What To Look Forward To
Microsoft has announced the Surface Studio Laptop, a successor to the Surface Book priced similarly and available in October 2021. Instead of a detachable screen, it has a two part folding hinge that allows the laptop to function in a laptop, tablet, or a hybrid mode that sets the display at an angle in front of a larger, haptic driven trackpad. Microsoft also announced the $130 Surface Slim Pen 2, which offers haptic feedback and greater responsiveness. This new stylus uses its haptics to simulate the “drag” of physical implements on physical media, like a paint brush across canvas or a pencil across paper. We’ll update this guide with new impressions as soon as we can, but in the meantime, we don’t think you should buy the older Surface Book 3 at this point, given the imminent, better hardware, unless you absolutely need a detachable screen and don’t want a Surface or Surface Pro.
If youre not sure youre choosing a Windows laptop, then youll need to consider Apples new M1 Pro- and M1 Max-powered MacBook Pros, available in 14 and 16 inch versions starting at $1999 and $2499 respectively. These are aimed at audio and video professionals, engineers, and creatives, and based on the performance of last years first M1-based MacBooks, we expect very competitive performance and excellent battery life compared against similarly equipped PC laptops. Well have more information about them soon.
Best Video Editing Laptop With An Oled Display: Dell Xps 15
The Dell XPS lineup has long been known for offering fantastic laptops in compact packages, and while that applies to the entire lineup, the Dell XPS 15 is extra special. It has a combination of performance and fantastic displays thats truly impressive for its size.
It comes with an incredible 3.5K OLED display, which is going to look stunning no matter what you do on it. Since its OLED, you get pure blacks and vivid colors with a 100,000:1 contrast ratio. Plus, it covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color space, making it great for color-sensitive work, and this is a 16:10 aspect ratio, which is great for productivity due to the increased vertical space. Its also a touchscreen, which you might find more intuitive to use in some cases, and the tiny bezels all around help the screen feel that much bigger.
A downside to the tiny bezels is the tiny webcam above the display, which is also only 720p resolution. The biggest problem is the size, though, as there isnt a lot of light coming in, and thus, images from the camera can look grainy even in decent lighting. There isnt space for an IR camera for Windows Hello, either, so youll have to make do with the fingerprint reader built into the power button, which is also a good solution.
The model below comes with an OLED display, Intel Core i7, GeForce RTX 3050 Ti, 16GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD storage, which should be good enough for most people. You can find more configurations on Dells website if you need something more.

It comes with an 8th Gen Intel Core i7 processor, spelling a processing speed of up to 4.6 GHz. Add to that a 16GB DDR2 RAM, 512 GB SSD, and battery power of over 12 hours make this laptop a robust system to run editing applications that deliver exemplary results.
The screen despite being small is loaded with a full HD 1970 x 1080 resolution display, thus making the process of editing videos all the more compelling.
Verdict: Stylish by design and a powerhouse by performance, Acer 3 Spin Convertible is a perfect blend of both design and robust technology that delivers a system that is simply too good for video editors to ignore. Jumping from one gaming tool to another, Lenovo Ideapad is another gaming laptop we believe is perfect for running video editing applications. If Acer Predator was intimidating with its exorbitant price, Lenovo Ideapad can be arguably categorized as a budget gaming laptop, which is not to say it doesnt perform.

Best Mac: Macbook Pro
Were not saying anything you probably dont know at this point, but the latest MacBook Pro models are absolutely superb laptops for video editing. Apple refreshed the MacBook Pro this year with its own Apple Silicon inside, but thats not all thats new.
Focusing on performance first, the latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are powered by Apples M1 Pro and M1 Max processors, with the latter being the more powerful. These ARM-based processors have 10 cores n total, two being efficient cores, and eight being performance cores. Additionally, the M1 Max can have up to a 32-core GPU, which can rival or beat many graphics cards for laptops, especially when it comes to video editing. Beyond that, the MacBook Pro models can be configured with up to 64GB of unified memory meaning the CPU and GPU get equal access to the entire memory buffer and up to a massive 8TB of SSD storage.
Apple Silicon is also extremely efficient compared to Intel or AMD processors, so you get just all that power even when youre away from an outlet, and without battery life taking such a huge hit. Other processors and dedicated graphics can get you similar power when connected to a charger, but performance usually drops when using the battery, and even then, battery life tends to be much shorter. For mobile performance, the 2021 MacBook Pro truly is a game changer.

