Graphics And Battery Life Testing
One of the main benefits of Intel’s Tiger Lake platform is the switch from the older Iris Plus to Iris Xe graphics. This improvement actually has only a small impact in our graphics testing, which uses the Windows-only 3DMark and Superposition game simulations to render sequences of highly detailed, gaming-style 3D graphics that emphasize particles and lighting.
We run two different 3DMark subtests, Sky Diver and Fire Strike, which are suited to different types of systems. Both are DirectX 11 benchmarks, but Sky Diver is more suited to laptops and midrange PCs, while Fire Strike is more demanding and made for high-end PCs to strut their stuff. The results are proprietary scores.
Like 3DMark, the Superposition test renders and pans through a detailed 3D scene and measures how the system copes. In this case, it’s rendered in the company’s eponymous Unigine engine, offering a different 3D workload scenario than 3DMark for a second opinion on the machine’s graphical prowess.
The Iris Xe laptops show a slight advantage over their Iris Plus counterparts, but the difference isn’t remarkable. It’s also much less of an advantage than what is offered by an entry-level gaming GPU like the Nvidia processor in the Blade Stealth 13. The bottom line for graphics output is that the XPS 13 will be able to handle pretty much anything you throw at it except for intensive 3D games, which require a dedicated GPU to run smoothly.

Inspiron Bang For Your Buck
The XPS laptops are more glamorous, but the Inspirons are the meat of Dell’s consumer laptop range. Ultimately what you’re getting here is value, whether that’s at the super-low price budget laptop end of the spectrum, or the slightly more expensive but still way short of the XPS price point. The Inspiron range is where most Dell buyers will find the right laptop for them.
Inspiron is also a great place to find a 2-in-1 laptop, especially if you like the look of the XPS 13 2-in-1 but the price tag is a bit much for you.
The drawback to all this is that the Inspiron range is massive. Fortunately, we have a full explainer on what each different sub-series within the Inspiron range is all about. Our favorite, though, is the Inspiron 14 5000 series which is a sweet spot in the range for price and performance while also boasting a pretty stunning design.
Dell Xps 13 Vs Dell Xps 1: Display And Audio
The XPS 13 and XPS 15 both share the biggest upgrade from their predecessors: a truly 4-sided InfinityEdge display that cuts down the bottom bezel for a truly seamless screen. The XPS 13 has a 91.5% screen-to-body ratio while the XPS 15 has a ratio of 92.9% — both of these panels are incredibly immersive, so youll just have to decide how big you want yours.
Most Dell XPS 13 and 15 models get plenty bright, too. On our lab tests, our 1080p Dell XPS 13 registered 417 on our light meter, while its 4K counterpart was much dimmer at 301 nits. Our 4K Dell XPS 15 turned in a very impressive 434 nits, though weve yet to test out a 1080p version of Dells larger laptop.
The XPS 13 and XPS 15 both have solid audio, but the XPS 15s larger, top-firing speakers deliver louder and fuller sound. While the XPS 13 got muffled at higher volumes, the XPS 15 delivered rich bass and crisp vocals loud enough to fill a living room.

Srams Drams And The Microprocessor
Intel’s first products were memory and random-access integrated circuits, and Intel grew to be a leader in the fiercely competitive , , and markets throughout the 1970s. Concurrently, Intel engineers , , and invented Intel’s first . Originally developed for the Japanese company to replace a number of in a calculator already produced by Busicom, the was introduced to the mass market on November 15, 1971, though the microprocessor did not become the core of Intel’s business until the mid-1980s.
In 1983, at the dawn of the personal computer era, Intel’s profits came under increased pressure from Japanese memory-chip manufacturers, and then-president Andy Grove focused the company on microprocessors. Grove described this transition in the book . A key element of his plan was the notion, then considered radical, of becoming the single source for successors to the popular microprocessor.
Until then, the manufacture of complex integrated circuits was not reliable enough for customers to depend on a single supplier, but Grove began producing processors in three geographically distinct factories, and ceased licensing the chip designs to competitors such as . When the PC industry boomed in the late 1980s and 1990s, Intel was one of the primary beneficiaries.

