Goodbye Intel: Testing The Apple M1
Once all of this transitional dust settles, M1 Macs are going to be significantly faster across the board compared with the Intel Macs that preceded them. To demonstrate, we ran a handful of tests on our recommended M1 MacBook Air and Pro configurations, the Intel Core i5 MacBook Air configuration that we recommended earlier in 2020, and a fully loaded Intel Core i9 iMac from 2020.4 Heres what we ran:
- The Geekbench 5 benchmark, which is good at showing how processors do when performing for short periods of time. This includes both a single-core test, which measures the processors speed when just one of its cores is active, and a multi-core test that uses all available processor cores.
- Maxon Cinebench R23, which can be used to demonstrate how processors perform over longer periods of time. It also has both single- and multi-core tests, and we ran the 30-minute version of the test.
- Transcoding an 87-minute movie using HandBrakes 1080p30 Fast preset, to test how quickly each Mac can encode a video.5
- Running devMEremenkos Xcode Benchmark in using Apples Xcode development environment. This tests how long it takes a Mac to compile code, as youd do before you uploaded an app to one of Apples App Stores.
We chose all of these tests because theyve already been optimized for Apple silicon, and because they represent a mix of basic benchmarks plus activities that actual people do with their Macs.

Features Of Pc Laptops
The best thing about PC laptops is the diversity of models available. HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus and Microsoft all offer a wide array of laptops with different specs and capabilities. Therefore, its easy to find a computer suitable for your needs, whether youre a student, artist, businessperson or gamer.
Windows 10 comes installed in almost all Windows laptops on the market and offers an open platform that makes it easy to find a third-party app or software to accomplish what you want. On the other end of the spectrum are Chromebooks, which use a Linux-based operating system that works well when performing lighter tasks like web browsing or word processing.
Since several manufacturers make Windows laptops and Chromebooks, you can find a PC laptop for as low as $99, but a well-functioning notebook for everyday use ranges from $500-$1,500. Of course, expensive PC laptops can cost up to $5,000, depending on the specs.
Should You Buy A Mac Mini Now Or Wait
The Mac mini was updated in November 2020 when it gained the M1 chip, the older model was last updated in 2018, although it had its storage doubled in 2020. We don’t expect to see an update to the Intel model.
If you’d like to get one of the older Intel models, that have been discontinued, check out the latest deals below, alternatively we have even more Mac mini deals.

The iMac is probably Apple’s most famous Mac. First introduced in 1998 and causing shockwaves in personal computing, over the years the iMac has lost its old bulky CRT monitor and slimmed down – some people don’t even realise that the whole computer is concealed behind the display . The design of the iMac hadn’t changed much in the past decade or so until April 2021 when Apple launched an all new design with the 24in iMac. Now it is incredibly thin and comes in seven different colours. Read about the 2021 iMac.
Alongside the 24in iMac Apple still sells the entry-level 21.5in iMac and the 27in iMac, which we will discuss below. For more information about how the different iMacs compare read: Which iMac.

What You Should Buy Instead Of The Macbook Air
Overall, you’re much better off spending the extra $200 on the base model of the MacBook Pro than you are buying a MacBook Air. The new MacBook Pros are almost as light as the MacBook Air, and they’re actually thinner at both computers’;thickest points.
If you want something even lighter and slimmer than than the MacBook Pro, you could go for the MacBook. They’re a little more expensive-per-performance than the MacBook Pros, but they are beautiful and incredibly light and slim.;
The Best Laptop For College
The Dell XPS 13 is a compact and reliable laptop. Its beautiful chassis, excellent 16:10 display, and great performance make it an excellent choice for general-purpose users.
This late-2020 model comes with Intels new Tiger Lake processors, from a Core i3-1154G4 up to a Core i7-1165G7. It starts at $999, so its a bit cheaper than the 2-in-1.
My review unit blew through the work tasks I needed it to do without any slowdown or heat. It did quite well, and handily beat its 10th Gen predecessor in both gaming and media work. It didnt do as well as the XPS 13 2-in-1, which is why that model is ranked higher on this list. But if you like the look and feel of the XPS 13 and would prefer a clamshell model , this XPS is still a great option.
Theres an OLED model of the XPS 13 as well, which costs $300 more than the FHD model. This model has worse battery life, but does deliver a stunning picture.

The Best Multimedia Laptop
Most thin and light laptops share one significant weakness thin, tinny audio. Thats not the case with the Lenovo Yoga 9i. This 14-inch convertible has a rotating soundbar in its hinge, meaning that no matter how its positioned, the speakers face outwards. You can expect clear, booming sound whether youre using the 9i in tablet, tent, or clamshell mode.
Theres a lot more to like as well. You get an excellent 1080p touch display and a built-in stylus for easy artwork and note-taking. The 11th-Gen processors deliver satisfactory performance and all-day battery life. The audio quality, screen, and convertible form factor all add up to an unbeatable machine for multimedia entertainment.
Better For Video And Coding: 13
The M1 version of Apples 13-inch MacBook Pro is better than the MacBook Air for specific kinds of work that benefit from additional processor speed, and it has a larger battery that lasts for a few extra hours. Otherwise, the Pro has most of the same, well, pros and cons as the Air, including its good keyboard and trackpad, great screen, limited port selection, and mediocre webcam.
Most common tasksopening apps and browser windows, playing videos, making a few photo editsneed peak processor performance for only a few seconds at a time, so you wont notice a difference between the Air and the Pro for those things. But the Pro has a fan inside to help it dissipate heat, which means the M1 processor can run at its peak speed pretty much indefinitely, where the Air eventually has to slow down to prevent overheating. In our tests, this made the Pro between 10% and 20% faster at time- and processor-intensive tasks like encoding video, compressing files, and compiling apps for distribution via any of Apples various app stores.
The Pro we recommend comes with 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storagethe extra memory will help if you open dozens of browser tabs at once, or edit large high-resolution images and videos. If you dont need that extra memory because you dont do that kind of work with your computer, get the Air instead. You can add a larger SSD if you want, but you should still consider external storage before you pay Apples sky-high SSD prices.

