Design: The Surface Laptop 4 Is A Laptop And The Surface Pro 7 Is A Tablet
The key difference between the two products is that theyre different form factors. The Surface Laptop 4 is a clamshell notebook while the Surface Pro 7 is a tablet. There are pros and cons to each, and it depends on your preference.
If youre looking for something more traditional, thats where the Surface Laptop 4 comes in. Its a laptop, just like your previous PC probably was. It does actually have Surface Pen support, but its not very practical to use.
The Surface Pro 7 is designed for use with a pen. If you like to draw or take handwritten notes, this is definitely the way to go. You can also attach a keyboard to it, turning it into a more traditional computer.
Despite being a tablet, you dont miss out on ports with the Surface Pro 7. Well, you dont miss out any more than you would with a Surface Laptop 4. They both have a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, and a Surface Connect port. One advantage in the Surface Laptop 4 is the ability to remove the keyboard and replace the storage. This is something that showed up in the business-focused Surface Pro 7+, but not in the Pro 7.
They also have very different styles. The Surface Laptop 4 is made out of aluminum, and it comes in four colors. You can get it in Platinum, Matte Black, Sandstone, and Ice Blue. It weighs in at 2.79 or 2.84 pounds, depending on the model you pick, while the magnesium Surface Pro 7 starts at 1.7 pounds. Of course, a Type Cover will add on an additional 0.68 pounds.
Surface Laptop : $799
This brings the base cost of these Surface devices in line with what you would expect from some high-end smartphones. As the least expensive item at base price, the Surface Pro wins in this category . It should be noted that any additional features, services, and accessories/upgrades will affect the final cost of a Surface device.
However, cost isnt always the best criteria to use for choosing a productivity tool. There are many other factors to consider that may prove to be far more important when choosing a productivity tool for your business.

Reasons To Buy Microsoft’s Surface Laptop
Microsoft’s Surface Laptop
Jay McGregor
Im still working my way through my full Surface Laptop review, but heres a teaser: its good.
So good, in fact, Im reasonably certain that Microsoft shouldve started its foray into hardware here, rather than arriving at the Laptop after the more usual Pro and Book.
In any case, there are a few good reasons to make the Surface Laptop your next computing purchase – and few solid reasons not to. Here are my top 5.
Dont forget to check out my buying guides for buying and Samsungs Galaxy S8 over the iPhone 7.
Its a fine lookin piece of kit
Theres an often employed concept in sports called ‘marginal gains’. In essence, athletes – and their coaches – seek to improve their performance by making small, fractional, percentage gains in training in the hope that they cumulatively add up to a dramatic performance improvement.
Thats very much how I see Microsofts attitude towards hardware design. Demos and briefings are now dominated by the Microsoft representative drawing my attention towards concealed hinges, speaker position adjustments, rounded off edges, balance and fan positioning.
Individually, this type of tinkering probably isnt worthy of note. Combined, they produce a laptop thats perhaps one of the most aesthetically pleasing Ive ever reviewed. For its first go at a non 2-in-1 computer, Microsoft is knocking on Apples door.

The Best Surface For Content Creators: Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio

With an advanced magnetic hinge system that lets you pull the 14-inch screen forward to use as an easel or a digital canvas, the Surface Laptop Studio is an innovative, excellent category-defying device. It offers a robust blend of unique features, operating-mode flexibility, computing power, and portability. Digital artists and on-the-go professionals who need the flexibility of a 2-in-1 convertible laptop and some reasonably powerful graphics horsepower will appreciate it most. The Nvidia RTX GPU is fine for light PC gaming, but don’t look at this as a gaming laptop, as it’s much too expensive and not quite powerful enough to buy just for that.

Battery Life On The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go
The Surface Laptop Go may be incredibly portable, but youll need to top it off if youre using it for long periods of time. On our battery test, which continuously browses the web, streams video and runs OpenGL tests all over Wi-Fi with the screen at 150 nits brightness, it ran for just 7 hours and 42 minutes. Good thing the charger is small, too.
The Surface Go 2 lasted the longest out of the comparison group, at 11:38, while the AMD Ryzen-based Acer Swift 3 ran for 11:09. The Apple MacBook Air also offered more endurance at 9:31.