Asus Proart Studiobook 16 Review: Dial
Nestled in the deck is aptly-named “Asus Dial.” It is embedded within the palm rest so the top of the dial is flush with the deck. The dial is slightly larger than a quarter and has a textured outer edge for gripping and rotating with one finger.
Asus told me I didn’t need to worry about accidentally pressing or rotating the dial because it’s located in the gap below your knuckles that is created when you rest your fingers on the keyboard. Asus was correct — for the most part. Once my hands were positioned on the home row, they never touched the dial. However, I accidentally brushed the dial a few times as I moved my fingers to and from the keyboard. And depending on the laptop’s orientation, I could feel the bottom-right edge of the dial against my thumb pad.
As a sucker for tactile inputs, I really enjoyed having this dial around. I found myself using it to change screen brightness and volume instead of reaching up to the shortcut keys. It showed how the dial can be useful for anyone, not only editors who need to flip between tools.
So, how does it work? Pressing down on the dial brings up a virtual version in the top-left corner of the display . It looks like a pie chart cut into equal parts, each with its own function. Turning the dial highlights a different tool which you can enable by pressing the dial again.
Best Overall: Surface Laptop Studio
When it comes to creator-focused laptops, none, in my opinion, are as cool as the Surface Laptop Studio. It may not be the most powerful laptop out there, but its got enough power to handle video editing just fine, and most importantly, it has a very cool form factor that makes it great for other kinds of creative work.
The Surface Laptop Studio is powered by Intel Core processors, specifically up to a Core i7-11370H. These processors are a part of Intels H35 series, and while theyre not quite as powerful as typical 45W processors, theyre still going to deliver strong performance, while also contributing to more reasonable battery life. The Core i7-11370H has four cores and eight threads, and it can boost up to 4.8GHz, so its still very fast. Plus, you have the option for NVIDIA graphics, specifically the GeForce RTX 3050 Ti, giving you some extra power for rendering certain effects, or even for gaming. Additionally, you can configure it with up to 32GB of RAM and 2TB of storage, giving you plenty of space for files and projects.
The Surface Laptop Studio also has a 1080p webcam, and if that doesnt sound too impressive, wait until you see the rest of the laptops on this list. Most laptops, even premium ones, still have 720p cameras, and this is one of best ones youll find. It also comes with Windows Hello support, so its a great camera all around.

What Kind Of Processor Is Best For Video Editing
One of the most important parts of your laptop when it comes to handling the resource-intensive process of video editing is your processor. The processor is what enables your computer to perform all of the tasks that you throw at it, including running specific software.
There are indicators about the processor that are worth looking at when picking out a laptop for video editing though specs dont always tell the full story.
One good indicator is how many cores your processor has. Cores allow your computer to multitask. The more cores your CPU has, the better equipped it will be to take on different tasks, like running multiple applications at the same time. An 8-core processor should do the trick for video editing, but there are certainly more powerful processors out there. In some cases, a 4-core processor capable of multithreading can make more use of fewer cores.
Another good indicator of a processors capabilities is clock speed. This is typically measured in gigahertz or GHz. When you see a processor that has a clock speed of 3GHz, that means that its internal clock beats 3 billion times per second and each beat is an opportunity for the processor to manipulate and process data. A clock speed of 3.0GHz is a good baseline to look for in a processor for your video editing laptop.