Ten Reasons Macs Are Better Than Pcs
There is a never-ending debate as to whether Macs are better than PCs. Better is of course a subjective term; for instance, while Macs are generally acknowledged to be easier to use, if youre a long-time Windows user the first time you sit in front of a Mac, it certainly wont seem that way.
In any case, here follows a list of differentiators if nothing else, these are reasonable arguments as to why you should consider buying a Mac.
1. Macs are actually cheaper in the long run
Sure, you can buy a Windows PC for fewer up-front dollars. But the true cost of ownership should be calculated based on not only the acquisition cost, but the residual value after you sell it or trade it in. Its the difference between those two numbers that really tells you what your computer costs to own. When you calculate the cost of ownership in that way, Macs win easily. All you have to do is compare the value of a Windows PC from, say, three years ago , and compare that to what you can get for your 3-year-old Mac. Its virtually always no contest.
2.;Macs are much easier to buy
Note: We received a message from someone who took umbrage at the above, saying he thought it was incredibly ignorant. We responded with the following, which may or may not appease those of you who share that opinion, but it is our opinion and were sticking by it:
3. In general, when Apple makes assumptions with its software, it gets it right, Microsoft often gets it wrong
What About Apple Silicon
Cupertino is in the process of transitioning its entire Mac lineup from Intel-based processors to an Apple silicon system on a chip . Currently, both the MacBook Air and entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro offer an Apple M1 SoC. However, older MacBook Pro models, including the entire 16-inch lineup, still offers Intel processors inside.
Unless you really indeed the 16-inch MacBook Pro, you should select a MacBook with Apple silicon. It’s the company’s future.

Maybe You Should Wait On Buying That New Mac Then Again Maybe Not
New Apple laptops could be coming this fall, but should you buy a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iMac or Mac Pro now?

In the meantime, choosing the best Mac option for you can be a difficult task.;

As part of its aggressive move away from Intel-powered computers, the company introduced a MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro and Mac Mini desktop using its own M1 processors in late 2020. In April 2021, the smaller of two iMac desktop models was redesigned with a;larger 24-inch screen, an M1 chip and a new, colorful body. The last new Intel-powered Mac to be announced was the Intel Core i9 27-inch iMac in the summer of 2020, which was most notable for adding an excellent 1080p webcam, a version of which is now in the 24-inch iMac.;

Why You Should Trust Us
Andrew Cunningham has been testing, reviewing, and otherwise writing about PCs, Macs, and other gadgets for AnandTech, Ars Technica, and Wirecutter since 2011. He has been building, upgrading, and fixing PCs for more than 15 years, and he spent five of those years in IT departments buying and repairing laptops and desktops as well as helping people buy the best tech for their needs. He has also used every Mac laptop that Apple has released over the past two decades.
Best For Battery Life
Although there isnt a huge amount of difference when it comes to battery life, most Mac laptops come equipped with a minimum of 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing and/or iTunes video streaming.
Beating the others is the all day battery that is included in the 13-inch MacBook Air, with 12 hours available before you need to use a charger. However, as any Mac users knows, the older a laptop gets, the weaker it charges and quicker a charge disappears, so it is always useful to have a power cord handy when you are planning to use a Mac laptop for a prolonged period of time.

If You Need New Ports Badly For A Project
Sometimes, the cost isnt as important as getting the capabilities you need right now. A handy example is the recent upgrade to USB-C ports that many laptops went through. USB-C-only accessories arent directly compatible with older USB ports, especially when it comes to charging, so new accessories that you recently bought may not work with older laptops without a clunky adapter workaround. Thats a sign that its time to get a new laptop, sooner rather than later.
This may be more likely to happen in professional settings, where accessories and devices ordered for business work require certain connections. If your laptop is incompatible with the tools you need to work with, start talking about devoting money to a laptop upgrade.
The Macbook Air: The More Portable Pick
Apple’s smallest laptop is the MacBook Air. It’s a slim, sleek machine that measures 0.63 inch at its thickest point and weighs just 2.8 pounds. The MacBook Air is also Apple’s cheapest laptop, starting at $899 for students and teachers or $999 for the general public. The cheapest and most portable entry point into the macOS ecosystem obviously has enormous appeal.
A low price doesn’t mean the MacBook Air’s screen is low quality, though. Despite the fact that it’s not the highest-resolution 13-inch display you can buy, the LED-backlit panel impresses with its brightness and clarity. The native resolution is 2,560 by 1,600 pixels. The display uses in-plane switching technology, which means that the remarkable picture you see while sitting in front of it doesn’t degrade much if you turn it to show a colleague what you’re working on. Its True Tone feature automatically adapts the color temperature to match ambient lighting conditions, and support for the P3 color gamut means brilliant colors and the ability to perform basic color correcting for photos and videos.
The current version of the MacBook Air sports the same Magic Keyboard you’ll find on the MacBook Pro. It offers a far more comfortable typing experience than previous MacBook Air and MacBook Pro keyboard designs, which suffered from extraordinarily shallow key presses.
