How Powerful Does My Laptop Need To Be
In short: If you need a laptop for light use and note taking, look for Intel Pentium or Intel Core i3 and at least 4GB of Ram for a great experience. Go for Intel Core i5 and i7 and AMD Ryzen 5 and 7 and at least 8GB of Ram if youre a heavy user. Look for dedicated graphics from Nvidia and AMD if you want to game.
This really matters if youre planning on using a laptop for photo or video editing, or are an otherwise very heavy user, opening lots of programs and browser tabs.
When looking at laptop processors, youll see two main specifications beyond the product name: clock speed and number of cores.
Think of clock speed as the speed limit on a road and the number of cores as the number of lanes. As on a road, depending on traffic conditions the tasks being done on your computer a road might see a greater benefit from more lanes or a higher speed limit.
In the simplest way possible, more of both is better, and each of our reviews will describe what sort of tasks a laptop is good for.
Think of Ram like a desk and your hard drive like a filing cabinet. You pull files out of the cabinet and it takes a while, but once theyre on your desk, you can reach for them instantly. The same is true of Ram once you have loaded a file from the hard drive, its now in the Ram and can be accessed almost instantaneously.

The Dragonfly is pricey, and there are cheaper business laptops that will suit the needs of most professionals just fine. But if youre looking for the best of the best, its the unambiguous winner.
Amd Ryzen In A Nutshell
This initial three-tiered approach also made it pretty easy to compare AMDs Ryzen chips against the competition. The Ryzen 3 was an entry-level alternative to the Intel i3, the Ryzen 5 was a mainstream counterpart to the Intel i5, and the Ryzen 7 was pitched in opposition to the performance offered by an Intel i7.
Then, in 2018, AMD introduced their second wave of Ryzen CPUs. Relying on a new 12nm manufacturing process and Zen+ architecture, this second series of Ryzen CPUs was broken out into four families. The Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 all returned. This reincarnated Ryzen family offered higher boosted clock speeds, reduced power consumption
This time around, AMD also topped out the range with a set of ultra-high-end CPUs called the Threadripper.
Where the mainline Ryzen range offers an impressive 8 cores and 16 threads, the Threadripper series starts at 12 cores and 24 threads and goes all the way up to 32 cores and 64 threads. Its wild.
In late 2019, AMD updated their Ryzen portfolio. However, they didn’t just upgrade the Ryzen 3, 5 and 7. They also introduced a new option to the range: the Ryzen 9.

Screen Size And Graphics
Therere 2 main sorts of graphics cars, dedicated and integrated. Integrated graphic cards sometimes named built-in, and are fine for daily use such as web browsing or email writing. You will be fine watching films on YouTube or looking at images, but more complex jobs might be slow. Dedicated graphics card have more up to date technology and can handle intensive jobs such as gaming and video editing. The higher card will produce great framer rates when gaming, though, this can drain battery life. For the best performance, you might also consider a laptop with dual cards. These machines are capable to provide you much solid performance than if you were to utilize individual graphic cards. Always consider a bigger 15-inch display size for the best viewing experience for games and films.
What You Need To Know About Hardware
As with any computer, hardware determines what a laptop can do. Better components will naturally be more expensive, so it is important to consider the laptops primary role and choose hardware suitable for that purpose. A laptop purchased to browse the internet or write documents, for example, doesnt need a high-end processor or video card.

How Much Ram Do I Need
We recommend 8 GB of memory for most people. That should be enough for web browsing, editing documents and spreadsheets, light gaming, and occasional video and photo editing. But consider stepping up to 16 GB if you regularly use high-end applications like Adobe Photoshop or Premiere, if you play visually demanding games, if youre doing 3D drafting, or if you work in web and app development. Many laptops cant have more memory added after you buy them, so be sure to get one with 16 GB of memory now if you think youll need it that usually adds $100 or $200 to the price tag.
What’s The Most Important Gaming Laptop Component
When it comes to gaming, the obvious answer is the graphics card, but that’s where things have gotten a little more complicated recently. With GPU performance now so dependent on cooling, you have to pay attention to what wattage a graphics card is limited to and what chassis it’s squeezed into.
As we said at the top, an RTX 3080 confined in an 18mm chassis will perform markedly slower than one in a far chunkier case with room for higher performance cooling.

