Graphics And Battery Testing: Running Time To Spare
Flagship business laptops aren’t meant for hardcore gaming, and the Latitude 7420 is no exception. It’s nice to see Intel’s newer Iris Xe integrated graphics outperform the older UHD Graphics of the ThinkPads, but the Dell’s scores in our 3DMark and Superposition gaming simulations are nothing to get excited about.
On the other hand, the Latitude excels at lasting a long time away from a wall outlet. It lasted nearly 18 hours in our video playback marathon, behind only the MacBook Pro. Our test is fairly forgiving, since it involves looping a locally stored 720p video at 50% screen brightness with Wi-Fi turned off, but the result still suggests you should be able to get a full workday out of the 7420s battery.
We strongly recommend springing for the upgraded 4-cell, 63-watt-hour battery in our review unit, since the base model comes with a 3-cell, 42-watt-hour battery that likely won’t last as long.
Laptop Recommendations For Other Remote Jobs
Digital marketers and developers arent the only two remote job groups in need of high-quality, affordable laptops. Here are a few more professions that need a reliable device to do remote work.
1) Teachers and online coaches
If youre teaching online, you dont necessarily need an expensive laptop, but it should have a few essential features to support numerous Zoom calls and help you edit content for your online classes. Here are the basic laptop specifications teachers and online couches should be looking for:
- At least 8 GB RAM.
- A minimum of 256 GB SSD.
- A 13 screen minimum.
- Low- to average-intensity CPU.
- High-quality webcam and keyboard.
On top of that, look for a laptop with decent battery life. It should be able to get you through at least 11 hours of work without a power cord in case you experience a power outage in your area.
2) Travel agents
If you work as a travel agent, you can choose any affordable laptop on the market. Since your job doesnt involve a lot of data processing, you can opt for the most basic features, including:
- A low-intensity CPU.
- A 13 screen.
- A minimum of 8 hours battery life.
What you definitely need in a laptop is a good-quality webcam. Since youll have to connect with your clients remotely, you will most likely have several Zoom meetings a day, making an advanced webcam that can transmit a high-quality image your top requirement.

Go Solid State If You Can: Storage Solutions
With businesses using video, multimedia PowerPoint slides, and multi-megapixel photos in staff meetings virtual and in-person, opting for a spacious drive is a good idea. If you’re going to go with a traditional platter, a 1TB hard drive is a good balance between economy and space.
That said, we’re huge fans of solid-state boot drives. While pricier and more meager in their storage capacities, solid-state drives don’t have any spinning parts and are therefore better suited to take a licking on the road. SSD-equipped systems also boot and launch apps more quickly. If you’ll travel or commute much with your laptop and don’t need maximal storage capacity, an SSD is the right choice. SSDs tend to be pricier than hard drives, which means that you’ll likely be looking at 256GB or 512GB capacities to maximize your budget.
Optical drives have all but disappeared on business laptops. If you need to retrieve older files or records stored on CDs or DVDs, an external drive can help that’s a smarter move than buying a bulky laptop equipped with an optical drive if you know you’re not quite done shuffling discs yet.

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Battery Life
Leave the brick in your office and work from bed because the X1 Carbon with an FHD+ display can easily last a full workday before powering down. Heck, you can even watch the entirety of Zack Snyder’s Justice League after you clock off before refueling the X1 Carbon via its USB-C port.
I say that because the laptop lasted for an outstanding 15 hours and 39 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits.
The X1 Carbon isn’t the only marathon runner in this category. The EliteBook x360 1040 had an extra breathe in its lungs while the Latitude 9420 2-in-1 and X1 Yoga weren’t far behind the Carbon. These endurance beasts bested the category average by several hours.
How Much Do Business Laptops Generally Cost
The cost of business laptops ranges from $500 to $3,000 depending on the model, processing power, quality of the screen display, battery life and how much built-in RAM is included.
Business laptops tend to be more expensive than consumer models. However, for this extra price, you’ll receive a higher-quality product with additional components that can last for years. These components can include stronger batteries, a better graphics processing unit or additional USB ports.
“You can get solid business laptops that you could use for at least three to four years for $1,200,” Petrova told Business News Daily. “However, when you need more performance, high-end GPU and processing power models can cost anywhere from $2,300 to $3,000. These models will be good for the next four to five years.”

