How We Test Student Laptops

iPad Pro vs Laptop? – Which Should YOU Buy for University? (Faculty Specific)

We know that buying a new laptop can be a huge investment. Even more so with laptops for college students. Thats why we take our jobs seriously, and test every laptop we recommend on this list extensively.

That process involves using them in our day-to-day lives to see how long their battery lasts, how robust they are college kids have hectic lives, after all, and how cool they stay under pressure. We also look at their design, including how stylish they are, if they are thin and light enough to carry around with, and how comfortable they are to work on. Because the webcam and microphone in a laptop is also incredibly important, especially these days, we take time to test those out as well.

When it comes to performance, we use a mix of real-world tests and synthetic benchmarks to see how powerful these laptops are. This means using Windows 10 and running various apps and seeing how fast they load, noting down any problems.

Battery lives are also important, so well keep track of how long we can use the laptop without needing to charge. To get specific numbers, we also run our own battery life benchmark that plays a looped 1080p movie until the battery dies and the PC Mark 10 battery life benchmark, which replicates real-world usage, such as web browsing and document creation. These tests give us an excellent idea of how long the batteries in these laptops last.

Don’t Sweat The Storage

Once upon a time, the rule for buying a computer — any computer — was “buy the largest hard drive you can afford.” These days, it’s usually preferable to choose speed over size. That means forgoing the 1TB traditional hard drive in favor of a smaller-capacity solid-state drive , which will make even a lower-end laptop run at a faster clip while at the same time helping extend battery life.

OK, but can you really get by on, say, 256GB of storage, or even 128GB? That’s what you’re likely to find in a lot of the more affordable laptop models. But remember, we’re living in a cloud-powered world: Most students stream their music and movies from services like Spotify and Netflix, and therefore don’t need a ton of local storage for media. Documents consume very little space, and will likely be housed on Google Drive or Office Online anyway.

Is A 256gb Ssd Enough For School

Youll want enough storage for the operating system, your applications, and all of the documents and other files youll need to keep up with your studies. Microsoft recommends 32GB for Windows 10 itself, and you can figure that at least 50GB will be required once your laptop is up and running. Then, youll want to factor in your applications and keep in mind that many games can take up a few gigabytes all by themselves. That means that a 128GB SSD might be a little light and that 256GB is likely a better starting point.

If you want to balance cost and expandability, then look for a laptop with an SD card slot. Today, you can add a 400GB micro SD card for around $60, meaning that if your local storage gets maxed out its possible to greatly expand the space available for your most important documents. Also, if you use a cloud storage service like Microsofts OneDrive that allows you to store all of your documents offline and then download only those you need right now, then you can save on local storage requirements.

Should I Get a Laptop/Tablet Hybrid? Cranky Flier

The first, and most important, thing to do is check with your school for specific system requirements. They may have hard-and-fast hardware recommendations.

Some colleges and universities want their students equipped with Windows-based laptops, to cut down on software incompatibility issues or to keep technical support concentrated on one platform. Others don’t care which operating system you use, whether it’s Windows, macOS, or even Linux if you’re a hard-core type. Some institutions have onsite computer repair centers that service only laptops purchased from the university or an affiliated computer store on campus using one of these facilities, the turn-around time will be much quicker than if you were to send it overnight to the original manufacturer.

Buying Guide For Best Tablets For College Students

A small size and portability is a big plus with a tablet, especially when choosing a tablet for a college student. Tablets excel at web surfing, e-books, app usage, and streaming. A keyboard or stylus peripheral adds functionality, and can be particularly good for note taking as well as art disciplines. Tablets offer a great replacement for textbooks, since downloading is instant and often cheaper. In some cases, a tablet may offer all the technology a student needs, although some college programs insist on a laptop. Even then, a tablet is also a good bet as a supplemental tool for additional uses including social media and connectivity, like video chat. Look for a tablet with long battery life, a decent display size, and good storage space.

