The ARM-based 5-nanometer chip has 16 billion transistors, which is the most the company has ever put into a chip. In addition to all those transistors, the SoC features an eight-core processor, integrated graphics, a unified memory architecture, Apples Neural Engine, an improved image signal processor and Apples Secure Enclave. The result is a faster, more powerful laptop that’s a force to be reckoned with.

Gone are the days when a decent laptop would cost you north of $1,000. It’s now possible to pick up a full-size or ultraportable Windows 11 notebook with a processor powerful enough for use at home, school, or work, for $500 or less. It’s also possible to find full-featured Chromebooks and hybrid systems that give you both laptop and tablet functionality in one device for less than that.
You should be prepared to compromise in one aspect or other, however. While it’s certainly possible to find a powerful laptop with a 15-inch screen, you might have to make do with a flimsy keyboard and touchpad. Likewise, you could buy an impeccably made ultraportable that uses a modest CPU and a small storage drive to achieve its low price. Understanding those trade-offs, and matching up a budget laptop’s strengths and weaknesses with what you will do with it, is the key to making a happy purchase. Here’s help.

You can find complete mini PCs for very light work and display-signage tasks for under $300, and perfectly serviceable small towers for $300 to $600. Gaming desktops with dedicated graphics cards start at around $500. You can also find all-in-one desktops, with the display and all of the computing components built into a single device, starting at around $400.
The thing with desktops is, opting for a cheap one does not carry some of the same risks you’d face with a like-priced laptop. A $250 Black Friday special or a steeply discounted refurbished desktop could perform just fine for basic computing, and you wouldn’t need to worry about the wear and tear on cheap materials that you might with a laptop of a similar price. That inexpensive laptop would be subject to the vagaries of daily commuting and the occasional drop from a coffee table. The desktop, in contrast, would need to stay put and just work.

What You Need To Know About Apple Silicon Macs
Starting with the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, Apple is embarking on a multi-year journey to replace the Macs typical Intel processors with its own chips, similar to the ones already used in iPhones and iPads. If youve used Macs for a couple of decades, you might remember the last time Apple did this, when it traded PowerPC chips for Intel processors in the mid-2000s.
Apples processors are much faster than the Intel chips they replace, and they allow these new Macs to get significantly better battery life. But there are some wrinkles Apple and Intel processors each use different instruction setsessentially, macOS and the apps you run need to talk to each processor in slightly different ways to get them to do the same things.2 Many apps, including all of Apples software, Google Chrome, and others, have already been updated to work with Apples new chips, which means they can take full advantage of their speed.
But as of late 2021, there are still some major apps, including some of Adobes software, and some scientific research and 3D drafting software that havent been optimized for Apples chips yet. New Macs can still run almost all of these apps, but macOS needs to translate them so that they can run on the new chips. Apple calls this translation software Rosetta, like the stone. The extra computational effort needed to translate these apps means they run just a bit more slowly than apps that have been optimized for Apple silicon .
Productivity Storage And Media Tests
PCMark 10 and 8 are holistic performance suites developed by the PC benchmark specialists at UL. The PCMark 10 test we run simulates different real-world productivity and content creation workflows. We use it to assess overall system performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet jockeying, web browsing, and videoconferencing. Unfortunately, the test would not complete on this laptop, which sometimes happens with budget systems. It doesnt mean this system is incapable of these tasks, just that it has a conflict with this benchmark.
PCMark 8, meanwhile, has a storage subtest that we use to assess the speed of the system’s boot drive. Both tests yield a proprietary numeric score higher numbers are better. We can at least compare these results in the table below, and you can also catch the PCMark 10 performance of the other systems.
As mentioned, there is no PCMark 10 result for this system, but you can see the SSD stacks up to the rest. Theyre all in line with one another, offering quick boot and load file times. The Asus Laptop L410 has slower eMMC flash storage, and couldnt complete this test. That is a key distinction in laptops in this price zone under $400, you’ll see a mix of “true” SSDs and pokier eMMC . The former is better.

Pinpoint The Specific Connectivity You Need
You might be able to excuse a relative lack of input and output ports on a sleek AIO. The screen and speakers are built in, and you’ll likely use a wireless keyboard and mouse, anyway. But mini PCs and desktop towers need the right selection of ports. At a minimum, they’ll have to connect to a display, speakers or headphones, and a power source.
On all but the very tiniest of mini PCs, you should look for at least three USB 3.0 ports, at least one of which should be the newer, oval-shaped Type-C variety if you have any compatible peripherals that plug directly into that kind of port. You’ll also typically find an HDMI output , a 3.5mm audio jack, a connector for an external Wi-Fi antenna, and a receptacle for a physical lock. Note that some mini PCs use scaled-down “mini” versions of HDMI or DisplayPort, which require a different kind of input cable or a dongle. Make sure the machine’s video outputs are compatible with your display and its cabling.
Many towers will also have multiple audio ports, including possibly an optical output and ports for individual speaker channels in a surround-sound setup. Make sure that these match up with any gear you may have the number of surround-sound jacks can vary depending on the PC and its motherboard. Note that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, while reliably present on even the cheapest laptops and many smaller desktops, is not a given on larger towers.
Best Overall: Dell Xps 13
CPU: Intel Core i5 1135 – i7 1185 | RAM: 8GB-16GB | Storage: 256GB-512GB | Graphics: Intel Iris Xe with shared graphics memory