The Best Laptop Of 2021
The late-2020 MacBook Air, powered by Apples M1 processor, is the best laptop you can buy. The base model, which includes 8GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, starts at $999.
Appearance-wise, this laptop has a lot in common with the Intel-powered MacBook Air that Apple released earlier this year, including the same 2560 x 1600 screen, Touch ID, 720p webcam, fingerprint sensor, and scissor-switch keyboard.
But the new processor is the star of the show here its fast. In our testing, it handled intense photo- and video-editing workloads better than almost any Intel-powered laptop weve tried this year. It was also able to run Shadow of the Tomb Raider at close-to-playable frame rates, which is quite a feat for integrated graphics. At launch, these apps hadnt yet been optimized for the M1 processor and were running through Apples Rosetta 2 translation layer but they still worked fine.
And the processing power didnt even weigh down the battery life: we got between eight and 10 hours of sustained work.
Another benefit of the M1 processor is that it enables the MacBook Air to run iPhone and iPad apps natively on macOS. As of this writing, there still isnt a huge selection of mobile apps available, and some that have been released arent quite optimized for the laptop screen. Still, its a benefit we can look forward to as time goes on.

Do I Need A Rugged Laptop
Rugged laptops are essential for some businesses, especially those that employ workers in rugged or remote conditions. The Panasonic Toughbook is the highest-profile rugged laptop line, and it’s very popular with public service professionals as well as private companies that require ultra-resilient laptops .
Rugged laptops and tablets often offer accessories that are not available for mainstream laptops, such as vehicle mounts and vehicle battery packs . Rugged laptops are also typically waterproof, drop-proof, and able to be used with gloves on . However, they’re also usually larger and clunkier than consumer or business laptops, and they can be expensive once you factor in accessories.
Most businesses do not need rugged laptops, but if yours does, don’t even bother looking at standard consumer or business machines. Instead, start by checking out the Toughbook by Panasonic, Dell Rugged Extreme and Getac lines.

How To Pick The Best Laptop For You
So, what makes a laptop worth buying? First, it needs to offer excellent value for money. That means budget laptops below the $400/£400 price point need to still offer good performance and build quality.
Meanwhile, ultra-expensive devices need to justify their high price tags with best-in-class performance, premium build quality and lengthy battery lives.
If you want something to work on, a laptop with a modern processor, at least 8GB of RAM and a large screen are worth considering.
For gaming, you’ll want a gaming laptop with a dedicated graphics card and fast and responsive screen.
Check out our guide on what you should look for when buying a new laptop at the end of this page for more in-depth advice on buying a laptop.
Should I Get A Touch Screen
To take advantage of the touch-screen support present throughout Windows 10 and Chrome OS, youll want to seek out a touch-enabled laptop, and perhaps even a digital stylus to write or draw on it. Some Windows 10 laptops come in both touch- and non-touch versions, so check the specifications on what youre buying carefully. Glossy screens typically feature touch support, while most matte screens designed to filter out glare from ambient lighting do not.
Since many gaming laptops have matte displays, touch support is much harder to find among their ranks. Many gaming laptops above budget-level do offer high-refresh-rate screens, though. Hardcore gamers or esports hounds who are looking for silky-smooth visuals to give them a competitive edge will want to maximize the number of frames per second that their screen can display, and can do so by opting for a screen with a 120Hz or greater refresh rate.
However, before you pay a major premium for a high-refresh screen, youll want to be sure that the graphics chip, or GPU, is muscular enough to push the kinds of games you play at a high enough frame rate to make a difference. Standard laptop screens have 60Hz refresh rates, and if youll be playing games at 60 frames per second or lower, in most cases a high-refresh screen wont confer much benefit.