Do I Need Any Extras When I Buy A Laptop
To my mind, the whole charm of a laptop is that it gives you everything you need in one device. That being said, I know that some people find laptop keyboards cramped and trackpads annoying. Thankfully, these days almost every peripheral keyboard and mouse is Bluetooth enabled so all should connect to your laptop with ease. You can find my guides to the best keyboards and best computer mouse by clicking those links.
Microsoft Surface Pro 8 2
The Surface Pro is a tablet. It’s also a laptop. You have the flexibility to use it like a convertible but also completely free of a keyboard. And this “tablet” packs a full laptop’s worth of hardware inside. Throw in a pen, kickstand, and a terrific-looking display, and you have an incredibly versatile business machine.
The latest version, the Surface Pro 8, is incredibly flexible and shows off the very best of what Windows 11 has to offer. This one comes with 11th Gen Intel processors, a stellar 120Hz display, Thunderbolt 4, optional LTE connectivity, and more. The design of the Surface Pro 8 is very similar to the thin-and-light Surface Pro X, too, making it very easy to carry around.
If you add a Surface Dock, this can be your desktop machine in the office. Attach the Type Cover and Surface Pen, and it’s your laptop for hitting the road. It’s truly a laptop for all situations.

Lenovo Thinkbook 14s Yoga Audio
The ThinkBook 14s Yoga features dual Harman-branded speakers located on the laptops underside. I hope youre not a music producer or a podcast editor because the Yogas speakers arent meant for anything more than just a solo jamming session in a quiet room. I turned the volume up to the max and played Up by Cardi B, but instead of filling my small testing room, the catchy tune played at a low decibel level. It was very anticlimactic.
If you have plans of placing the Yoga on a table and watching Netflix with loved ones, be prepared to have tomatoes thrown at you for the hushful sound. However, if having thunderously loud speakers isnt your thing, the Yogas low-volume speakers wont irk you especially if youll be working in a quiet office.
The Yoga has a Dolby Audio app to tune the speakers to your liking. There are four audio presets: Movie, Music, Game and Voice. Strangely enough, I preferred the Movie profile because it placed more emphasis on mids and lows that seemed more flat with the Music preset. When I tried to listen to my favorite podcast Brilliant Idiots, I cringed when I used the Voice preset that the Dolby Audio app claims to be optimized for podcasts. It made the hosts sound like theyre talking in a hole. I preferred the Game preset, which accentuated and highlighted the hosts voices.
Lenovo Thinkpad E490 For Small Business Owners
This is a very good laptop for maximum small scale business owners. Especially, if your work requires a lot of typing then you must go for this laptop in one go. You cannot deal with a lot of sound, graphic, or image work. What is impressive is the battery life and keyboard of the laptop.
So the build is solid yet lightweight and portable. The laptop comes with a 1.8GHz intel core i7 processor, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 250GB SSD storage, and 1366×768 Resolution. How can we forget to mention our special Intel UHD Graphics 620 Graphics card! The display is boosted with Anti-Glare technology, and even if you keep working for long hours, you are not likely to risk your eyes much.
The features are satisfactory, but the 14 inch UHD display is less sharp for image works. The Keyboard is Spill-resistant, which allows you to sip your favorite beverage while you work without worrying much about the spill and damage. The battery life is around 13 hours. The laptop comes with an inbuilt microphone and an HD webcam with a resolution of 720p. It runs on Windows 10.

Buying Guide For Best Budget Laptops
Shopping for a budget laptop can be a tricky thing because there are a ton of available options and it’s tough to find a good value in a sea of disposable tech. To complicate matters, everyone has a different idea of what budget means. To us, budget laptops are around $500, but your mileage may vary.Whether youre looking for a new laptop for work, school, or casual use, there are plenty of reliable options for a few hundred dollars. Youll need to make some smart compromises for example, most budget laptops include graphics hardware thats capable but not fast enough to keep up with video games that require a powerful video card. Thats OK with us gaming laptops are great, too, but a good budget laptop will still deliver when it comes to working with office apps, streaming video, and any work that relies on a web browser.Focus on comparing the specs, the must-have features, and the most reliable brands when deciding on the right budget laptop.

