Best For Creative Pros Seeking Power And Portability

Pros

  • Speedy performance from Apple M1 chip
  • Brilliant Retina display
  • Stingy standard 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM
  • No touch screen

With the powerful Apple MacBook Pro, available in multiple screen sizes, and the slim, efficient MacBook Air, there are two broad Mac laptop families to chose between nowadays. They’re both excellent ones. With similar specs and exterior styling across both the Air and the Pro, deciding which one is best for you largely comes down to which size screen you need and how much processing power your typical computing tasks require.

Picking between the two families is the easy part. Getting down to the nitty gritty within each family is trickier, though. The 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air are now available with Apple’s M1 processor, which promises speedy performance but might not be the right choice for everyone. We’ll walk you through the processor choices as well as all the different CPU, memory, storage, and other component options that Apple offers on its latest MacBook laptops.

Touch Bar But No Touching

There’s a unique aspect to the MacBook Pro models that you must consider if the “Pro” part of the name applies to you: the Touch Bar. This is a long, thin, touch-enabled OLED screen that comes mounted forward of the MacBook Pro’s keyboard. The Touch Bar is unique to Apple and highly specialized. It’s Apple’s answer to touch gestures in Windows 10, and it’s most useful in professional apps like the Adobe Creative Suite and Apple’s Final Cut Pro X, which let you use the Touch Bar to scrub through a video timeline, switch tool selections, and much more. This feature is not available on the MacBook Air.

The Touch Bar is not a substitute for the touch screens that you’ll find on many Windows ultraportables, however. You cannot use it to interact with basic screen elements like the menu buttons on websites, nor can you use it to draw on the screen. An Apple iPad or a Windows laptop is your best alternative for these tasks. Fortunately, the trackpads on all Apple laptops are excellent, with oversize glass surfaces and virtual “haptic” feedback instead of a physical click mechanism.

If you’re a video or photo editor, you’ll want to strongly consider the 16-inch model with an AMD Radeon Pro graphics card, which can speed up editing tasks. The 13-inch MacBook Pro model comes with either Intel integrated graphics or M1 graphics, but does not offer the choice for a discrete GPU.

Is The Macbook Pro The Best Apple Laptop For You

What

Apples new MacBook Pro laptops are gathering critical acclaim for the raw performance of the hardware the jury is still out on the softwares quality control. Reading the reviews , many will be tempted towards Tim Cooks supercar of a laptop. These are objectively the best laptops from Apple if all you want is the biggest number. But what if you dont want the biggest and best number, and you would rather the best laptop for your needs.

Do you really need a digital supercar for your day to day computing?

Lets face it, if theres one thing you can expect from Apple with a new high-end product, its that the pricing is going to be high. Thats true with these new MacBook Pros. While Apple has worked hard to bring an entry-level model $1 under the psychological barrier of $2000, that model has been pared back theres no fast charging mains adaptor, the M1 Pro is pared back from a 10-core CPU to an 8-core, and from a 16-core GPU to a 14-core, presumably through chip binning.

If youre going to decide to make some compromises to get yourself a new MacBook, then this stripped back 14-inch MacBook Pro is the one that Apple clearly wants you to consider.

  • What About The Macbook Pro 16

When the MacBook Pro 16 came out in 2019, we said it was the best Mac in years. Its funny how quickly things change, because at the moment, its lack of an M1 chip makes it the least attractive MacBook on offer unless you have specific needs.

The MacBook Pro 16 is not slow, but it cannot keep up with the M1. Its single-core score of 1193 in Geekbench 5 is way behind the M1 MacBook Pros 1707, and thats on the Intel Core i9 model of the MacBook Pro 16, which costs a cool $2,799. Things were closer in the multicore test, but the M1 Pro still came out on top and costs less than half the price.

Like the MacBook Pro 13, the 16-inch model has an excellent, color-accurate Retina display and superb speakers. Combined with the large screen, that makes it a great content-consumption machine. In fact, those extra few inches on the display are perfect if you need more screen space, but it is one of the few reasons you would pick the larger MacBook Pro over either M1 MacBook.

