The Lenovo Yoga 9i entered a crowded field of 2-in-1s and made a splash with a slick, svelte design and competitive price. Not only does it have latest 11th Gen Core i7 processor, a built-in stylus and long battery life, but its display is plenty colorful and its neat rotating speaker packs a surprising amount of punch.
Its port selection is thin, especially when compared with some of the bigger and more business-minded Lenovo laptops on this list. And while it delivers decent performance, the Yoga 9i isn’t quite as speedy as some of its competitors. But when it’s hundreds of dollars less than a similar Dell XPS 2-in-1 or an HP Spectre x360, and it comes with a built-in stylus, the Lenovo Yoga 9i is an excellent value and one of the best all-around Lenovo laptops you can buy.

The Lenovo Legion 5 Pro delivers enough power to play the latest games in an understated, well-built chassis for a fair price. With an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H CPU and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 GPU, it can handle nearly any game out there, and its big 16-inch display with slim bezels gives you plenty of room to appreciate them. The 165Hz refresh rate is also nice to have, especially for fast-paced action and driving games.

Are Thinkpads Better Than Macs
Its fair to say that, overall, the MacBook Pro 16-inch is better than the Lenovo ThinkPad P1. It has a faster chipset, and if you need the most performance, youre likely better off with it. Most notably, its a very efficient chip, so youre also very likely to get way better battery life out of the MacBook Pro.

Truly Premium: Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Titanium Yoga
Lenovo announced the ThinkPad X1 Titanium Yoga at CES 2021, hoping to deliver a convertible PC that is more tablet than notebook. You can read a lot more about the process and see how Lenovo’s radically thin ThinkPad X1 Titanium Yoga 5G came to be in Executive Editor Daniel Rubino’s writeup.
This laptop has a titanium lid and a magnesium-carbon chassis, providing a ton of strength and durability without a lot of weight. This 13.5-inch laptop weighs just 2.54 pounds and measures only 0.45 inches thin. The keyboard deck is as thin as an iPhone 12 Mini, meaning you can flip the display around and use the device as a tablet with ease.
The 13.5-inch touch display uses a 3:2 aspect ratio with 2256×1504 resolution, and it tacks on Dolby Vision with 450 nits brightness. Yes, it can be used for inking with an active pen. Inside, get up to an 11th Gen Intel Core i7-1180G7 vPro CPU, 16GB of LPDDR4x-4267MHz RAM, a 1TB M.2 PCIe SSD, and integrated Intel Iris Xe graphics. Intel Evo certification ensures snappy performance and long battery life.
The X1 Titanium Yoga doesn’t skimp on security measures , bringing dTPM 2.0 chip, Human Presence Detection, IR camera, webcam shutter, fingerprint reader, and Kensington lock slot. It also uses a haptic touchpad that mimics clicks instead of having any moving parts.

Battery Performance: Powerbridge Vs Rapidcharge
In terms of the battery, there is one big difference between the various models: The X1 Carbon and the T470s have only internal batteries that cannot be expanded or exchanged on the go. The X270, the T470 and the T570 are equipped both with an internal and an external, exchangeable battery, that can even be exchanged for a larger battery. Lenovo calls this a “PowerBridge”. The T470p is different again. This device has got only an external and no internal battery. The largest ThinkPad also provides the highest battery capacity in our comparison. If you equip the device with the large external 72 Wh battery, it can reach a maximum capacity of 105 Wh. The X270 and the T470 each provide a maximum of 95 Wh, the T470p can offer 72 Wh of battery capacity. Compared to its predecessor, the X1 Carbon’s battery has been enlarged to 57 Wh the T470s can only reach a maximum capacity of 51 Wh, which is the lowest of all comparison devices. This could have something to do with the peculiar build of the two internal batteries.
A difficult decision: The PowerBridge ThinkPads offer great flexibility, but in exchange for good battery runtime, you need to accept more weight and longer charging times. The X1 Carbon offers a long battery life in its standard configuration and a battery that recharges quickly.

Each year, Laptop Mag hands out titles to the best and worst companies in the mobile computer industry.
And for the second year in a row, the magazine has awarded Lenovo the title of Best Laptop Brand.
Wow!
If you follow the industry, you understand how impressive that is.
In 2015, they were listed as #6. In 2016, they were #4.
But over the past 12 months, Lenovos products received a record-breaking 10 Editors Choice awards from the Mag, leaving no doubt about who the industrys best company is.
What is is about these laptops that the experts love so much? How did they manage to climb the ranks and unseat major players like Apple and HP? What makes Lenovos laptops better than the rest?
Here are some of the things that earned Lenovo the best laptop brand title.

A Locked-and-Loaded Gaming Machine
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme is by far Lenovos strongest contribution to the gaming world. It supports several monitors, is VR-ready, and is capable of running for long hours without any signs of tiring.
Unlike most of the gaming laptops out there, this one is super compact. Less than an inch thick and only 3.75lbs, you can toss the ThinkPad in a backpack and take it wherever you need to go.
Best Gaming: Lenovo Legion 7i 15
Whereas you’re going to find mid-range performance from the Legion 5i 15, the Legion 7i 15 steps things up with more hardware options in an otherwise similar design. You can get up to a 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10875H vPro CPU, 32GB of DDR4-2933 RAM, and 1TB PCIe SSD coupled with a 512GB PCIe SSD , all backed up by an NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super Max-Q GPU. If you’re not looking to spend a ton of money, there are way more configurations available, starting with a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, and NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti GPU.
The generous port selection is mostly contained to a rear hub for easy cable management, with a few along the sides, like USB-A and 3.5mm audio, for connecting common accessories. Wi-Fi 6 is included for fast and reliable wireless internet, plus there’s an RJ45 Ethernet port if you’d rather go for wired internet. An 80Wh battery does its best, but don’t expect more than an hour or two.
The TrueStrike keyboard brings decent travel, whether you’re gaming or typing, and Corsair iCue RGB lighting lets you customize the look. The 15.6-inch display comes in a few options, though all are 1080p. The baseline option has a 144Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time, and 100% sRGB color. The mid-range option has a 144Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time, 100% AdobeRGB color, and VESA DisplayHDR 400. And finally, the high-end option has a 240Hz refresh rate, 1ms response time, 100% sRGB color, and VESA DisplayHDR 400.

