Ports And Preferences: What Connections Should My Graphics Card Have
Three kinds of port are common on the rear edge of a current graphics card: DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort. Some systems and monitors still use DVI, but it’s the oldest of the three standards and no longer appears on high-end cards these days.
Most cards have several DisplayPorts and one HDMI port. When it comes to HDMI versus DisplayPort, note some differences. First, if you plan on using a 4K display, now or in the future, your card needs to at least support HDMI 2.0a or DisplayPort 1.2/1.2a. It’s fine if the GPU supports anything above those labels, like HDMI 2.0b or DisplayPort 1.4, but that’s the minimum you’ll want for smooth 4K playback or gaming.
HDMI 2.1 is a new cable spec compatible with all of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 30 Series cards, which ups the old bandwidth limits from 18Gbps to 48Gbps . The upgrade also enables 8K resolution to display at a refresh rate up to 60Hz, with 4K supported up to 120Hz.
Note that some of the cards from Nvidia’s GeForce RTX Turing line employ a port called VirtualLink. This port looks like a USB Type-C port that also supports DisplayPort over USB-C. What the port is really designed for, though: attaching future generations of virtual-reality headsets, providing power and bandwidth adequate to the needs of VR head-mounted displays . It’s nice to have, but no VR hardware supports it yet, and it’s not on the Founders Edition cards of the RTX 30 Series, so its future is cloudy.
Why All The Evga Cards
When evaluating our picks for this article, we searched for cards with a good balance between pricing , features, and performance. EVGA came out on top quite a few times in that match-up, even offering one of the cheapest 2080 Tis available on the market. How We Test Gaming Laptops
When we bring a laptop into our laboratory, our goal is to see how it would work if you brought it into your home or office. While we use a number of industry standard benchmarks such as Geekbench and 3DMark, we focus heavily on real-world tests that we have developed in-house.
To test endurance, the Laptop Mag Battery test surfs the web at 150 nits of brightness until the system runs out of juice. To judge pure processing power, we use a giant spreadsheet macro that matches 65,000 names with their addresses, a video transcoder that converts a 4K video to 1080p and the Geekbench 4 synthetic test. We measure graphics prowess with both 3DMark Ice Storm / Fire Strike and a series of actual game titles.
We use a colorimeter to measure screen brightness and color gamut while other instruments help us determine a laptop’s key travel and ambient heat. See this page on How We Test Laptops for more details on our benchmarking procedures.
Nvidia Geforce Rtx 3080 Review: Verdict

Nvidias upper-midrange RTX 3080 has proven to be overwhelmingly popular with consumers, and looking at its price-performance ratio, its not hard to see why. For professional media workstations, this GPU will be phenomenally powerful, and manages to crunch through the most challenging of workflows with relative ease. Its understandably not quite as powerful as the 3090, but this is more a question of future-proofing theres little thats likely to trouble this card over the next three to five years, but the 3090 will last even longer before it needs replaced.
The 3080 does come with the usual caveat that its not suitable for high-end scientific modelling, but organisations undertaking these workloads will likely need the driver stability and ISV support offered by Nvidias professional GPUs anyway. For content creation tasks, however, theres little that can touch this card, and its worth keeping an eye on stock levels and prices for anyone that wants to outfit a workstation with supreme staying power.

Bargain Your Way To Getting A Graphics Card
Strangely, one of the more affordable ways to get yourself the latest graphics card is to buy a gaming PC while its on sale. Gaming PCs from brands like Asus, Dell, MSI, Acer, and HP will often see discounts for hundreds of dollars off, so not only are you saving a ton of money, youre also avoiding potential headaches that can accompany a DIY buildand you also get a warranty.
Prebuilt PCs have come a long way, too. They aren’t proprietary machines with randomly soldered-on components. They’re mostly as upgradeable as anything you might put together on your own.
Another way of enjoying the latest graphics cards is through gaming laptops. There are plenty of Nvidia RTX 20- and GTX 16-series gaming laptops out there right now. New GTX gaming laptops have also hit the streets and theyre far more affordable than the RTX-equipped models thanks to the laptops introduced during IFA 2019 like the new Acer Predator Triton 300.