You will pay $2,399 for the entry-level MacBook Pro 16, and this comes with 512GB of storage and 16GB of memory. You can go all the way up to 8TB of SSD storage and 64GB of memory, although this will cost you $5,599. If you need a serious amount of storage and RAM, that might be tempting , but we would still advise against buying it.

What The New Macbook Pro Can Do

Apple touts its new notebooks as delivering the power of high-powered PC desktops in a portable.

I liked the 14-inch MacBook Pro’s sturdy feel, with more defined edges than the rounded ones on previous models. Weighing in at 3.5 pounds, the laptop had just enough heft. The 16-inch model weighs 4.7 pounds.

To show off the MacBook Pros’ prowess, the company loaded a collection of high-end programs on the notebook it provided.

Images within Affinity Photo editing software looked vivid and almost 3D. Pictures could be input and adjusted speedily. In Cinema 4D animation software, lighting and shading on a 3D model could be adjusted with changes appearing immediately.

Four separate 8K video windows flowed smoothly in Final Cut Pro and moved fluidly in the editing window when the cursor was moved along the editing line. Apple demoed seven 8K video streams in a briefing to reviewers. In that same briefing, Apple showed how game developers could simultaneously test their new creations on eight different simulators of platforms such as iPhone 13, iPhone 11 and iPod touch using the Xcode app programming suite.

You could scroll effortlessly through more than 1,500 separate instrumental tracks within an orchestral performance in the digital audio program Logic Pro. A lo-fi option showed how a musician could record their songs using just the MacBook Pro’s built-in three-microphone array.

    The Biggest Macbook: Macbook Pro

New features with Appleâs laptops, but slower speeds?

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is much more computer than you need to browse the internet, edit documents, or do casual photo and video editing. But if you want a bigger screen for editing large spreadsheets and databases on the go, or if you want more Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, the Pro might be worth the extra money. And although it still uses Intel processors rather than newer Apple chips, it still offers all the performance necessary for editing photos and videos professionally, running 3D drafting programs, or compiling app code for Apples app stores. Its also the best MacBook if you want to use more than one external displayit supports as many as four, where both the M1 Macs we recommend can use only one. Its speakers are also surprisingly good for a laptop. But it costs more than twice as much as the MacBook Air, its 1.6 pounds heavier, its battery life is relatively mediocre, and it runs a little hotthough that last part has been true of most 15-inch MacBook Pros in years past.

What Should You Look For When Buying A New Laptop

There are certain things you can look out for when buying a new laptop in 2021 that can ensure you get the best laptop for your money.

Make sure you take a look at the specifications of a laptop before buying. This is a good way of quickly seeing how powerful a laptop is, and what it is capable of as long as you know what youre looking for.

First of all is the processor. This is essentially the brain of the laptop, and a laptop will usually have a processor made by either Intel or AMD. Intel is by far the most popular CPU maker for laptops, though were seeing an increasing number of AMD-powered laptops as well.

As a general rule of thumb, Intel processors offer better performance, but AMD processors are better value.

To make things more simple, both Intel and AMD have numbered their processors to give you a rough idea of what sort of tasks a laptop with that processor can perform.

If youre after a budget laptop for simple tasks like browsing the web or watching Netflix, then a laptop with an Intel Pentium, Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3, processor will do that job without making the laptop too expensive.

If youre after something with a bit more oomph perhaps to do more complex task like editing your home videos or playing games then go for a laptop with an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor as a minimum.

A newer processor performs better and is more power efficient so battery life will last longer. They are more expensive, though.

    Which Macbook Should I Buy

My TL DR advice is as follows.