Temperatures: Keeping A Cool Base Unit
As you do not always have a table available when working on the move, sometimes you will probably resort to using your laptop as a real laptop – on your lap. In order for that to be a comfortable option, the bottom of the base unit needs to remain relatively cool – in the best case not just while idle, but under load, too. The temperature limit here is at about 50 °C . Above that, using the device on your lap becomes quite uncomfortable after a while.
The T470 remains the coolest device. The T470s, the X1 Carbon and the T570 all have similarly good results . The T470p crosses the 50 °C limit, but then again it contains the strongest components. The X270 becomes surprisingly hot. It reaches temperatures of around 60 °C , which is noticeably higher than any other comparison device. At this temperature – which we have already measured with the i5-7200U version – the device cannot be used on the lap while working under load.
Upgrade Pick: Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9
Tested battery life: | 13 hours |
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 combines the larger screen, sturdy construction, and repairability of a business laptop with the size and weight of an ultrabook. Its easy to carry and fit in a bag, its battery will last through a full day of work, and its even lighter than most ultrabooks despite its larger screen. But the X1 is usually a little more expensive than the EliteBook 840 G7, and although its easier to repair than most ultrabooks, it doesnt have user-upgradable memory. And while the slim profile makes it nicer to tote around, there are a few ports missing that some of our other picks have, like an Ethernet port and an SD card reader.
Although we normally recommend laptops with 8 GB of memory, we think you should buy the version of the X1 Carbon with 16 GB of RAM instead of 8 GB, even if you dont edit large photos or work with big spreadsheets or databases. The X1 Carbon is relatively expensive, and you dont want to discover that you need more memory a year or two down the line.
Lenovos ThinkPad keyboards and trackpads have a reputation for excellence, and the X1 Carbon lives up to that reputation. Its slightly scooped, not-quite-square keys provide satisfying travel and are firm without being stiff, and the backlight is bright and even. None of the other business laptops we tested had bad keyboards, but all of the other models keyboards were either shallower or mushier than the keyboards on the ThinkPads we tested.

How To Find The Best Affordable Student Laptop
Here are some ways to save on a student laptop:
- Processors with multiple cores and clock speeds over 4.0 GHz are the new top-of-the-line. But the vast majority of students will do fine with anything over 2.0 GHz, especially if it’s multi-core.
- Hard drive size is less important nowadays, thanks to cloud storage and music/video streaming. If you find the right price and specs, don’t worry if the system has limited internal storage.
- Unless the laptop will be used for advanced gaming or computer-assisted design, a Full HD display will suit most students.
- Don’t buy add-on word processing or spreadsheet software until you ask about school discounts or the availability of cloud-based versions of these tools .

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon

Best overall ThinkPad you can buy
Specifications
Reasons to avoid
Pros: Lenovo took the best business laptop and beefed it up with 11th Gen Intel CPUs. You still get the ThinkPad X1 Carbon’s attractive, slim and durable chassis. Business users who travel frequently will appreciate the 15+ hours of battery life offered by the 1200p version. The 1200p screen was surprisingly bright. And in typical ThinkPad fashion, the latest 9th Gen X1 Carbon has a best-in-class keyboard that you’ll love typing on. It’s easily at the top of the best ThinkPads.
Cons: While we adore this laptop, it’s not truly perfect. It features a poor 720p webcam, no card slot and the touchpad is a bit small. On top of that, the IR camera doesn’t even come included by default, which is odd considering it’s a business notebook.
Reasons to avoid
Pros: Your average ThinkPad isn’t very wallet-friendly, but the ThinkPad X13 goes against the grain. For less than $1,000, this machine offers a speedy AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U CPU, a carbon fiber/magnesium alloy design and even a select few security features like a fingerprint reader and an optional IR camera for Windows Hello. Despite the price, Lenovo doesn’t skimp on the keyboard. Its keys felt super responsive. Those concave keys we’ve praised for years have what feels like an impossible amount of travel for a laptop this thin.

Our pick for the best laptop overall is the Dell XPS 13, which packs speedy performance and a gorgeous bezel-less display into an incredibly slim and lightweight design with long battery life. And thanks to Black Friday deals, you can currently get the Dell XPS 13 for a bargain price. If you can afford the more expensive model with an OLED touchscreen, it’s well worth the expense.
If you love the idea of an OLED laptop but want something a bit more affordable, Asus has an OLED-equipped Zenbook 13 that packs great power and amazing battery life, and it’s usually a few hundred bucks cheaper than the XPS 13.
Windows 11 is out now, but even eligible Windows 10 machines may not receive an upgrade offer until 2022. Many of the laptops on this list can now be bought with Windows 11 pre-installed, but not all of them. If you want a laptop right now that’s guaranteed to run Windows 11 and show it off to full effect, the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio is a great choice. It’s a powerful, well-built 2-in-1 that can do some decent gaming or video editing. The optional $129 Surface Slim Pen 2 stylus is a bit pricey, but it pairs nicely with the Studio and works well on the convertible’s 120 Hz touchscreen.