Its 2019, and Windows 10 has too many useless and annoying features. Dont get me wrong: Windows 10 has gotten better and, overall, I love it compared to Windows 8. But some things just need to go.

Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 Review: Performance
- 11th-gen Intel Core i7 and 16GB of RAM combine for solid performance
- Benchmarks scores trail behind Dell XPS 13 and MacBook Air and Pro
- Graphics good enough for 30 fps on less demanding games
Unless your job involves playing Cyberpunk 2077 with the settings cranked up, Microsofts Surface Laptop 4 can handle pretty much anything youd throw at it in the course of an average workday. Our review units 16GB of RAM and 11th Gen Intel i7 CPU gave it enough pep to handily tackle as many basic tasks as I could subject it to, including 20+ tabs spread across four Chrome windows arrayed in such a way that I could watch two 4K YouTube videos, a Twitch stream, and keep an eye on my Spotify playlist while writing this review.
The Surface Laptop 4 we reviewed put up a decent score of 4,829 in our Geekbench 5 performance test, which is good but not great when stacked up against similarly-priced competitors like the Dell XPS 13 or even cheaper Windows notebooks like Lenovos convertible ThinkBook 14s Yoga .
The Surface Laptop 4 has enough pep that I could have two 20+ Chrome tabs open, watch two 4K YouTube videos, a Twitch stream and keep an eye on my Spotify playlist while writing this review.
In our performance tests our Surface Laptop 4 review unit delivered an average of 30.46 frames per second playing Sid Meiers Civilization VI: Gathering Storm at 1080p, though that dropped down to a 27.9 fps average when we boosted the resolution up to the native 1504p.
Where Will You Be Using It
If you need to take your Surface device out and about, then obviously the Studio 2 is no good, but let’s go beyond that. The main thing here is going to be size and weight, The Surface Pro 8 is lighter than a lot of laptops, coming in at around 890 grams with the keyboard cover, whereas the Surface Book 3 is a hefty device weighing over double at around 1905 grams.
Whether you expect to be at a desk or using the device on your lap matters a lot too. The convertible devices, with the exception of the Surface Book, are quite difficult to use on your lap due to the kickstand design. The Laptops and Surface Book on the other hand will be great for either scenario.

What You Need To Know About Microsoft 365
Microsoft 365 is the name for the paid service that has replaced Office 365. The service has a different name, but it offers the same apps available with Office 2021, plus the benefits of the previous name. The only difference is that you will also get many new extras.
Microsoft 365 is the new brand for the paid service that replaces Office 365.
Since this is a paid service, you will be making payments every month to use the suite of apps, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, Access, and others on all your devices . However, this is as long as only five devices are accessing the account at one time.
Also, if you get the Family subscription plan, you can share the account with up to five additional users for a total of up to six people with one plan.
Perhaps the most significant advantage is that you never have to think about upgrades ever again. When you install the Office apps from Microsoft 365, you will always be in the latest version. This means that once the apps are installed, they will automatically receive security and maintenance updates, improvements, and new features as soon as they are ready. For instance, once available, you will be able to install the redesigned version of Office on Windows 11 or Windows 10.
Buying Guide For Best Microsoft Laptops
Microsoft laptops are aimed at specific segments of the consumer market: business people and students. The software giant, best known for providing its operating system to PCs made by any company without an apple in its logo, has carved out quite a niche with its own laptops. These are tailored toward the needs and budgets of professionals and students, both of whom need ample computing power at a reasonable price.
Choosing the right Microsoft laptop can feel like a guessing game. As with any laptop, you need to consider how youll be using it and what your needs are. Is it mostly just for business apps or schoolwork? Do you want to be able to do some gaming on it as well? Are you hoping to use it as a tablet sometimes? How often will you be carrying the laptop around versus using it at a desk? These are some of the factors youll need to think about before you make your purchase.

