Should I Buy A Laptop Or Desktop

Settle On An Operating System

Should I Buy a Tablet or a Laptop? | The Sync Up

The Mac vs. PC debate is one of the oldest in modern technology, and we’re not going to pick a side or try to settle that particular religious war here. But if you’re not wedded to one or the other by years of habit and are open to switching, here’s a quick rundown of your choices.

Windows 10 is the latest iteration of Microsoft’s operating system. Desktops that use it and previous versions of the OS are what most people typically rely on, so you’ll be assured of the best compatibility and the widest selection of third-party software. Desktops running Windows 10 are also readily available below $500, making them attractive to casual users, families looking for a second PC, and bargain hunters.

Macs are an excellent choice if you’re already in an Apple-centric household, since they offer seamless compatibility with iPads and iPhones, including the ability to send and receive messages on any device connected to your iCloud account. The cost of entry will be higher than with the least expensive PCs, however.

Google’s Chrome OS is a viable alternative to Windows and macOS, but desktops running it are rare and best suited to niche uses like powering a restaurant menu display. A fourth option is to buy a desktop with no operating system at all and install an open-source one of your choosing, such as Ubuntu Linux. We don’t recommend going this route unless you’re technically savvy, willing to experiment, and okay fixing software compatibility issues and other quirks.

Can I Extend The Memory Of My Computer

Usually the memory of your computer can be extended.;

Most desktop motherboards come with four memory slots, but rarely will a new computer comes with memory installed in all of those. The empty slots can be used to install more memory.

If your computer doesn’t have any free memory slots, then the memory can be expanded by removing the existing memory modules and installing new, higher capacity memory modules. For example, if your computer has 8GB in its two slots and you want to expand to 16GB, you will have to remove those two 4GB modules and install two 8GB modules.

Laptop computers can also have additional memory installed. It is common with laptops to remove the existing memory and replace it with a memory module of a greater capacity.

Different computers have different requirements for the type of memory , the maximum memory and the combination of memory that can be installed. Make sure you check your manual in the case of a prebuilt computer, or seek advice.

The Best Place To Buy A Laptop In 2021

The moment has finally arrived. Youre ready to buy a new laptop. Youve read all the guides to the best laptops, asked all your friends, and learned how to avoid making any buying mistakes. Now you need to choose between hundreds of online stores and up to dozens of physical locations. Its not easy.

To get the best deals, you have to find the right place to shop, but that can get confusing fast as each shop might sell a variety of models at many price points. To help, weve made a list of our top choices for the best places to buy a laptop right now.

Where Should I Buy A Desktop

Which Printer HP 8620 vs. HP 8630

Since you wonât be lugging a desktop around nearly as much as you would a laptop, itâs less important to handle the chassis and test-drive its build quality in the store before you bring it home. Still, if the desktop comes with peripherals included, it can be helpful to type a few lines and move the mouse around in the store. And setting eyes on an all-in-one desktop is more crucial than with a typical tower desktop or mini PC. The screen is an integral part of what you are buying, and eyes-on time matters, especially if youâre not well-versed, say, in the differences between a 24-inch and 27-inch panel, or a 1080p screen versus a 4K one.

If you limit yourself only to the selection at your local electronics outlet, though, youâll miss out on many great desktops. In fact, some configurations can be exclusive to a single reseller, such as Best Buy, Costco, or Walmart. Other merchants, such as Micro Center, frequently have in-store-only deals that aren’t available anywhere online.

This is where return policies come in handy. If you find a desktop with your ideal specifications online but can’t audition it locally, a seller with a liberal return policy is your best friend. Just make sure you’ve got adequate time to return it, if it ends up not working out.

Desktop Vs Laptop For College/school

If youre a student, you will benefit from being able to take your laptop to and from school. With a laptop in the classroom , you can use it to take notes, bring up your course syllabus, follow along with your teachers/professors slides, etc.

A laptop will also allow you to write papers, study, or do research anywhere on your campus.

And, of course, having a laptop means you can bring all of your notes, papers, work, and research back to your dorm or house with you. And, it will all be in one convenient location.

On the flip side, though, with cloud sharing technology, plenty of available computer labs on campus, professors putting their lectures online, and the increased power of smartphones/tablets, a laptop isnt absolutely necessary.