Laptop Gpu Performance In A Nutshell
Heres roughly what you can expect to see out of the various top GPUs in gaming laptops today. Keep in mind that that the older a game is, the less graphics capability it will require. New to our list is the Radeon RX Vega 56.
The chart above breaks down which resolutions, frame rates, and graphical settings you can expect from the most common laptop GPUs in most games people play. In it is everything from Nvidias top-end GeForce GTX 1080 to the lowly GeForce 940MX. New to our list is AMDs hard-to-find, but very fast Radeon RX Vega 56. It appears to be a near-direct transplant of the desktop GPU

These guidelines are based on Futuremarks 3DMark Sky Diver benchmark. Though the test isnt from a real video game, its value actually extends beyond a typical game. Some built-in benchmarks can be influenced by the CPU performance. 3DMark, on the other hand, is inherently a graphics benchmark, and it allows us to focus very narrowly on graphics performance.

Weve now added AMDs rare but fast Radeon RX Vega 56 to the mix
Note that 3DMarks Sky Diver test is a good indication of what to expect when playing lower-intensity or older blockbuster games. If you put a more intensive graphics load in it, youll see cards on the lower end of the power scale fall.

Aorus Gtx 1070 Gaming Box
True plug-and-play performance
The Gaming Box’s comes pre-installed with a GPU, you don’t have to worry about shelling out even more money for a graphics card. That makes it the cheapest option in the long run. But since you lose the ability to swap out GPUs, you might find yourself purchasing another Gaming Box in a few years when the GTX 1070 can’t cut the mustard.
Design: The Aorus GTX 1070 Gaming Box is hands-down the most adorable eGPU. Measuring 6.4 x 8.4 x 3.8 inches and weighing 5.2 pounds, it’s the smallest box we tested. It’s the perfect size for those with little space to spare. Similar to Aorus laptops like the X7 v6, the Gaming Box is swathed in matte black aluminum. The silver chrome avian logo gleams on the top front of the device. A pair of large grates sit along both sides of the system allowing for airflow and a nice view of the GTX 1070 Mini GPU inside. And if you want to game on the go, the Aorus also comes with a little carrying case for stow-and-go convenience.
Ports: Despite its diminutive size, the Gaming Box comes with plenty of ports. There are three USB 3.0 ports, an orange quick-charge USB 3.0 port, an HDMI, a DisplayPort, a pair of DVI-2 ports, a Thunderbolt 3 and the power jack.
Accessibility: Unlike other eGPUs, the Gaming Box comes with the GTX 1070 Mini GPU installed. The box is sealed, so you don’t have the luxury of switching out the graphics card at a later date.

Nvidia Geforce Rtx 3080 Benchmarks And Performance
You should know how this is going to go by now. The RTX 3080 is an absolute monster of a gaming GPU, and is able to deliver frame rates which make the $1,200 RTX 2080 Ti look like a thoroughly mid-range graphics card.
At the lowest 1080p resolution levels you are only getting a modest performance bump over the Ti, but that’s when you’re talking about frame rates getting into the 200+ level. At that point it’s less about graphics power and more about the rest of the system. Dropping in a chunk more FP32 cores ain’t going to do a lot there.
1080p benchmarks
But when you shift gears into 1440p and 4K resolutions, however, especially in the more demanding game engines, that’s when the RTX 3080’s performance chops really come to the fore. When the going gets tough I’ve been seeing frame rates jumps of between 25 percent and 43 percent over the RTX 2080 Ti.
You can now get higher ray traced frame rates than the previous generation could offer without it
That’s a huge performance uplift over the absolute top-end of not just the previous generation of Nvidia graphics cards, but what was the absolute fastest consumer GPU ever made. And when you consider the RTX 3080 isn’t even the most performant of the new Ampere generation you can see what the architectural changes have done for the gaming prowess of the new GeForce cards.

