Microsoft Surface Book 3
We received some feedback and have now added the Microsoft Surface Book 3 as a recommendation. This machine was new to us, but we have now tried it out to see why it is so popular.
Lisa had high hopes for the Surface Book, but ultimately she chose the HP Envy due to its higher price. The Surface Book is an excellent option if youre willing to spend a lot on great gear.
The latest model weighs in at just over 1.5kg, but thats not a bad thing. This model is a significant improvement over previous models. Its a beautiful, slim laptop that can also double as a tablet. Its perfect for mobile work.
The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 offers a great alternative to the Surface touchscreen series. It is lighter and cheaper than the Surface Pro 7 but does the job.
How We Test Business Laptops
We put each laptop through extensive benchmark testing both synthetic and real-world before they end up in the hands of our reviewers. We evaluate each aspect of the laptop, including its performance, battery life, display, speakers and heat management.
In our benchmark testing, we use a Klein K10 colorimeter to detect the brightness and sRGB color gamut of the laptop’s display. For performance testing, we run the laptop through a gauntlet of benchmarks, including Geekbench 4.3 and 5.0 and 3DMark professional graphics tests.
To determine real-world performance, we task the laptop to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution and to duplicate a 4.97GB multimedia file. Our real-world graphics test is the Dirt 3 benchmark with medium settings at 1080p resolution.
We also run heat tests by playing a 15-minute full-screen video and measuring temperatures in different areas of the laptop. Last but not least, our battery test consists of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. For MacBooks and premium Windows 10 laptops, a runtime of over 9 hours is considered a good result whereas gaming laptops and workstations that can stay powered for longer than 5 hours deserve praise.
These tests are complemented with extensive hands-on testing from our reviewers who critique everything from the laptop’s materials to the feel of its touchpad.
Completing Your Work From Home Setup With Essential Accessories
Let’s focus also on the other supplies, like a 2nd monitor, and other things that will help maximize WFH productivity.
Once you’ve invested in a work-from-home PC, it’s time to round out your home office with a few choice accessories.
First on the list is an external monitor. With a large second screen, you’ll be able to multitask more effectively, maintain better posture throughout the work day, and put less strain on your eyes.
Next, you’ll need a wireless mouse and keyboard, so that you can work in a more comfortable position and quickly navigate applications on your external monitor.
Meanwhile, if you work in a loud or distracting environment, we highly recommend a pair of noise-cancelling headphones to quiet the outside world. These active headphones filter out noise in real time, so you can focus on the task at hand.
In so many industries, the work-from-home phenomenon is quickly becoming normal, with companies allowing employees to “clock in” virtually and attend meetings via videoconference. If you’re one of the lucky people who can work remotely, you should take the time to set up your home office and get into the right mindset. It’ll pay off in the end. And we’re always here to help along the way.

Do I Need Any Extras When I Buy A Laptop
To my mind, the whole charm of a laptop is that it gives you everything you need in one device. That being said, I know that some people find laptop keyboards cramped and trackpads annoying. Thankfully, these days almost every peripheral keyboard and mouse is Bluetooth enabled so all should connect to your laptop with ease. You can find my guides to the best keyboards and best computer mouse by clicking those links.
Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5
Chromebooks are a great alternative to budget Windows laptops. Earlier Chromebooks were mainly used by students. But now, Chrome OS has gained more features and is more capable ever than before. That is why we have included the Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5. It features a 2 in 1 design with a 13.3-inch FHD display that is also a touchscreen. There are 360-degree hinges that allow it to become a tablet. You can also use a digital pen on this laptop. It is also a bright and colorful display for excellent picture quality. Besides, it has a webcam and thin bezels on the sides.

Which Laptops Last The Longest
Depending on what you buy and how you use it, a good laptop thats well cared for should last at least three to five years. A good ultrabook, a business laptop, or a MacBook will feel sturdier, last longer, and perform better than a cheap sub-$500 laptop with a mostly plastic frame and a basic processor. And a laptop that you primarily use around the house will last longer than one that you travel with frequently. Some business laptops or photo and video editing laptops are easier to upgrade with more memory and storage later to extend their useful life. A gaming laptop will feel outdated sooner than most other kinds of laptops, since new 3D games become more demanding at a faster rate than other apps.
Samsung Galaxy Book S
- 13.3-inch screen
- 17 hours of battery life
- Best lightweight laptop with a long battery life
- Price point from $899
It took some time for the Galaxy Book S to appear, despite it being introduced last summer. It also features a Qualcomm Snapdragon8CX processor, which is a smartphone processor. It’s lightweight because of this, although it may have had issues with certain Windows apps. It’s fast, but the Galaxy Book’s battery lasts a ridiculous amount of time.
Samsung claims it should last for 23 hours. This is crazy. There are no other options. $999 will get 256GB storage and LTE cellular wireless. This is great for when your home is not available.