You can take notes in class on your phone and access them later on a desktop at home, or on a computer in a computer lab on campus.

You can also go back through your professors slides or work on a paper you are writing/researching when you get back to your dorm, or in a computer lab on campus as well.

So, if youre a student and youd rather choose the power of a desktop over a laptop, you can definitely get by. But a laptop for school is more convenient when all things are considered.

Who Should Buy A Chromebook

A Chromebook powered by Googles Chrome OS is a simpler, more optimized affair. Essentially, its useful to think of a Chromebook as a dedicated Chrome browser running on top of secure hardware. It can also be hundreds of dollars cheaper than a comparable Windows PC, even with the same processor inside! Numerous American classrooms have settled on Chromebooks for in-person and distance learning, and often made them available for loaning to students.

Now, however, Chromebooks can do much more, including Android apps and cloud gaming, making them entertainment as well as productivity devices. Google is also adding more features to Chromebooks to make them as useful as Windows devices. Amazons list of the best-selling laptops is often dominated by Chromebookssee for yourself! Pay attention during the holidays or peak sales periods like Prime Day, when prices can drop;really lowdown around $100 or more. Just make sure youre not buying a Chromebook thats fallen out of the support window.

  • Great for productivity:
  • Updates occur behind the scenes, so you can just open the lid and go. Google handles all the security, toonow with better biometric options up front, too. The internet offers much of what you need, whether that means working within web apps or using Chrome plugins. But its the workarounds and little inconveniences that you may find annoying.

    Chrome OS or Windows? The choice is up to you.

    Which Laptop To Choose For Graphic Design

    Before getting too far in the decision-making process, consider the kind of work you do and your budget. If you do complex 3D work you will need to be on the upper end of all the specifications. If your work is mostly 2D, you can be at the mid to low end of the range.;Looking for a laptop to use for graphic design can be a challenge, and different than purchasing a laptop for general use or gaming. You want a laptop that’s light enough to be portable but powerful enough to do complicated work.;

    The most important specs to look at for graphic design are the operating system, CPU, the memory or RAM, the storage drive, the display type and size, and color accuracy.;

    Why You Might Want To Buy Used

    What CPU Should I Buy? – Intel Edition 2016

    In getting a used PC, you can save a few hundred dollars on a computer that can do most of the same stuff a new one can. For the things most people do on their computersbrowsing the web, editing documents and spreadsheets, or looking at and editing pictures and videos from your phonea new computer and one from a few years ago dont perform that differently from one another.

    If youre on a strict budget, buying used may allow you to buy something thats nicer than a modern budget laptop for the same money. A high-end Lenovo ThinkPad that sold for $1,400 two or three years ago, for example, will have an as-fast-or-faster processor and a better screen, and will be made of nicer materials, than a new laptop thats selling for $500.

    Plus, buying a used PC cuts down on electronic waste. You rescue an old but functional computer from getting thrown in the trash, and you avoid buying a cheap PC that will wear out and be disposed of in a few years.

    A tower does take up more space than other desktop options though, and that potentially limits where you can use it in your home or office. Plus, unless you’ve already got them, you’ll have to add on the cost of a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

    An all-in-one is basically a large monitor with the actual computer built into the back or base. They typically use the same components you’d find in a laptop and, as such, don’t have the performance capabilities and/or the expansion opportunities of a tower.

    Because they’re all one piece, setup usually requires little more than plugging it in and connecting a keyboard and mouse. The minimal setup keeps your desk clutter-free and makes them much easier to move from room to room compared to a tower. However, should something go wrong with the display, you lose your entire computer.

    Mini and stick PCs

    Like all-in-ones, mini PCs use mobile components to keep them small. So small actually that you can hide one behind a monitor or tuck one into an entertainment center to use as a media server connected to a TV. Stick PCs take this a step further, shrinking an entire computer into something that’s just larger than old-school thumb drive. There’s an HDMI video output at one end letting you plug it directly into a monitor or TV.

    The Asus Chromebit is a stick PC running on Google’s Chrome OS.

    For Those Who Love To Customize

    If you purchase directly from a company like Acer, Apple, Dell, or Microsoft, you can avoid the confusion of digging through listings on Amazon or Best Buy. This option is best for those whove done the research and know exactly what they want.