Dell Xps 9500 Business Laptop
WHY WE LIKE IT: An ergonomically designed laptop that is comfortable for long periods of use, with a 10th gen Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a powerful NVIDIA graphics card, for gaming and for running graphically intensive business applications.
- On the expensive side
- 16GB of RAM
The Dell XPS 9500 is designed with comfort in mind, with an extremely large and ergonomic touchpad, a carbon fiber palm rest, and the companys proprietary EyeSafe vision care technology. The specs here are also incredible, thanks to a powerful 10th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a large 512GB solid-state drive. We also appreciated the inclusion of an NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, which is great for gaming and for running graphically intensive applications of all kinds.
Though most of the features here are top-notch, including four integrated stereo speakers, the webcam is on the weaker side, so you might want to invest in a dedicated webcam if you find yourself making plenty of Zoom calls. Also, this is a fairly expensive laptop, likely due to all of the impressive specs on offer. A more affordable option is the best Ubuntu laptop that still boasts advanced features such as a high-grade seventh-generation Intel Core i7 CPU and 16GB of dedicated DDR4 RAM.
Display: At Least 14 Inches With 1920×1080 Pixels
A display is one of the most important and expensive parts of an office computer. For basic tasks, it is good to have a 14-inch or a 15-inch screen with a resolution of 1920×1080 . If there is a taller display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, dont hesitate to take it, as it is great for working with documents.
If you select an 11-inch laptop and use it without an external monitor, you might notice that you dont have enough space when working with large spreadsheets. A laptop with a 17-inch screen might be too heavy and bulky.

Limitations You Can Live With
Naturally, a budget laptop is one thats more affordable than cutting-edge machines, and in the majority of cases, a lower price means less-powerful internal hardware. Thats not a bad thing. For example, if you spend most of your computer time browsing the web or watching movies, chances are you dont need the latest-generation processor or an ultra-powerful video card. You can save a lot of money by finding a budget laptop that makes reasonable compromises.
As youre shopping for budget laptops, consider the most common hardware compromises youll encounter.
- Video hardware: Most budget laptops either use underpowered graphics processing units , or they power their video by sharing resources with the main processor . In these cases, video on the laptop will be adequate, but thats about it. Watching Netflix will be fine, but your laptop will struggle with more intense video tasks such as playing video games and editing videos.
“If youre thinking about buying a budget laptop with an 11-inch screen, make sure the diminutive size isnt too small for your hands. Some users complain that there isnt enough room to comfortably type on the corresponding keyboard. “
Buying Basics: Mobile Workstations
CPU and RAM. The rule of thumb here is to buy all the processing power you can afford. In the pro mobile workstation market, workstation-grade CPUs are an all-Intel world, centered around its highest-end Core mobile chips and its mobile Xeon processors.
While plenty of good gaming laptops, as long as they have a fast graphics card, can make do with a Core i5, mobile workstation shoppers should head straight for a Core i7, a Core i9, or even a Xeon, with as many cores and threads as are available. Here, you’ll want to look at the specific software that you mean to run on the machine for recommendations on what grade of CPU the vendor deems ideal.
A few entry-level machines, meant more for showing finished renderings to clients rather than producing the renderings themselves, feature quad-core processors. But most mobile workstations rely on beefy six-core-or-more CPUs, teamed with plenty of memory16GB is a minimum, with 32GB not uncommon and 64GB a popular ceiling. Again, your software’s suggested requirements should be your guide, but erring on the side of “more” here, especially for demanding applications, is a safe mistake to make. Again, let the software makers’ recommendations be your guide.
Some Lenovo systems go further by having Pantone color calibrators on board: You select a white point and gamma value, then close the lid, which puts the screen against a palm-rest sensor. A few seconds later, an audible tone indicates that the calibrator has done its work.
