Samsung Galaxy Book Flex Alpha
Display: QLED 13.3 | Screen Resolution: FullHD | CPU: Intel Core i5-2300 | GPU: Integrated | RAM: 8 GB | Storage: 256 GB SSD | Battery Life: 18.5 hrs | Weight: 2.62 lbs / 1.18 kg
REASONS TO BUY
- Only 256 GB of storage
- Stylus is not included
Our Rating: 9.4/10
So far all of the entries on our list have tried to make a laptop into a tablet. The Samsung Galaxy Book Flex Alpha is the first one that appears to have started from the direction of a tablet and worked its way over to a laptop.
Even though it still uses Windows 10 for its OS, it feels like its meant to spend a lot more time as a tablet, with occasional breaks in computer mode to hammer out a long-form email.
Starting with the display, the Galaxy Book Flex Alpha is only 13 inches but still has an FHD QLED touchscreen display, which means pictures and video are going to look insanely sharp.
Its only a little bit smaller than the other laptops on this list, but you will start to notice how small it is if you frequently switch between this and a desktop or even a larger laptop. The keyboard especially can start to feel cramped if you plan on doing a lot of typing.
It does still have a quad-core processor, the Intel Core i5-2300, which is a lot more power than we expected for a machine of this size. Even though the max frequency is only 3.1 GHz, the base rate is 2.8 GHz, so this laptop is going to feel quick and responsive at all times.
Microsoft Surface Pro : The King Of Windows 2
Price: From £999 |
The Surface Pro has been the flag-bearer for the 2-in-1 sector ever since it was first released but, recently, Microsoft has left it to gather dust somewhat and, despite internal upgrades, it hasn’t seen a redesign for seven years.
The Surface Pro 8 changes all that. It has an overhauled chassis that’s slimmer and sleeker than before. Plus, there’s a new Signature Keyboard and Surface Slim Pen 2 that sees the stylus stored and charged in a neat slot above the keyboard.
The core strengths are still there, though. The 3:2 touchscreen is sublime, the keyboard a delight to type on and, of course, Microsoft has updated the internals to include Intel 11th-gen silicon.
We’re not mad keen on the £160 extra Microsoft charges for the keyboard but that seems to be the way of things amongst premium 2-in-1 devices these days. If you can stomach that, this is the best Windows 2-in-1 you can buy and should be at the very top of your shortlist.
Key specs Processor: Intel Core i5-1135G7 or i7-1185G7 RAM: 8GB, 16GB or 32GB Storage: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB or 1TB SSD Screen resolution: 2,880 x 1,920 Weight: 890g , 1.2kg

Though theres room for improvement when it comes to the trackpad and keyboard, the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 strikes an impressive balance between power, convenience, style and affordability, making it one of the most attractive 2-in-1 laptops around.

REASONS TO BUY
- Doesnt come with a stylus
Our Rating: 9.4/10
Dells Inspiron 14 is another businesslike 2-in-1 laptop, though it manages to look a bit more sleek and stylish. Like all Dell laptops, you have a solid baseline of performance and the assurance that youre getting exactly what it says on the box.
The Inspiron 14 is a 14-inch 2-in-1 laptop. It offers an FHD screen, with a 60Hz refresh rate. This is the most common resolution youll find in todays laptops, and on a smaller screen like this will still provide clear, sharp pictures.
And on top of that, the display also features a very precise touch-screen which makes any kind of creative activity a breeze. Unfortunately, the laptop does not come with a stylus but to be fair, its priced noticeably below the $1000 mark, so you should still have room in your budget.
In terms of performance, the Inspiron 14 is powered by an Intel Core i7-1165G7 CPU. The i7-1165G7 is a four-core processor, with a max frequency of 4.7 GHz. Thats one of the fastest processors youll find in a laptop under $1000 and will make individual tasks and even more demanding applications extremely quick to respond.
Speaking of portability, the Inspiron 14 is actually slightly heavier than the Flex 5, at 3.4 pounds, but is thinner, coming in at only 0.71 inches .

A Standout In A Crowded Field
The market for premium Windows laptops is ultracompetitive, with Dell, Asus, Acer, HP, Lenovo, and other companies updating their flagship models frequentlysometimes more than once per year. The XPS 13 2-in-1 is up against similarly excellent convertible laptops with 13-inch screens, among them the HP Spectre x360 13 and the Asus ZenBook Flip S. Several of these have been updated with Intel’s 11th Generation Tiger Lake Core processors or their AMD equivalents, the Ryzen 4000 series.
I’ll get into why the XPS 13 2-in-1 rises to the top of this field below, but the first question shoppers should consider is whether they need a convertible laptop or the also-excellent conventional clamshell-style XPS 13. The main difference between the two is the 2-in-1’s 360-degree rotating hinge. This lets you use it not only as a laptop, but it also allows you to prop it up on your desk like an easel or tent , or use the system in your lap as a tablet. In these modes, your main interaction with the laptop is via its touch screen. Fingers or Dell’s optional digital stylus can be used to write, draw, and manipulate onscreen elements, while the pop-up virtual keyboard built into Windows 10 serves as a means of typing.

Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 Review: Battery Life And Heat
- Lasts for 12 hours
- Runs a tad hotter than we’d like
The Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 lasted for 11 hours and 59 minutes on the Toms Guide battery life test, which tasks the laptop with surfing the web over Wi-Fi with the screen set to 150 nits of brightness.
This is less than the previous iterations impressive 13 and a half hours of tested battery life. With that said, this laptop still lasts over an hour longer than the Surface Laptop Studio .
In our standard heat test, which involves running a heat gun over the laptop after streaming 15 minutes of full HD video on it, we found the hottest point to be on the center underside of the 2-in-1, which peaked at 97.7 degrees Fahrenheit. In contrast, the Surface Laptop Studio and Galaxy Pro Book 360 run much cooler.
We generally consider temperatures over 95 degrees as being uncomfortable. Since this laptop runs 2 degrees hotter than we’d like, we recommend keeping it on a desk or other solid surface instead of your lap.

Our Rating: 9.4/10
ASUS and Acer have a lot in common, beyond just the similarity in names. They compete in a lot of the same markets, often with the same basic strategies.
ASUS computers tend to be versatile and a good value for the money, though ASUS is often more willing to go to extremes, either with super-premium offerings or rock bottom budget builds while still being worth the money at either end.
The VivoBook Flip 14 is right in the middle of that spectrum. Its probably not going to blow you away, but it does have a solid level of performance for the price tag.
Once again, we have a 14-inch FHD touchscreen display and an included flash drive/stylus combo as part of your purchase of this laptop. If anything, thats quite an added value because the flash drive marks a 50% increase in storage over the base laptop.
Speaking of storage, thats one of the biggest drops youll notice as we move down the ladder. The VivoBook Flip 14 only has 128GB of SSD storage. Its enough to get by, but youll need to be a lot more diligent about your storage in ways that you probably wouldnt have to on a 512GB or even a 256GB machine.
Other than that, theres not a lot of surprises. The webcam is a standard 720p, and the nicest thing you could say about the speakers is that they work.
Spectral Analysis: Sleek Svelte And Stylish
The Spectre x360 14 is an Intel Evo laptop, so it flaunts the chipmaker’s latest innovations including rapid wake, Thunderbolt 4 ports, and an 11th Generation “Tiger Lake” processor with Iris Xe integrated graphics. The $1,299.99 base model at HP.com combines Core i5 power with 8GB of memory, a 256GB solid-state drive, and a 1,920-by-1,280-pixel touch screen. One of HP’s Sure View Reflect privacy screens is optional a rechargeable tilt pen and carrying sleeve are standard.
Our test unit, $1,699.99 from Best Buy , steps up to an OLED touch panel with 3,000-by-2,000-pixel resolution and 100% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut, as well as a quad-core, 2.8GHz Core i7-1165G7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD bolstered by 32GB of Intel Optane Memory. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth are onboard, though users who roam far from hotspots will be sad there’s no WWAN option.

Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 7 Review: Ports
- Only four available ports
The Yoga 9i keeps things minimal when it comes to ports. Youll find a power button, a USB-C port and a headphone/mic combo jack on the devices right side. A USB-A port and two Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C ports are on the left.
Ports are placed as far back on the sides as possible. That means you wont have to worry about cables getting in the way while youre working. You could say this laptop doesnt have enough ports, but considering how you can pair optional devices like keyboards and mice via Bluetooth, I dont think this is an issue.
Lenovo Thinkbook 14s Yoga
An excellent 2-in-1
Reasons to avoid
Lenovos latest release, the ThinkBook 14S Yoga, is a solid and affordable convertible that comes with some great features and terrific performance. Even though admittedly, it isnt perfect, theres a lot to love here, starting with its great price-to-performance ratio. Youll appreciate the specs behind that power that 11th-gen Intel Core chip and Intel Iris Xe graphics inside will ensure that itll see you through even arduous tasks. And, although that coveted 2-in-1 design may come standard on every hybrid, for example, its garaged pen is not, making it a boon to those who tend to lose small peripherals. Plus, its webcam shutter is there to protect your privacy.
Sadly, that battery life is no match to the competition. It falls just shy of the nine hour mark, which means that you should take your charger with you if youre clocking in a full work or school day. Still, for the price youre paying, this is among the best 2-in-1 laptops out there.

A Cheap Laptop With Standout Build
The Yoga C740 is as straightforward as a laptop can get. It has a sturdy aluminum build and perfectly fine 10th Gen Intel processors. We were pleasantly surprised by the devices audio the upward-firing speakers on the sides of the keyboard deliver a nice surround-sound experience. The keyboard and touchpad are both quite comfortable to use. Theres not much to complain about and not much to enthusiastically praise if youre looking for a sub-$800 Windows laptop with a well-made aluminum chassis and a sturdy frame, youre looking for the Yoga.
The C740 is a year old now, but that means you can get it at very affordable prices. Were looking forward to reviewing its successor, the Yoga 7i, shortly in the future.

Lenovo Flex 5 13 The Best Budget Convertible
The Lenovo Flex 5 13 is a Chromebook, thus a different and potentially controversial pick.
Its very important to understand what a Chromebook is, what it can do, and how it compares to a Windows laptop, and weve explained it thoroughly in this article. In a few words, Chromebooks are excellent for browsing, email, text-editing, video and music streaming and other activities that you do online. However, theyre crippled without Internet access, and cant normally run the specialized software and games you get on Windows. They can emulate Windows/Linux apps to some extent, but its not their strength, thats why you shouldnt get a Chromebook if you plan to run those kinds of applications.
On the other hand, Chromebooks are snappier, easier to use, and safer with everyday tasks than their Windows counterparts within the same budget. They also last longer on a charge and resume from sleep much quicker, which enhances the overall experience.