The Best Tablet For College

First of all, you want a tablet that’s lightweight and will save you from years of back pain. Rather than making you carry around heavy tomes from the library, many modern college classes have e-books available to download straight to your tablet, so you can do your reading for class anywhere. From there, screen quality and memory will be deciding factorsnot to mention price. For a tablet that balances all of these features, opt for the LG G Pad F2 8.0. Clocking in at under a pound , this is one of the lightest tablets around. Swap in this tablet for heavy books or a laptop and your back will thank you. Although it’s lightweight, it still has an 8-inch-wide screen and 16 GB ROM and 2 GB RAM, plus you can add more memory with a microSD card. Priced at just $150, the LG G Pad probably costs less than that expensive kitchen set a sales associate convinced you you’ll need .

Best Laptop For High School

High schoolers laptop needs can vary based on their interests, but most dont need powerful machines with lots of bells and whistles especially if they come with glitches or serious downsides that could interfere with schoolwork. Miles Riehle, a student at Laguna Beach High School, has a high-end Surface Pro 7 but finds it overwhelming. There is so much other stuff that I dont use very often, he said. Something simpler might be a little more straightforward.

The best operating system may depend on what your child is used to. Aryan Nambiar, a student at Barrington High School in Illinois, has an iMac at home and enjoys using an iPad for his schoolwork. Riehle says he would prefer a Chromebook because he has an Android phone and often uses Google services.

But almost every student I spoke to agreed that the most important feature of a high school laptop is portability. Kids attending in-person classes may be carrying their device around for much of the day with a stack of other books. Look for a 13- or 14-inch screen, or a lighter 15- to 17-inch model.

Battery life is another key feature. It can be a real struggle to find a place to charge while in class, says Cas Heemskerk, a sophomore from the Netherlands. Unlike college students, many high schoolers dont have frequent breaks to juice up their devices, so try to find something that can last a full day.

You won’t run across Windows 10 S Mode in your shopping travels too often, but it’s good to know what it is, since it’s most often encountered in education environs and budget laptops.

Microsoft’s student-centric version of its operating system is a locked-down version of Windows 10, aimed at preventing malware from being inadvertently downloaded. It’s compatible with any app in the Windows Store, but it doesn’t allow third-party Windows programs unless you convert your laptop to full Windows 10 Home or Pro. You can easily switch to the full version of Windows 10 for free using the Microsoft Store, but you won’t be able to go back to S Mode once you convert. Also, this version of the OS supports only the Edge browser.

Help Me Laptop Should I Get A Tablet To Take Overseas To College

    ByMichael A. Prospero24 August 2010

It’s not just businessmen and women who travel abroad. Students, too, go overseas for college, and like those they’ll eventually join on that long gray line, need something portable yet powerful. Ri, one such student, is looking for such a laptop, and possibly one that’s a tablet, too.

    Ri writes:

I’m a high school student going overseas for college next year in January and so I’m planning on getting a new laptop to go with me. Currently I own a netbook and a 4 year old Fujitsu T4210, but they’re both proving to be too slow for strenuous use. So, I’m looking for a practical laptop for some serious work, including elaborate powerpoint presentations, basic graphic design and relatively intense video editing that isn’t overly heavy and won’t have me living off the nearest power outlet, as I constantly work on the go.

If you dont need a tablet, then the Alienware M11x would be a good fit for a laptop that not only is powerful, but lasts a good while, too. You may just want to invest in a larger monitor for when you get back to your dorm room. Other options would be Apples 13-inch MacBook Pro which, while its GPU isnt as strong as Alienwares, can also do a fair amount of video editing, and has excellent endurance and a larger screen.

Laptop Vs Tablet: Consider Your Budget

What laptop should I buy for college? (2013 edition ...

Getting a $2000 machine may not be financially viable for many students. And spending that much on a device isnt even necessary for college needs. Ideally, you would want a device that will give you the best value for the money.

You can get a new, good-quality laptop for as low as $300 that will allow you to attend classes and take notes without issue. If you are thinking about to buy used laptops, the price can even go as low as $100, which is still good enough for doing classwork. Even some colleges provide laptop programs to new students. You may consider the offer.

Regarding tablets, you may need to cash out over $300 for the base model that doesnt offer a keyboard. For more specs or additional accessories, you need to pay extra. So, consider your budget when buying a laptop vs. a tablet.
