If youd prefer a more traditional Chromebook with a clamshell form factor, the $329 Acer Chromebook Spin 713 is an affordable option thats all-around excellent. It has a gorgeous 3:2 display that delivers a sharp picture and bright, vibrant colors with plenty of vertical space. The screen alone would make the Chromebook Spin 713 a standout, but it has a number of other strengths as well, including a great keyboard, all-day battery life, and a comprehensive port selection, including an HDMI, in addition to USB-C, USB-A, and a microSD slot.

The Final Word On The Best Cheap Laptops
If you dont know what youre looking for, the world of laptops, even cheap ones, can be dizzying with so many options to choose from. As always, its wise to check out some floor models and get a feel for what the physical interaction with your laptop will be like, as youll be spending possibly hundreds of hours with it. If you need a nudge, I recommend the Acer Aspire 5its what I use and Im quite happy with it even if its never going to be considered impressive. Or try the Lenovo Yoga 7i. Both are cheap enough and high enough quality that youll doubtlessly be impressed with the value your dollar brought.

Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3i Keyboard And Touchpad
Typing on the IdeaPad Gaming 3is shallow keys wasnt as unpleasant as I expected, as each key delivered a somewhat clicky feedback. The keyboard was comfortable to type on thanks to the way it dips into the chassis and the texture of the palm rests below.
I sped through 77 words per minute on the 10fastfingers.com typing test, which is just short of my current 78-wpm average. The keys felt pleasantly heavy to click on, but would have benefited from more key travel.
Unfortunately, the keyboard doesnt have any RGB-key lighting. Instead, it is stuck with one color: a light blue, which matches the font of the keyboard. The color isnt bad, but when the font of the keyboard matches the backlighting, it tends to look gross .
The touchpad was pleasantly soft and smooth and offered a decent click on top of that. Windows 10 gestures, like two-finger scrolling and three-finger tabbing, worked well thanks to the Windows Precision drivers.
Is It Cheaper To Build Or Buy Pc
It is always going to be more expensive to build a budget gaming PC than it will be to buy one, since manufacturers will get OEM pricing on components, which will really make a difference on the lower end of the price scale.
But pre-built PCs are often built with the careful mix of components to maximize performance at that price point. This often means that if you want to upgrade one component, you might need to upgrade other components along with it, which can make upgrading the PC a more expensive proposition down the road.

Gtx 10 Series Gaming Laptops
The latest batch of mobile gamer rigs have full-on desktop GPUs in the build, qualifying them as VR-ready. Mobile gaming rigs with GTX 980 desktop cards hit market in the generation prior. Budget-minded gamers should check out SKUs with a GTX 1060 for VR gaming.
Lower-tier mobile gaming rigs use M-class NVIDIA cards, which are lighter in weight, energy consumption, heat emission, and performance compared to their desktop counterparts.
What about laptops with SLI? High-end gaming laptops have SLI graphics card configurations, NVIDIA jargon for connecting two or more graphics cards to a single motherboard. Capable of pushing pixels at 60+ fps onto ultra-high definition displays, elite models like MSI GTX 1070SLI and GTX 1080SLI laptops run two full-on desktop GPUs and command over $3,500!
If youre looking for SLI laptops under $1,000 check for refurbished deals. The prices get close to that mark for dual GTX 970M cards.
Are there any gaming laptops under 500? Tight-budgeted gamers find value in refurbished machines on sale under $500. They boast modest but legit gaming specsGTX 950M GPU and a 15.6-inch, 768-pixel display. Use the filters on the left side bar to specify price range, and usually a handful of choices will be present under $500.

Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3i Ports
On the left side, theres the power jack, an RJ45 Ethernet port, an HDMI port, one USB Type-A port, one USB Type-C port, a headphone jack, a Novo hole and a power indicator. Meanwhile, the right side is home to only one USB Type-A port.
Limitations You Can Live With
Naturally, a budget laptop is one thats more affordable than cutting-edge machines, and in the majority of cases, a lower price means less-powerful internal hardware. Thats not a bad thing. For example, if you spend most of your computer time browsing the web or watching movies, chances are you dont need the latest-generation processor or an ultra-powerful video card. You can save a lot of money by finding a budget laptop that makes reasonable compromises.
As youre shopping for budget laptops, consider the most common hardware compromises youll encounter.
- Video hardware: Most budget laptops either use underpowered graphics processing units , or they power their video by sharing resources with the main processor . In these cases, video on the laptop will be adequate, but thats about it. Watching Netflix will be fine, but your laptop will struggle with more intense video tasks such as playing video games and editing videos.
“If youre thinking about buying a budget laptop with an 11-inch screen, make sure the diminutive size isnt too small for your hands. Some users complain that there isnt enough room to comfortably type on the corresponding keyboard. “

Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3i Design
The Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3is Onyx Black chassis is unassuming. I wouldnt have guessed it was a gaming laptop at first glance due to the lack of any symbols or icons apart from a simple Lenovo logo in the top left corner. Whats unique about the design is that instead of featuring a simple square shape, the corners curve slightly inwards, and the lid ever so gently curves downward, like the hood of a car.
Unfortunately, the interior isnt as discreet due to the light blue keyboard font mixed with the light blue backlighting. The power button is centered just above the keyboard, and theres a blue IdeaPad Gaming logo on the hinge. While the bottom and top bezel are a little thicker than Id like, the side bezels are pleasantly narrow. Surprisingly, the webcam is not only above the screen, it also features a privacy shutter.
At 4.8 pounds and 14.13 x 9.83 x 0.98 inches, the IdeaPad Gaming 3i is relatively slim for a 15-inch laptop. The HP Gaming Pavilion 15-dk0046nr , Acer Nitro 5 and Dell G5 15 SE are all heavier than the IdeaPad.
Should I Get A Gaming Laptop Or A Gaming Pc
The primary difference between a gaming laptop and a gaming PC is portability. If you want a gaming computer to set up at a battle station, never to be moved again, then you should probably spring for a gaming PC deal instead. Since gaming PCs are bigger, they can hold more hardware, use bigger fans, and be easily customized. Laptops have the advantage of moving with you. To that end, a gaming laptop can be more than just a gaming laptop. You can take it to lecture classes for notes or use it as a work computer.

The Best Student Laptop
Many of the best cheap laptops might be good choices for high school and college students, but the Acer Swift 3s exceptionally durable build makes it an excellent choice for backpack-battering and dining hall spills. Its 14-inch screen also gives you more room for homework multitasking than some of the 13-inch machines here.
But the highlight of the Swift 3 is its Ryzen 4000 processors. We tested a model with a Ryzen 7 4700U, which did an excellent job handling our daily multitasking workload, and delivered seven-hour battery life as well.
On the outside, the Swift 3 isnt the thinnest or most beautiful laptop you can buy, but its a solid performer in most areas. It has all kinds of ports, including USB-C, USB-A, and an HDMI. The backlit keyboard has a nice click to it and has a reliable integrated fingerprint reader as well.
Best Gaming Laptop Under $500
Why we like it:
- Graphics Card: AMD Radeon Vega 3
- Processor: AMD Ryzen 3
- SSD: 128GB
DesignWhile the Acer Aspire 5 Slim is available at the ultra-inexpensive sub-$400 price point, it does look the part. The slim notebook is not only powerful, but lightweight as well, stowing away almost unnoticeably with a tight form factor, expensive-looking finishes, and a sub-four-pound weight.
Both small and cheap, the Acer Aspire 5 completes the holy trinity with excellent performance. An AMD Ryzen 3 chipset perhaps isnt as impressive as the newest-generation Intel CPUs, but one of those is more expensive than this entire laptop. Four gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of SSD space are also low for the category, but again, still noteworthy considering that this laptop is cheaper than designer shoes.
Convenient FeaturesThe stock RAM is minimal, if not inadequate, but it is upgradeable. If youre planning on running more intense games, wed definitely recommend the upgrade, and the RAM in this can be raised from 4GB to 16GB simply and inexpensively.
The speaker and screen are both quite impressive for the price range, although nothing special compared to more expensive versions. Nonetheless, each and every component on this laptop is quite impressive. For less than the price of an iPhone, you can buy this gaming-ready laptop.
- SSD: 500GB
- SSD: 1TB
- SSD: 512GB
VerdictThe L340 is simply the best gaming laptop under $1000.
- SSD: 256GB
- SSD: 256GB
- SSD: 256GB