What Is The Difference Between A Laptop And A Notebook
A notebook is just a slim, light laptop. In general, notebooks tend to save space by using SSD storage rather than the traditional HDD storage of older laptops. However, these days most bigger laptops are using SSD storage as well.
The one that is a bit different is a Cloudbook or Chromebook. These are smaller laptops with almost no storage whatsoever. The idea is that you store all your files and data in the cloud and just download them when you need them. All well and good, as long as youve got a decent internet connection, but if youre travelling a lot, these may not be ideal.
Which Business Laptop Is Best
Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Carbon is our favorite business laptop for four years running thanks to its lightweight design, fast performance and good display options. One option among the top competitors to the X1 Carbon is the HP EliteBook x360 1040 G7, a gorgeous 2-in-1 laptop with long battery life, an awesome keyboard and fast performance. Unfortunately, it is even more expensive than the X1 Carbon. And don’t count Dell out its Latitude 9420 2-in-1 is a fantastic option if you have the budget.
On the macOS side of things, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 is an excellent option for power users who run massive simulations or transfer large files. The new M1 processor is a speed demon but also efficient enough to give the MacBook Pro an absurd 16 hours and 32 minutes of battery life.
If you’re an artist or designer who wants to use a stylus, we recommend the Dell Latitude 7320 Detachable, Microsoft Surface Pro 7+ or the Lenovo ThinkPad X12 Detachable, which is essentially a tablet version of the X1 Carbon. True power users who need to crunch big data should opt for a workstation, like the excellent HP ZBook Studio x360 G5. For those on a budget, like small-business owners, the HP Pro C640 Chrome Enterprise is a straightforward, easy-to-use laptop or, if you need to run Windows 10, consider the ThinkPad X13 or HP EliteBook 840 G7.

Business Laptop Buying Guide
So which laptop is going to please everyone? It wont be the same one for every situation . Once youve decided if your style of business suits Windows, ChromeOS or macOS then you can set about choosing the model.
You’ll also want to consider whether these laptops come with Windows 10 Pro as standard. It’s easy to upgrade from Windows 10 Home, and this will also ensure you get Windows 11 Pro without any extra hassle.
Price is a factor, of course. Some high-end laptops are indeed excellent but you may want to save some money while still getting decent performance. Thankfully those laptops do exist and that’s why a Chromebook might be a great choice, especially if your needs aren’t demanding.
Some of the laptops in this list are higher priced, but they often represent good value considering the features and specifications they have. We’ve included a range of different prices and options.
Robust build could be important if you work in the field, or you might want something featherweight to carry from meeting to meeting around the globe. Then features such as fingerprint readers for additional security or long-lasting battery life might be top of your must-have list.
Security is important to everyone, but especially if you plan on storing sensitive data on the laptop. Look out for things like a fingerprint scanner. A webcam might also be necessary but some have awkward placements below the screen or even in the keyboard – not ideal if video calls are a regular fixture.

What’s An Ideal Size And Weight
Most people searching for a general-purpose laptop should choose one that measures about half an inch thick and weighs 3 pounds or less. In general, these are the maximum dimensions and heft a laptop can have for us to consider it an ultraportable, and for most users, portability is the key to maximizing use and enjoyment.
Aiming for that weight and thickness, in most cases, will limit the laptops screen size to 13 or 14 inches, although a few models with 15-inch or larger screens now fit into the ultraportable category. At most of these screen sizes, you can find models in either the conventional clamshell laptop shape or a 2-in-1 convertible design. The latter has a hinge that rotates the screen 360 degrees so you can use it as a makeshift tablet or prop it up like a tent for watching movies.
Some Windows and Chrome OS laptops do have smaller displays, such as 10 or 11 inches. Some of these are not technically laptops in the pure sense, but rather tablets with detachable keyboards. Unless youre specifically looking for a part-time tablet or the lightest possible laptop, avoid these designs. Theyre lighter than most 13-inch ultraportables, often less than 2 pounds, but theyre not as good at being tablets as the Apple iPad is, and their detachable keyboards mean theyre not much good at being laptops, eithertyping on most of them tends to be subpar.

Display: At Least 14 Inches With 1920×1080 Pixels
A display is one of the most important and expensive parts of an office computer. For basic tasks, it is good to have a 14-inch or a 15-inch screen with a resolution of 1920×1080 . If there is a taller display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, dont hesitate to take it, as it is great for working with documents.
If you select an 11-inch laptop and use it without an external monitor, you might notice that you dont have enough space when working with large spreadsheets. A laptop with a 17-inch screen might be too heavy and bulky.

The Best Laptop Of 2021
The late-2020 MacBook Air, powered by Apples M1 processor, is the best laptop you can buy. The base model, which includes 8GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, starts at $999.
Appearance-wise, this laptop has a lot in common with the Intel-powered MacBook Air that Apple released earlier this year, including the same 2560 x 1600 screen, Touch ID, 720p webcam, fingerprint sensor, and scissor-switch keyboard.
But the new processor is the star of the show here its fast. In our testing, it handled intense photo- and video-editing workloads better than almost any Intel-powered laptop weve tried this year. It was also able to run Shadow of the Tomb Raider at close-to-playable frame rates, which is quite a feat for integrated graphics. At launch, these apps hadnt yet been optimized for the M1 processor and were running through Apples Rosetta 2 translation layer but they still worked fine.
And the processing power didnt even weigh down the battery life: we got between eight and 10 hours of sustained work.
Another benefit of the M1 processor is that it enables the MacBook Air to run iPhone and iPad apps natively on macOS. As of this writing, there still isnt a huge selection of mobile apps available, and some that have been released arent quite optimized for the laptop screen. Still, its a benefit we can look forward to as time goes on.
The MacBook Pro is an excellent laptop for video editing and intensive work.