Surface Pro X: Best For Early
The Surface Pro X is no longer the best-looking Surface 2-in-1 Microsoft offers now that the Surface Pro 8 has adopted its design, but it still looks fantastic. Thin bezels surround a gorgeous 13-inch display, and you now have the option of a Wi-Fi-only model or one with built-in LTE connectivity. We recommend adding the optional keyboard and Microsoft Pen accessory pack to convert it from a tablet to a full-on laptop though it will cost you $140 for the keyboard, or bundle it with the Slim Pen and pay $270 for both.
Instead of using Intels latest processor to power it, the Pro X uses an ARM-based processor developed in partnership with Qualcomm. One benefit of switching to an ARM processor is improved battery life, which currently comes in around 15 hours, and performance gains. It mixes classic Windows with fast mobile performance and long battery life.
Developers need to rebuild their apps to support a different processor, meaning some apps simply wont work, while other apps will run, but are often sluggish and buggy on the Pro X. But Microsoft has made several improvements in Windows 11 specifically for the type of processor that the Pro X uses.
The Surface Pro X starts at $899 for the base model, with an SQ 1 processor, 128GB of SSD storage and 8GB of RAM. If you want the slightly faster SQ 2 processor and LTE connectivity, youre looking at $1,499, and it includes 16GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage.
Heat On The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go

We took skin temperatures while running our Cinebench R20 loop to test the laptop under a heavy load. The laptop fans definitely whirred throughout , but the laptop wasnt untouchably hot.
The center of the keyboard, between the G and H keys, measured 43.8 degrees Celsius . This wasnt exactly comfortable but not usable either. The touchpad was cooler, hitting 32 degrees Celsius .
The hottest spot was on the bottom of the laptop, by the hinge. It reached 49.5 degrees Celsius . Could I stand this heat on my lap? Yes. Would I prefer it on a desk? Also yes.

Audio On The Microsoft Surface Laptop Go
When I listened to The AtarisThe Boys of Summer, the music was plenty loud but kind of flat. The vocals and guitars were clear enough, but the drumline wasnt particularly powerful, and I could barely make out the bass at all. That type of performance is pretty average for a budget machine, but this configuration is out of budget territory.
For uses that dont have that level of audio detail, like video conferencing, the Surface Laptop Go is fine, though thats where Im most likely to use headphones anyway.
The New Heavyweight Champ Replacing The Surface Book Line
Of all the announcements in the September 2021 Surface event, the debut of the Surface Laptop Studio might be the most interesting. This hybrid device replaces the Surface Book as the logical option for demanding PC users who want maximum performance as well as a way to draw and sketch with a Surface Pen, but without the detachable Type Cover of the Surface Pro.
The clever fabric hinge in the Surface Laptop Studio allows the display to slide forward so that it covers the keyboard at an angle that’s made for presentations or gaming with an external controller. Push a little more and the display slides into studio mode for use with the new Slim Pen 2. (The pen has its own holder/charger under the front of the keyboard.
Like the Surface Pro 8, this new laptop includes 11th Generation Intel Core processors with a pair of USB Type-C ports that support Thunderbolt 4. The 14.4-inch touch display can work at a 120Hz refresh rate. Configuration options allow you to bump the standard 16 GB of RAM to 32 GB, and a 2 TB high-performance SSD.
The Surface Book Laptop Studio might be right for you if …
Pricing: Surface Laptop Studio options are straightforward. The least expensive model, with an 11th Gen Intel Core i5 CPU, 16 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB SSD, runs $1600 the priciest configurations come with an 11th Gen Intel Core i7 CPU, 32 GB of RAM, and either a 1 TB or 2 TB SSD for $2700 and $3100, respectively.

Which Offers More Apps Chromebooks Or Windows Pcs
Games certainly fall into the category of local apps, but so do the numerous apps and utilities that can make everyday tasks a little easier. Here, its also a mixed bag.
Chrome apps can be found within the Chrome Web Store, where there are both utilities, educational tools, and more.
Android apps can include both games as well as mobile productivity apps. There were almost . Microsoft has stopped publicizing the number of Windows apps. That number says nothing about the quality of apps in either store, obviously, but it does indicate that Android has many more.
Not every Android app will run on a Chromebook. Chromebooks dont include GPS chips, so location-specific apps wont work. Ditto for those who rely on rear cameras that the Chromebook may or may not havePokemon Go, for instance.
One of the strengths of Windows, though, lies within its historical archive of bits of code, utilities, and other apps that have collected in dusty old hard-drive folders, FTP sites, and elsewhere. Batch resizing apps for images, custom calendar apps, macro managerseveryone has their favorites, and Chrome OS simply cant compete. On the flip sideand this is importantChrome OS doesnt include the type of crapware Windows PCs also sometimes ship with, requiring apps like CCleaner to tidy up.
