What Makes Ryzen Different
From a marketing perspective, AMD has for the first time adopted the now-standard 3-5-7 processor nomenclature to differentiate base units from mid-range and high-performance offerings. Be careful, however. There is some overlap between Ryzen categories, so depending on the specifications, a high-end Ryzen 3 might be faster than a low-end Ryzen 5, in some cases. For more specialized uses there is Ryzen Threadripper and a potentially even more powerful server processor, Epyc, that’s also built upon AMD’s new Zen architecture.
But beyond the marketing, what makes Ryzen different? Compared to earlier AMD processors, Ryzen has several physical advantages:
- Smaller 14nm transistor structure that consumes less power and generates less heat
- Fewer shared resources — making each core more discrete and self-sufficient
- Improved intra-processor links for on-the-fly adjustments to core/thread utilization
- Overclocking capabilities that can unleash additional processor cycles for specific needs

Best Laptop Graphics Cards From Nvidia And Amd In 2021

. Thank you for supporting the work I put into this site!)
Laptops have become very powerful over the years. Gone are the days when the laptops were only used for business/office work or normal work. This is because now you can play the latest high-end games on laptops having good graphics cards. Most of the laptops do not come with graphics cards as they are dependent on onboard or integrated graphics, and those who come with dedicated graphics cards have a different range of GPUs starting from low-end to high-end.
Some laptops with graphics cards come with entry-level GPUs and some come with mid-range to high-end graphics cards or GPUs. Laptops with entry-level graphics cards are good for casual gaming, video editing, watching Full HD and Blu-ray movies. Also, these laptops are relatively cheaper compared to gaming laptops with powerful graphics cards. On the other hand laptops with mid-range to high-end graphics cards are way more powerful and you can enjoy the latest games on mid to high graphics settings at 1080p. What Is Amd Smartshift And Why Does It Benefit Your Laptop
AMD’s SmartShift isn’t something you see in too many laptops, but that’s slowly starting to change.
AMD SmartShift has been around since 2020, but it’s not something that’s discussed too often. That’s partly due to its inclusion in just one laptop during its first year of availability, which in turn is due to the relative rarity of full AMD systems with Ryzen Mobile CPUs and discrete Radeon graphics. SmartShift isn’t as rare as it was just a couple of years ago, and it’s still being improved by AMD with some new announcements at CES 2022.
The TL DR: AMD SmartShift is a proprietary technology for laptops that lets the CPU and discrete GPU work together for increased performance and energy efficiency. Let’s take a closer look at how SmartShift works, what’s coming up next, and where you can find it.

The bigger Zephyrus G15 the follow-up to our current favorite gaming laptop will support the same CPU with up to the RTX 3080 Ti. Outside of Asus, the 16-inch Lenovo Legion 5 Pro for 2022 is one that Im particularly excited to test out. It comes with up to the Ryzen 9 6900HX processor but is sticking with Nvidia for the graphics . Youll be able to get that same high-end processor in Razers 2022 Blade 14, which tops out at the RTX 3080 Ti for graphics. It starts at $1,999.99.
A top-down view of the M17 R5 Ryzen Edition.
Perhaps no company so far is going bigger with AMD than Alienwares M17 R5 Ryzen Edition, a 17-inch gaming laptop that may have considerably faster internals than the options that I listed above. It can be configured up to AMDs Ryzen 9 6980HX processor, with a Radeon RX 6850M XT graphics chip. We still dont know the price for this one, but dont expect it to be affordable in the slightest.

Amd Vs Intel Cpu Overclocking
+3.8% | +2.7% |
As mentioned, you’ll have to pay a premium for Intel’s K-Series chips and purchase a pricey Z-Series motherboard, not to mention splurge on a capable aftermarket cooler , to unlock the best of Intel’s overclocking prowess. However, once you have the necessary parts, Intel’s chips are relatively easy to push to their max, which often tops out at over 5 GHz on all cores with the 11th-Gen Rocket Lake and 12th-Gen Alder Lake processors.
Intel doesn’t allow full overclocking on B- or H-series motherboards, but it has infused memory overclocking into its B560 and H570 chipsets, and that works with any chip that is compatible with the platform, meaning all 10th-Gen Comet Lake, 11th-Gen Rocket Lake, and 11th-Gen Comet Lake Refresh processors. However, these changes only apply to 500-series models. That can provide a big boost to locked chips, like the Core i5-11400 we recently reviewed, and we expect those gains to carry over to Intel’s forthcoming lower-end Alder Lake chips.AMD doesn’t have as much room for manual tuning. In fact, the maximum achievable all-core overclocks often fall a few hundred MHz beneath the chips’ maximum single-core boost. That means all-core overclocking can actually result in losing performance in lightly-threaded applications, albeit a minor amount.
Update: The above sections have been altered to include Intel’s Alder Lake. We’ll update the sections below with Alder Lake-specific commentary soon. Stay tuned.

