Your Laptop Battery Will Naturally Lose Capacity In Time

You are going to lose capacity with your laptop battery over time. This happens when it is subjected to a number of charging cycles. The more charging cycles, the more your battery will lose its capacity. All laptop batteries are different, and on average, you can expect them to last for around 500 full charging cycles.

Having said that, you should discharge your laptop battery from time to time. It is not a good idea to keep your battery at the highest charge level all of the time. When you let your battery discharge, make sure that you do not let the charge level go down to nothing, as this can cause damage to it.

In an ideal world, it would be great if you could instruct your laptop just to charge your battery to a 50% level and then leave it at that. This is not currently possible to do. Not only that, but you need to understand that if your laptop battery is subjected to high temperatures, it will also lose its capacity a lot faster.

So, if you wanted to take out your laptop battery and store it somewhere, you need to make sure that you find a cool place for it. Take out your laptop battery when it has achieved a 50% charge level, as this will help prolong its life.

Wi-Fi is an indispensable feature, and most laptops ship with a standard called 802.11n. This can operate on two frequencies, with most mainstream laptops supporting 2.4GHz and premium laptops supporting both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The difference: 2.4GHz has greater range, but lesser speed. It also has more chance of interference, either from your neighbour’s Wi-Fi or from other implements that use the 2.4GHz spectrum, like microwaves and cordless phones.

5GHz has less chance of interference and higher speed, but has smaller range â you’ll find your speed drop off dramatically the further you get away from your router. Your wireless router will also need to support 5GHz for you to take advantage of it. This is pretty easy to spot, as usually you’ll see a reference to “dual band” somewhere.

You might have also heard of something called 802.11ac â this is 5GHz wireless, but with significantly greater speed and range than 802.11n. At the time of writing, although you can buy 802.11ac routers, this isn’t supported natively in any laptops; you’ll have to buy a USB wireless adapter to use it to its full potential.

Y Series : Fanless Designs Mediocre Performance

Good For: Portability, Fanless Design, Light ProductivityBad For: Battery Life, Serious Number Crunching

When you’re shopping for a laptop, be wary of the Y series , which you may see branded with Core i5 / Core i7 . Intel Y Series processors have a very-low TDP of 7 watts, which allows manufacturers to use them in fanless, super-thin laptops. Unfortunately, most of those laptops also have low-capacity batteries or high-powered screens so they actually end up with worse battery life than competitors with more powerful U-series processors.

Do I Need Dedicated Graphics

Should you Buy a Gaming Laptop for School/College/University?

A graphics processor thats built into the CPU is perfectly adequate for most everyday laptop use. Youll know youre looking at an IGP if you see a reference to Intels HD Graphics, UHD Graphics, or Iris as the graphics solution on an Intel-CPU laptop . An IGP shares the CPUs processor cores, memory, or both. The amount of memory available to the integrated graphics chip is usually fixed, so increasing the amount of system memory wont result in better graphics performance.;

Most gamers will want to consider a discrete GPU with its own dedicated computing resources. Even a budget gaming GPU will offer an immense advantage over an integrated graphics processor when it comes to playing 3D games. At the high end, hardcore gamers should look for Nvidias latest GeForce RTX GPUs.;

With gaming laptops, the level of GPU you need is very much tied to the frame rate you want to run at the laptops native screen resolution, and the kind of games you play. Thats where our reviews come in handy. We test with several demanding gaming and industry-standard benchmarks to give you a relative sense of a laptops graphics performance. Should I Get A Longer Laptop Warranty

Most laptop makers offer one-year warranties on parts and labor. These standard plans are limited, so they won’t cover accidents that stem from spilling a drink on the keyboard or dropping the system on the sidewalk. Fortunately, your credit-card issuer likely covers such mishaps for a short period of time after you buy a new product, and it also may extend the manufacturer’s warranty. Check your account benefits guide for details.

If your credit-card issuer doesnt cover you, some laptop makers will happily sell you extended warranties. Apple, Dell, HP, and Lenovo all offer wide ranges of extended warranties and coverage for accidental damage. Expect to spend $100 to $300 for these options. Our rule of thumb is that if a warranty costs more than 15 percent of the laptop’s purchase price, you’re better off spending the money on backup drives or services that minimize downtime.

Of course, you can’t put a price tag on peace of mind. There are instances when the logic board or the displaythe most expensive parts of a laptopfail, and while rare, such a catastrophe can cost you half of what the laptop is worth in repair costs.

How Long Do Gaming Laptops Last

For general tasks like sending emails, using a word processor, browsing the internet, and watching videos, even budget-friendly laptops should last 4-5 years at a minimum .

