For When Monitor Hdmi Fails
If by any chance, one or both of your monitors HDMI interfaces are busted, you can still use your HDMI cables and the laptops HDMI interfaces to make the connection.
All you have to do is use a different monitor port, for which youll need the corresponding HDMI dongle. If, for example, you decide on using the monitors VGA or DVI ports, just grab yourself a pair of VGA-to-HDMI or DVI-to-HDMI adapters.
- Connect the respective adapter to your monitor
- Connect your HDMI cables to your laptop as usual
- Plug in the other ends of the HDMI cables to the HDMI ends of the adapters
- Move on to the rest of the process on your laptop as usual to complete the setup

Troubleshooting: The Alternative Route To Setting Up Dual Monitors
If this doesnt work, theres an alternative way to set up a dual monitor, says Will at EZ Shopper. Select Start and then click onto Settings. Select System and then click through to Display.
Your PC should show your desktop and automatically detect your monitors. If you cannot see this, click Multiple displays and then Detect, Will advises. Next to the image of your desktop, there should be a dropdown list where you can choose how your screen will project across your displays.
Once youve chosen your desired set-up, click Apply. To make the most out of your displays, you should opt for the recommended settings however, you can change the resolution of your displays if you wish to do so, says Will.
Check Available Ports On Your Laptop
Then you may need to check the ports on your laptop. Generally, a computer or laptop should include any of these four ports:
Display Port can provide an interface with optional audio high-definition content protection.Digital Video Interface is usually color-coded with white plastic and labels.Video Graphics Array is normally color-coded with blue plastic and labels.High-Definition Multimedia Interface can connect all kinds of video devices and provide sounds through the cable.
You can check the ports on the back or on the sides of your laptop. In addition to the ports on your laptop, the monitors should have the corresponding ports as well. That will save your time and money to connect them. Otherwise, you will need to buy an extra adapter, such as a DVI to HDMI adapter to have them match.
If you dont have the match ports or if there are not enough ports on laptops
If the ports on your laptop are not the same as the connectors in your monitor cables, or there are not enough ports, dont give up. There is a workaround! You can try one of the methods below to continue:

Easy Steps To A Dual Monitor Setup In Windows 10
A dual monitor setup lets you multitask like a pro and increase productivity! Learn how to set up dual monitors in Windows 10.
A dual monitor setup isn’t always plug-and-play. Extending your screen to a second or third monitor requires a suitable graphics card with sufficient ports. This is particularly challenging if you’d like to add more than one external screen to your laptop.
We’ll help you figure out what you have, what you need, and how to configure your multiple monitor setup.

Using Two External Monitors
The 15-inch screen in your laptop may not be enough, so consider adding a second monitor. Here’s where it gets a little tricky.
Firstly, you need to find out what other ports you have available on your Windows laptop. Are there any spare HDMI or miniDP ports? If you do, you’re in luck! All you have to do is get a new display compatible with your available port, and you’re ready to go.
But if all you have is an extra USB-C port, you have to check if it supports transmitting a video signal. You can look at this table Kensington made to see if you can plug a monitor into your USB-C outlet.
The rule of thumb is if you see a Thunderbolt or DisplayPort logo beside the USB-C port, then it will work with a screen. All you need is a proper USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to DisplayPort/miniDP cable.
But if you don’t see any of the above logos beside your USB-C port, you can check your laptop’s manual. You can also contact your laptop’s maker and ask if it will support a video signal. If they say that it doesn’t support any display protocol, I’m afraid you can’t connect a monitor via that port.
If you don’t have an extra video port and absolutely need to have that extra monitor, get a USB 3.0 to HDMI adapter. It will be able to display your screen at full resolution, depending on the adapter.
Enable Multiple Displays Features
Windows 11 includes a few new features to improve the multiple-monitor experience. For example, when you disconnect the external display, all the apps on the secondary display will minimize automatically. Then when you reconnect the display, the apps will restore automatically to their original location.
To enable these features, use these steps:
When disconnecting the external monitor, all the apps will minimize in the Taskbar when using these settings. Then when you reconnect the display, all the apps will restore automatically to their original locations.

Check The Cable Connections
If you own a Windows laptop, connecting external displays should be very easy to do. The first step is to determine which type of cable you need. Most modern laptops have an HDMI, DisplayPort, mini-DisplayPort, or USB Type-C port.
If the inputs and outputs on the monitor and laptop match, you can purchase a cable, such as this simple , and hook the two together. If the inputs dont match, or youve tried connecting your PC to your monitor and have no picture, scroll down for more information on adapters and converters.
Connecting Three Monitors Or More

If you find two external displays lacking, you can use your laptop screen as a third monitor. Use the same procedure we described above, and you’ll be good to go.
But if you must have three large displays on your Windows laptop, you have to do a little bit more digging.
Check first if your laptop sports either one of the following ports:
- USB-C with DisplayPort Alt Mode
- USB-C with Thunderbolt3
- DisplayPort
Also, you must have Multi-Stream Transport compatible monitors or an MST hub.
If you have existing or want to use HDMI monitors, I recommend going for the MST hub. This plugs into your DP-compatible port and then splits the signal into up to 4 distinct monitors.
These hubs come in either DisplayPort or HDMI outputs. Thus, allowing you to use HDMI monitors in your setup. The advantage you get in this method is you can use more affordable HDMI monitors. However, it will also limit you to a maximum of four displays.
Your other option is to use MST-compatible monitors only. These displays connect via a daisy-chain configuration. This would allow you to have up to seven screens on a single port.
One downside to this is that these displays are few and far between. Furthermore, they are far more expensive than their non-MST counterparts. This is because they tend to be considered professional displays. That is why they typically have enhanced features such as color accuracy.

A USB display connection is available on several monitors, and there are also many portable USB displays on the market today. This effectively converts your USB ports into additional display outputs, allowing you to easily connect a dual external display if your laptop only has one.
- Remember that USB displays may have more lag, lower refresh rates, and poorer picture quality than other displays.
- This is dependent on the speed of your computer and the amount of USB bandwidth available.
- Theyre still great for Slack, email, and websites. Just not high-definition video or games.

Do Even More With Displayfusion
If, after all that, you’re still left wanting more, a third-party tool called DisplayFusion was designed with multiple monitors in mind. With DisplayFusion running in your system tray, you can gain more control over your wallpapers, create custom keyboard shortcuts, align windows to the edges of any display, or automatically dim the inactive monitor so you don’t get distracted.
Seriously, this program is chock full of useful options, so download the free version to try it out for yourself. It’s a bit more limited in features than the paid version, but if you like what you see, you can buy a license for $30. I purchased it seven years ago and haven’t regretted it for a second.