    • If you need a MacBook for everyday work, schoolwork, web surfing, movies and light creativity, go with the MacBook Air. For most people, this is all the MacBook they’ll need.
    • Need some more processing muscle or, for some reason, you really love the Touch Bar? Go with the 13-inch MacBook Pro, but keep in mind it may be a while before it can take full advantage of your software.
    • The 16-inch MacBook Pro is basically a desktop replacement. If you’re thinking of getting an iMac but want to carry it around sometimes, or if you definitely need a discrete GPU, then splurge on the 16-inch MacBook Pro. It’s painfully expensive, but it’s a real joy to use, and frankly, it’s tough to go back to a 13-inch screen after using the 16-inch for a while.

    How We Test Macbook Laptops

We put MacBooks through extensive benchmark testing both synthetic and real-world before they end up in the hands of our reviewers. We evaluate everything from speed and battery life to display brightness, speaker volume and system heat.

We use a Klein K10 colorimeter to detect the brightness and sRGB color gamut of a laptop’s display. For performance benchmarking, we run the laptop through a gauntlet of benchmarks, including Geekbench 4.3 and 5.0 and 3DMark professional graphics tests.

To determine real-world performance, we task the laptop to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution and to duplicate a 4.97GB multimedia file. Our real-world graphics test is the Dirt 3 benchmark with medium settings and 1080p resolution.

We also run heat tests by playing a 15-minute full-screen video and our battery test consists of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. We consider everything over the category average to be a good result. Of course, these tests are complemented with hands-on testing from our reviewers.

Expect A Lot Of Discussion About Chip Speeds And Silicon Technology

Apple usually tries to position its Mac marketing away from “speeds and feeds.”

In Apple’s world, its computers are something you use to create stuff. Focusing on the macOS experience, and the actual clock speed of the processor, or the type or amount of RAM, or other enthusiast-oriented specifications are secondary.

But if Apple plans to make the case that its most expensive MacBook Pro laptops are powerful enough to run professional-level apps with its own chips and the marketing tagline “unleashed” suggests it will Apple will need to discuss clock speeds and how it compares to other laptops which use Intel, AMD or Qualcomm chips.

Last year, at Apple’s November Mac launch where it introduced the Apple M1 chip, it discussed “performance per watt,” making the case that it’s not the absolute speed that matters, but how power-efficient the chips are. Apple talked about “multi-threaded workloads” and “unified memory architecture” and said that its M1 chip has “16 billion transistors.”

Last year, Apple also talked about its chip’s “process technology,” which is the manufacturing node that its chips are made with Apple uses TSMC’s 5-nanometer technology, which is currently the most advanced in the world.

Chip industry watchers will watch closely to see if Apple claims a performance crown and which stats it uses to make the comparison whether it compares its new chips to previous Apple chips, or if it compares them to the competition.

When Is Apple Releasing A New Macbook Pro And Should You Buy Now Or Wait

Rumors have long suggested that Apple is working on a new MacBook Pro refresh with Apple Silicon on the inside, a new design, and much more. As rumors gain steam about a release within the coming weeks, many would-be MacBook Pro buyers are debating whether to buy now or wait. Heres what we recommend.

    What Is The Best Macbook

From underpowered to one of the fastest ultrathin laptops around, the new MacBook Air with M1 is the best Mac for most people. It takes a familiar design and turbocharges it with record-setting performance and all-day battery life. Along with those speed and endurance boosts, the new M1 chip brings iOS and iPadOS apps to Mac for the first time ever. With M1, there is little reason to skip out on the MacBook Air.

That said, if you need better-sustained performance, you might want to opt for the MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Where the MacBook Air is fanless, the MacBook Pro has a traditional cooling system so you can run demanding programs for hours without worrying about overheating. Most people will be fine with the Air, but power users should consider stepping up to the Pro. Like the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro has an incredibly fast SSD and runs on Apple’s gorgeous new Big Sur OS.

What about the Intel-powered MacBooks that weren’t updated to M1 yet? Well, they aren’t completely irrelevant. So far, Apple only refreshed the MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt 3 ports. If you need an additional pair of inputs, the company still sells the top-tier model with four Thunderbolt 3 connections. Again, it runs on aging Intel chips that don’t get the same performance or endurance as the M1 CPU.
