Using a 2-in-1 in tent mode is useful to view recipes, take courses, and watch videos. In tablet mode, you can use them to take notes, read, and play games. As a laptop, you can use them to work on a spreadsheet, online banking, blogging, and various other administrative tasks in addition to all the things a laptop can typically do. You can even attach an external CD/DVD/BLU-RAY drive for movie night. With a compatible pen, you or your kids can draw and write freehand when using the 2-in-1 in tablet or tent mode.

The rest of the specs for convertibles and detachable hybrids generally follow the same lines as more standard laptops and Windows 10 tablets, which means you’ll have to pay more if you want additional speed, fancier features, or a thinner, flashier design.

For example, a system with a fanless Intel Core i3 or Core i5 processor is likely to have excellent battery life and a very thin body. These chips are generally what you will find in detachables. That said, you should expect that these systems will be somewhat less powerful than comparably sized laptops or convertible 2-in-1s, as these low-power mobile processors are designed for cool, quiet operation more so than for blazing speed.

In contrast, a non-detachable 2-in-1 system is more likely to use a more powerful Intel Core i5 or Core i7 with a cooling fan and perhaps even a discrete graphics processor. It will likely be a thicker device, but you’ll have more power to do more-demanding media-creation work or heavy multitasking in the field. As with anything else when computer shopping, it’s all a game of trade-offs and compromises, and we’re here to help you decide which one is for you.

Detachable Tablets: Two Devices In One

Surface Pro 4: Stylish tablet that turns into a laptop ...

A detachable-tablet 2-in-1 is essentially a slate with a keyboard case or a keyboard dock. The dock option is a bit more stable than the keyboard case, but the general idea is the same: You can remove the keyboard portion of the tablet and leave it behind when you desire maximum portability. Microsoft’s various Surface detachables are the vanguard models of this kind.

Windows 10 slate tablets tend to weigh less than 2 pounds on their own, and adding the keyboard case or dock can double the system’s total weight. A tablet with a well-designed keyboard dock attached is functionally indistinguishable from a clamshell laptop, and some detachable docks contain extra battery cells that can greatly extend the amount of time you’re able to work off-plug. Simpler keyboard cases usually lack niceties such as extra battery cells or USB ports, and most will be noticeably physically flexible. But if a keyboard is just an occasional need for you, chances are you won’t mind that much.

The benefit of the keyboard case is that it is thinner and lighter overall than the usual lower half of a laptop or convertible. Detachable-hybrid tablets, however, tend to be top-heavy, because all of the system’s components and batteries, and hence their weight, are necessarily localized in the screen. You’ll want to examine your usage patterns to determine whether holding the PC in your hands and interacting with the touch screen is really right for you.

Hp Elite Dragonfly G2

One of the best laptops weve tested

Reasons to avoid

HPs impressive business laptop is back with its smart design, great battery life, and 2-in-1 prowess. The HP Elite Dragonfly was among the best HP laptops, and its successor is following in its footsteps. Of course, being a follow-up, its more powerful now than its predecessor. Now, the line is touting 11th-gen Intel Core chips, Intel Iris Xe graphics, and now a 4K display, upgrading from its previous Full HD models.

Of course, theres a whole lot more to love here. It might just be as close to being the perfect business laptop as any manufacturer can get, but its also stylish enough to appeal to the more casual users. That is, if they can afford it as this laptop is as expensive as its always been. However, as it is meant for professionals, its definitely worth the investment. Plus, that 2-in-1 form factor, touchscreen functionality and included stylus makes it a better value than its rivals.

How Automatic Tablet Mode Works On Windows 10

If you use a 2-in-1 convertible laptop that can transform from a laptop form factor with a keyboard into a tableteither by detaching a keyboard, folding the screen backwards, or some other physical action, then Windows 10 tablet mode should trigger automatically when you perform that action.

If you dont like this behavior and would like to turn it off, its easy to change in Windows Settings. Simply open Settings and navigate to System > Tablet, then select Dont switch to tablet mode in the drop-down menu.

Once automatic tablet mode is disabled, you can trigger tablet mode manually using the methods below.

Laptop That Turns Into A Tablet

Depending on just exactly what you plan to do with your new machine, this question can be answered either way.

2-in-1’s are ultra versatile and provide the convenience of an on-the-go tablet when you need it with the power of a laptop. There are sacrifices that are usually made to achieve this though, including reducing the internal specs performance and size to accommodate the smaller, more mobile friendly size.

Laptops in general will be more powerful and are best suited if you work for long sessions at a time. They’ll provide a more solid platform with increased power and capabilities, albeit without the easy on-the-go mobile use. That’s not necessarily a problem, as many laptop users sit for extended periods of time during use.

If you’re someone who is on the go constantly but needs a powerful machine to keep up with you, 2-in-1’s will do the trick but expected to spend a bit extra to get a machine that works properly for you.

The first laptop on our list is the Surface Pro 7 by Microsoft. Anyone who is even vaguely familiar with the Surface lineup will know exactly why we have selected it. For those who dont know, its a Windows tablet with a keyboard. Unlike regular tablets, it has a full-fledged processor and other components that you would find in an actual laptop. Many people like to think of it as a laptop in a tablet disguise, which would be an accurate description. If youre looking for a product to provide you with the best experience of both a laptop and a tablet, then you should definitely consider the Surface Pro.

Even in terms of RAM and storage, you are given multiple options. You get 8 GB of RAM with the lower i5 variant while the i7 gets 16 GB. The RAM type is LPDDR4x RAM, so even it is extremely fast and will make your computer feel snappy and responsive. As for storage, you get either 128 GB or 256 GB with the i5 or 256 GB and 512 GB with the i7. The storage form is SSD, so loading times will almost be non-existent. I would recommend getting at least 256 GB unless youre absolutely certain that you wont require more than 128 GB or if you have some form of external storage device.

You can do better if you venture north of $1,000our top premium 2-in-1 pick is the HP Spectre x360 14, while the ThinkBook 14s Yoga is great for small and medium businesses. For around $700, though, it’s hard to beat this configuration of the Flex 5i 14, which claims our Editors’ Choice award for best midrange 2-in-1 convertible.