First, in order to qualify as cheap, laptops must cost less than $999. The Graphics Processor: Now Here’s Where To Spend
The dedicated graphics chip is the backbone of any gaming computer. In budget gaming machines, Nvidia’s GeForce GTX line dominates the market, and the latest chips at this writing are part of the company’s GeForce GTX 1600 series, or “Turing” family, which rolled out in April 2019 in mobile versions of the GeForce GTX 1650 and GTX 1660 Ti. A GeForce GTX 1650 Ti joined the family in April 2020, fitting in between those two.
However, due to some changes in Nvidia’s stack, it’s not just about GTX at this price. When Nvidia launched the GTX 1650 Ti on laptops in April 2020, it also lowered the starting price for laptops with its RTX 2060 GPU to just $999. The RTX 2060 will only be found in laptops at the very top of the “budget” price range , and even then, only in a couple of selected models. But still, it technically brings the RTX line and its signature ray-tracing capabilities to this category. This means gaming at high settings on an entry-level laptop is more attainable than ever.
Meanwhile, this spring, Nvidia rolled out the new, mainstream GeForce RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti GPUs for gaming laptops. So far, they have only barely tipped into laptops under $1,000 we’ve seen just a few RTX 3050-based machines starting at around $999.
Hp Pavilion Gaming 16
With this 16.1-inch notebook, you can tick all the right boxes for a budget gaming laptop featuring a previous-generation Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of memory, 512GB of solid-state storage, and a dedicated Nvidia graphics card.
As youd expect with a gaming laptop, the model scored well in our performance evaluations. Our testers liked the display, too, noting that its bright and color-accurate, and provides a wide viewing angle, which is good if your awesome gaming skills tend to draw a crowd. Everyone behind you can clearly see whats happening on the screen. There’s a built-in webcam for quick and convenient Zoom calls.
Like other gaming laptops, this one is a little on the heavy side compared with nongaming models, coming in at nearly 5 pounds, and it lasted a modest 5 hours in our battery life tests.

The best gaming laptops come in all shapes and sizes and we picked out some of our favorites.
Predator Helios 300
The best gaming laptops don’t come cheap. That’s the somewhat depressing truth of a hardware market in the grips of a silicon shortage. But the positive side of it is that there is almost no compromise when it comes to modern gaming laptops. Whether you’re after many-core CPUs, graphics cards that can ray trace like there’s no tomorrow, or glorious screens with super-high refresh rates the top notebooks of today can offer it all.
And, unlike their desktop cousins, gaming laptop CPUs and GPUs are all pretty well stocked during this era of global shortages for pretty much everything. Honestly, these laptops might be the only way to get an Nvidia GeForce RTX 30-series GPU or even the new AMD Ryzen 5000-series processor.
Though they might not quite offer the same raw performance power as one of the best desktop gaming PC, what gaming notebooks do offer are slimmer, quieter, and in some cases, better gaming experiences, especially for the gamer on the go. Brands like Razer, MSI, and Dell offer tons of different configs with high refresh rate displays to ray-tracing powered GPUs

Large Screen Low Price
Specs: Display: 17.3 inches | CPU: Intel Core i5-10300H | RAM: 8GB | Storage: 512GB | Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti | Weight: 5.7lbs | Battery Life: 6 hours
Though most laptop screens run 15.6 inches or smaller, a subset of users prefers a larger display. On this list, the HP Pavilion offers a slightly bigger screen at 16.1 inches, but for gamers who desire even more screen real estate, the Asus TUF Gaming F17 could be your choice. It provides a 17.3-inch display, which translates roughly to 20% more screen area than a 15.6-inch display possesses .
Given the larger display, it’s no surprise that the Asus is the heaviest laptop listed here, though it still manages to weigh under 6 lbs. Specs are otherwise similar to the lower-end systems here — though you do get twice as much storage — but you’re paying more for the larger display.
Display What You See Is What Actually Matters
Display matters a lot for gaming laptops. The better it is, the better you play your games. These days, almost all gaming laptops prefer to stick with 1080p because the resolution is good, and the hardware can bear all the load. You will see certain 4k gaming laptops, but those are expensive, and the 4k evolution for gaming is still under process. Unless you spend a fortune on a gaming setup, 4k wont be fun. All budget gaming laptops will have 1080p resolution however, the difference exists in brightness, color accuracy, and refresh rate. We have mentioned the brightness level and color accuracy standards with almost all laptops below. And as far as the refresh rate is considered, you will get an average range under $1000 which will be 60Hz or maybe 120Hz. But for a 144Hz or more refresh rate, you will have to spend a bit more than 1000 dollars.