Dell Xps 17 Keyboard And Touchpad
Typing on the keyboard was comfortable, although I would have liked a bit more feedback. Still, I hit my 70 word-per-minute on the 10fastfingers typing test without any extra effort.
Again, Dell went for the bigger is better approach on the XPS 17, outfitting it with a 3.5 x 6-inch touchpad. Thankfully, the smooth pad has excellent palm rejection, allowing me to type without accidentally activating the cursor. Performing Windows 10 gestures like pinch-zoom and three-finger flick was quick and responsive.
How To Save On A Macbook
MacOS is the go-to operating system for many creative industries. MacBooks are renowned for their power, their good looks and sleek, easy-to-use design. They arent cheap, though.
But we know that Apple stands out for customer loyalty 92% of Apple owners we surveyed* said they would choose Apple again when its time to replace their laptop.
If you have your heart set on Apple but dont want to fork out on top of the line, a refurbished model might be the way forward. Definitely want to be the first person to unbox it? Then consider a previous-generation model with an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor.
These will be cheaper than the latest M1 processor and are still an excellent choice if you dont need the enhanced power and battery life from the newer M1 chip.

How Much Ram Do I Need
The sweet spot for memory for both laptops and desktops is 8GB. You can check out our explainer on how much RAM do I need you need for the details. How Much Should You Spend On A Laptop
Sometimes the best does come at a steep price, but equally you can get a lot of laptop for under £500 or even £300 provided you need only complete basic tasks such as web browsing, writing emails and creating the odd document.
Around £500 or above can get you a solid laptop, but it’s likely to have an entry-level set of specs. We’re talking a relatively basic processor, minimal SSD storage and a relatively low-quality screen. It might also be on the heavy side.
Pay £700 or more and you should get a blazing fast processor, plenty of RAM, loads of storage and a gorgeous display. You should also expect excellent build quality and premium materials. Many laptops these days are above £1,000, which is when you start getting the likes of 4K touchscreens and ultra-lightweight builds.
We’ve shown you our favourite laptops available right now and offered some advice on how much to spend, but if you’re still undecided we might be able to help break down your options further. Here we talk about screen size, storage, processors and more to help you make your decision.

Best For College Students: Apple Macbook Air M1
CPU: Apple M1 Chip | RAM: 8GB-16GB | Storage: 256GB-2TB
Thanks to Apples proprietary M1 chip processor, the new MacBook Air delivers faster and better CPU speed than previous versions. In fact, the performance is said to rival its more expensive cousin, the MacBook Pro.
The new M1 chip improves performance and efficiency, and enables faster video and image processing than its predecessors. This model features the newly upgraded keyboard Magic Keyboard that offers keys with more depth than the flatter and much-complained-about keyboard featured by previous models. Additionally, weighing less than 3 lbs., the new MacBook Air is still one of the lightest laptops out there, which makes it a great travel companion for students.
Speaking of students, Apple offers special education pricing discounts with $100 off MacBook Airs for students and teachers. But owners may need to spend a little extra: The MacBook Air is limited to two Thunderbolt/USB-4 ports, so you’ll have to buy an adapter for HDMI, USB-A, and other ports.
The Best Laptop Of 2021
The late-2020 MacBook Air, powered by Apples M1 processor, is the best laptop you can buy. The base model, which includes 8GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, starts at $999.
Appearance-wise, this laptop has a lot in common with the Intel-powered MacBook Air that Apple released earlier this year, including the same 2560 x 1600 screen, Touch ID, 720p webcam, fingerprint sensor, and scissor-switch keyboard.
But the new processor is the star of the show here its fast. In our testing, it handled intense photo- and video-editing workloads better than almost any Intel-powered laptop weve tried this year. It was also able to run Shadow of the Tomb Raider at close-to-playable frame rates, which is quite a feat for integrated graphics. At launch, these apps hadnt yet been optimized for the M1 processor and were running through Apples Rosetta 2 translation layer but they still worked fine.
And the processing power didnt even weigh down the battery life: we got between eight and 10 hours of sustained work.
Another benefit of the M1 processor is that it enables the MacBook Air to run iPhone and iPad apps natively on macOS. As of this writing, there still isnt a huge selection of mobile apps available, and some that have been released arent quite optimized for the laptop screen. Still, its a benefit we can look forward to as time goes on.
The MacBook Pro is an excellent laptop for video editing and intensive work.