However, if youre a gamer, the more demanding nature of playing video games means that you should expect a shorter lifespan for your laptopat least, in terms of its ability to run modern games.

As time goes on, modern games advance in graphics and complexity and, as a result, need better hardware to run.

So, a mid-range gaming laptop may only last a few years before it starts having trouble running newer games.

Of course, though, the more you spend on your gaming laptop now, the longer you should expect it to be able to handle newer games.

But, from a general standpoint, you can use the following to help you determine how long a gaming laptop should last:

  • Less than $700: 2-3 years
  • $700-$1,500: 3-4 years
  • $1,500 or more: 4-6 years

This, of course, is a very general idea of the average lifespan of a gaming laptop. Another factor that comes into play is what you expect out of your in-game experience.

If you only like to play your games on the highest graphics settings, youre going to want to upgrade to a newer and better laptop sooner.

If you dont mind playing games on lower graphics settings, you can probably get another couple years out of your laptop.

So having looked at everything you need on your laptop, its time to look the operating system that you can work with. The most distinct operating systems that youre going choose from are Windows OS and MAC OS.

Dont mind about Linux at this as you can choose to install it at any time and on any kind of laptop. MAC OS is manufactured by Apple and only runs on Apple machines, so if youre that person with Apple everything, MAC is for you. The rest of the computers can run all operating systems apart from the MAC Operating System. Something to note is the price, Apple laptops are a bit more expensive than the rest.

Sure, gaming on a desktop at home is nice, but sometimes its nice to get out and game at your local coffee shop and pretend to be social. Whether you build your own gaming laptop or buy a preconfigured gaming laptop, you should definitely consider the following first:

  • What games do you want to play?;If youre looking to play Age of Empires 2 and dont plan on playing anything else, you probably dont need a top-of-the-line gaming laptop. First consider the kinds of games you want to play and the specs they require.
  • What laptop OS supports the games you want to play?;Unfortunately, not every game is available on every OS. Make sure that the games you want to play are playable on your chosen OS.

Once you decide on those fundamental questions, specs come into play, namely; the GPU. At a minimum, if youre looking to run games at 1080p youll need a GPU with 6GB of VRAM. To run at a 4K resolution, we advise 8GB or more of VRAM.

Understanding Your Current Intel Processor

Before looking at buying new processors, its worth giving your current Intel CPU a quick once-over to get a better picture of where your PCs power and performance level currently sits. The fastest way to do this is usually to open up your Control Panel, go to System and Security subheader and select System.

From here, youll get a quick overview of the CPU, RAM and OS currently installed on your PC. Under processor, you should be given the full title for your current Intel CPU. For example, Intel Core i7-4790 or Intel Core i7-8500U . Youll also be given a rough indicator of your CPUs clock speed, measured in Ghz. Well come back around to this and go into a bit more detail later in this article.

For now, focus on the long string of numbers attached to your CPUs name. This detail might initially seem a bit intimidating and/or confusing. However, understanding what those numbers mean isnt actually all that difficult to parse.

Breaking things down using our earlier example:

The first part of the name – in this case, Intel Core – tells you that this CPU is made by Intel and is part of their Core series of processors.

The Core is Intels biggest and most-popular range of products, so youll probably find this prefix on most consumer-grade desktops and notebook PCs.

Intel do offer other ranges of processors like Celeron, Pentium and Xeon. However, this article is focused on understanding Intels Core processorsso we’re just gonna pretend they don’t exist for now.

Why you should buy a Laptop over a Desktop – Why Laptops are Better than a Desktops

Dont care about cutting-edge design and powerful components? You might be satisfied with a cheap laptop. Todays market is flooded with basic but full-featured models with list prices under $500. Shopping holidays like Prime Day and Black Friday, and actual holidays like Presidents Day, bring frequent sales, discounting some of these models even further. Most of them will handle word processing and e-mail checking just fine, but theyll struggle with other tasks, such as keeping many web browser tabs open at once.;

Discrete Versus Integrated Graphics

With the introduction of Intel HD Graphics on Core i3 processors and above, the bar has now been raised enough for integrated graphics to suit most peoples’ needs, whether that’s video watching, image manipulation, web browsing or even light gaming.

If you want to play 3D standalone games, though, you’ll need a dedicated GPU â try to grab something with at least 512MB to 1GB of video RAM. Ignore the salesperson who insists that video memory is an indication of performance; while larger video memory does tend to be paired with higher performing cards, it’s not the thing that’s primarily responsible for the performance increase.

For our money, at this point in time, gaming starts with the GeForce GT 640M, although hardcore gamers will want something from the GTX family. We find notebookcheck.net to be an excellent resource to help decode the crazy number of video card variants out there.
