in the last few weeks Nvidia has mandated that OEMs display the GPU’s TGP on laptop’s spec sheets, a considerable improvement.

    The only real problem with Nvidias new GeForce RTX 30-series laptops is its stunning RTX 30-series desktop cousins.

    No matter how impressively fast the mobile CPUs areand our first tests show they offer everything from good to outrageous performancethey will never measure up to full-fat GPUs. Nor should they be expected to, except in the messy stew of physics, modern marketing, and occasionally toxic consumer expectations.

    So dont expect this mobile GPU to be a desktop GPU. But do expect laptops with RTX 30-series to offer very impressive graphics performance, even compared to some of the biggest and heaviest laptops around.

      2020 and 2021 has so far been an absolute disaster when it comes to getting hold of new graphics cards, especially from Nvidia. You need a lot of luck and patience to be able to grab a card or a lot of money to buy it via Ebay.

      One way to get hold of a RTX Series 30-card is to buy it in a laptop. Earlier this year Nvidia released the mobile version of the RTX 30 Series and these of course are a bit easier to get hold of as you buy them together with a laptop.

      As expected, a RTX 3080 in a laptop is not as fast as a regular RTX 3080, mainly because the have completely different limits in power, but how big difference is there? To look into that I decided to pit my desktop with a Ryzen 5950x and a Gigabyte RTX3080 against an Asus Zephyrus G15 laptop with a Ryzen 9 5900HS and a RTX 3080 Laptop GPU.       The NVIDIA RTX A2000 Laptop GPU or A2000 Mobile is a professional graphics card for mobile workstations. It is based on the GA107 Ampere chip and offers a similar performance to the consumer GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU. It also offers 2,560 CUDA, 20 Raytracing and 80 Tensor cores paired with a 128 Bit memory bus. It is available in different variants from 35 – 95 Watt with different clock speeds . The GPU supports eDP 1.4b to connect the internal monitor and DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 for external connections.

      There is no more Max-Q variant but every OEM can choose to implement Max-Q technologies .

      In 2022 Nvidia released a slightly improved version of the RTX A2000 with more and faster graphics memory. The original 4 GB with 11 Gbits has been doubled to 8 GB GDDR6 clocked at 14 Gbits.

      The raw performance should be similar to the GeForce RTX 3050 Ti for laptops at the same TGP level. Both GPUs depend heavily on good cooling and a high TGP for good performance. At a similar power consumption level the RTX A2000 should be clearly faster than the old Quadro T2000 and T2000 Max-Q.

      The GA107 chip offers 2.560 FP32 ALUs of which half can also execute INT32 instructions . With Turing all shaders could still execute FP32 or INT32 instructions. The raytracing and tensor cores on the chip were also improved according to Nvidia. The Ampere chips also include an improved 5th generation video encoder and a 7th generation decoder .

      Late last year, we projected that the performance gaps between mobile GeForce RTX 30 and desktop GeForce RTX 30 would widen significantly when compared to the previous RTX 20 generation. Now that the first RTX 30 laptops have come to market, our in-house tests between a handful of GeForce RTX laptops have unfortunately upheld our prediction. Jumping from a mobile RTX 3080 to a desktop RTX 3080 can net users a 50 to 60 percent gain in raw graphics power compared to just 10 to 15 percent between the mobile RTX 2080 to desktop RTX 2080. Similar results also exist between the RTX 2070 series, but this page will focus on the RTX 3080 series for simplicity’s sake.

      The culprit for the wide performance discrepancy this generation isn’t much of a surprise. Desktop gamers have probably noticed by now that their GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards have significantly higher power ratings than their older RTX 2080 cards by about 40 percent . Consequently, RTX 3080 cards are typically thicker and with stronger cooling than the older RTX 2080 cards to compensate for the extra heat generated.

      On laptops, TGP ratings have hit a brick wall. The mobile RTX 2080 is rated for only 150 W maximum and so is the latest mobile RTX 3080 meaning the new mobile Ampere series must run under similar power constraints as the older mobile Turing series.

      Nvidia used to give some of their laptop parts the Max-Q moniker. Basically, any GPUs without it were closer to their desktop counterparts while Max-Q-GPUs have been cut-down versions. This has changed with the Series- 30-GPUs and now the manufacturers must specific the TGP , the boost-speed as well as which Max-Q features the GPU.

      TGP is the total power budget that the GPU and its subsystems have access to. Very simply said a high TGP will mean more performance. This also means that a RTX 3070 with a high TGP in some cases can outperform a RTX 3080 with a low TGP.

      The XMG Neo 15 2022 version is one of the most powerful RTX 3080 Ti laptops out there, and if youre based in the US you should be able to get the Eluktronics Mech-15 G3 with the same specifications. The core components of both laptops are the aforementioned RTX 3080 Ti graphics card, and a 12th gen Intel Core i7-12700H processor though we expect to see AMD CPU variants down the line too with better battery life though slightly worse in-game performance. With a massive 175W TGP, the RTX 3080 Ti in this laptop is one of the few full power versions available, ensuring the very best FPS performance in game for a relatively reasonable price, though to get the most out of it youll want to consider the external liquid cooling system: the XMG Oasis, which retails for around 200.

      Onto the display, and many of its specs are the same quality as the previous iteration. Expect great contrast ratio, a nice high peak brightness of around 380 nits and good color accuracy, though the panel uniformity may be somewhat lacking.       The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 is the second fastest Pascal based graphics card in mid May 2016. It is a high-end desktop graphics card. The mobile pendant is also called GeForce GTX 1070, but features more shaders and a lower core clock . Both cards are based on a cut down GP104 chip as the GTX 1080 and manufactured in 16 nm FinFET at TSMC.       Compared to the GTX1080, the GTX1070 features less CUDA cores that are clocked a bit lower . Instead of the new GDDR5X, the GTX 1070 uses slower GDDR5 graphics memory – but still 8 GB. The TDP is also reduced from 180 Watt to 150 Watt.