Mac Mini Best For Video Editing On A Budget
This is the cheapest device produced by Apple that can be used for video editing, being only $699 for the basic model. With this option you get a surprisingly good specification: Apples M1 chip with eight-core GPU, 8GB of RAM and a 265GB SSD.
Again, you can pay extra to get more RAM and storage, but even the base model is good for everyday video editing.
Like the Mac Pro, the Mac mini doesnt have its own display, so you’ll have to buy one for yourself. It supports up to two monitors at once one with a resolution of up to 6K and another up to 4K. One of these will connect to one of the two Thunderbolt ports, while the other will need to hook up to the Mac minis single HDMI port. Thats perfect for video editing.
Unlike some new Macs, the new Mac mini also has full-size USB ports. Two of them, to be precise. Thats handy if you have a lot of older peripherals and dont want to use an adaptor.
For such a well-priced machine, its a great Mac for video editing.

Asus Proart Studiobook 16 Review: Heat
Big engines get hot. Fortunately, the warmth generated by the turbocharged AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU in the Studiobook 16 are adequately dispelled by a clever cooling system.
Using dual 102-blade fans made from liquid crystal epoxy polymer, six heat pipes and seven sensors, the Studiobook 16 maintained reasonable temps when we played a 15-minute, 1080p YouTube video in our heat test.
At its hottest, the Studiobook reached 96 degrees Fahrenheit, one degree above our 95-degree comfort threshold. The parts of the notebook your skin comes in contact with, like the touchpad and keyboard , were pleasantly lukewarm.

The new MacBook Pro 16-inch has arrived, knocking the previous model off the top spot of our best laptops for video editing guide. We loved the 2019 model, but the new version improves on it in almost every way.
For a start, it’s got a brand-new design that offers a larger 16.2-inch screen, with mini LED technology that offers incredibly rich and detailed images. Add in ProMotion for fast refresh rates, plus HDR and support for the P3 wide color gamut, and you’ve got the best screen you can currently find on a laptop, making it a wonderful choice for video editors who want to see their footage at its very best.
Apple has also added a great selection of ports, including HDMI and a memory card slot, so you can plug in external monitors, or copy footage from a camera, without needing an adaptor. Add in the best battery life we’ve seen in a MacBook , and you’ve got the very best laptop for video editing you can buy.
Replacing the Intel-powered model from 2019, the MacBook Pro 16-inch comes with a choice of Apple’s powerful M1 Pro or M1 Max chips, which can handle even the most complex video editing tasks, as well as rendering and previewing your footage almost instantly.
It is rather large, however, so if you’re after something more portable, check out the 14-inch model below.

And that large screen really does help with video editing, allowing you to work in complete comfort. It’s pricey, but well worth the investment.
The Best Video Editing Laptop Features
Lets start with our list, but first, a rough idea of what you should look for when shopping for a video editing laptop.
If you want to invest in a laptop to use for video editing, it is best to know beforehand that video editing is a huge resource-taxing process. If you are serious about making a career out of it, invest in a laptop that can at least 8GB of RAM, SSD storage, at least a Core i5 processor, dedicated graphics card, and a good color-calibrated screen with a minimum resolution of 1920 * 1080.
Video editing software is no longer only available for Macs, with some good video editing software for Windows available now. That said, the laptop you choose will depend on the type of video editing software you will be using.
Having an upgrade for your laptop will allow you to work with bigger files, like editing HD videos with multiple layers, applying filters to the video with all the available features, and editing with footage in 1080p HD.
For example, if you use Adobe Premiere Pro, youll have to invest in a high-end laptop with at least 8GB of RAM and a high-end graphics card, but if youre using something like Shotcut elements or Premier doesnt require too much horsepower.

Ultimately, how much you’ll have to budget depends on whether you’re using your video-editing laptop only for quick work in the field, or whether you plan to bring it back to the studio, plug it in, and use it as your primary machine.