    Also, purchasing through a manufacturer gives you the most amount of options for customization. Want a laptop with extra memory but dont care about the 4K display? Chances are, youll be able to configure it that way.

    If you love tweaking features to get exactly the computer you want, consider buying from a manufacturer its worth the extra cost and shipping fees. This rule applies to boutiques too: specialty shops that custom-build PCs. These include Digital Storm, OriginPC, and even Razer.

    Desktops And Laptops By Application

    Ultimately, the sole benefit of a laptop is mobility. If it wasnt for the mobility of a laptop, there really wouldnt be any reason to choose a laptop over a desktop. But, the reality is that mobility is a huge benefit for certain types of users. And, as such, laptops are a necessity for those individuals.

    In this section, well take a look at the types of applications that laptops and desktops make the most sense in.

    In my opinion, there are four main categories of application that one will be looking to use their computer for. They are:

  • Gaming
  • School
  • Leisure
  • Most computer owners will do some sort of mix of the above. But lets take a look at each of those categories to give you an idea of how laptops and desktops stack up against each other for each use application

    Reasons To Buy A Laptop Now

    Since its launch in 2015, major Windows 10 updates have all gone smoothly on any PCs I’ve used or tested. As Windows 11 appears to be a modest overall update, focused in large part on the appearance of menu bars and grouped windows, I — at this moment — have no qualms about buying a Windows 10 laptop now and waiting for the free Windows 11 update later this year.;

    You can also easily stick with Windows 10 for now, if you’d rather. That OS will continue to be supported with updates and patches until at least 2025.;

    The gaming updates coming to Windows 11 are mostly based on the Xbox app, and any updates there should come to Windows 10 as well. And if you upgrade to Windows 11 later, I don’t see any reason it should affect gaming hardware.;

    If you’re thinking of buying a new laptop now, I don’t see any major CPU/GPU updates coming before next year that would change my mind. Nvidia’s latest 3000-series mobile chips started showing up in laptops earlier this year .

    Desktop Vs Laptop: What Do I Really Need As A College Student

    When deciding between purchasing a desktop or a laptop computer as a college student, youll need to consider a handful of criteria and determine what best fits your needs.

    Although most students opt for laptops, modern desktop computers offer a number of exclusive perks that leave the debate wide open.

    According to HP, 2008 marked the first year that laptop sales surpassed desktop sales, and since then, the popularity of portable devices has surged.

    So, here are some distinctions in the Desktop Vs Laptop debate:

    • Size
    • Repair

    Used Is Not Refurbished

    The terms used and refurbished can not really be used interchangeably. Refurbished laptops generally come from companies like Dell, as we covered above, and are restored by professionals to as good condition as possible. Steps may include taking units apart to check various components, including the battery, internal storage, power supply, ports, and other parts.

    You’ll generally need to go through manufacturers and select retailers for trustworthy refurbished laptops.

    Laptops that are classified as “used” are sold by consumers after they’ve upgraded to a better model, decided the laptop wasn’t quite what they need, or they simply need to raise some funds. Used laptops aren’t checked in-depth, and as such, there could potentially be an issue with a component. Platforms like eBay and Craigslist also do not check products prior to listing.

    Retailers like offer the best of both worlds. Sellers can list a used laptop, but it’s also possible to locate certified refurbished laptops that come with a limited warranty. It’s recommended you spend significant time doing research. Here are some handy tips to buying a refurbished or used laptop:

    • Check the laptop right away for any defects that weren’t listed by the seller. This includes opening up the devices to have a quick peek inside.
    • Check for any warranties.
    • Read the fine print to see what’s covered by the warranty.
    • Consider using a credit card to pay for used laptops.
    • Check return policies.

    RAM Upgrade Guide – What You Need to Know

    For Mac and iPhone or iPad users, the annual operating system upgrade has become largely seamless. Changes are generally incremental and downloading and installing the updates is easy. And because there are only a handful of hardware variations, all made by Apple, there are few compatibility problems.

    But there have always been legit reasons to keep your old hardware on its current OS and not upgrade. The switch between Windows 7 and Windows 8 was… rocky. Many people skipped Windows 8 and held out for Windows 10, which was much better. Some of those holdouts even resisted Windows 10, with some valid concerns.;
