Does Your Laptop Support Thunderbolt
Most modern laptops include support for USB Type-C connections. Even recent Microsoft Surface devices, which still rely on the proprietary Surface connector for charging, now offer a single USB Type-C port.
But not all USB-C connections are created equal. There’s no obvious difference between a USB-C port on a laptop that supports Thunderbolt and one that doesn’t . You’ll notice the difference if you try to connect a Thunderbolt dock to a non-Thunderbolt PC, though, or vice versa. In the worst case scenario, you could pay hundreds of dollars for a dock that doesn’t deliver a fraction of the features it should.
For the best results, make sure your dock and laptop support match up properly.

Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock
Elgato has made a name for itself in recent years with a wide range of USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 hub and docking solutions, and the company’s $349.99 Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock is another impressive desktop docking device.
The Pro Dock delivers a whole smorgasbord of ports and slots: a full-size SD card reader, a MicroSD card slot, separate headset-audio and headphone-only jacks, four USB 3.1 ports , a Thunderbolt 3 pass-through, a DisplayPort, and a Gigabit Ethernet jack.
The DisplayPort supports up to 4,096-by-2,160-pixel resolution at 60Hz, while the Thunderbolt 3 port can drive an external monitor at up to 5,120 by 2,880 pixels at 60Hz. However, if you want to use two external monitors at once, both will be limited to 4,096 by 2,160 resolution.
Does The Dock Have Enough Power For Your Laptop
Most of the docks in our guide can deliver power using USB Type-C Power Delivery . But the amount of power might not be enough to keep your laptop fully powered. That’s especially true for large laptops with high-end CPUs and discrete GPUs designed for intensive video and graphics editing chores.
The latest 15- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, for example, ship with 87W and 96W power supplies, respectively. A docking station that maxes out at 60W of USB Type-C PD might have trouble charging one of those models, especially when it’s under a heavy load.
Compare the power requirements for your laptop against the maximum power output of the docking station.

Docks For A Specific Pc Brand
If you bought a name-brand PC, there’s a good chance that the maker of that device has at least one and probably several dock options for you to choose from. The biggest advantage, of course, is that you can expect the two devices to work together properly; and if they don’t, you don’t have to put up with the finger-pointing that can occur when you encounter a conflict between a PC and a third-party peripheral.
This section includes information about docks designed for use with Windows PCs from Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Microsoft. As for Apple, well, let’s get that out of the way first.
Dell Laptop Docking Stations
A Dell laptop docking station is a way to charge your Dell laptop. Users can even continue using their laptop while its charging. A port replicator lets you attach fixed-position compatible accessories and facilitates connecting more devices than would otherwise be possible.
What is a docking station?
A docking station, also called a port replicator, is technically a computing hub. Laptop stations tend to differentiate themselves from basic hubs in many vital ways, including:
- Seating and charging of the laptop.
- Support for monitor displays, including dual monitors.
- Integrating various converters.
- A broad mix and match of connection types.
What is the difference between a universal and proprietary dock?
A universal docking station is as generic as possible to account for a wide selection of laptops. Universal docks tend to connect via a connection or adapter. A proprietary solution, such as a dock by Dell, is specially made for your particular computer, such as a Latitude. If your Latitude laptop has features that set it apart from other laptops, your docking station can take advantage of them in a way that a generic port replicator couldnt.
How do you use a Dell dock?
The docking station for your Dell Latitude or other Dell laptop serves as the basis for your desktop computing. Once its situated, connect a monitor or other display and connect a USB keyboard and USB mouse. You can also connect many other peripherals via USB and other ports, such as:

Are There Enough Of The Right Type Of Ports
It’s tempting to check the specs, count the number of USB ports, and then compare that number against the number of devices you plan to connect. That might work, but you might also find that those ports don’t exactly work as expected.
The biggest disappointment is a USB port that doesn’t offer the ability to charge a mobile device like a smartphone, or charges it more slowly than it should. Check the format of those ports, too, and be prepared to buy adapters or extra cables if you need to plug a USB-A device into a USB-C port, or vice versa

Choose What Closing The Lid Does
You can change this behavior in any version of Windows with a simple settings tweak inside the old pre-Windows 10 Control Panel. Open the Start menu and search for Control Panel. Navigate to Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does. You can also type “Lid” into the Start menu to immediately find this menu.
The “When I close the lid” section presents a drop-down menu with four optionsSleep, Hibernate, Shut down, and Do Nothingbased on the laptop’s power state: on battery or plugged in.
For example, you could set it to Do Nothing when the laptop is plugged in, but select the Sleep option when the computer is on battery power. This allows the closed laptop to continue functioning while it is hooked up to a power source, so you can use it as a desktop alternative without having to deal with the device itself. It will also make sure you won’t accidentally shut the lid and toss the laptop in your backpack while it’s still running, which can generate a lot of dangerous heat.