Competition Antitrust And Espionage
By the end of the 1990s, performance had outstripped software demand for that CPU power. Aside from high-end server systems and software, whose demand dropped with the end of the “”, consumer systems ran effectively on increasingly low-cost systems after 2000. Intel’s strategy of producing ever-more-powerful processors and obsoleting their predecessors stumbled, leaving an opportunity for rapid gains by competitors, notably AMD. This, in turn, lowered the profitability of the processor line and ended an era of unprecedented dominance of the PC hardware by Intel.
Intel’s dominance in the microprocessor market led to numerous charges of violations over the years, including investigations in both the late 1980s and in 1999, and civil actions such as the 1997 suit by and a patent suit by . Intel’s market dominance combined with Intel’s own hardball legal tactics made it an attractive target for litigation, but few of the lawsuits ever amounted to anything.
A case of arose in 1995 that involved both Intel and AMD. , an formerly employed both at AMD and at Intel’s plant, was arrested for attempting in 1993 to sell the and Pentium designs to AMD and to certain foreign powers. Gaede videotaped data from his computer screen at Intel and mailed it to , which immediately alerted Intel and authorities, resulting in Gaede’s arrest. Gaede was convicted and sentenced to 33 months in prison in June 1996.

Dell Xps 15 Oled Ports
The XPS 15 is one of the few remaining laptops with a full SD card slot. But that godsend for photographers and videographers comes at great expense- four USB ports instead of three when compared to Apples MacBook Pro lineup!
On the left side of your laptop, next to a lock slot are two Thunderbolt 4 inputs for charging or connecting peripherals. Flip over and youll find USB 3.2 Type-C input alongside a full SD card slot as well as a headphone jack on this side.
Id take the card reader over a fourth Thunderbolt port . The glaring omission on both laptops is USB Type-A inputs although Dell includes an adaptor as the consultation.
Dell Xps 13 Keyboard And Touchpad
The latest XPS 13 keyboard is a joy to type on, with smooth, bouncy keys that allowed me to work comfortably for hours at a time. I jammed away at Dells keyboard at a speedy 104 words per minute with near-perfect accuracy on the 10FastFingers typing test, and never felt any discomfort throughout.
The XPS 13s 4.7 x 3.2 touchpad was just as intuitive, allowing me to easily scroll through web pages, pinch to zoom and perform multi-finger gestures without any resistance. Dells latest laptop features 9% larger keycaps and a 17% larger touchpad than the previous generation, so youre getting even more real estate for hammering out documents and emails all day long.

The Latest Update To One Of The Windows Worlds Best
I am sitting in a conference room with a bevy of laptops in front of meso many that theyre blocking my view of the monitor where Im about to videoconference with some of the people who created them. With a variety of case stylings, colors, materials, and approaches to fundamental design decisions, they are not exactly a matched set. But theyre all iterations of a specific computer: Dells XPS 13.
The disparate models represent a decades worth of evolution and lead up to the new XPS 13 Plus, which Dell is unveiling today and plans to ship this spring, with pricing still to be announced. Like its predecessors, it squeezes a 13 display into a surprisingly compact case by shrinking the bezel around the display. But beyond that, whats new is really newnot just for the XPS 13 line, but also for laptops in general.
For one thing, its keyboard flouts the industrys recent design conventions by giving you oversized keys without any space between them. It also does away with the physical function keys along the top, which have been replaced with a strip of virtual keysnot a tiny screen like Apples late, unlamented Touch Bar, but a touch-sensitive area with illuminated key indicators. As for the touchpad, well, there isnt one. Or, to be precise, its another touch-sensitive area thats been completely integrated into the palm rest, with no line of demarcation.