What’s The Amd Ryzen Naming Structure
It’s just as confusing as Intel’s. The first three Ryzens are:
- Ryzen 7 1700
- Ryzen 7 1700X
- Ryzen 7 1800X
So the structure is Ryzen Y ZZZZ, where Y is the family and Z is the more specific model number.
Just as with Intel’s Core i series, 3 is the entry level, while 5 is mid-level and 7 is for enthusiasts and professionals.
Amds Ryzen 6000 Designed For Power Efficiency

Every design has performance changes and power changes, Hallock said. But in Zen 3+, we didnt make pipeline changes. We didnt make instruction set changes. Everything you see in terms of performance increases is power derived and were extracting a lot of that additional performance per watt.
AMD talked up the traditional performance metrics in January, but shifted to an emphasis on power in a briefing with reporters in advance of todays launch. Here, theres one tweak that PC enthusiasts should know about: AMDs new Power Management Framework.
Youre probably aware of Windows 10s power slider, and the similar drop-down power mode menu option within Windows 11. Put simply, the new Power Management Framework tweaks that, taking some of the control out of your hands and giving it back to an algorithm within the firmware that will ship with AMDs Ryzen 6000 Mobile processor. That firmware will look at various signals from the laptopperformance, power, how warm the laptop is getting under your hands, the acousticsand dial the laptops clock speed either down or up, depending on the algorithms dictates. AMD executives said that the PMF will engage automatically at Windows 11s default settings. However, you can manually turn it off by shifting the Windows 11 drop-down menu to either a best performance or best battery life setting, they said.

Best Gaming: Razer Blade 14 Gaming Laptop
The Razer Blade 14, the company’s first-ever AMD Ryzen laptop is an absolute monster. It follows the traditional Blade design, but size-wise slots between the Blade Stealth and Blade 15. You get a 14-inch 165Hz 1440p display, a Ryzen 9 5900HX, and either an NVIDIA RTX 3070 or 3080. Razer’s traditional features such as Chroma are here, too, as is plenty of connectivity and an innovative cooling solution. The Blade 14 is one of the most powerful gaming laptops available today.
Amd Vs Intel Productivity And Content Creation Performance
In the non-gaming performance battle of AMD vs Intel CPUs, Intel’s Alder Lake chips have also made great strides against AMD’s finest and offer a superior price-to-performance ratio in a broad swath of workloads. That said, AMD’s highest-end chip takes the outright win in terms of the ultimate performance in threaded productivity and content creation applications in a few workloads. That comes courtesy of its copious slathering of cores, threads, and cache on its flagship Ryzen 9 5950X. However, those wins come at the expense of a much higher price point, and it isn’t enough to justify the premium.
Winner: Intel. For professionals on the hunt for performance in content creation and productivity applications, the winner of AMD vs Intel CPUs goes to Intel on the strength of its x86 hybrid architecture. This new design blends two types of cores to create a single powerhouse processor architecture that’s just as agile in single-threaded work as it is powerful in threaded applications.

Differences Between Amd And Intel Laptops You Need To Know
When it comes to the world of laptops, there are really only two options out there in terms of processors. Intel and AMD, also known as team Blue and team Red respectively.
For a very long time, there were very distinct differences between Intel and AMD CPUs. Intel for almost a decade or even more was considered the king manufacturer of laptop processors, and AMD was mostly known for running too hot. However, its 2020 now, and a lot of these things have changed. The performance differences between similar processors in the Intel and AMD lineups are not quite as distinct as they used to be anymore.
These days, you can opt for either processor and still be sure that you will be getting top notch performance and descent temperatures. This article, therefore, is aimed at helping you identify major differences between AMD and Intel powered laptops to help with your buying decision.
1. Price
When it comes to pricing, no matter what tier of laptop processors you are going for, low-end, mid-tier, or premium. AMD-based laptops have always been the cheaper version compared to similar Intel-based laptops. The reason for this is that AMD has always been focused on making sure that they captured consumers on the lower budget end.
2. Core Count
Intel processors on the other hand, have higher clock speeds and have the potential for overclocking which makes them the best option for high-end gaming laptops.
3. Gaming vs Productivity
4. Drivers
6. Thunderbolt 3 support
What Laptops Have Amd Smartshift
The biggest downside of AMD’s SmartShift technology since its inception has been the lack of implementation. In 2020, the only laptop with both an AMD CPU and AMD GPU the basic requirements for SmartShift was Dell’s G5 15 Special Edition. Interestingly enough, the PlayStation 5 employs SmartShift between its AMD CPU and GPU. SmartShift is also compatible with Linux.
AMD has made it a bit easier to find laptops using both its CPU and GPU with the AMD Advantage naming convention. SmartShift Eco is expected in AMD Advantage laptops later this year, likely coinciding with the new Ryzen 6000 Mobile CPUs.
There are now a few more laptops you can check out if you’re interested in AMD SmartShift, and the number is growing. The HP Omen 16 Advantage Edition Ryzen 7 5800H CPU and Radeon RX 6600M discrete GPU is currently available, as is the ASUS ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition with Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU and Radeon RX 6800M discrete GPU. The Lenovo Legion 5 can also be configured with both AMD CPU and GPU, as can MSI’s Alpha and Delta performance laptops. Keep an eye out for the launch of more full AMD systems in the next few months, and have a look at our collection of the best gaming laptops for other options.

What Is An Amd Processor
Related Topics
An Advanced Micro Devices processor is a computer processor designed or manufactured by AMD, an American semiconductor and technology company. AMD primarily produces central processing units intended to compete against offerings from its much larger rival Intel®. An AMD processor can be used with the same software as an Intel® processor, but not the same motherboard. A new generation of AMD processor also aims to combine a CPU and graphics processor into a single chip.
Modern processors from both Intel® and AMD can trace their lineage to the Intel® 8086, a CPU used in the original IBM® PC. The set of instructions and commands that software programs passed to the 8086 CPU became a standard for the PC industry. This set of instructions, known today as the x86 instruction set, is supported by virtually all computer operating systems and CPUs found in PCs. This means an AMD processor can be used with the same software as an Intel® processor, because both were designed to be compatible with the x86 instruction set.