What To Look For In A Graphics Card

Below we explain how to pick the right GPU for the your display, why there are so many variants of the same Nvidia and AMD graphics cards, and a few factors you should consider when buying. Above all, you should buy the graphics card you need for the display youre using.
If youre gaming on a Full HD monitor, it would be a huge waste to buy a component designed to play games at 2160p or 1440p. Likewise, youll want a powerful graphics card to drive games playing on that premium 4K gaming monitor or 4K TV.
Weve laid out what are the best graphics cards to play games at 1080p, 1440p, and 2160p resolutions above, but here are some more general rules. For a decent to high-frame-rate Full HD experience, you should look at parts ranging from the GTX 1650 to the GTX 1660 Ti on Nvidias end. If youre looking at AMDs family, youll want a Radeon RX 5500 or up.
Jumping up to QHD resolutions will require a more capable graphics card, ideally an Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 5600 and up. 4K gaming using a single card is still a tough proposition, but thanks to recent developments its actually approachable with the latest graphics cards like the Nvidia RTX 2080 Super and AMD Radeon VII.

Amd Rx 6800 Xt Verdict
As a red team alternative to Nvidia’s high-end graphics cards, there have been few finer than the RX 6800 XT. A highly competitive card that comes soclose to a nominal performance differential to the RTX 3080, it is truly an enthusiast card worth consideration for any PC gamer with 4K in their sights.
When choosing between it and Nvidia’s second-tier Ampere card, however, it all comes down to a question of immediacy.
The RX 6800 XT is $50 cheaper, delivers high 4K performance, and a hefty VRAM increase over the available memory of the RTX 3080. However, it’s easy to argue that the extra $50 spent on the RTX 3080 is money well spenta small price to pay for greater 4K performance, much improved ray tracing, and DLSSall available today and with two year’s worth of developer support in the bank.
To return to the age-old fine wine analogy for AMD’s GPUsthat which supposes its GPUs only get better with agethere’s certainly hope for a finer vintage down the line with RDNA 2.
Still can’t decide between red or green? Check out our RTX 3080 review to get the complete picture as it stands today.
FidelityFX Super Resolution, for one, is a potential uplift on the way for RDNA 2. We don’t yet know anything of game support, availability, or how effective it may beall things we do already know of Nvidia’s DLSSbut AMD is promising a wide reaching and industry-standard approach through its GPUOpen initiative.
Nvidia Geforce Rtx 3080 Verdict
Pick your expletive, because the RTX 3080 Founders Edition is ****ing great. Far from just being the reference version of the ‘flagship’ Ampere graphics card, because of that cooler and redesigned PCB, it is the ultimate expression of the RTX 3080. And if you end up with another version of this fine-ass GPU then I’m afraid you’re likely to feel a little hard done by.
And chances are you might have to make do. The Founders Edition cards are not going to be produced in the same volumes as the third-party versions from the likes of Asus, Palit, and Colorful, to name but the few we’ve seen. This is a whole new generation of card, it’s seriously good, and that means stock will likely vanish of the RTX 3080 FE almost as soon as it’s launched, and may take a while to return and level out.
But I’d probably suggest you wait, because I think it’s worth it for such a good-looking, impressively performant version of the Ampere GPU. It might not necessarily be the coolest, looking at the vast heat-sinks on some of the AIB offerings, but it’s probably the one I’d be happiest having in my rig.
The extreme power demands are interesting however, and likely a stick that the competition will want to use to beat Ampere with. Though I would wager any concerns aren’t going to sway the average gamer away from picking Ampere for their powerful new GPU. If you want to be particularly green about the power you use gaming then you’re not running a desktop PC with a high-end discrete graphics card.
