My Recommended Laptops For Word Processing And Excel
I compiled my list from the best sellers, newest releases, and the best time-tested laptops from late 2015 and 2016. I then compared them according to their 3rd-party benchmarks, various independent reviews, and tests. Finally, I took note of common complaints from people who have actually bought and used the laptops on my list.
Can I Get A Chromebook Instead Of A Windows Laptop
A lot can be done entirely on the web these days, though you can use Chromebooks offline in some cases. Take stock of everything you do on a daily basis, and you may find there’s nothing you can’t accomplish with Chrome at its most basic level.
That said, a Windows laptop or MacBook can run the Chrome browser as well as other software supported by those operating systems. Even if you don’t immediately need a particular piece of software, it’s nice to have the option. Plus, if you’re shopping for a Chromebook for remote learning with Google Classroom, a Mac or Windows PC will work as well.
Chromebooks are not natively compatible with Windows or Mac software, though current models can run Android apps and there are also web apps that are available through . You can’t install the full Office software on a Chromebook, but Microsoft makes both web-based and Android versions available in the Chrome and , respectively. But generally speaking, if you need or want a specific Windows or Mac application — and there’s no suitable web or Android app substitute and you don’t want to use VMware — don’t get a Chromebook.
Also, if you need advanced photo- and video-editing capabilities, you’ll want a Windows, Mac or Linux laptop. Basic photo and video editing is fine, but Chromebooks typically don’t offer the graphics performance you need for demanding tasks or, again, the option to install Windows or Mac software and games.
Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Design
One is better than two in this case. Lenovo opted for a single bar-style hinge to replace the dual hinges on previous models. It feels sturdy like the rest of the laptop and hides the important antennas within.
In its quest to perfect the laptop puzzle, Lenovo moved a few pieces around. The top-firing speakers once positioned at the top of the deck now flank each side of the keyboard. And the power button returns to the deck following a three-year vacation on the right edge. The previous position allowed for power on/off with the notebook docked while convenient for some setups, I prefer the small oblong button on the deck where I don’t need to hunt for it.
The rest will look familiar to ThinkPad diehards. Plush matte-black surfaces coat the system and give it a stealthy, inconspicuous appearance that contrasts its satisfying warmth. Logos on the deck and lid were emboldened with larger fonts to appeal to the consumer crowd without being too in-your-face. Red trim remains a ThinkPad signature and can be found on the X1 Carbon’s pointing stick, branding and the illuminated “i” on the lid.

Best Gaming Laptops In 2021
Predator Helios 300
The best gaming laptop used to mean picking a bulky clam that you could barely describe as portable, due to only chunky “desktop replacements” having enough space under the hood for a worthwhile GPU. That’s no longer the case. Today’s top gaming laptops are able to squeeze desktop-level performance into some impressively slight chassis.
The newest portable powerhouses pack all of the features of big desktop gaming rigs, including multicore CPUs, the latest Nvidia RTX 30-series or AMD Radeon RX 6000-series GPUs, and speedy NVMe SSDs. This includes configurations with heaps of RAM and super-high refresh screens. You can even find laptops with mechanical keyboards.
Gaming laptops have also sidestepped the silicon shortage, as there appears to be plentiful stockat least at the high end. Manufacturers have been focusing on high-end offerings, though, so midrange and budget models may be a little more sparse. Still, there are enough models out there to meet demand.
We’ve tested hundreds of gaming laptops over the years and continually update this guide with the latest models. What you’ll find below are the laptops that stand out as offering the best balance of performance, portability, and price. Whatever you’re in the market for, you should find the laptop that’s right for you right here.
The Types Of Desktop Pcs

A recent development in the desktop PC world has been a modest diversification of the system case. The typical business PC comes in a mini-tower box, which is probably best sited under or next to your desk.
But if space is at a premium, a smaller case would be a better choice. Dell, for example, delivers its Optiplex models in mini tower, ‘thin’ desktop and ‘compact’ small form factor sizes, each model offering the same computing power but in a different case.
Three other formats that have grown in popularity are:
1. All-in-one, otherwise known as AIO, which combine the monitor with the base unit. The move to power-efficient components, the falling price of LCD panels and the ubiquity of touch functionality make AIO an increasingly popular choice for businesses. The all-in-one PC essentially resembles a slightly larger than normal LCD display that contains the processor, hard drive and memory built-in to the screen casing. The end result is a very elegant, clutter-free desktop PC.
2. Ultra-small form factors, otherwise known as net tops or mini PCs, which borrow a lot of their designs from laptops. They are essentially laptops without a screen, input peripherals and a battery.
3. HDMI dongles which have been inspired by tablets and smartphones and often share parts with the latter. These are usually used for display signage or in niche markets. They are usually not powerful enough for most tasks but things are likely to improve by the end of 2016.

