Why An Ssd Helps Speed Up Your Computer

How To Tell What Is Slowing Down Your Computer

The key difference between a traditional hard drive and a solid state drive is the technology behind it. An HDD mechanically moves an actuator arm across a spinning platter to find each portion of data. An SDD, however, accesses the data digitally with flash memory chips. This allows SSDs to retrieve data like documents, images, and videos more quickly while using less power.

Portable SSDs such as the Crucial X8 are fairly new version of solid-state drives. Portable SSDs offer all the benefits of internal SSDs without the need to swap out the drive inside your computer. Plus, they can be used with multiple systems and devices.

Use Crucial® Advisor or System Scanner tool below to find the right SSD to speed up your system.

Some Web Browsers Are Resource Hogs

Your web browser could be the culprit, especially if you’ve lost count of the number of windows and tabs you have open. Each browser window and tab takes up memory and processing power and, over time, that will begin to slow down your PC.

You can view a breakdown of extensions and tabs that could be to blame in Task Manager by clicking on the arrow next to your browser’s name. Alternatively, if you use Chrome, it has a built-in task manager of its own. Launch it by pressing Shift+Esc while using Chrome, or click on the menu button > More Tools> Task manager.

If you find that your browser is often causing your PC to slow to a crawl, try a different browser or keep an eye on how many tabs or windows you have open at a given time.

Pausing OneDrive sync can speed up your PC.

Upgrade Ram & Hard Drive

Lowering the amount of workload your computer needs to do may not be the most practical solution. Perhaps you truly need to have those 10-20 tabs active on your browser. You may also not have any more files to delete after clearing out your folders.

If so, then perhaps its not about reducing your computers workload but increasing its capacity. Hence, what you would need to do is upgrade your computers RAM and/or hard drive. Most computers and programs nowadays require at least 8GB of RAM for base models. Hence, if youre using an old device with 4GB of RAM, then it might not be enough for modern-day tasks.

What youd need to do is upgrade your RAM if thats possible considering your current system. However, there wont be much you can do if your computers RAM isnt upgradeable. This is especially prominent in laptops with components soldered onto the motherboard. If you need more RAM in that case, then you might be forced to upgrade your computer altogether. Check our RAM buying guide for suggestions on which RAM stick to get for your computer.

On the other hand, you can also choose to upgrade your hard drive. Most new computers nowadays are already using a Solid State Drive to store data. Back then, it wasnt always practical to have this on a PC because of the price. However, its becoming more practical to recommend an SSD upgrade due to cheaper SSDs entering the market.

Run A Reset Every Now And Again

Just like your programs, you should also keep Windows and macOS up to date at all times. Microsoft and Apple make this difficult to avoid, but you can make sure youre on the latest version of your operating system through Update & Security in Windows Settings, or Software Update in macOS System Preferences.

Something else to consider is regularly resetting your computer and returning it to its factory fresh state. This process is easy, but itll eat up some of your timeit wipes out all but the bare bones of your operating system, so youll need to backup all your files and reinstall all your programs afterward. But In doing that, a full reset also clears out redundant data, gets programs back to their original state, and removes all bloat and clutter from your machine. It may sound like an extreme alternative, but its often worth an hour or two of inconvenience just to get a clean slate.

On your Windows computer, head to Update & Security, then Recovery. Microsoft has full instructions you can refer to if you get lost along the way. Apple also has a complete guide to help you in this process, which starts by rebooting your Mac while holding down Cmd+R, then run the Disk Utility from the list that appears.

    Defragment Your Hard Drive

Over time, files on your hard drive become fragmented. As your computer now has to check in multiple places for the pieces, it can run more slowly. The term defragment sounds a little dramatic, but it basically means putting those files back together so your system can run more efficiently.

In fact, its something that Windows 10, 8, and 7 do automatically on a set schedule. The default schedule is once per week, but you can go in and manually run it if you suspect theres an issue.

First, its important to note that you only need to do this if your computer uses a traditional mechanical Hard Disk Drive . A Solid State Drive works differently from an HDD, and there is no need for defragmentation. If you have both, only defragment the HDD.

Go to My Computer and right-click the hard drive though you may have renamed it). Then go to Properties> Tools and under Optimize and defragment drive, click Optimize.

Youll then get an Optimize Drives screen popup.

Note that in the above screenshot, all of the drives are SSD. These do not need to be defragmented. As in the image, Analyze will be grayed out for SSD drives, but will be available for hard drives.

Select an HDD drive and click Analyze to see how fragmented it is. A good rule of thumb would be to keep it below five percent. If its above, you can click Optimize to defragment the disk.

Windows 7: Look for Disk Defragmenter using the search bar and select an HDD under Current status.

  • In the Norton product main window, click Settings.

5 Things That Are Slowing Your PC Down

Doing a trillion things at once is exactly why we have computers but, at some point, your little bundle of artificial intelligence is going to falter. Your computer’s ability to run multiple programs at the same time hinges in part on its RAM , which allows it to switch from processing one program to another with seeming fluidity, but if the demands of the open programs are outstripping your computer’s memory and processing power, you’ll notice a slowdown.

What Can Be Done About It

Alright, fine. Youve run through the checklists and youve determined your PC is just slow. Now what?

Finding hardware love in the time of coronavirus requires being willing to spend more money than usual in some cases. If you want to buy a consumer GPU for gaming, its a bad time for doing so. You can expect to pay 1.5x MSRP or higher at the moment. This is better than the 3x MSRP cards were selling for earlier this year, but its not a situation anyone regards as good.

If you are attempting to upgrade your general-purpose PC, look at two characteristics: RAM and storage. If you have an old machine stuck on a spinning hard drive, check into whether it can be upgraded to an SSD. Even some laptops can be thusly equipped, though whether your system qualifies depends on its storage interface and how user-accessible it is. While upgrading such a system is out of the scope of this article, there are options.

The difference between a RAM upgrade and an SSD upgrade for an older system is this: RAM will help you if your problem is that you dont have enough RAM. Trying to run an application on 1GB of RAM if it needs at least 3GB to run well will lead to drive paging and a lot of slowdowns with erratic overall performance. If you already have enough RAM, though, more RAM wont necessarily help. 4GB of RAM is quite small for a new machine these days, but a 4GB machine should still be capable of running web apps, word processing, and other basic tasks without a problem.