Evaluating Processing Muscle And Memory
Today, processors with four or more cores are widely available to handle both everyday email checking and more strenuous business applications. Many business laptops use Intel’s latest 11th Generation “Tiger Lake” processors, though models with the previous 10th Generation “Ice Lake” and “Comet Lake” chips remain widely available and are still capable enough for many tasks. Truly demanding workflows will need hexa-core units like the latest top-end Core i7 and Core i9 CPUs. You can even find eight-core Core i9 chips, previously limited to desktops, in some larger workstation-grade machines meant for designers, engineers, and serious data crunchers. AMD-based laptops, employing the Ryzen Pro series of CPUs, remain uncommon but have started to infiltrate some classic business-laptop lines, such as Lenovo’s ThinkPad.
At the other end of the spectrum are power-saving processors such as Intel’s Y-series Core and Pentium and Celeron chips in tablets and ultraportable laptops. These ultra-low-wattage processors are often marketed alongside higher-performance chips look for the “Y” in the chip name to tell the difference. Really, though, Core Y, Celeron, and Pentium CPUs may prove a bit underpowered for everyday productivity work if you tend to multitask, with lots of programs open at once.

How We Test The Best Workstation Laptops
We put each laptop through extensive benchmark testing both synthetic and real-world before they end up in the hands of our reviewers. We evaluate each aspect of the laptop, including its performance, battery life, display, speakers and heat management.
In our benchmark testing, we use a Klein K10 colorimeter to detect the brightness and sRGB color gamut of the laptop’s display. For performance testing, we run the laptop through a gauntlet of benchmarks, including Geekbench 4.3 and 5.0 and 3DMark professional graphics tests.
To determine real-world performance, we task the laptop to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution and to duplicate a 4.97GB multimedia file. Our real-world graphics test is the Dirt 3 benchmark with medium settings at 1080p resolution.
We also run heat tests by playing a 15-minute full-screen video and measuring temperatures in different areas of the laptop. Last but not least, our battery test consists of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. For MacBooks and premium Windows 10 laptops, a runtime of over 9 hours is considered a good result whereas gaming laptops and workstations that can stay powered for longer than 5 hours deserve praise.
These tests are complemented with extensive hands-on testing from our reviewers who critique everything from the laptop’s materials to the feel of its touchpad.

How To Choose The Right Laptop Form Factor
Modern laptops are available primarily in three different designs.
Notebook: This is your standard clamshell laptop with a lid that opens to a maximum of about 180 degrees. Notebooks sometimes come with touch displays, but you’ll mostly see them with non-touch options.
Convertible: If you’re looking at a laptop with a screen that rotates all the way around to lie flat again, you’re looking at a convertible laptop. The design also allows for tent and stand modes, offering you some variety. Convertible laptops use touch displays.
2-in-1: Laptops with a removable keyboard and touchpad are called 2-in-1. You can use them as a tablet without anything attached, but you can also connect the keyboard for a full laptop experience. 2-in-1 devices use touch displays and often have a compatible active pen.
Convertible and 2-in-1 laptops work fine as standard laptops, but they also have the added benefit of working as a tablet. If you hate the idea of a tablet and think you’ll be sticking with a standard laptop design, choosing a notebook can often save money.

What Is The Difference Between A Chromebook And A Laptop
Most laptops use Microsofts Windows operating system, while MacBooks use Apples own MacOS operating system.
Chromebooks are different. They run on Chrome OS, an operating system designed by Google. Anyone can license this operating system, so youll see Chromebooks manufactured by a wide range of different brands and available in a variety of styles.
Googles operating system doesnt run traditional desktop programs. Instead it behaves more like the Chrome web browser, using online apps such as Google Docs, as well as some Android apps.
This sounds limiting and for most users it is but there are upsides. Because most of the processing is happening over the internet, Chromebooks dont need to be so powerful. This means they generally have a longer battery life, are much cheaper, far more secure, and boot up faster than regular laptops.
If you do most of your work inside your browser, a Chromebook makes sense. Designed to showcase what a Chromebook is capable of, the Pixelbook go is our recommended laptop in this category.
The Best Macbook Pro For Everyday Users
If youre looking to buy an M1 MacBook for heavier workloads thats not as mind-numbingly expensive as the most recent releases, youll want to look at the late-2020 MacBook Pro. It starts at $1,299, which is $300 more than the late-2020 MacBook Air.
The MacBook Pro has a slightly different design and look than the Air, as well as a few additional features like the Touch Bar. But the two have the same processor. The main difference is that the Pro includes a fan , which means it can sustain heavy workloads for a longer period of time without needing to throttle its performance. But you wont notice much of a performance difference between the two MacBooks unless youre routinely pushing heavy tasks for long periods of time.
If thats you, though, go for the Pro. We were able to run a number of hefty Premiere Pro exports and didnt see a dip in times. The Pro also achieved a significantly higher score than the Air in a 30-minute loop of Cinebench R23 the scores were closer together after a single run.
